CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee boys soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over the Spartanburg Christian Academy Warriors to close out their regular season play on Friday night.
Nathan Lewis netted the first goal for the Eagles off an assist from Caleb Vaca as Vaca later netted a goal of his own in stoppage time to push their lead to 2-0 over the Warriors. Chesnee goalie Mark Bishop had a clean sheet in goal for the Eagles as he didn't allow a goal with numerous save attempts. The Eagles will return to action on Monday night when they travel to Newberry to open the 2A playoffs as kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM. CHESNEE, SC - Tuesday evening turned out to be a historic night for the Chesnee girl's soccer program as they not only held their first senior night but also picked up the first win in program history.
The Eagles downed the Greenville Technical Charter Warriors after winning 3-1 in penalty kicks after concluding regulation tied at 0-0 "This win was well deserved and I couldn't be prouder," said Chesnee head coach Megan Coffey. "They have worked so hard this season and have made huge strides in their development as individuals and as a team. This is only the beginning and I am blessed to have the opportunity to call them my team." The Eagles honored seniors Haley Edmonds, Paola De La Cruz, and Natalie Vasquez before the game. The Eagles used a strong defensive effort led by goalie Perrin Wood as she kept a clean sheet throughout regulation and overtime. Wood continued her impressive effort in penalty kicks as she came up with two massive saves and also scored one of the Eagle's three penalty kick goals. Reagan Crain and Emma Barrington also drilled penalty kicks for the Eagles. The Eagles will conclude the regular season on Friday when they host Spartanburg Christian Academy with a 5:30 PM kickoff. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee Eagles put on a dominating all-around performance to secure the #2 seed in Region I-AA after a 16-0 win in four innings over the Greenville Technical Charter Warriors on Tuesday night.
"This was an important win," said Chesnee head coach Scott Wease. "It was great to honor our four seniors tonight, and they played well. I'm proud of those guys and ready to push forward towards the playoffs with them." Before the game Chesnee honored four seniors in Eli Henderson, Jordan Fitch, Carson Williamson, and Ethan Lawson. Henderson combined with Tucker Johnson to throw a combined no-hitter as Johnson struck out six batters and Henderson struck out four batters of his own as each worked two innings. A first inning walk was the lone blemish for either pitcher in the game. "It feels amazing to go out there and do my job for my team," said Henderson. "It's great when I can help us have success." Every no hitter seems to always feature a terrific defensive play and this game was no exception. In the top of the third inning, centerfielder Carson Williamson made a great diving catch to his left on a hard-hit liner to rob a sure base hit. The Eagles offense only got one on in the top of the first inning but had at least four runners reach base in each of the final four innings thanks to adjusting during the game to a more patient approach. "We knew we would have to wait on pitches to be able to have success," said Ethan Lawson. "We have such quick hands and knew we had to slow them down to have success." The patient approach immediately provided the Eagles with six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Henderson drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly as Kyle Martin and Kohen Orr each followed with two RBI hits with Martin's being a double. Lawson capped off the inning with another sacrifice fly. Martin added two more RBIs to his ledger in the bottom of the third inning and Carson Williamson added another run on a sacrifice fly. Eli Henderson drove in another run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a fielder's choice and Carson Gossett scored on an error. Daniel Wease added a sac fly of his own. Carson Williamson hit the first of two fourth inning triples to drive in a run before later scoring on an error and Ethan Lawson ended the game with a deep two RBI triple. The win earns the Eagles a home game when the playoffs start on Tuesday and the Eagles seniors were proud of that accomplishment. "It's better than having to play on the road," said senior Eli Henderson. "Last year, we didn't get a chance to play at home. This year we do, and it's a dream come true." "It feels amazing to know we get to play in front of our home crowd one more time," said Carson Williamson. "The crowd energy here is so amazing." Chesnee will be back in action on Wednesday when the travel to Chapman for a 7:45 PM first pitch. XHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee softball team downed Landrum 2-1 in eight innings to complete a perfect region schedule for the third straight season in a row on Monday night in front of the home crowd.
