The Duncan Park Bracket ended in a three way tie as Greenville, Mauldin, and Spartanburg all ended with a 2-1 record. Chesnee will be back in action on March 7th as they host Travelers Rest with a 6:00 PM scheduled first pitch. ANDERSON, SC - Chesnee left the Anderson Sports and Entertainment Center celebrating after a banner day on Saturday.
The Eagles left with two individual state champions along with six All-State wrestlers. Senior Garrett Williams won the 182lbs class and will represent Chesnee in the North/South All-Star Tournament next week. Thaddeus Gerstenacker became the first freshman to win a state championship for the Eagles as he won the 138lbs class. Nick Hofer lost a hard fought 6-3 battle in the 195lbs class championship to earn 2nd place. Aedan Mendoza in the 145lbs class and Wyatt Hawk in the 126lbs class also earned 2nd place finishes. Tyler Henderson rounded out the All-State bunch as he brought home a hard earned third place finish in the consolation bracket of the 113lbs class. Quinton Gerstenacker in the 132lbs class and Gunther Gerstenacker in the 160lbs class each brought home fifth place finishes while Aiden Allen rounded out the state finalists with a seventh-place finish in the heavyweight division. While Chesnee will be losing some quality seniors to graduation this year, they have a strong group returning next year including state champion Thaddeus Gerstenacker which should set the Eagles up for another strong season next year. SPARTANBURG, SC - In the opening game of the Steve Sanders Memorial Tournament at Duncan Park, the Greenville Red Raiders downed the Chesnee Eagles 6-5 in five innings.
Carson Williamson hit a leadoff triple for the Eagles in their first at-bats of the game before later scoring on a Tucker Johnson RBI single giving Chesnee an early 1-0 lead. Greenville responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning as Cameron Barnhardt tied the game with a RBI double. Noah Wallace gave the Red Raiders the lead on a RBI single that drove in Barnhardt before Wallace later scored on a RBI single by Rush Sheppard. The Red Raiders tacked on another run in the bottom of the second inning thanks to the legs of Benjamin Wilson as he hit a single and later stole second and third bases. He later scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Brayden Renfrow to make it 4-1 in favor of Greenville. Chesnee bounced back in the top of the fourth inning by sending all nine batters to the plate. Dawson Pruitt scored the first run on a wild pitch before Carson Gossett and Carson Williamson each drove in a run with two-out RBI singles. Kohen Orr delivered the big blow with a two-out RBI double to give Chesnee their first lead since the first inning at 5-4 over the Red Raiders. Greenville will open day two at Duncan Park at 9:00 AM when they face Spartanburg to open up the second day of play in the tournament. UNION, SC- The Chesnee softball needed an extra frame to down Union County 4-3 to open their season on Friday night.
