Chesnee knew going into Monday night that they had two opportunities to win the District Championship if they needed to. Austin Brown did his job on the mound and the Chesnee bats made sure they only needed one game.
Brown pitched 5 1/3 innings, scattering 5 hits and allowing 1 run while striking out 4. The Chesnee defense was solid behind Brown as Luke Cash and Colin Turner both made several nice plays, and Nolan Hammett made some nice picks at first base. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease was pleased with his Junior right hander's performance, "Austin did an excellent job. He threw two pitches well, fastball and changeup, and spotted the fastball. He made them put it in play, and that is all we can ask for, and we made the plays defensively. " The Chesnee bats came alive early as the scored in each of the first three innings. In the 1st inning, Dawson Williamson hit a infield single and Kobe Miller was able to score from 1st with the help of some Gray Collegiate errors. In the 2nd, Blake Scruggs hit a leadoff single and eventually came around to score on a balk call. In the 3rd, Dawson Williamson hit a lead off single and stole 2nd base. Nate Lamb hit a shallow fly ball that was misplayed by the Gray Collegiate fielder in fair territory and rolled out of play to score Williamson. Colin Turner drove in Lamb with a RBI single. In the 5th, Blake Scruggs hit an RBI double to score Nolan Hammett, but the Eagles stranded Colin Turner, Matthew Wood, and Kip Bagwell to leave the bases loaded. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease was pleased with how his team was able to take advantage of Gray Collegiate mistakes and create opportunities of their own, "our guys can run a little bit and we are blessed with some team speed, that causes teams to have to hurry and get rid of it and that causes errant throws. The ball hit to the shortstop was a big league pop-up by Nate, and when it hit his glove it took off out of play and we got another run because of it." Bo Walker came on to pitch in the 6th and was able to help the Eagles seal the district championship. The 2A upper state bracket is set as Ninety-Six will travel to Chesnee on Thursday and Cheraw will travel to Blacksburg. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease is pleased his team has completed two of it's goals to start the season, "it is definitely big that we won game one and didn't have to play two, that is always a positive. That was our mindset coming in, we told them before the game to take care of it in the first game and enjoy it, and tomorrow we will come back and prepare for the first game of upper state. " For five innings, Chesnee's Sam Carver and Cheraw's Bailey Pace battled in a great pitchers dual. While batting in the bottom of the 5th, Chesnee pitcher Sam Carver took a pitch to the lower part of her leg that knocked her to the ground . Carver tried her best to battle through the pain, but the injury hampered her in the circle.
In the 5 innings pitched before the injury, Carver struck out 5 and scattered 6 hits while pitching a shutout. In the final two innings, Cheraw scored 6 runs to win 6-0 to advance to the District Championship on Wednesday. Cheraw scored two in the 6th on a two RBI double by Abby Kulo. Cheraw added four more in the 7th with RBI double by Eryn Butler, a two RBI double by Bailey Pace, and a RBI single by Jazz Dixon. Chesnee's Mattie Martin had a nice night at the plate, both as a batter and defensively at Catcher. Martin went 2-2 with a walk at the plate and made a nice throw to throw out a Lady Brave trying to swipe 2nd in the top of the 4th. Cheraw finished the regular season in a four-way tie for the region championship, but after tiebreakers finished with the 4th seed going into the playoffs. Chesnee Head Coach Ashley Height knew going in her team had a tough task ahead of them "Cheraw comes out of one the toughest regions in upper state and we knew they were good. We knew they were a four seed, but that didn't matter. We played them last year, and knew they didn't lose a whole lot. For our young team to battle like that with them was awesome." The Lady Eagles will be back in action Monday when they take on the Gray Collegiate Lady War Eagles in a elimination game. Nate Lamb allowed one hit over 6 innings of work while striking out 14 and the Chesnee offense scored 3 runs in the 3rd as the Eagles won 4-1 over Central Pageland to advance to the District Championship on Monday.
