On Saturday April 14th, the Chesnee Baseball program will be hosting a 100-inning marathon game as a part of their fundraising efforts to provide Chesnee Student Athletes with the best facilities possible.
Chesnee High School has some of the nicest indoor facilities in the county, and now with the help of the Chesnee community they want to upgrade the outdoor facilities to make them some of the nicest in the area. Chesnee Athletic Director James Hyatt is in his first year as athletic director. Hyatt comes to Chesnee after a legendary career in North Carolina where he is a member of the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. Coach Hyatt's teams in North Carolina had some of the best facilities in North Carolina due to hard work and community involvement, "in the last 10-12 years I coached it wasn't uncommon for us to raise $20-30,000 or more for our baseball program. We had everything for 6,000 square foot covered cages, inground dugouts, a baseball storage building, and equipment to help maintain the field." Hyatt said "We raised the money ourselves so we didn't have to rely on the athletic department and take money away from another program, and that gave us the resources to do those things." Chesnee has a goal of $10,000, and the money is going to go towards completing the new outfield wall, purchasing a turtle for home plate, and upgrading equipment. Chesnee also wants to eventually build new dugouts that are sunk into the ground. Chesnee High School is one of the centerpieces of the Chesnee community, and the Chesnee Athletic Department needs the communities help to improve the athletic grounds. "Chesnee High School is the centerpiece of our community, it ought to be the bright shining light on the hill. If we don't get money from the state or the district, we can come together and everybody give small bits of money and time and we can make our facilities as nice as anybodies" Coach Hyatt said "anytime you raise your own money and have your blood sweat and tears into it makes it that much more of a special place people to come and show off improvements. " If you would like to donate to this fundraiser contact Athletic Director James Hyatt or any member of the baseball program. Donations can be made directly to the Baseball program or can be made to the Athletic Department. Chesnee scored two runs in the seventh inning, and got a solid game on the mound from Clemson signee Nate Lamb to down the Blacksburg Wildcats 2-1 at Dean Jones Stadium.
Blacksburg's Kirby Connell and Chesnee's Nate Lamb both had great nights on the mound to give each team a chance to win. Connell, the Tennessee commit, helped his own cause in the 4th with a solo shot to left field. The home run was Connell's 5th of the season. Connell scattered 7 hits and struck out 11 over 6 2/3 innings. Nate Lamb kept the Eagles in with his own great performance on the mound. Lamb gave up just two hits, and none in the final 3 innings. Lamb also struck out 9 wildcat batters with the lone blemish being the Connell home run. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease expected a big performance from his Senior Ace, "he is our guy, and we knew he would give us a shot. He made one bad pitch and their guy made him pay for it, but he got right back in it and kept battling and held them at one to give us a chance late" Connell held the Eagles off the scoreboard until the 7th inning. After Connell retired the leadoff man, Dawson Williamson hit a double to right center. Nate Lamb was intentionally walked to give the Eagles runners on 1st and 2nd. A wild pitch on the 3rd strike to Kip Bagwell allowed both runners to move up 90 feet. Nolan Hammett was intentionally walked to load the bases. A wild pitch with Jonathan Bishop at the plate allowed Dawson Williamson to score the tying run. Later in the at bat the Blacksburg Catcher had an errant throw on an attempted pickoff at 3rd that allowed Nate Lamb to score the winning run. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease was pleased with his team's ability to keep battling and finally plate a couple of runs against Connell, "Connell is a very good pitcher, we had opportunities, and we didn't score early. We just kept putting a little pressure and a little pressure then made a flare for the dramatic at the end which drives a coach crazy. Hats off to their guy(Connell) he did a great job tonight" The teams will face each other again tomorrow night as Chesnee travels to Blacksburg, first pitch is scheduled for 7pm. The Lady Eagles used a 8 run 1st inning to down the St Josephs Lady Knights 12-1 on the road to improve to 2-1 in region play. The Lady Eagles tacked on another run in the 2nd on a Shelby Harris RBI triple. Sam Carver added an RBI single in the 5th. The Lady Eagles capped their scoring with an Olivia Gardner 2 RBI single in the sixth. The Lady Eagles are in a strong position to push for a home playoff game or possibly a Region Championship. When asked what it would mean for her team to get a home playoff game or region title Coach Height said "it would be a testament to how hard our girls work. We are young, but these girls are tough as nails and they fight to the end. Being able to play at home with mostly 8th and 9th graders and only one senior is a big deal for us." The Lady Eagles will be back in action April 5thagainst Blacksburg. The Chesnee Lady Eagles fell to region rival Landrum on Monday night 2-0. This turned out to be an historic night as the Lady Eagles ended the 76-game hitting streak of Landrum Catcher Sarah Price.