Maddie Handy hit a game winning homerun in the eighth to earn herself a win in the circle as she also pitched a complete game for the Eagles. Union County got off to a quick start as Caroline Davis blasted a two run homer in the bottom of the first inning to give the Yellow Jackets an early 2-0 lead. Mikayla Cannon had a big night for the Eagles as she hit a RBI double in the fifth inning, and drove in a run on a fielder's choice to tie the game in the seventh. Bixley Koon and Handy each had two hits for the Eagles. Mackensie Ford and Caroline Davis each had a multiple hit game for the Yellow Jackets. Handy picked up the win in the circle as she pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts while Abby Benfield threw a complete game with five strikeouts for the Yellow Jackets. The game was originally scheduled as a home game but has been changed to be played at Clover. Chesnee BaseballFor the Chesnee baseball team, the Eagles had some unusual struggles last season but this year they're looking to rebound and get back to the top of the region where they're used to being. Last season the Eagles finished in fourth place of the region, which is strange for a team used to being one of the top two teams each year. They're not planning on repeating last season and look to compete for a region championship again this season. "We look to bounce back from a sub-par 2022 spring season where we finished out of the top two in the region for the first time in many years," said Chesnee head coach Scott Wease. The Eagles will return seven starters from last year, which include four players in the field and three pitchers from last season's team. They will lean a lot on their pitching this season, especially early, as they have several returners and newcomers they look to rely on heavily this season. The pitching staff will be led by three returning left-handed pitchers in Eli Henderson, Carson Williamson, and Tucker Johnson. They will be joined by newcomers on the mound in right-hander Jordan Fitch and left-hander Kohen Orr. "We will lean heavily on our pitching staff with several returners and a couple of newcomers," said Wease. "Offensively, we have three returners that should lead the way while we have some newcomers that should help as well." On the offensive side, the Eagles will count on Ethan Lawson, Tucker Johnson, and Carson Williamson at the plate while also getting contributions from newcomers Kohen Orr and Dawson Pruitt. The Eagles will compete in the Steve Sander's Tournament at Duncan Park from February 24th-25th before opening their regular season at home on March 7th against Traveler's Rest. Chesnee SoftballIt's easy to say that the success of the Chesnee softball brings high expectations for the team every year and this season is no different as the Eagles return three players that have started at least three years each and seen a lot of success. After winning the region championship last season and just two years ago playing for a state championship, you could say the Eagles are hungry to keep that success going. "We play to compete for another region championship and hopefully will be playing well into May," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "Being able to return six starters is a huge benefit especially having three players that have started at least three years should help us hit the ground running early in the season." Chesnee will be led in the pitching circle by senior All-State player and four-year starter Maddie Handy, who was also named Co-Region Player of the Year last season. She will be joined by fellow All-Region players, junior Skylar Barrett (also a four-year starter) and Emily Pruett (a three-year starter). Those three will make up half of the returning starters from last year as the other three starters returning this year are Aubrey Aparis, Jada Sellars, and Harley Grady. Chesnee will also look to get key contributions from returners in senior infielder Brandolin Bearfield and junior outfielder Katie Faith Watson. They will also be looking for big things from newcomers Bixley Koon, Natalie Morris, Mikayla Cannon, and Rubye Watson. The Eagles will kickoff their regular season on March 1st in a home game against Clover starting at 6:00 PM. Chesnee Boy's GolfThe Chesnee boys golf team enters the 2023 season with some high expectations after a strong finish at the state tournament last year and with the Eagles returning all five starters from last year. The Eagles come into the new season ranked 5th in AA in the preseason coming off a 7th place finish at the AA State Championship last year which provides another boost for the Eagles. As they will be returning all five starters off of last year’s team, the Eagles are poised to make a run at the Region Championship and a strong finish in the AA State Championship. Chesnee will be led by All-Region players junior Peyton Lawter and freshman Creighton Rentz. Those two will be joined by fellow starters, sophomore Jake Hefner, freshman Hughston Johnson, and the lone senior Jackson Ramsey. The Eagles are playing a tough schedule with trips to big tournaments throughout the season. Chesnee will make their debut for 2023 at the Red Raider Invitational hosted by Greenville HS at Greenville CC. March shows a full slate of tournaments for the Eagles; including the Rebel Invitational, Battle at the Dam hosted by River Bluff, Magnolia Invitational at Sumter, the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Anderson, and the Spartanburg County Championship hosted by Boiling Springs at Woodfin Ridge. In April, Chesnee will travel to the Ponderosa Shootout, which will highlight a