Nate Lamb got rolling early as he retired the first twelve Central Pageland batters in order and struck out the side in three different innings. Lamb ran into some trouble in the 6th when he allowed his only run and Central got it's only base hit, but Lamb and the Chesnee defense did great job limiting Central to just one run and keep the Eagles out in front. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease was pleased with his Senior Ace's performance, "He was the dominant guy we knew he could be. He got himself into a bind in the 6th, and did a good job getting out of it. I'm proud of the way he threw". The Chesnee defense was solid behind Lamb. Luke Cash made a great play at shortstop in the top of the 1st to rob a sure base hit, and Cash also made another great play in the 6th to prevent a ground ball from leaving the infield and possibly scoring multiple runs. Bo Walker came on in the 7th to record his 2nd save of the week. Walker pitched 3 innings this week and only allowed one hit while striking out 3 in relief. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease was pleased with how Walker performed in relief, "Bo is another senior we feel like can throw strikes when we need him to come into situations like that. He did a great job for us tonight." Offensively for the Eagles, Colin Turner had a big night at the plate as he went 2-3 with a double and 3 RBIs. The Chesnee offense got rolling in the 3rd as the Eagles loaded the bases and Colin Turner hit a pop up in no man's land in right field that Central Pageland was unable to catch. Dawson Williamson and Joey Foos, courtesy runner for Lamb, scored on the play. Blake Scruggs followed Turner with a RBI double of his own. In the 6th, Colin Turner hit a double to drive in Nate Lamb after Lamb's double earlier in the inning to increase the Chesnee lead to 4-0 at that point. Tomorrow at noon, Central Pageland will travel to Gray Collegiate and the winner will play Chesnee on Monday at 5pm in the District Championship. The Eagles only have to win once to advance to the Upper State Tournament, and must lose twice to be eliminated Facing a 3-2 deficit heading into the bottom of the tenth inning, the Chesnee Lady Eagles rallied at home against the Abbeville Lady Panthers on Friday Night. Sierra Bowen delivered a game-winning single with two outs to seal the 4-3 victory for the Lady Eagles. The Lady Eagles advance to the next round where they will host Cheraw on Saturday at 6pm. Abbeville will travel to Gray Collegiate on Saturday in an elimination game.
Abbeville’s Reghan Steifle hit an RBI single in the first inning and pitched a complete game. She struck out eight batters and gave up five hits across ten innings of work, while walking four batters. Kaleigh Lollis finished 2-5 at the plate for Abbeville with two singles and one run scored. Paige Scruggs pitched a complete game for the Lady Eagles, picking up the win. She struck out four batters and walked only one. She also had a single at the plate. Sam Carver finished 2-5 with a single, a double, and an RBI. She delivered the game-tying RBI double in the bottom of the tenth inning and would go on to score the game-winning run. Sierra Bowen finished 2-4 with two singles and a walk. She finished the night with two RBI and delivered the game-winning hit for the Eagles in the bottom of the tenth to send them to the next round. The Chesnee Eagles scored 5 runs in the first 3 innings on their way to a 6-4 win over the Southside Christian Sabres in the opening game of the District Tournament. Chesnee will face Central Pageland on Thursday, the winner will advance to the District Championship on Monday. Southside Christian will travel to Gray Collegiate in a elimination game.
After Southside Christian scored a run on a Jeremy Costin RBI single in the top of the 1st, Chesnee responded with a run in the bottom half of the 1st as Nolan Hammett hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Dawson Williamson. Kobe Miller, Luke Cash, and Blake Scruggs hit back-to-back-to-back doubles to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead in the 2nd and the Eagles never looked back. The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the 3rd as Colin Turner hit a RBI single to drive in Nolan Hammett, and Joey Foos(courtesy runner for Turner) scored after a Southside Christian throwing error. In the 5th, Colin Turner drew a walk and was eventually driven in on a Luke Cash sacrifice. Cash finshed 2-2 with two doubles and two RBIs and Miller went 2-4 with a RBI. The speedy combo of Cash and Miller not only caused havoc at the plate, but also on the base paths with their speed. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease was pleased to see the seniors come through for the Eagles, "those guys with the speed they have if they can get on base and make somethings happen we can score some runs. It was good to see Kobe back swinging the bat well and have some success." Colin Turner had a solid start on the mound for the Eagles as he allowed 4 runs over 5 innings of work, and Bo Walker pitched two scoreless inning to earn the save. Coach Wease was pleased with the performance of his pitchers, "Southside Christian has hit the ball pretty good all year. Colin and Bo, two seniors we have had pitch a lot of games for us, it felt good throwing this guys and they did a good job." Behind a 5-for-5 night from Becca Watson, the Chesnee Lady Eagles downed the Blacksburg Lady Wildcats 11-5 to win 2nd place in region and earn the right to host a home playoff game. According to the SCHSL, the softball playoffs will begin Thursday, April 26. The Lady Eagles will host the #3 seed out of Region II.
