CHESNEE, SC - With the athletic schedules of teams around the state being shifted because of the approach of Hurricane Ian, the Chesnee volleyball team kept everything pretty normal as they extended their winning streak to three straight matches with a 3-1 road victory over Landrum on Thursday afternoon.
After falling to the Cardinals earlier this season at home, the Eagles looked to return the favor on Thursday. The first set was a constant back and forth affair as both teams were tied at 25-25 before Chesnee scored the final two points of the set to take a 27-25 victory in the set and a 1-0 lead in the match. Landrum battled back to even the match at 1-1 after winning the second set over the Eagles 25-18. The third set had a similar feel to the first set as Chesnee held a 24-23 lead and were able to take a 2-1 match lead with a 25-23 victory in the set. While the fourth set was close the Eagles were able to win the match 3-1 after winning the set 25-22 and during that set, they got two big ace serves from Emma Barrington. "The girls played unbelievable tonight," said Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley. "There were times where we could have given back the set, but the girls never did. They really showed great heart and determination tonight." Chesnee got an even more impressive night than usual from Pearl Holloway as she recorded a triple-double with 11 kills, 24 assists, and 22 digs along with 1.5 blocks and two ace serves. Haley Edmonds and Harley Grady gave the Eagles a very strong night on the defensive side of the net as Edmonds had 21 digs with three ace serves and Grady added 11 digs of her own. On the offensive side of the net the Eagles had four different players combine for 24 kills as Olivia Richey (8), Carlee Turner (6), Maggie Blanton (5), and Hayden Roberts (5) worked to control the net. Jayla Dunn also added two solo blocks and two block assists on Thursday. Chesnee now improves to 5-2 in region play and will next travel to Greer Middle College on Tuesday for another region matchup. CHESNEE GIRLS GOLF The Chesnee girls golf team went to Leesville, SC on Thursday to compete in the Ponderosa Golf Tournament and returned to Chesnee with the championship. Chesnee won the tournament with a team score of 347, as they were the best out of twelve teams in the tournament finishing five shots ahead of second place Aynor (353) and ten shots ahead of third place Daniel (357). Fellow local school Landrum finished in fifth place with a score of 418. The Eagles were led by All-Tournament selection Olivia Roberts who shot a score of 81 on Tuesday, as the top three Chesnee golfers shot a score of 88 or below. Chesnee will next take to the course of October 4th in the Smith Memorial at the Country Club of Newberry. LANDRUM, SC - Chesnee and Landrum opened up region play on Thursday night in a matchup moved up for the incoming weather from Hurricane Ian, and it was the Cardinals that came away with the 28-0 victory in Region I-AA competition.
The Cardinals scored twice in the first half, with one score coming in each quarter of the half and capped off the scoring with two touchdowns in the fourth to prevent a Chesnee comeback. Landrum opened the scoring on an 82-yard run on the second play from scrimmage as Colton Link ran it in for the Cardinals. With just under five minutes to go in the first half the Cardinals once again reach pay dirt as AJ Lindsey would run it in from four yards out to double the lead. Link would ice the game with a fourth quarter touchdown run from fifty- six yards out, and Braden Mashtare would add a thirty yard touchdown run. Link finished with two hundred and twenty-one rushing yards with two scores. Mashtare would a hundred and one yards on the ground with a score. Austin Bigford led the Eagles with five and a half tackles. Wesley Wilkie, Ezequiel Lazarin, and Noah Lawter each had four tackles. Chesnee will be back at home next week when they host Abbeville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm. BLACKSBURG, SC - The Chesnee volleyball team ended the first half of region play with a victory and started the second half of region play by defeating Blacksburg in an impressive 3-0 match victory.
"We served the ball really well tonight," said Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley. "We used our aggressive serves to run our offense more effectively tonight." Chesnee got off to a hot start limiting Blacksburg to only twelve points in the first set coming away with a 25-12 victory in the first set. The Wildcats battled back some in the second set, but the Eagles were still too much coming away with a 25-16 victory. The final set was where the Eagles showed their strength, not allowing the Wildcats into double digit points capturing a 25-9 third set victory for a 3-0 victory in the match. On a night the Eagles were strong from the service line Haley Edmonds led the team with nine ace serves along with 18 assists. Olivia Richey led the Eagles in kills with 12 kills against the Wildcats while Carlee Turner also had a strong night with six kills of her own. Pearl Holloway continued her strong play this season for the Eagles as she led the team with in both assists and digs with 27 assists and 11 digs while also adding nine kills and three ace serves. Mitchell Wofford finished just behind Holloway in digs with ten digs of her own. The Eagles now sit at 4-2 in region play and are scheduled to host Landrum in another region matchup on Thursday night. GREENVILLE, SC - The Chesnee volleyball team got down early but fought back in the match to pick up a 3-2 victory over Greenville Tech Charter to end the first half of region play on a winning note.