"It's great," said Chesnee head softball coach Tripp Fogle when asked his feelings about completing a third straight perfect region schedule. "It's a testament to the consistency of hard work that our girls are willing to put forth. Being able to make this run with 3 individual groups has been special and unique." The low scoring affair was thanks to excellent efforts by both pitchers on each team as Chesnee's Maddie Handy and Landrum's Sydney Price had quite the battle from the pitching circle. Handy scattered four hits while striking out eleven batters as Price scattered four hits while striking out four batters as both pitchers threw complete games. Landrum got on the board first when Abby Hammer hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning, which was one of her two hits on the night. The Eagles struck back in the bottom of the seventh inning as Claire Owens drove in Skylar Barrett to tie the game. Chesnee secured the win in the bottom of the eighth when Natalie Morris drove in Maddie Handy with a key hit. Barrett, Handy, Morris, and Aubrey Aparis each collected a hit for the Eagles on a night that hits were hard to come by. The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday night at 7:30 PM for their regular season finale when they host 1A powerhouse Lewisville. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee Eagles downed the Liberty Red Devils 5-1 to claim the Region I-AA crown, which is the third consecutive year Chesnee has claimed a region championship as the previous two was in Region II-AA. It also marks the fourth region title for softball in school history.
"It's exciting to win another championship," said Chesnee head softball coach Tripp Fogle. "This has taken a lot of effort from a lot of people to reach this point. It was extra special to win it with the little league kids here tonight." In a packed stadium filled with youth softball players from the Chesnee community, the Eagles took the field during pregame festivities with little leaguers representing the community. "It's a testament to these girls playing now that the interest is so high at the younger levels," said Fogle. Chesnee senior pitcher Maddie Handy said it was cool seeing the younger kids looking up to them like she once did the players before her. "It feels great to know all those girls look up to me like I did to the high school players when I was their age." said Handy. After both pitchers tossed a pair of scoreless frames to open the game, the Eagles struck for four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Olivia Tolleson led off the bottom of the third inning with a walk before Claire Owens advanced her to third with a single. Tolleson eventually scored on a double steal and the final three runs of the inning came from consecutive two out RBI singles from Jada Sellars, Maddie Handy, and Emily Pruett. Chesnee added their final run in the fifth inning as Natalie Morris hit the first of her two singles and later scored on Jada Sellars RBI sacrifice groundout. "It feels great to be able to help my team out tonight," said Morris. "Last night I didn't have my best night at the plate. Today, I came out with the mindset that I had to help my team out." The Red Devils made a late rally attempt with three singles by Mackenzie Porter, Holi Griffin, and Scarlett Pittman in the top of the seventh inning. Pittman's single was a RBI single to cut the Eagles lead to 5-1 but that was as close as Liberty would get. Chesnee got a stellar performance in the pitching circle from Maddie Handy as she spun a complete game to earn the win while surrendering one run and scattering five hits while striking out eight. Handy has had to break in a new catcher in middle schooler Ansley Blanton over the last few games, and both couldn't be more pleased with the transition. "I never thought I would be here honestly," said Blanton. "It's thanks to a lot of people helping me get to this moment." "She has been really great," said Handy. "She has really stepped up for us, because we lost our starting catcher to injury. I think she is doing a great job behind the plate." The Chesnee defense was strong behind her all night as the play of the night came in the top of the sixth inning as Skylar Barrett made a beautiful diving catch to rob the Liberty leadoff batter of a sure base hit while Harley Grady also made a great catch to end the sixth inning. "It feels great to know I have them behind me," said Handy. "They give me a lot of confidence. This is our fourth game this week, so I wasn't spinning the ball like I should and they helped me out tonight." The championship is the third consecutive for the Eagles, but the offensive strategy has changed during the run. The 2021 championship team used the home run to score a lot of runs, but this team uses speed and contact to have success. The Eagles will look to cap off region play with a win on Monday as they host Landrum at 7:30 PM. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee Eagles downed the defending AAA state champions, Broome 5-3 in a matchup of county rivals on the same night the Eagles honored their seniors.