The Chesnee Lady Eagles are one of the youngest teams in the area as they at times field a lineup that features 8 9th graders or younger, and that youth came through in a big way. 6 out of the 11 RBIs for the Lady Eagles came from 9th graders or younger, and 10 out of the 11 RBIs came from 10th graders or younger. Earning the #2 seed in region is quite an accomplishment for the young Lady Eagles, and Head Coach Ashley Height is proud of all that her team has accomplished so far this season, "I have said from the very beginning of the year that with us being so young it would be huge for us to be able to host, and I'm excited for these girls, they have worked hard. We have kinda been a little bit of an underdog and they have always fought. We have done things well and done things we need to improve on, but overall these girls are fighters and I'm looking forward to the playoffs." Coach Height said. One freshman in particular had a great night, Becca Watson went 5-5 with a double and two RBIs and she scored two runs. Coach Height was looking for a spark in the lineup and her young first baseman provided, "we have talked about as we move into playoffs about how important it is that all of our bats get going. We needed someone to start it and to have someone like Becca who is high energy and someone like her starting something is huge for the other girls and gets them motivated too." Coach Height said. Shelby Harris and Hannah Henderson both had three RBIs for the Lady Eagles. Harris hit a 3 run inside the park home run and Henderson drove a run a hit by pitch and she hit a two RBI single. Ali Scruggs had two RBIs, she drew a bases loaded walk and hit a sacrifice ground ball to drive in her runs. Madison McSwain and Olivia Gardner each had RBIs for Lady Eagles. Chesnee used a perfect mixture of timely hitting and solid pitching to down Christ Church 2-1 and with a little help from the Landrum Cardinals won their second consecutive Region I-2A title.
Nate Lamb was brilliant on the mound as he allowed one run, struck out 7 Cavalier batters, and he scattered 2 hits over 5 2/3 innings. Austin Brown came in for Lamb when Lamb reached the 85 pitch limit. Brown got out all four batters he faced out including Been Wetenhall, who was called out on a batter interference call as he attempted to steal 2nd base after a lead off single in the 7th. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease was pleased with the performance of both of his pitchers, "Nate did a great job and he always gives us a chance to win. Austin came in in a pressure situation and did exactly what we wanted him to do." Christ Church got on the board 1st in the 2nd inning as Walt Garrison scored on a balk call made my the field umpire. Chesnee responded with an RBI single for Dawson Williamson to score Luke Cash to tie the score at 1. Chesnee would advance a runner to 3rd in both the in both the 4th and the 5th innings. In the top of the 7th, both Kobe Miller and Dawson Williamson beat out infield singles and Nolan Hammett drew a walk to load the bases for the Eagles. With two outs, Blake Scruggs stepped to the plate and line a single to the right fielder that scored Kobe Miller to put the Eagles. Another player they help keep Chesnee in the game was second baseman Gabe Murabito. Murabito made an incredible play to end the 5th that prevented Christ Church's Hayden Brown from scoring. Murabito also started a great catch in the 6th that turned into double play. Dawson Williamson had a solid night at the plate as he went 3-4 and drove in Luke Cash in the top of the 3rd. Nolan Hammett went 1-1, but was able to reach base 4 times as drew was hit by a pitch and walked twice. Chesnee baseball will most likely be back in action on Tuesday as they host Southside Christian. On Monday night, the Chesnee Eagles downed the Christ Church Cavaliers 11-7 in region play to keep pace with the Blacksburg Wildcats. This win means the Eagles have earned the right to host an opening round home game, whether that is as region champion or runner-up is still to be decided.
