CHESNEE, SC - With the athletic schedules of teams around the state being shifted because of the approach of Hurricane Ian, the Chesnee volleyball team kept everything pretty normal as they extended their winning streak to three straight matches with a 3-1 road victory over Landrum on Thursday afternoon.
After falling to the Cardinals earlier this season at home, the Eagles looked to return the favor on Thursday. The first set was a constant back and forth affair as both teams were tied at 25-25 before Chesnee scored the final two points of the set to take a 27-25 victory in the set and a 1-0 lead in the match. Landrum battled back to even the match at 1-1 after winning the second set over the Eagles 25-18. The third set had a similar feel to the first set as Chesnee held a 24-23 lead and were able to take a 2-1 match lead with a 25-23 victory in the set. While the fourth set was close the Eagles were able to win the match 3-1 after winning the set 25-22 and during that set, they got two big ace serves from Emma Barrington. "The girls played unbelievable tonight," said Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley. "There were times where we could have given back the set, but the girls never did. They really showed great heart and determination tonight." Chesnee got an even more impressive night than usual from Pearl Holloway as she recorded a triple-double with 11 kills, 24 assists, and 22 digs along with 1.5 blocks and two ace serves. Haley Edmonds and Harley Grady gave the Eagles a very strong night on the defensive side of the net as Edmonds had 21 digs with three ace serves and Grady added 11 digs of her own. On the offensive side of the net the Eagles had four different players combine for 24 kills as Olivia Richey (8), Carlee Turner (6), Maggie Blanton (5), and Hayden Roberts (5) worked to control the net. Jayla Dunn also added two solo blocks and two block assists on Thursday. Chesnee now improves to 5-2 in region play and will next travel to Greer Middle College on Tuesday for another region matchup. CHESNEE GIRLS GOLF The Chesnee girls golf team went to Leesville, SC on Thursday to compete in the Ponderosa Golf Tournament and returned to Chesnee with the championship. Chesnee won the tournament with a team score of 347, as they were the best out of twelve teams in the tournament finishing five shots ahead of second place Aynor (353) and ten shots ahead of third place Daniel (357). Fellow local school Landrum finished in fifth place with a score of 418. The Eagles were led by All-Tournament selection Olivia Roberts who shot a score of 81 on Tuesday, as the top three Chesnee golfers shot a score of 88 or below.
