The Chapman Panthers got a strong start from Austin Parr on the mound and used a big three run fourth inning to down the Chesnee Eagles 4-3 in a key Region II-3A baseball contest on Tuesday night.
Chapman starting pitcher Austin Parr had an impressive outing that kept the Eagles off balance as he pitched all seven innings while striking out ten and only allowing two runs. He started his performance out with three strikeouts against the first six batters he faced. Chesnee did manage to break the ice in the bottom of the second as Austin Brown drew a walk and courtesy runner Curtis Stacey scored on a Matthew Wood single. Drake Pike led off the third inning for the Panthers with a single to left and would later come around to score on a ball off the bat of Jake Murray to tie the game at one. Blake Scruggs would give Chesnee their second straight inning of having the leadoff hitter reach base in the bottom of the third by reaching on a Panther error. Scruggs would later come around and score along with Austin Brown on a Jacob Henson two RBI single. Chapman would regain the lead with a three run fourth inning as Drake Pike and Nelson Crooke both had RBIs in the inning while the Panthers also added an additional run on a Chesnee error. Austin Brown pitched well for Chesnee as he pitched five innings and allowed seven hits while striking out two. Chase Carver came on in relief and pitched back to back scoreless frames in the sixth and the seventh innings for the Eagles while striking out three and allowing only one hit. "Chase did a great job,” said Chesnee coach Scott Wease. “When they took the lead we brought him in and he held them there giving us a shot. Unfortunately we weren't able to pull it out." Chapman moves to 3-0 in region play and will face fellow region teams Carolina and Broome later this week. Chesnee falls to 0-2 in region and will host Chase on Wednesday before traveling to East Rutherford on Thursday to close out the week. Chesnee has found its new man to lead the football program as they officially hired Clay Lewis on Tuesday night to replace former head coach Bill Owens who resigned earlier this year.
Lewis will be coming to Chesnee after being at Hibriten High School in Lenoir, NC since 1989 and has been the head coach of the program since 2010 where he has compiled a 95-29 record. Hibriten has experienced a lot of success with Lewis at the helm especially over the last two years where they have gone 30-1 while winning the NC 2AA State Championship in 2017 and the team fell just short of a repeat appearance this past season. "I am very excited about becoming the new head coach at Chesnee High School" said Coach Lewis in a statement released by Spartanburg County District 2. "After being the head coach of a successful program for the last nine years, I am looking for a challenge. I have heard that this is a community that gets behind its football team and my family and I are ready to be a part of it." Coach Lewis played college football at both East Carolina and Lenior-Rhyne Universities after completing his high school career at South Roberson High School in Rowland, NC. Chesnee will host a meet the new coach event at the school on April 8 at 6:30 PM. The Broome Centurions used a six run sixth inning to come from behind and down the Chesnee Eagles 6-4 on Friday night.
Both starting pitchers came out strong in the first inning as Broome's Rylan Brown and Chesnee's Chase Carver both struck out two batters a piece in the opening inning. Brown added two more strikeouts in the second while Carver added another to his total. With two outs in the third Chesnee's Matthew Wood got on base with the help of a Broome error. Kyler Reagan and Landon Thompson followed with back to back doubles as Reagan's double plated Wood and Reagan scored on Thompson's double. Chesnee added another run in the top of the sixth as Blake Scruggs lead off with a double and scored on Gabe Murabito's RBI triple. Ethan Crump got the Centurion's big sixth inning started as he was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before scoring on Harrison Howell sacrifice bunt. A mixture of Chesnee errors and an RBI from Braxton Turner plus two RBIs from Crump in his second at-bat of the inning would lead to six Broome runs. Chesnee tried to rally in the seventh inning as Matthew Wood hit a one out single and later came around to score on Blake Scruggs' RBI single but that would be all for the Eagles. Chesnee got a strong performance from Chase Carver as he pitched 4 2/3 innings and scattered three hits while striking out five while getting a no-decision because of the rally by the Centurions Jeb Dawson got the win for Broome and Bryson Ricketts picked up the save. The Chesnee Lady Eagles used a big six run first to down the Chapman Lady Panthers 10-2 in a rare non-region match up between the region rivals.