Prior to the game the Eagles honored seniors Brandolin Bearfield, Emily Pruett, and Maddie Handy. "It feels good to pick up this win on senior night as it was a celebration of our last year,” said senior Emily Pruett. “We came home with a win as a team tonight.". "This win feels really good,” said senior Brandolin Bearfield. “Last time we played them we lost and it feels really good to bounce back with a win." "I appreciate all the hard work and workman like attitudes these three have,” said Chesnee head softball coach Tripp Fogle. “They show up everyday and work hard and that sets the example for the other girls in our program. I'm so happy we got a win for them." Aubrey Aparis led off the bottom of the first inning with a slap hit single, but that was all for the Eagles got through the first two innings of play. Brandolin Bearfield and Claire Owens got the Chesnee offense fired up as they hit back to back singles to start the bottom of the third inning before Owens drove in Bearfield and later scored on a Skylar Barrett hustle infield single. Broome fired right back in the top of the fourth inning with three runs as Camryn Bennett started things off with a leadoff double. She was followed by back to back singles from Marrah Clippard and Daiton West as West's single drove in Bennett. Emily Anderson had the big blow of the inning with a two RBI single to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Centurions. Bearfield and Owens once again got the Eagles rolling in the bottom of the fourth inning as this time the pair hit back to back singles with two outs. Aparis drove in Bearfield with a RBI single and Owens later scored to give the Eagles the 4-3 lead. "It feels really good to have a big night as I have been out for a week and a half,” said Bearfield. “I came in today for an hour hitting, and got two hits." The Eagles tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Jada Sellars and Emily Pruett hit back to back singles to start the inning before Sellars later scored on Harley Grady's RBI groundout. The Eagles got a big game in the pitching circle from Maddie Handy as she struck out seven in a complete game win. "It feels great to get this win,” said Handy. “We were able to get some hits and scored some runs. My defense had my back tonight, and it feels good that I can trust them." While tonight was about honoring the three seniors who each had nice games, the Eagles also got a nice game from a pair of seventh graders. Claire Owens had a big night at the plate with two hits, two runs scored, and a RBI while Ansley Blanton had a terrific night defensively behind the plate as it was just the second varsity start, and their first home start for the young duo. "We have seen them play in middle school and they have come to our camps,” said Fogle. “It's a testament to our community for how much this whole thing means to everybody to see girls step in and get the job done." Chesnee will be back in action on Friday as they host Liberty with a 6:00 PM start time. RICHBURG, SC - Playing great in the middle innings has been making things come out good in the end for Lewisville.
The Lady Lions beat a good AA Chesnee team Wednesday night in a non-region contest 10-0 in five innings. Lewisville Coach Jerry Thomas said his team has sometimes struggled to put runs on the board in early and late innings, but has been blowing up in-between and that was the case Wednesday. They did get one run on the board in the first, with Sydney Rollins not only reaching base on an error, but getting all the way to third. Emerson Dickman knocked her in with a single to make it 1-0. Chesnee pitcher Emily Pruett was able to get a strikeout and a fly ball out to limit the damage. In the second, Lauren Owens got aboard via another error for Lewisville, but Pruett fielded a pair of infield popups to keep it a one-run game. Then those productive middle innings arrived for Lewisville. Rollins singled to lead off, stole second and then went for another steal. The throw to third was errant, ended up in left field and she came home. Saleena Rollins drew a free pass, stole second and scored on an Alyssa Rollings double. Jordyn Miller knocked her in with a base hit and it was 4-0 Lewisville. They made it 8-0 in the fourth and did all their damage with two outs. Lauren Owens drew a walk and scored on a Sydney Rollins double. Dickman followed with an RBI single, Saleena Rollins singled and then Alyssa Rollings smoked a double to the gap to get two more runs home. Chesnee mounted it only real scoring threat of the night in the top of the fifth, with Jada Sellars reaching on a bloop single and Skylar Barrett drawing a walk. Lewisville pitcher Sarah Owens struck out the next three batters swinging, though, to strand both runners. “When people do get on base, she does a good job of leaving them there,” Thomas said. The game ended on the 10-run mercy rule in the home half of the fifth when Sydney Rollins and Dickman delivered back-to-back two out RBI hits. Sarah Owens allowed only two hits and one walk while striking out 10 in five innings. Sydney Rollins led the offense with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI. “They’re a good team,” Thomas said of Chesnee. “But getting that run in the first was big for us. When we get a lead early we play with a lot of confidence.” Lewisville improved to 17-3 with the win and has won 15 straight games. Chesnee dropped to 12-7 with the loss. *Story courtesy of our friends at the News and Reporter in Chester, SC. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee Eagles needed extra innings to down the East Rutherford Cavaliers 3-2 with a walk off victory in a border battle between two schools less than thirty minutes apart.
