CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee softball team got a solid effort all around the field as they defeated Woodruff 9-3 on Wednesday night, as the Eagles bats got started with a big hit to jump start their impressive offensive night.
"I'm proud of them," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "I talked to them before the game about perspective and about how precious life is after learning that St Joseph's had a young lady lose her life last night. I reminded them how precious they are to us and to this community. They played for each other tonight. I'm very proud of them." Chesnee's Maddie Handy struck out the side in the top of the first inning to get the Eagles off to a solid start. "It got me in a groove and got my mind right," said Handy. "It gave me confidence to attack the plate." Kyleigh Thompson kept the momentum going as she hit a leadoff blast that clanged off the batting cages behind the outfield wall to put the Eagles up 1-0. "It felt great off the bat," said Thompson about the home run, her first of the season. "The best part was seeing how excited my teammates were as I reached home plate and it gave us momentum for the rest of the game." Handy said that Thompson's home run brought a focus to the team and brought an energy to the dugout. "Kyleigh's home run got our team focused and pumped up," said Handy. "It was a domino effect after that." Handy continued her solid work in the second inning with a pair of strikeouts. The Wolverines threatened in the top of the third inning as Bri Mock hit a leadoff single and Gabby Campos followed two batters later with a single of her own. Campos later stole second and put runners at second and third with just one out for the Wolverines. Handy ended the threat with a strikeout and a pop out to Jada Sellars. "I told the team after the game, just when I don't think she can get any tougher she proves me wrong," said Fogle about his junior pitcher. "She is just a tough competitor with great stuff. She is leading the team and they feed off of her energy. If there is a better pitcher in 2A I would love to see it." The Eagles took the momentum gained in the top of the third inning and cashed it in during the bottom half of the inning as they got back-to-back lead off singles from Hannah Henderson and Maddie Handy. Three batters later, Emma Fogle laced a two out, two RBI double to the outfield to put the Eagles up 3-0 over the Wolverines. Handy came back out with another shutdown inning in the fourth inning with another pair of strikeouts. Chesnee tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Aubrey Aparis, Kyleigh Thompson, and Hannah Henderson each hit a one out single to load the bases. Aparis later scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Maddie Handy while Thompson also scored on a throwing error during the play. Emily Pruett was hit by a pitch to start the fifth inning and after she worked her way to third base she later scored on a Harley Grady RBI groundout. Aubrey Aparis reached base for the third time in the bottom of the sixth inning and Kyleigh Thompson followed her with a single of her own. Hannah Henderson hit a RBI double to plate Aparis before Handy brought home Thompson with a RBI sacrifice fly. Henderson later came around to score on an Emily Pruett single to the outfield. The Wolverines tried to claw back into the game in the top of the seventh inning but it wouldn't be enough as with bases loaded the Wolverines got three runs on a double by Woodruff's Kaitlyn Jackson. With the game sitting at 9-3, the Eagles battery made sure they didn't get any closer as Hannah Henderson made an incredible diving catch from her catchers position while Handy struck out the next batter to end the game. Maddie Handy hurled a brilliant game as she struck out 14 Wolverine batters just one day after she threw a combined no hitter with Emily Pruett. "Any time we have Maddie in the circle it gives us so much confidence as a offense as we know she will take care of her part," said Kyleigh Thompson about Handy's pitching performance. Several Eagle hitters had big games as Kyleigh Thompson had three hits including her home run while also scoring three runs. Hannah Henderson had three hits as well including a RBI double while Maddie Handy helped her own cause going two for two with two RBIs. The Eagles will be back in action on Monday when travel to Blacksburg with a special spring break time of 1:00 PM. GREENVILLE, SC - Chesnee softball improved their record in region play to 3-0 after an impressive 18-0 road victory over St. Joseph's on Tuesday night.
Maddie Handy and Emily Pruett combined to pitch a no-hitter from the circle for the Eagles as they dominated the Knights hitters. Chesnee had several standout performers at the plate, as Handy and Pruitt were among that group as well. Handy went three of four with three RBIs while Pruett was two for two with a pair of walks. Jada Sellars and Harley Grady each had two hits apiece with Grady also coming away with a double. Emma Fogle had a triple and three RBIs for the Eagles while Katie Faith Watson also came away with a double of her own. The Eagles as a team had sixteen hits and were able to work six walks. The Eagles will be back in action when they host their rival Woodruff on Wednesday night at 6:00 PM in an out of region contest. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee baseball team opened their new renovated Dean Jones Stadium in impressive fashion as they defeated Blacksburg 8-1 to open region play on Thursday night.
