CHESNEE, S.C. – It was an all-York County showdown on Thursday night as Catawba Ridge faced off against crosstown rival Fort Mill Yellow Jackets, as the Copperheads set their sights on a second straight championship.
Tillman Chrisley picked the best time to score his lone points of the evening, as he drilled a three pointer from the wing as time expired, lifting Catawba Ridge to a 53-50 overtime victory over Fort Mill. “Anytime these two teams play, it’s always highly competitive,” said tournament director Andy Pitt. “They’re two very well-coached teams. For it to go into overtime and come down to a buzzer beater shot at the end, it was fitting because I feel like we had a good three days here at the Roundball Classic. It’s definitely something for all of these teams to build on moving forward to the post-Christmas grind of region play.” Entering the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets held a seven-point lead, but both sides had a hard time creating much separation in the stanza due to each side’s defense. Late in the frame, Fort Mill’s Zach Jennings and Catawba Ridge’s Owen Elliott traded triples, which brought the game to a 41-all deadlock with under two minutes to play in regulation. “You don’t come to this tournament in search of wins,” Pitt stated. “You come to this tournament with the teams that we have and the quality here to find out who you are. I think that everybody has a better sense of themselves after these three days because there were no easy games for anybody. “We had overtime games and others came down to making free throws. To end things the way that the championship game did on a buzzer beater just goes to show you how competitive this tournament was. It’s what we aim to do each year.” Three Copperheads finished in double figures, led by Grant Lovette with a game-high 21 points, while Lance Barnes had 14 and Owen Elliott notched 12 points, respectively. Braylen McCain led Fort Mill with 12 points along with AJ Washington (9) and Zach Jennings (8). Union County 62, Chesnee 39 The Yellow Jacket used a stingy defense and corralled 16 offensive rebounds in their victory over the Eagles. Kaylob Blanton scored a team-high 10 points for the Eagles, followed by Hayden Barnett with nine and Dawson Pruitt with eight, respectively. Union County was led by Ty Jeter with a game-high 12 points, along with 10 points from Keishawn Gibson. All-Tournament Selections – Keishawn Gibson (Union County), Daniel Wease (Chesnee) Hillcrest 75, Boiling Springs 45 After a tightly contested first half where each club had a player quickly find their way into double digit scoring, the Rams clamped down on both the offensive and defensive boards in the second 16 minutes of the contest. Tre Locklear tallied a team-high 19 points for Boiling Springs, along with 12 points from Dominque Johnson. Israel Hall paced the Rams with a game-high 28 points, followed by Brayden King with 18 points and Chavis Lee-Carter with 10. When all the Christmas presents have been opened this holiday season there will still be one more present under the tree for local basketball fans as the Chesnee basketball team will host their fifth annual Chesnee Roundball Classic on December 27, 28, and 30th. The field contains teams beaming with accomplishments over the years in both South Carolina and North Carolina high school basketball. The first game of the tournament features High Point Academy and the Greer Yellow Jackets. High Point brings with it the prestige of being last year's 1A state champion that returns some key players from last year's team. They are team that shoots the ball well from the outside and is no stranger to playing in big game situations as their early season games have seen them competing against some tough competition like Gaffney, Wren, and Legion Collegiate. Greer had a young team last year that got a lot of experience and brings that experience into this season. They have a 6'4" post player in Jaleel Skinner who is averaging 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks so far this season. Skinner also teams up with 6'5" Cody Cowan who is averaging 11 points and 5 rebounds a game. The second game of the opening day features East Rutherford Cavaliers, a three time champion of the tournament, and Great Falls Red Devils, who have won ten state titles in the state of South Carolina. East Rutherford will be entering the tournament this season with notable change as they will be entering the tournament with a completely different head basketball coach as former coach Brad Levine left the school to take over as the coach at Crest High School. Levine was replaced by Larry Ross who is no stranger to the tournament as he was previously the head coach of the East Rutherford girl's team who has won the girl's bracket of the tournament in year's past. The Cavaliers are led by seniors Antonio Ledbetter who runs the offense with some help from shooter Owen Chapman and while the person leading the team may be different the Cavaliers bring some lofty expectations to a tournament that has basically been a second home for them in past seasons. Great Falls also is dealing with a coaching change as interim coach Alex Fair takes over for former basketball coach Jimmy Duncan who left to take over the athletic director job at Northwestern High School earlier this school year. The Red Devils like the Cavaliers bring with them some lofty expectations as they are ten time 1A state champion who fell just last season fell in a hard fought Upper State championship game to eventual state champion High Point. Great Falls brings with them one of the top players in the state and Winthrop commit Kelton Talford. Talford is a 6'7" post player who creates major problems for teams under the basket but can also play along the perimeter which only adds to the nightmares of most coaches scheming defenses to stop the Red Devils. The third game features the Boiling Springs Bulldogs who will face the Blacksburg Wildcats. Boiling Springs plays in one of the toughest regions in the state, Region II-5A, that contains three of the top 10 5A teams in the state. The Bulldogs are a young team as they graduated seven seniors last season but is a team that looks to use their athleticism to force defenses into making mistakes. The Bulldogs are led on offense by junior Corey Johnson who has scored over twenty points in two of his last four games and on his way to a third before going out to an injury against Broome two games ago. They also look to get key contributions from junior guard Cam Earls and sophomore Trey McManus who both have scored over twenty points a game at points this season. The Blacksburg Wildcats are a long and athletic team that loves to run a fast paced game forcing teams into trouble on defense and capitalizing on those turnovers to get easy buckets on offense. Jackson Gore is a 