field of teams from AAA-AA-A only. On April 25, Chesnee will again host the TC Ezell Invitational at Meadowbrook which honors their former principal. There are 16 teams scheduled to compete that day including defending champion Mauldin, as well as 2022 5A State Champions Boiling Springs. Coach Pitt said, “I feel like we have another strong field for the TC Ezell which will prepare all the teams as they ready themselves for their respective region tournaments”. Each year, the Eagles have been able to donate a portion of the proceeds from the TC Ezell Invitational back to the Tom Ezell Scholarship Fund. Chesnee will host the Region I-AA Tournament at Meadowbrook on May 9 and look to advance to the AA State Championship at Newberry CC on May 15-16. Coach Pitt hopes the Eagles continue to progress as the season moves forward and they are playing their best golf at the right time. “If we can be playing our best at the end of the year," said Pitt. "I’d love to be able to challenge for a top 3-4 spot at the state championship this year." Chesnee Track and FieldAfter a successful season last year that saw the Eagles accomplish a lot of big time goals, the expectations for the Chesnee track and field team is high and they're looking to build on that success. On the boys' side of the team, the Eagles finished last year with a second-place finish at the region meet, a sixth-place finish at upper state, and a 19th place finish at 2A state. With 21 returning starters, the Eagles hope the success from last season will lead to ever greater success this year. "This year we are looking to build on a successful 2022 campaign," said Chesnee head boys track coach Terrance Hamilton. "The young group who started years ago as freshmen have now become the leaders and they have set high expectations for not only themselves but the new athletes as well." The Eagles will be led by All-Region and All-State senior Terrell Kessler and he will be joined by fellow returnees Aiden Allen, Andrew Cash, Clay Davis, Josh Deland, Cade Fisher, Donte Glenn, Noah Gottschalk, Tyrel Hamilton, Malichi Hill, Hudson Jones, Noah Lawter, Marcus Linder, Kaleb Mason, Hayes Nix, Omarion Ocampo-Rios, Jesus Ponce, John Owens-Kong, ET Valentine, Garrett Williams, and Jayden Williams. They will also look to get key contributions from newcomers Austin Bigford, Luke Edmonds, and Hayden Webb. While the Eagles lost a lot of sprinters last season, they believe the young guys are ready to step up while the long-distance runners and field specialist continue to get better. "We lost quite a few sprinters to graduation last year, but we have a lot of talent still remaining and the young runners are ready to step into the roles we need them to," said Hamilton. "The distance team continues to grow after a 2022 season that saw a number of mid distance and long-distance runners compete at the state meet and our goal this year is to improve on that. We also return a strong team of throwers who were able to be competitive all the way to the state level last season." Hamilton says that his team has worked really hard in the offseason and he believes that people will see the evidence of that hard work once the season begins. "This group of young men work hard every day at practice and we feel that the hard work that they put in will be evident once the season starts," said Hamilton. "I think the experience of competing at state last year really lit a fire in a lot of the returning athletes and they are going to push to get back there this year with the expectation of being on the medal stand at the end of the year." On the girls' side of the team the team continues to grow and they're going to look to build off a successful season last year. The Eagles finished in fifth place in the region last year and 15th at the upper state meet. "We're returning a strong group this season," said Chesnee head girls track coach Kimberly Hamilton. "Last year we had a highly competitive distance core who able to compete at the state meet in the 4x800m relay. That group is all returning and are poised for another run at the state championship." While the Eagles distance team will be their strong point, they will look to a lot of underclassmen who are excited to lead the Eagles sprinters group. On the field side they have a great mix of returning athletes with newcomers as they have a lot more athletes competing than in year's past. The Eagles will return 10 starters from last year's team in Lanie Arrowood, Nardi Barnes, Amy-Rae Breitenbach, Essence Durham, Zibi Edmonds, Tanner Jones, Cheyenne Puckett, Olivia Stowell, Cami Tilley, Claire Walker, and Olivia Wampler. They will also look to count on newcomers Hannah Barnes, Abrie Cox, Anslie Middleton, and Cade Newman. Coach Hamilton says that as the team continues to grow, it continues to build a sisterhood mentality that sees them encouraging each other. "Our track team continues to grow in members and it's a very young talented group that over the past two years have become for their hard work and competitiveness," said Hamilton. "They have already created a "sister" mentality and encourage each other at every turn. We expect that this team will continue to surprise our competition and should be able to be at the top on many of our track meets this spring." The Eagles will start their season with an intrasquad meet on February 28th before starting their regular season on March 9th in a meet at Broome High School. CHESNEE, SC - On Tuesday night the Chesnee basketball programs said goodbye to four seniors with two victories over the Greenville Tech Charter basketball teams in front of a large home crowd.