Chesnee Head Coach Ashley Height was pleased with how her team handled Price at the plate, "Sarah is an incredible athlete. I hate to see her streak end, but I'm glad we were the ones to do it. That was a big feat for us and a big feat for Sam. Sam did an incredible job against her knowing what she was going up against." Landrum got on the board early with a 1st inning solo home run for Alexus Atkins. The Cardinals would tack on another in the 3rd as Ellen Boatwright drove in McKenzie Suddeth. Chesnee Pitcher Sam Carver had a solid night on the mound for the Lady Eagles as she scattered 5 hits and only allowed two runs, while striking out 4. Chesnee Head Coach was pleased with her young freshman's performance, "with us being young I couldn't be more proud of our pitching, Sam and Paige (Scruggs), they have done an incredible job this year being able to keep us in games." Chesnee Head Coach Ashley Height was pleased with how her young team played against an experienced Landrum team, "Landrum is a really good team with those 6 seniors they have along with the rest of the girls. They are a top team and have been for a while. I had 8 that were freshmen and 8th graders out there competing against a Landrum powerhouse. It's wonderful for me looking forward at these girls and what they can do." Height said Chesnee will be back in action tomorrow eveningat St. Josephs at 5:30. Chesnee used some early offense, and a great performance on the mound from Clemson signee Nate Lamb to defeat Landrum 3-0 on the road Thursday night.

After the 2nd inning neither team would plate a run as the game turned into a pitcher's duel. Christian Melick had 7 strikeouts for the Cardinals over 5 innings and John Siary struck out 3 over the final two innings to give Landrum 10 strikeouts as a team. Chesnee's Nate Lamb carried a no-hit bid into 6th inning, then Turner Sloan hit a sharp single back up the middle for the only hit of the night for the Cardinals. Lamb would recover to strikeout the next batter, but due to a dropped 3rd strike the batter advanced to 1st and Lamb responded by striking out the next 3 batters to give him a total of 4 in the inning. That would be the only hit Lamb would allow and he only issued one walk over 7 innings pitched. Lamb struck out 14 Landrum batters, including 6 of the final 7 Landrum batters. Lamb had all of his pitches working for him tonight, including a knee buckling curveball. With this win, Chesnee improves to 3-0 in region play and maintains the top spot in the region standings. Chesnee will return to the diamond tomorrow nightas they finish the season series with Landrum at Dean Jones Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 pm. On Tuesday Evening, The Lady Eagles used a brilliant performance on the mound from Paige Scruggs, and two big innings at the plate to rout the Blacksburg Lady Wildcats 11-0 in 6 innings to win the region opener for the Lady Eagles.

Chesnee Head Coach Ashley Height was pleased with her young freshman pitcher and her ability to come back strong after allowing two base runners in the 1st, "Paige, she stays after it all the time and I love that about her. She is one that is going to keep no matter what happens and is not going to let it get to her." The Lady Eagles got on the board when Sam Carver scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 4th. She would be the 1st in a string of 5 consecutive Chesnee batters to score and the Lady Eagles scored 7 runs in the inning. Ali Scruggs had a big 2 RBI single to to extend the Chesnee lead to 5-0. This is a team that never gives up no matter what is going. I was proud of them especially to end the game with a walkoff." The Lady Eagles will be back in tomorrow night at R.S. Central (N.C.).