Chesnee got the scoring started in the 2nd inning as Luke Cash drove in two runs and Kobe Miller hustled to beat out a double play to score another. Joey Foos singled in a run in the 3rd to answer back after Christ Church scored two in the top of the inning. Christ Church would respond and Chesnee would enter the bottom of the 6th trailing 5-4. After a Dawson Williamson single, Nate Lamb quickly put the Eagles back in front for good to start a 7 run inning for the Eagles. Luke Cash had a solid night at the plate for the Eagles as he went 2-4 with 3RBIs. Nate Lamb also had a good night at the plate as he went 3-5 with a double and a home run and he finished with 2 RBIs. Kobe Miller also had two RBIs for the Eagles, and Jonathan Bishop went 2-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. With regular starters Nate Lamb and Colin Turner unable to pitch due pitch limits Chesnee turned to the trio of Bo Walker, Chase Carver, and Austin Brown to help the Eagles win the game. Chesnee Coach Scott Wease was proud of his pitching staff for coming through in a big game "proud of those guys they came in and pounded the zone and we have to make the plays defensively." Chesnee will travel to Christ Church for the final region game of the season. Currently Chesnee and Blacksburg are tied at 7-2 for 1st place in the region. Blacksburg will host Landrum. Chesnee softball need to get a win to likely finish in a two way tie for second in region, and Sam Carver made sure the Lady Eagles got the win with her performance in the circle. The offense came alive behind a 3 RBI night from Becca Watson as the Lady Eagles down the St Josephs Lady Knights 7-0.
Carver struck out 12 and scattered two hits as she kept the Lady Knights off balance at the plate. Carver helped her own cause at the plate as she went 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Chesnee Head Coach Ashley Height was proud of the young freshman, "her and Paige (Scruggs) have done well all season, but it is nice to see her peaking now heading towards the postseason and the big games that are coming up." Becca Watson had a big night for the Lady Eagles as she went 2-2 at the plate with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. Watson is a difference maker in the Lady Eagle lineup, "Becca is just a monster at the plate. She goes after it everytime, and she is somebody's I can count on to pick the team up." Height said about the young first baseman. Sierra Bowen also had a good night at the plate for the Lady Eagles as she went 2-2 with 2 RBIs and two runs scored. Senior outfielder Madison McSwain went 2-3 with 2 runs scored on Senior Night. The Lady Eagles will be back in action Monday at Chapman at 7pm. The Chesnee Lady Eagles fell to the Landrum Lady Cardinals 10-0 in region play on Thursday evening. With this result, if the Lady Eagles win tomorrow night at 5:30 they will likely finish at worst tied for 2nd in region with Blacksburg or will win 2nd outright.
Landrum got the scoring started in the 1st with RBIs from Sarah Price and Caitlyn Cox. Landrum broke the game open with a 5 run 5th inning that included a two run home run from Caitlyn Cox and a inside the park two run home run from Michelle Suddeth. One bright for the Eagles was the play defensively of Shenandoah Bishop and Sierra Bowen. Bishop had several nice catches in centerfield and Bowen made several nice cut off throws to throw out Landrum runners. Tomorrow the Lady Eagles play their final region game of the season against St Josephs at 5:30. If the Lady Eagles win it will mean Chesnee will likely either finish 2nd or finished tie for 2nd. This would be a huge accomplishment for a young Lady Eagles squad, "I've said from the beginning us having such a young team and being able to have a home playoff is huge for us. We are excited to play for a home game. Our girls are ready for that, and coming off tonight they are hungry for more" Chesnee Head Coach Ashley Height said. Tomorrow night is Senior Night for the Lady Eagles. Madison McSwain is the only Senior on a young Lady Eagles squad filled with mostly Freshmen. Coach Height is proud of what McSwain has done for the Chesnee Softball program, " Madi is one of the funniest kids, one of the most energetic kids I've ever coached. She has evolved so much into some we can count on as far as getting on base, but also in the dugout. She keeps people going and keeps people in the game." The Lady Eagles will be back in action tomorrow at 5:30pm in the region finale against St. Josephs at home. |