In the boys' game the Chesnee Eagles downed the Greenville Technical Charter Warriors 45-41 on Tuesday night. Before the game, Chesnee said goodbye to seniors Terrell Kessler and Carson Williamson. "Carson has been a part of our program for five years, and he hit some big shots for us tonight," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "It's always good to go out a winner." "Terrell has only been with us for a year," said Pitt. "He is just a ball of energy and has been trying his best to learn as much as he can this year." Williamson will leave Chesnee with his name in the record book as he is tied for most three-pointers in a single game. "It feels amazing to get this win," said Williamson. "Last game of the season, last game of my career, it just feels amazing to help my boys get this win." Kessler will leave Chesnee as a state champion, and school record holder in the 4x100M track event. "This year has been an amazing experience," said Kessler. "If I have one regret it is not joining the team earlier in my high school career." The Warriors jumped out to an early 4-2 lead, but a basket by KJ Proctor tied the game at four points all. Carson Williamson followed with his first three-pointer of the game to give Chesnee a 7-4 lead. Chesnee ended the quarter on a 15-3 run for a 17-7 lead after the first quarter thanks to eight points from forwards KJ Proctor and Elijah Brown. The defensive energy from the Eagles sparked by Terrell Kessler proved to make an impact in the first quarter. "Coach gave me one job to do and that was to play defense," said Kessler. "We came out as a ball of energy to get this win on senior night." Chesnee extended the lead to thirteen points early in the second quarter on a Kaylob Blanton three pointer, but the Warriors ended the half on a 12-4 run to cut the Eagles lead to 24-19. A back and forth third quarter saw Daniel Wease step up big for the Eagles as he scored eight of the Eagles ten points as both teams traded baskets. The Warrior's Joe Medlock hit a basket as time expired in the quarter to pull the Warriors to within a point of the Eagles. Another Eagle stepped up in the fourth quarter, this time senior Carson Williamson, as he started the scoring for the Eagles to open the quarter and scored seven of the Eagles eleven points in the quarter. His biggest shot of the game was a three pointer with just over two minutes left to give Chesnee a three-point lead followed by two clutch free throws to stretch the lead to five. The five-point lead proved too big for the Warriors to overcome. "I have been in this program for five years now," said Williamson. "I knew we needed someone to step up, and I felt like I was in position to do it. Man, what a way to go out." Daniel Wease led the Eagles with 14 points while Carson Williamson added 10 points of his own. Derrick Durham led the Warriors with 13 points while Christopher Durham and Jake Jakeim Sullivan added 11 points each. In the girls' game the Chesnee Eagles downed the Greenville Technical Charter Warriors 44-40 on senior night. "It's nice to win on senior night as everyone always looks at as such a special night," said Eagles senior Emma Showen. "To go out with a win is something we will remember forever." After the game the Eagles honored seniors Emma Showen and Haley Edmonds. "It feels amazing to win on senior night," said Edmonds. "This win was a team effort and we could definitely feel the love from our teammates." The first quarter was a story of two different four-minute stretches for the Eagles. The Warriors started on a 8-0 run as Gracyn Schreel and Sophie Chasteen each hit three-pointers during the run. "We knew we had to put complete trust in each other," said Showen. "We knew we would overcome it." The Eagles broke the seal with just over four minutes to go in the quarter on a Nykerria Proctor layup and ended the quarter on an 8-3 run to pull within three points of the Warriors. Chesnee went on a 7-0 run in the middle of the second quarter to take their first lead of the game as Proctor's seventh point of the first half pushed the Eagles to a 22-19 halftime lead. The Eagles started the third quarter on a mini 5-0 run to stretch the lead to eight, but the Warriors responded with a 7-3 run to cut the lead in half at the end of the third quarter. With just over four minutes to go in the game the Warriors tied the game on a basket by Courtney Brooks. Chesnee's Jayla Gist made sure the Chesnee seniors wouldn't be denied a final home win as she scored six of the Eagles final eight points outscoring the Warriors 8-4 over the final four minutes. "We knew they were going to drive and find the open shooter," said Edmonds. "We used that knowledge to our advantage and cutoff passing lanes and didn't foul." The other Eagle to score in the final four minutes was Carlee Turner who hit what proved to be the game winning basket with forty-seven seconds to go. Bixley Koon led the Eagles with 12 points while Nykerria Proctor added 10 points of her own. Gracyn Schreel led the Warriors with 15 points, and Courtney Brooks added 10 more points. Chesnee, SC- Chesnee remembered all season the bad taste a home playoff loss to Dixie left in their mouths last season and made sure to pull out the win in a dominate 78-6 victory over the Lewisville Lions in the second round of the A/AA playoffs.