"We are trying to do things the right way and play as a team," said senior Landon Thompson. Chesnee's Tucker Johnson kept Blacksburg off the scoreboard in the top of the first inning after a pair of two out base runners were able to reach base. After the top of the first inning, Johnson seemed to be on cruise control for the rest of the outing as he pitched five and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball. "I found the zone and got in a rhythm," said Johnson. "I had the support from my teammates behind me." Johnson, just a sophomore, only had three runners reach second base while striking out six including back-to-back batters in the fourth inning. "He is only a sophomore but he is gritty," said Chesnee head coach Scott Wease. "He has been good for us in every start this year and someone that makes us proud." The Eagle offense had Johnson's back early as they plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning. "That was really big for us," said Wease about his team's first inning performance. "It allowed our guys to swing the bats with confidence after having success early." Landon Thompson and Jonah Epps led off the game with back-to-back singles and Thompson scored on a Davis Rising's RBI double. Ethan Lawson drove in a run after lining out to the centerfielder before Carson Williamson delivered the final blow of the inning with a RBI single. The Eagles continued to tack on runs in the second inning as they plated five runs and sent eleven batters to the plate. Johnson helped his own cause with a leadoff double before later scoring on a Landon Thompson RBI single. Jonah Epps, Davis Rising, and Ethan Lawson also drove in runs for the Eagles while Tucker Johnson helped himself once again with a bases loaded walk. "They gave us insurance and had my back," said Johnson. "They did their thing which in turn allowed me to do mine." Jordan Fitch pitched the final inning and a third for the Eagles as he struck out three batters. Blacksburg scratched across a run in the seventh inning as Kolby Capps scored on a Chesnee error. Chesnee got an excellent performance from the top four in the batting order as Landon Thompson, Jonah Epps, Davis Rising, and Ethan Lawson went a combined 8 of 12 with two doubles while also scoring six runs along with six RBIs. "It's good to know we can pick each other up," said Thompson. "One of us can get on base and feel confident someone will drive them in." The two teams will be back in action on Friday in another pivotal Region II-AA game when Chesnee travels to Blacksburg with the first pitch scheduled for 7:30 PM. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee softball team used a big offensive inning and an excellent performance from the circle to defeat Blacksburg 4-1 on Tuesday night and improve to 2-0 in region play to start the season.
"I'm extremely proud of our girls,” said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. “We had a long weekend of competition and played a tough Landrum team last night. They came out and fought for this win tonight against a Blacksburg team that was ready to play." Chesnee’s Maddie Handy struck out the first batter she faced in the game and it started a theme of the night for the Eagle pitcher. The Eagles put pressure on the Wildcats in the top of the first inning after back-to-back singles by Skylar Barrett and Hannah Henderson but the Wildcats were able to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. Blacksburg got a leadoff single by Erica Morrison in the top of the second inning and later scored on Anna Tate's two-out RBI double to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. The run put the momentum squarely in the Wildcat dugout but it also sparked a performance by Handy that made sure her team had a chance. For the final 5.1 innings Handy only allowed one hit and only two base runners while neither runner ever reached second base. With Handy doing her job in the circle she needed her offense to have her back and they were able to come through for her in the fourth inning. Kyleigh Thompson laced a one out single to spark six consecutive batters to reach in the bottom of the fourth inning. Emily Pruett tied the game with a RBI single and one batter later senior Emma Fogle came through with one of the best hits of her career with a RBI double that proved to be the winning hit. "It feels awesome to come through for my team,” said Emma Fogle. “We have come together as a team this season. We have all went up to the plate with confidence this season and that's what I did tonight. It feels good to be off to a 2-0 start in region." Harley Grady bust the game open with a two RBI single to put the Eagles ahead 4-1 and it was a big day for Grady for another reason as she was also named to the Rebel Invitational All-Tournament Team after her performance this past weekend. "It felt really good to see the offense come in clutch tonight,” said Maddie Handy about the Chesnee offense backing up her pitching performance. Chesnee gave Handy all the offense she needed as she struck out five batters over the final three innings but Handy also got help from her defense. After the Eagles took the lead they needed a shut down inning and Handy got a stellar play from her centerfielder, Kyleigh Thompson, as she made an incredible diving catch in the top of the fifth inning to help the Eagles keep the momentum in their dugout. Handy finished with a terrific line as she surrendered four hits with only two runners reaching second base while striking out thirteen total batters, including striking out the side in the fourth and the sixth innings. "We have full confidence in Maddie Handy,” said Emma Fogle. “She does an amazing job in the circle. It feels nice to know we have an amazing pitcher we can rely on." "Tonight I really wanted to take care of my job for my team and give us a chance to win,” said Handy about her performance. The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday March 29th when they host St. Joseph's with a 5:30 PM first pitch. LANDRUM, SC - The Chesnee softball team went on the road to Landrum on Monday where they picked up a 10-4 victory over the Cardinals to open up Region II-2A play.