Chesnee trailed 24-23 in both the first and second sets before eventually falling 25-23 in both sets to trail 2-0 in the match as the Eagles had to win three straight sets to win the match, and that's exactly what they did. "We struggled the first two sets to close out the sets but fought back to win the match," said Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley. "I am so proud of the way the players stayed confident and pushed through." In third set the Eagles were able to cut their deficit in half by defeating the Warriors 25-13 before returning the favor from the first two sets in the fourth set as the Warriors trailed the Eagles 24-23 and it was Chesnee that was able to come away with the 25-23 set victory to even up the match. With the match tied at 2-2, Chesnee left no doubt in the deciding fifth set as they took control and didn't look back winning the set 15-5 to capture the comeback victory in the match. "Our blocking was huge," said Jolley. "Our servers did a great jo the third through fifth sets getting the other team out of their system." Chesnee got another impressive match from Pearl Holloway as she led the team in kills with 15, in assists with 19, and six ace serves while also adding eight digs. Haley Edmonds led the Eagles in digs with an impressive 28 digs while Maggie Blanton led the team in blocks with three and a half. Hayden Roberts and Carlee Turner each had five kills each on Thursday night while Olivia Richey was just behind them with four kills of her own. With the win the Eagles finish the first half of their region play with a 3-2 record and will start the second half of their region schedule on Tuesday when they travel to Blacksburg. SENECA, SC - The Chesnee girls golf team competed in the The Jack Invitational golf tournament on Tuesday where they came away with a fourth-place finish at the Cross Creek Plantation golf course in Seneca.
Chesnee finished with a team score of 357 to finish in fourth place, just behind tournament champion Dorman (323), second place Pickens (330), and Seneca (336). They finished ahead of fellow region school Boiling Springs who finished in fifth place. Boiling Springs' Madison Dixon won the individual tournament with a tournament low score of 74 but she was joined on the All-Tournament team by Olivia Roberts who led the Eagles with a score of 78. The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they compete against Byrnes at River Falls Plantation before competing at the High School Invitational in Florence, SC. EAGLES VOLLEYBALL The Chesnee volleyball team fell to Liberty 3-0 in a road region matchup on Tuesday night. The Eagles fell in set one and set two 25-17 before falling in set three 25-16 but in all three sets the Eagles were close before the Red Devils pulled away at the end of each set. "We battled with Liberty but they pulled away at the end of each set," said Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley. "We just need to work on being consistent in our energy and play." Pearl Holloway led the way for Chesnee with eight kills, 19 assists, and 13 digs while Carlee Turner added seven kills and Olivia Richey added six kills of her own. Haley Edmonds led the Eagles in digs with 32 while Harley Grady added 15 digs of her own. The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Greenville Tech Charter for another region matchup. CHESNEE, SC - The Woodruff Wolverines downed the Chesnee Eagles 49-24 in the Eagles final game before they start region play in two weeks.