The game was scoreless through the first five innings as Chesnee's Maddie Handy as well as East's Aaliyah Fowler and Casse McFarland combined to keep the game scoreless. East got a pair of runs in the top of the sixth innings but the Eagles responded with a run in each of the final three innings. Skylar Barrett drove in a run in the sixth inning as Aubrey Aparis tied the game in the seventh innings to force extras. Emily Pruett hit the game winner in the bottom of the eighth inning as she hit a line drive down the left field line to bring home the winning run for the Eagles. Pruett and Aparis each had two hits for the Eagles. Handy spun a terrific game from the pitching circle for the Eagles as she scattered six hits, and only surrendered one earned run while striking out 10 batters in the complete game win. Chesnee will be back in action on Wednesday night as they travel to Lewisville to take on the Lions with a 7:00 PM scheduled first pitch. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee Eagles staged a three run rally in the seventh inning to force extra frames and downed the Landrum Cardinals 4-3 in eight innings of play to earn a sweep of their rivals keeping them in the race for the top of the Region I-AA standings.
"I'm happy for the kids,” said Chesnee head baseball coach Scott Wease. “Our goal is to finish well, and set ourselves up for the playoffs. They are doing exactly what we want to do, and I'm proud of them." Landrum jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to two runs in the fifth inning along with a run in the seventh. In the fifth, Grady Zipperer started the inning off with a single before Ty Foster reached on an error and Beckett Driggers drove them both in with a double. In the seventh inning, Driggers worked a leadoff walk and later scored on a Harper Gosnell single. Landrum got six strong innings out of their ace, Titus Poore as he only surrendered one run and struck out 12 batters. The biggest at bat of the night for the Eagles could arguably be the final batter Poore faced. Eli Henderson turned an 0-2 hole into a lead off walk to start the seventh inning that proved pivotal as it got Poore lifted from the game. "I'm really proud of him, he didn't let the moment get too big for him,” said Wease about Henderson’s at-bat. “He really battled hard and gave everything he had." "It felt like we really came together in the seventh, and it just all started to click,” said Chesnee’s Jordan Fitch. The Cardinals walked Carson Gossett while Kyle Martin followed with a RBI single. Two batters later, and fresh off the bench as a pinch hitter, Jordan Fitch delivered a deep two base hit to center to tie the game at 3-3. "It felt good off the bat,” said Fitch. “It also felt good knowing that I could help my teammates out." "Jordan hadn't had an at bat in a couple of weeks,” said Wease. “Tonight he stepped right in there to hit the hardest ball of the night to plate two runs for us.” The Eagles got a strong effort on the mound in the top of the eighth inning from Eli Henderson after he came in to close out the seventh. Henderson followed at the plate with a walk to start the eighth inning, his second walk in as many innings. "It feels good to have to good back to back at bats, and to be able to help my team win," Henderson said. Henderson later scored the winning run thanks to a RBI sacrifice fly by Carson Gossett. "It feels great to help my team out, and to contribute in a key spot" Carson Gossett said. Not only would Henderson score the winning run, but by doing so he also earned himself the win on the mound. "I was under pressure, but knew I had to come in and throw strikes,” said Henderson. “It feels good to pick up the win.” Henderson, Ethan Lawson, and Tucker Jonnson each reached base twice for the Eagles as Johnson, Kohen Orr, and Jordan Fitch each had a double for the Eagles. The win helped the Eagles continue to keep pace with Liberty and Blacksburg in the region race, so if the Eagles can win out in region play it sets them up to possibly host a playoff game. The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Broome High School to take on the Centurions with a 7:30 PM first pitch. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee baseball continued their big week with an 8-7 win in nine innings over the Woodruff Wolverines at home on Wednesday night.