The Eagles got off to a quick start as they scored four runs in the top of the first inning as they were able to score all ten runs before the Cardinals scratched across their first runs of the game. Landrum scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning and tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Harley Grady led the Eagles with two RBIs while Kyleigh Thompson added three hits for Chesnee. Maddie Handy picked up the complete game win for the Eagles as she surrendered four runs while only one was earned and striking out nine Landrum batters. The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday as they will host another region matchup against Blacksburg with a 7:30 PM scheduled first pitch. CHESNEE, SC - The Chapman soccer team went on the road Wednesday night and came away with a 4-0 victory over the home standing Chesnee Eagles in a battle between the two longtime rivals.
Chapman got a trio of first half goals to build a 3-0 halftime lead as they got one goal each from Brandon Vallecillo, David Pinedo, and Lukas Schall. Schall added a second goal midway through the second half to help the Panthers build their lead to 4-0 over the Eagles. Both goalkeepers came away with pretty good games as Chapman's Daniel Johnson earned his first career clean sheet in goal while Chesnee's Caleb Rentz made several impressive saves, including a close-range free kick as well as a penalty kick. The Panthers will return to the pitch on Thursday when they travel to Powdersville as the game has a scheduled 7:00 PM kickoff. ”We are excited about winning the first two,” said Chesnee head softball coach Tripp Fogle. “We talked yesterday about just playing hard and smart and we did that." Chesnee got a pair of excellent pitching performances from Maddie Handy and Emily Pruett. Handy surrendered only one hit in the Eagles 4-2 win over the Woodruff Wolverines. She allowed two runs and struck out five in just over three innings of work before the time limit was reached. "It felt good to pick a win over a good Woodruff team," said Maddie Handy about picking up the first win of the season. Pruett also surrendered only one hit on the Eagles 9-0 win over the High Point Grizzlies. Pruett also had three strikeouts over three innings before the time limit was reached. "It's always good to get off to a strong start, but this was a complete team effort," said Emily Pruett when asked about her performance. In game one, Woodruff put Chesnee in a unique position after Kaitlyn Jackson drove in a run on a sacrifice ground ball as the Eagles batted in their park in the top of the second inning trailing 1-0. Jada Sellars quickly helped the Eagles respond as the eighth grader hit a triple in her first varsity at bat. She later scored to tie the game on Emily Pruett's RBI single. Skylar Barrett gave the Eagles the lead with a two out RBI double that plated Pruett. Woodruff's Julie Sinclair drew a one out walk in the bottom half of the inning and later scored on an error to tie the game at two. After the Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the third inning, Emily Pruett picked up her second RBI with a sacrifice groundout to give the Eagles the lead. Emma Fogle doubled the lead with a RBI single just one batter later. The Eagles’ bats got hotter as the day went on as evidenced by the 9-0 win over High Point that saw the Eagles score four runs in the top of the first inning. Kyleigh Thompson hit a RBI single to give the Eagles the lead and once again Jada Sellars had a big hit this time a two RBI single. Emma Fogle also continued her strong day with a RBI double. The Eagles tacked on a run in the top of the second when Aubrey Aparis drew a lead off walk and used her speed and a Skylar Barrett sacrifice to work herself to third base. Aparis later scored on a Hannah Henderson RBI Sac fly. Henderson picked up her second RBI after drawing a bases loaded walk in the top of the fourth and later scored when Maddie Handy hit a three RBI triple as the final batter of the game due to the time limit. Jada Sellars had a big night in her first varsity action as she went 3-5 with a triple and three RBIs. Emma Fogle had a strong start to her senior season going 2-4 with pair of RBIs and a double. In the night cap, High Point defeated Woodruff 6-2. A big first inning sparked by Kourtney Caraway's two RBI triple helped the Grizzlies pick up the win. Chesnee’s victory also had more significant meaning as it wasn’t just their first win of the season but it was also the first victory at Chesnee for new head soccer coach Joel Barrington in his first game in front of the home crowd.