Chesnee opened the game on a twelve-play drive that ended with an Ezequiel Lazarin forty-seven yard field goal to put the Eagles up three near the midpoint of the first quarter. Woodruff struck quickly as Carson Tucker found Kory Scott for a seventy-eight scoring strike on the third play of the ensuing drive to give Woodruff the lead at 7-3. The Eagles responded with another long drive, this one ended with a Damarius McDowell four yard run to make it 10-7 in favor of the Eagles. Woodruff then responded with twenty-eight unanswered points as fourteen of those points came in the second quarter when Carson Tucker found Anthony Graybill from thirty-four yards out to put the Wolverines back in front, and Eastin Burch scored from three yards out to give Woodruff a 28-10 halftime lead. Burch started the second half for the Wolverines with a one-yard scoring run as Tucker found Graybill to complete the run, this time from forty-five yards out. Chesnee got back on the board with the first play of the fourth quarter as KJ Proctor punched it in from a yard out to make it 35-16. Woodruff iced the game with back-to-back touchdowns as Cameron Nabors scored on a sixteen-yard run and Bryant Whiteside followed with a fifty-six yard run to cap the scoring for the Wolverines. Chesnee got a final minute three-yard scoring run from Damarius McDowell for his second score of the night. Carson Tucker was the star of the night for Woodruff as the senior finished with twenty-one completions for 300 yards and three scores. Eastin Burch finished with 88 yards rushing and two scores while Anthony Graybill had seven catches for 105 yards and a pair of scores. Kory Scott had two catches for 99 yards and a score while DJ Nash caught nine balls for 81 yards. Noah Lawter and Damarius McDowell led the Eagles as Lawter finished with 101 yards and McDowell had 81 yards and two scores. Dylan Jolley led the Eagles defensively with nine tackles as Kaylob Blanton had a big night in the kickoff return game for the Eagles as he had 115 return yards. The Eagles will be back in action in two weeks as they travel to Landrum to open up region play with a 7:30 PM scheduled kick. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee volleyball team got down early but made an impressive comeback to improve to 2-1 in region play after defeating Greer Middle College in a home region match on Thursday night.
The Eagles went down 0-2 in the match after falling in set one 25-27, in a set that could have gone either way as the two teams were tied at 25-25 before the Blazers picked up the last two points in the set, and in set two fell 20-25. With the match seeming to be going against them, the Chesnee volleyball pulled off an impressive feat as they won three straight sets to capture the match 3-2 on Thursday night. In the third set the Eagles battled back to win 25-22 and in the fourth set was able to tie the match with a strong 25-18 victory. With both teams tied they went to a fifth set where the Eagles, with momentum on their side, had their most dominant victory of the match winning the fifth set 15-6 over the Blazers. "We were down two sets and could have easily folded because we had a rough start," said Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley. "The girls didn't give up though as they fought back in the third set and kept fighting until the end. They showed a lot of grit tonight." Pearl Holloway had an impressive night for the Eagles as she recorded a triple double with 20 kills, 19 assists, and 29 digs on Thursday night. Haley Edmonds also had a strong night as she recorded a double-double of her own with 10 assists and 29 digs while Harley Grady had a great defensive night for the Eagles with 16 digs. Carlee Turner finished second in kills for the team with eight kills while Hayden Roberts added 12 digs and Emma Showen added 10 digs of her own. Chesnee will be back in action next week with two road region games as they travel to Liberty on Tuesday and go to Greenville Tech Charter on Thursday. GREENWOOD, SC - The Chesnee golf team played their second tournament in two days on Tuesday and came away with a top four finish at the Lady Eagle Invitational at the Links of Stoney Point in Greenwood.
Chesnee finished in fourth place with a team score of 336, which was just six shots behind Chapin who won the tournament with a score of 330. Chesnee head coach Kyle Scruggs said that while he's not upset with a top five result, he knows that his team left shots on the course. "I'm not upset with the finish at all as we got some good outings from Abigail Watson and Addy Parker especially," said Scruggs. "We're struggling as a team with some chipping and putting along with our course management. Today we left some shots on the course because of that but those are areas we can clean up as a team." Outside of Chapin finishing in first place, the only other teams to finish ahead of the Eagles were Pickens (332) in second place and TL Hanna (333) in third place. Addy Parker led the Chesnee team with a score of 79 for a tie of eighth place in the individual standings. Olivia Pellerin from Mauldin won the individual tournament with a score of 72 while Lillian Alexander from Byrnes finished in a tie for second with a score of 74. Fellow district two golfer Madison Dixon from Boiling Springs finished in a tie for sixth place with a score of 77. The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they host Landrum in match play at Meadowbrook. CHESNEE VOLLEYBALL Chesnee volleyball went on the road to Landrum in region play on Tuesday and fell 3-1 to the homestanding Cardinals. Landrum jumped out to a first set victory with a score of 25-18 before the Eagles were able to battle back and tie the match at 1-1 by winning the second set 25-18 themselves. The third set went to the Cardinals with a score of 25-17 and while the Eagles battled hard in the fourth set, they ended up falling to Landrum 25-20 to give the Cardinals a 3-1 victory in the match. Pearl Holloway led the way for Chesnee with nine kills, 20 assists, and five ace serves. Carlee Turner tied Holloway for most kills in the match as she also registered nine kills on Tuesday night. Jayla Dunn led the Eagles in blocks with four blocks while Haley Edmonds led the team in digs with 12 while Hayden Roberts followed close behind with nine digs of her own. Chesnee will be back in action on Thursday when they host Greer Middle College in region play. RUTHERFORDTON, NC - The Chesnee football team went just across the state line for a game at R-S Central but fell to the Hilltoppers 27-20 on Friday night.