6'3" point guard who leads the Wildcats offense by attacking the rim and can also shoot from the outside. Gore also has a lot of help from 6'5" Shaun Garrison who can play any position from point guard to center and a lot like Talford from Great Falls is a matchup nightmare for most opposing coaches. The fourth game features the host Chesnee Eagles who will face the newest school in the Fort Mill area, the Catawba Ridge Copperheads. Chesnee is a team that was young last season and like Greer in the first matchup is looking to build on the experience they gained last season to put together a run this year. They are led by 6'2" junior guard Nyquille O'Fair who leads the Eagles in scoring averaging 14.4 points a game and over two steals a game. The Eagles also are getting some impressive post play from sophomore KJ Valentine who averages 7.6 points a game and seven rebounds a game while also getting key contributions from junior Cole Hoskyns who is averaging over seven points a game and almost five rebounds a game. The biggest unknown in the tournament this season is the Catawba Ridge Copperheads as they are in their first season of competition as the school just opened this fall. The team is 3-5 so far in their first season and are led on offense by junior guard Davante Gonzalez who is averaging 10.4 points a game with three steals a game while also getting over eight points a game from 6'7" junior Luke Krawczyk and 6'5" sophomore Carter Hendrick. Hendrick also leads the team in rebounds averaging almost seven rebounds a game. For fans looking to check out the Chesnee Roundball Classic tickets start at $5 or fans can buy a tournament pass for $20 which will be good for entry into all three days of the tournament. Games start each day at 3:00 PM and there will be concessions available each day of the tournament. On Saturday morning the Chesnee Eagles used a thirty-three point third quarter and a huge second half by senior Dez Tate to capture an 80-61 victory over Berea on the final day of the 2018 Lowe's Roundball Classic. At the end of the first quarter the Eagles went scoreless for almost three minutes before a layup by sophomore Nyquille O'Fair ended the drought and kept Chesnee within four at the quarter break as Berea led 17-13. The second quarter went back and forth constantly as the Eagles would tie the game only to see Berea recapture the lead until the last minute of the half saw Chesnee go on a 6-0 run and capture a 31-29 lead on a layup by senior Ahmad Smith as time expired in the half. After being held to only four points in the first half Dez Tate helped lead a third quarter charge by the Eagles as he scored eleven of his twenty-one points in the third quarter helping spurn Chesnee to a twenty-one point lead as they led Berea 64-43 after three quarters. Tate ended the game with a double-double as he also recorded eleven rebounds on Saturday. "I think Dez scoring eleven points in the third quarter was huge," said Chesnee Head Coach Andy Pitt. "Not only the points but he also had some very key assists for us." Tate wasn't the only Eagle to have an impressive game on Saturday morning as Chesnee also had two other players capture double-doubles as junior Matthew Lawter scored eleven points while getting ten rebounds and freshman K'Jymie Valentine got ten points while grabbing fourteen rebounds. Senior Ahamd Smith also had a good game for the Eagles as he led all scorers in the game with twenty-three points. "Our post players (Matthew Lawter and K'Jymie Valentine) having big games for us today was huge," said Coach Pitt. "Both guys had their first career double-doubles and each had assists while playing all around good games." Chesnee's Dez Tate was named to the Lowe's Classic All-Tournament team. The Eagles will return to play on January 3 as they travel to Chase High School in North Carolina. Lady Eagles Fall Short In Fifth Place Game Against Panthers In the fifth place game at the Lowe's Classic the Chesnee Lady Eagles fell to Chapman 43-35 on Saturday afternoon as they were unable to recover from an early eight point first quarter deficit.
The Panthers jumped out to a 16-8 lead at the end of the first quarter but the deficit was too much as both teams scored twenty-seven points a piece over the last three quarters. The Eagles got another impressive performance from junior Abbey Ray who got her second double-double of the tournament as she recorded fifteen points and fifteen rebounds on Saturday. With the back-to-back double-doubles Ray was named to the Lowe's Classic All-Tournament team. Chapman junior Paige Aho led all scorers in the game on Saturday as she scored twenty-six points for the Panthers and was also named to the Lowe's Classic All-Tournament team. The Lady Eagles will return to action on January 3 at Chase High School in North Carolina. The Chesnee Lady Eagles got a double double-double from senior Sierra Bowen and junior Abbey Ray on Friday morning at the Lowe's Classic as the Eagles grabbed their first win of the season with a 45-30 win over Berea. The two teams battled to a low scoring first quarter but when the quarter was over the Eagles held on to a 6-4 lead. After the first quarter though it was all Eagles as they outscored Berea 39-26 over the last three quarters to capture the victory. The real advantage for the Eagles came during the second quarter as they outscored the Bulldogs 14-7 to grab a 20-11 halftime lead. Abbey Ray helped lead the Eagles in the first half as she scored eight of her fourteen points in the first half. Ray ended the game with fourteen points, twelve rebounds, and a steal on Friday morning. She also was clutch for the Eagles in the fourth quarter as she was six for six from the free throw line in the last three minutes of the game to help clinch the victory. "Abbey is such a presence for us in the post," said Chesnee Head Coach Carey Burns. "We know that if there is a rebound to be had Abbey is going to get it for us." In the second half the Eagles were able to keep distance between them and Berea as Sierra Bowen scored fourteen of her game high sixteen points in the second half. Bowen ended the game with sixteen points, ten rebounds, two steals, and a block. "Sierra is my leader on the court," said Coach Burns. "I told the girls that we needed to start driving to the basket and Sierra started doing that for us. Once that happened it just opened up the rest of our offense." With the victory the Eagles collected their first victory of the season and it's something that the team has been waiting on. "It has been a long time coming," said Coach Burns. "I talked to the girls before the game about perseverance and they have really fought through a lot of obstacles this year and I couldn't be more proud of them." With the victory the Eagles will play Chapman in the fourth place game on Saturday at 1:00 PM. Day 2 Recap