Chapman got the game off to a fast start as Kera Mason and Parker Morin both had RBI's in the top of the first to give Chapman a 2-0 lead. Chesnee responded in a big way in the bottom of the first as six of the first seven Lady Eagles that stepped up to the plate got on base leading the Lady Eagles to score six runs in the inning after big at bats from Shenandoah Bishop, Sierra Bowen Mattie Martin, and Paige Scruggs. Chesnee's Sierra Bowen hit her first career homerun in the bottom of the second to extend the Lady Eagle's lead to 7-2. The Eagles Becca Watson nearly made it back to back homeruns as her double to left field hit the top of the fence and just stayed in the park. Watson didn't miss on her next at-bat though as she hit a towering shot to left field for her first homerun of the season "I asked both of them if they were trying to hit it out and they said no," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "We have been hitting the ball well and I knew they would run into to one eventually. It just so happened tonight was the night." Chesnee's Olivia Gardner made a beautiful diving catch in right field in the top of the fifth to end a potential Lady Panthers rally and was just one of many great defensive plays by the Eagles on Thursday night. "All of our girls work hard defensively. They come out here and take balls when nobody is here on Saturday and Sunday," said Coach Fogle. "I don't think there is all a ball that comes off the bat that Olivia Gardner hasn't seen before and that is all because of preparation." Chesnee's Sam Carver rounded out the scoring for the Eagles with a two RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 10-2 in favor of Chesnee. Ali Scruggs picked up the win in the circle for the Eagles after she limited the Panthers to only two hits for the remainder of the game after surrendering two runs in the top of the first inning. "We weren't surprised at all by Ali's performance," said Coach Fogle. "She located her pitches well and she fights like a bulldog out there." The Eagles will return to action on Monday when they travel to Landrum. The Chesnee Eagles golf team played back-to-back competitions on Tuesday and Wednesday with a first place and third place finish while Garrett Cooper has been the medalist in both events.
The Eagles shot a combined 158 on Tuesday night finishing eight shots behind winner Dorman and four shots behind host Mauldin at Holly Tree Country Club in Simpsonville. On Wednesday afternoon the Eagles bounced back by improving their score by ten shots from Tuesday as they shot a combined 148 at Village Greens Golf Course. They defeated Chapman (176) and Landrum (209) by over twenty shots on Wednesday and Chesnee head golf coach Andy Pitt is said he is happy with the improvement he has seen in his team. "Our team is coming along as three of our last four matches have seen us shoot in the 140's," said Coach Pitt. "Consistently shooting scores in that range will have us trending in the right direction." Garrett Cooper won medalist honors on both days as he tied Dorman's Thomas Hollingsworth with a score of 35 on Tuesday and then shot another 35 on Wednesday afternoon to claim sole medalist honors. Coach Pitt believes that Cooper still has room to grow despite having two impressive outings this week. "Garrett had a solid week for us this week and earning two medalist honors while not being on top of his game is a confidence boost," said Coach Pitt. "He's still got some things to clean up and room to grow. I'm excited to see him progress moving forward." The Eagles will be back in competition on Monday and Tuesday as they travel to Beech Creek in Sumter to play in the Magnolia Invitational. Broome used a big first inning that saw them score six runs on their way to an 8-2 victory over the Chesnee Lady Eagles on Thursday night.
Broome sent ten batters to the plate in the first inning as Melissa Tucker and Ansley Frady both had two RBI doubles while Peyton Sullivan added an RBI double of her own. Both Tucker and Sullivan's doubles came with two outs in the inning. Broome pitcher Hailey Wells got off to a strong start as she retired the first nine Eagles batters she faced. The Centurions would add two more runs in the second as Frady added her third RBI of the night on a sacrifice fly to center and Mattie Reid hit a RBI single to score Madison Cash. Despite a tough start Chesnee pitching would settle down after the second as they only allowed four hits over the final five innings and no runs. "Our pitchers they battle and fight," said Chesnee Head Coach Tripp Fogle. "You're not going to spin it perfect every night and that happened to us tonight. Paige made some adjustments and things got better for us." Chesnee got a big defensive play in the top of the fourth from center fielder Shenandoah Bishop as she made a diving grab for the final out on a ball headed for the gap. "All of our outfielders have done a great job defensively and not a single one of us in the dugout were surprised she caught it.," said Coach Fogle. In the bottom of the fourth the Eagles would plate two runs as Ali Scruggs would drive in Hannah Henderson for the Lady Eagles first run and later in the in inning Sierra Bowen would score on a double steal. Sam Carver pitched the final two innings for the Eagles as she set down all six Broome batters she faced. The Chesnee Lady Eagles got a big win over the defending 2A Upper State Champion Landrum Cardinals behind an explosive offense as the Eagles got production from the entire lineup.
"We have harped on just having good quality at-bats and hitting the ball hard," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "Our girls have worked their tails off after getting embarrassed last week. Instead of pouting our girls came to work and I think that made a difference tonight." Landrum got the game off to a fast start as Michelle Suddeth hit a leadoff homerun over the center field fence to give the Lady Cardinals a quick 1-0 lead. That wasn't the only great play from Suddeth in the first as she also made an amazing diving catch in the bottom half of the inning on a hard hit ball by Chesnee's Becca Watson. The Lady Eagles got their offense going in the bottom of the second inning as six consecutive Chesnee batters reached base with two outs. Paige Scruggs got the rally started with a sharp single that was followed by a Shenandoah Bishop double and a Sam Carver walk to load the bases. Hannah Henderson would drive in the first runs for Chesnee with a two RBI single before back to back doubles from Mattie Martin and Sierra Bowen scored three more runs. The Eagles' Sam Carver would lead off the bottom of the fourth with a single and after back to back walks Sierra Bowen singled to drive in two runs to give her four RBIs on the night. The Eagles added to their lead two batters later when Becca Watson hit a two RBI single of her own. Landrum got a run back in the top of the sixth inning with a RBI from Shana Davis. Carver ended the game for an Eagles victory with a three RBI double that scored Kyleigh Thompson, Paige Scruggs, and Shenandoah Bishop to give the Eagles a 12-2 lead after the sixth inning and the win. Chesnee got great production from the entire team as eight of the nine starters for the Eagles recorded a hit and either a RBI or run scored. Paige Scruggs had a nice night for the Lady Eagles as she limited Landrum to eight hits and one run after surrendering the leadoff homerun. "Paige is mentally tough and I was very proud of how she responded after the leadoff home run," said Coach Fogle. "Paige doesn't flinch and our girls just hunker down and fight to see what they can do." The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday at RS Central and will start region play on Friday at home against Broome. RS Central Lady Hilltoppers used back to back big innings in the fifth and the sixth innings to defeat the Chesnee Lady Eagles 12-2.