The Eagles drove the ball down to the thirteen-yard line of the Hilltoppers on the first drive of the second quarter before settling for the first of two Ezekiel Lazarin field goals, this one from thirty yards out to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter. R-S Central responded just over three minutes later when Marcus McKiney took the ball around the right side of the Hilltopper offense into the end zone for a 7-3 lead. They added a second touchdown in the quarter when Malachi Coston rumbled in from two yards out to give the Hilltoppers a 13-3 halftime lead. In a game that saw sixteen points scored in the first thirty-four minutes of the game, it was only fitting to then see thirty-four points scored in the final fourteen minutes of the game. Noah Lawter got the fireworks started when he pulled the Eagles to within three points when he ran it in from fifteen yards out with just under ninety seconds to go in the third quarter. The Hilltoppers extended their lead just three minutes into the fourth quarter when Kihea Owens ran it in from eighteen yards out to make the score 20-10 in favor of the Hilltoppers. Lawter once again came through for the Eagles when he ran it in from forty-two yards out at the midway point of the quarter to make the score 20-17 in favor of the Hilltoppers. R-S Central once again responded with a touchdown as Kihea Owens picked up his second rushing score of the game when he rumbled in from thirty-six yards out to give the Hilltoppers a ten-point lead once again with just over four minutes to go. Chesnee drove down and was able to get three more points off the foot of Ezekiel Lazarin, this time it was a thirty-two-yard field goal to cut it to 27-20 with just under two minutes to go in the game. The Eagles initially recovered the ensuing onside kick, but a penalty caused the Eagles to have to re-kick and the bounce didn't favor the Eagles the second time around. Noah Lawter led the way for the Eagles with 110 total yards with 105 yards coming on the ground along with two touchdowns. KJ Proctor also broke a hundred yards running for 60 and throwing for 45 more yards. Kaleb Mason and Ezequiel Lazarin each had a nice catch on Friday night as Mason caught one for twenty-five yards and Lazarin had big catches on third down as well as one for a fourteen-yard gain on a fourth down. Austin Bigford and Wesley Wilkie tied for the team lead with five tackles each, as this was Wilkie's first varsity action since being called up from JV. Trey Shearer finished with 83 yards rushing and Kihea Owens finished with 71 yards rushing with a pair of scores. The Eagles will be back in action next Friday at the 'Eagle's Nest' when they host their rivals from the other end of Highway 221, the Woodruff Wolverines as kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM. CHESNEE, SC - One day removed from picking up a victory over the state line, the Chesnee volleyball team returned home on Thursday to open region play and came away with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Blacksburg Wildcats.
"It felt great to get our first region win tonight," said Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley. "We moved really well tonight and served aggressively." The Eagles came out of the gate on fire to start the match as they took an impressive 25-6 win in the first set and took an early 1-0 lead in the match. While Blacksburg was able to make the next two sets a little closer, it wasn't close enough as the Eagles won the second set 25-14 and the third set 25-13 to win the match three sets to none. Pearl Holloway led the way for the Eagles as she recorded seven kills, 26 assists, and seven ace serves as she helped her big night in the assist column also meant a big night for her hitters. One of those hitters that had a big night was Carlee Turner who led the Eagles with 13 kills on Thursday night. Olivia Richey added seven kills of her own while Maggie Blanton, who also had two blocks, and Hayden Roberts each added two kills each while Roberts also added six digs and two ace serves. "Pearl did a great job distributing the ball to a variety of hitters again," said Jolley. "The hitters done a great job of hitting and coming away with points." While the hitters had a great game, the Eagles also got a strong game from their backline as Haley Edmonds led the team with 18 digs and fellow backline player Harley Grady had a big night from the service line with five ace serves. Chesnee will be back in action on Tuesday night as they travel to Landrum for another region matchup. |
