On Tuesday morning in front of a large crowd of family, friends, and faculty Chesnee’s Abbey Ray signed to continue her volleyball career at Converse University next season. Being a dual sport star with the Eagles Ray said that it was her love for volleyball that made her pick to continue that career at the collegiate level
"I knew when I started playing volleyball that it was something that I always wanted to do every single day," said Chesnee's Abbey Ray. "I remember telling my dad in my ninth grade year that I was setting my goal to play volleyball in college and I wasn't going to accept anything else." Ray said that the coaching at the college and closeness to home were two of her main reasons for choosing to continue her career at Converse. "The coach is very personable and relatable along with holding each member of the team to high standards," said Ray. "Also the school is only fifteen minutes away from home which is something good for me since I'm such a homebody. There are also a lot of local people on the team that will help my transition from high school to college a lot easier hopefully." Ray finished her volleyball career at Chesnee as a four year starter where she was named the player-of-the-year in the region the last two seasons along with being named All-State, All-Region, and All-Area. She accumulated 756 kills, 91 aces, 61 blocks, and 524 digs during her four years in the Eagles volleyball program. She also participated in the CAWS All-Star game this season. "I had the honor to coach Abbey in her junior and senior seasons that brought lots of success," said Chesnee head volleyball coach Katie Jolley. "She is an all around amazing girl and Converse is extremely lucky to get such a great all around student athlete." In basketball Abbey Ray was a four year starter and was named All-Region in all four seasons while also being named All-State in both her junior and senior seasons. She finished her Eagles basketball career with a career double-double with 1,029 career rebounds and ranks fourth all-time in the state of South Carolina for rebounds as she had thirty-four in a game against Brashier Middle College back in 2018., which is also the school record for Chesnee High School. "It has been an honor to coach Abbey at Chesnee and she has been such a huge asset to our program,," said Chesnee head basketball coach Carey Burns. "She is a great student athlete and a great person who always showed great leadership to our younger players. I know she will have nothing but success in all that she does in the future." Ray has not only excelled on the athletic courts but also is successful off of the court as she holds a 4.4 GPA as well as being named Chesnee's Homecoming Queen as well as winning the title of Ms. Palmetto that will now allow her to compete in the Ms. South Carolina pageant this summer. "I decided to do the pageant career about three days before it started because it was what my mom had always done," said Ray. "I went in with no intentions of winning but then I did and it struck me that I was going to be competing in the Ms. South Carolina pageant which I guess is the start of something new for me." |