Chesnee pitcher Sam Carver got the Lady Eagles off to a solid start by striking out three batters through the first two innings. RS Central's Emma Rogers responded for the Lady Hilltoppers by sitting down nine out of the first ten batters she faced and erased the lone base runner on a double play started by a great catch in centerfield by Farryn Smith. The Lady Hilltoppers got on the board in the top of the third inning when Maddie Summers had a RBI double and was soon followed by Katie Hunt with another RBI single to give RS Central a 2-0 lead. Chesnee would respond in the fourth inning as Sierra Bowen hit a laser to dead center field for a RBI double while Ali Scruggs followed it up with a single to plate another run. Katie Hunt and Kadence Hopper helped the Lady Hilltoppers pull away in the fifth inning as Hopper hit a three run home run and Hunt got a two RBI single before RS Central added another run on a Chesnee error. Hopper helped RS Central have another big inning in the sixth when she hit her second three run homer of the game. Maddie Summers added a solo home run to push the RS Central lead to the final margin of 12-2. Hopper had a huge night for RS Central as she went 2-4 with two home runs and six RBIs. Summers, and Hunt also had big nights as Hunt went 3-4 with three RBIs while Summers went 3-4 with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs. Chesnee will be back in action on Monday night at home against Landrum. The Chesnee Lady Eagles gave new softball head coach Tripp Fogle the start to his coaching career that he wanted in a 5-2 win over Woodruff, a good team win with timely hitting mixed with good pitching and defense.
"I am just proud of our girls," said Coach Fogle about winning his first game as head coach. "They are warriors and they work hard. It is nice to get that first win." Chesnee got things started in the top of the first as Sam Carver lead off with a walk and advanced to second base on a Hannah Henderson sacrifice bunt. Mattie Martin followed with a sharp single to left field before promptly stealing second base. The Lady Eagles were able to take advantage of two Lady Wolverine wild pitches to plate both Carver and Martin. The two early runs gave Chesnee pitcher Paige Scruggs momentum going into the bottom of the first and she would send the Lady Wolverines down in order with the last two outs coming via fly-outs to her sister Ali Scruggs. In the top of the second, a walk by Olivia Gardner and back to back singles by Ali Scruggs and Sam Carver would load the bases for the Lady Eagles. They could only manage one run though as Woodruff's Olivia Patton got two straight pop ups to end the threat before anymore damage could be done. In the bottom half of the inning the Lady Wolverines responded as a walk by Brooke Bailey and a Chesnee error followed by an RBI single by Natalie Montjoy cut Chesnee's lead to 3-1 after two innings of play The Lady Eagles led off the top of the third with back to back singles from Sierra Bowen and Becca Watson while Kyleigh Thompson followed with a sacrifice to advance both runners before a wild pitch would plate Bowen. Pitcher Paige Scruggs would help her own cause on a RBI bunt single that brought home Watson to give Chesnee a 5-1 lead in the middle of the third inning. The Lady Wolverines once again responded with back to back to back singles wtih the last one coming from Olivia Patton that drove in Madison Jacobi. The Lady Eagles were able to cut down Haley Knox at the plate with a beautiful relay throw from center field to limit the damage to one run. The Chesnee defense was solid behind Scruggs all night as she consistently pitched to contact. "Our focus is to pitch well and play good defense," Coach Fogle said. "I'm really proud of Kyleigh for stepping up in centerfield after Shenandoah Bishop got hurt in practice. All our girls played great on defense tonight." Brooke Bailey lead off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single and that would be the last hit Scruggs would allow for the remainder of the game. Paige Scruggs would finish her complete game effort by sending the Lady Wolverines down in order in the bottom of the seventh. Scruggs scattered five hits on the night while only giving up two runs and recording three strikeouts in seven innings of work. "I told our other two pitchers to warm up in the fourth inning and I think Paige took that as a little bit of a challenge,". Coach Fogle said. "She did exactly what she has done all preseason and last year: throw strikes and let her defense play." Chesnee got contributions from every hitter in the lineup whether it was a hit, a walk or a sacrifice. "We have faith in all of our girls," Coach Fogle said. "If you wear a Chesnee uniform we have faith you can get it done." Chesnee will host R-S Central in their home opener on Wednesday night at 6:30pm |