The Eagles went into the match with a focused mindset. "I challenged them coming in, because last year we got put out by Dixie," said Chesnee head coach Jon Rentz. "That was not going to happen this year. I have good senior leadership this year, and that has made a difference." Tyler Henderson collected a forfeit win in 113lbs weight class to get things started for the Eagles as he along with Quinton Gerstenacker, Aiden Mendoza, and Gunther Gerstenacker all picked up forfeit wins. Ricky Henderson picked up the first win for the Eagles on the mat with a pin in the 120lbs weight class. "It felt great to get us started," said Henderson. "I did what I had to do to get the win." Wyatt Hawk, Thaddeus Gerstenacker, Jesse Cozby, and Ezekiel Lazarin each followed with pins of their own. Next came freshly named North/South All-Star Garrett Williams in the 182lbs class, who also won with a pin in just fifteen seconds. "It feels good and it's an honor to be selected," said Williams about his North/South selection. "It feels good because I was selected by the coaches." "He is a leader, and the kids respect and listen to him," said Rentz about Williams. "He sets the tone at practice. He is just a good kid who works hard and deserves everything he is getting." Nick Hofer, Aiden Allen, and Chase Gregory each followed Williams with pins for the Eagles. Lewisville's Ethan Shipman collected the lone pin the Lions on Saturday morning. Chesnee will now move to the third round of the playoffs with a match at Ninety-Six on Monday. Ninety-Six defeated Pelion to advance to the third round of the playoffs themselves. Earlier on Saturday morning, the Eagles won their first-round match against Wagner-Salley before even entering the gym as they advanced by team forfeit. Lewisville advanced to the second round against Chesnee on a tiebreaker over High Point Academy for a 43-42 win. The tiebreaker was determined by who at the least number of forfeits. Jay Brown, Xander Dotson, Brendan Ross, and Said Gasimov each collected pins for the High Point Grizzlies. North/South All-Star Luke Crosby picked up a forfeit win for the Grizzlies. Aiden Smith collected the lone pin for the Lewisville Lions. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee Eagles picked up a pair of Region I-2A wins as both basketball teams won thrillers against the Liberty Red Devils at home on Friday night.