"I'm proud of them as we are getting better every night," said Chesnee head baseball coach Scott Wease. "They are starting to believe in themselves and each other and winning is starting to mean something to them. I can't say enough about them tonight." The win was the second of the week as the contest was sandwiched between a pair of key region games, as the Eagles picked up a win in the first of those games on Tuesday evening with a win over Blacksburg. The run scoring got started in the top of the first inning as Carson Tucker drew a two out walk and later scored on Connor Kelly's RBI single. The Eagles clawed back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning as Dawson Pruitt and Tucker Johnson each drew a walk to set the Eagles up with two on and one out. Ethan Lawson drove in the first run of the inning with a RBI single. After an out and an Aiden Greene single loaded the based, Eli Henderson hit a two out two RBI single to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead after one inning of play. The Eagles tacked on another run in the second inning as Kyle Martin and Dawson Pruitt got back-to-back singles to start the inning. Martin later scored on Tucker Johnson's RBI single to make it 4-1. The Wolverines responded with three runs in the top of the third inning as they plated three runs to tie the game at four all. Connor Kelly drove in a run with a RBI single and Collin McAbee followed with a RBI double before Walt Caldwell scored thanks to an error. Chesnee retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kohen Orr hit a RBI double to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead. The Wolverines took the lead as Nemo Cochran and Walt Caldwell led off the fifth with a walk and a hit by pitch. After a double steal, Carson Tucker and Connor Kelly both drove in runs on groundouts to give the Wolverines a 6-5 lead. The Eagles tied the game with two outs in the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings thanks to Carson Gossett's RBI single. Collin McAbee led off the top of the eighth inning with a walk and after McAbee worked his way around to third base, he eventually scored on Whit Harrison's RBI single. Down a run and with two outs in the frame, the Eagles got a huge double from Kohen Orr before Tucker Johnson followed it up with a RBI single to tie the game forcing another inning of baseball. Orr came through once again in the top of the ninth inning as he struck out all three batters he faced to give the Eagles a chance to end the game in the bottom half of the inning. Aiden Greene was hit by a pitch and Carson Gossett drew a walk to set the Eagles up with two on and one out. Kyle Martin delivered his biggest hit on his third one of the night as he hit a walk off RBI single to win the game for the Eagles. "It felt great off the bat," said Martin. "I couldn't have done it without my teammates providing me with an opportunity though." Martin had three hits for the Eagles with an RBI and a run scored. Tucker Johnson and Aiden Greene each had a pair of hits with Johnson also collecting an RBI. Kohen Orr had a monster game for the Eagles as he hit two doubles with a RBI and a run scored. He also picked up the win on the mound thanks to two and a third innings of one run pitching that saw him record six strikeouts out of seven possible outs. "It felt great to pick up the win," said Orr. "I have to give it up for my teammates for always being there for me and having my back." Connor Kelly and Whit Harrison each collected two hits and a RBI for the Wolverines Chesnee will be back in action on Friday night as they host Landrum with a 7:30 PM scheduled first pitch. |