In the boys' game the Chesnee Eagles needed an additional four minutes of play to pull out the 65-61 win in overtime over the Liberty Red Devils. "This is a big win for as we hope to end this year on a strong note," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "We didn't have our best game, but we gutted out this win." The Red Devils came out hot as they made the first three baskets of the game, but the Eagles responded with a run of their own. The rest of the quarter was back and forth action until the final two minutes, when the Red Devils went on a 7-0 run. Jack Thompson's layup as time expired in the quarter helped Liberty build a 17-11 lead after the first quarter. Liberty opened the second quarter on another run, this one an 8-2 thanks to six points from Kendrick Jackson. The Eagles fired back with an 11-4 run of their own sparked by a pair of three-pointers from Noah Mvula to cut the Liberty lead to five going into the halftime break. One key stat in the game that helped Eagles pull out the win in the second half was holding Kendrick Jackson to just six points in the second half after he netted fourteen points in the first half and used his driving ability to help get better looks for teammates. "We switched to a zone defense after halftime," said Pitt. "I believe that helped us slowdown Jackson and helped us pull out the win." Chesnee opened the second half on an 8-2 run that saw Daniel Wease give the Eagles their first lead of the game at 32-31. Dawson Pruitt made a three-pointer in the final minute of the quarter to help the Eagles regain the led again at 43-42, but Dre Paul's responding basket gave the Red Devils the lead heading into what was expected to be the final frame. The fourth quarter was another back-and-forth affair that saw Noah Mvula sink another big pair of three pointers, including one with a minute and twenty seconds on the clock to put the Eagles up 57-55 The final sixty-nine seconds of regulation saw the Red Devils go to the line six times, but only be able to convert two of them to tie the game. The Eagles had a chance to take one final shot, but Carson Williamson 's half-court shot rimmed out to force overtime. Liberty's Seth Terry scored the first basket in overtime for either team, but the Eagles locked down defensively and didn't allow another made basket from the field in the overtime period. "We call getting three straight stops on defense a kill, and I told our team if we can get a kill in overtime we would win, and we did just that," said Pitt. Carson Williamson sank a three pointer for the Eagle's first basket of overtime, and it gave them the lead as they never trailed again from that point forward. Braylon Blanton hit a shot to put the Eagles up 63-61 near the midway point of the overtime period, before Daniel Wease sank a pair of free throws to clinch it with just under four seconds to play. "When I went to the line I just wanted to knock them down and pick up the win to help send our seniors out with some wins," said Wease. Noah Mvula led the Eagles with 19 points while KJ Proctor added 10 points of his own. Kendrick Jackson led all scorers with 20 points as Dre Paul also added nine points for the Red Devils. The Eagles will be back at home on Tuesday when they host Greenville Technical Charter on senior night. In the girls' game the Chesnee Eagles picked up a big Region I-2A win as they downed the Liberty Red Devils 51-46 on Friday night. "It feels great to pick up this win," said Chesnee senior Haley Edmonds. "We needed this win to have a chance at the playoffs and Coach Byers told us before the game to treat this as a playoff game and we did just that." The first quarter was highlighted by three different mini runs as the Eagles opened on a 6-2 run thanks to three pointers from Bixley Koon and Pearl Holloway. Anna Belle King and Trinity Garrett each sank a shot for the Red Devils to quickly tie the game at six all but the Eagles' Carlee Turner responded with a three pointer as they closed the quarter on a 5-2 run to take an 11-8 lead into the second quarter. The Eagles drained four three pointers in the second quarter to give them seven made in total for the first half. Pearl Holloway and Carlee Turner each drained their second of the half in the quarter and Haley Edmonds drained a pair in the second quarter to give the Eagles a 25-17 halftime lead. After draining seven three-pointers in the first half the Eagles only hir two in the second half as they started getting baskets from inside the arc. One player from the Eagles who took advantage of it was Pearl Holloway, as she scored 17 points in the second half with only one made three after she scored six points in the first half off of a pair of threes. "We were able to spread the ball around and find a good shot," said Holloway. "As we made shots from the outside it opened things up inside." The Red Devils opened the second half on a 6-0 run to cut the Eagle lead to two points, but a Jayla Dunn put back stopped the run. The Eagles responded with an 18-6 to take a 43-29 lead into the final frame. Holloway scored six of the Eagles eight points in the final frame to help fight off a Red Devil rally for the 51-46 win. Holloway led all scorers with 23 points, and Haley Edmonds added 11 points for the Eagles. Addison Roberts led the Red Devils with nine points while Savannah Welborn-Zellars, Anna Belle King, and Natalie Freeman etched added eight points each. |
