CHESNEE, S.C. – After game one of a home-and-home series was postponed due to rain last week, the Chapman Panthers and Chesnee Eagles softball teams faced off in a twin bill on Thursday evening. When the dust settled, both sides emerged with a victory as Chapman won game one 3-0, while Chesnee held on for a 6-5 win in game two.
GAME ONE – Chapman 3, Chesnee 0 Two of the first three Panther batters – Autumn Fisher and Sarah Byrd – reached on a base hit, while Reagan Garrett drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Fisher sprinted home on a wild pitch, while a Sophie Whitley single drove in Byrd. Garrett later touched home plate on a wild pitch. Garrett went the distance in the circle for the Panthers, limiting the Eagles to two hits and four total base runners while tallying five strikeouts. For Chapman, Whitley went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, while Chesnee’s Maddie Handy also threw a complete game and struck out six batters. “We came out ready to play,” said Chapman head coach Casey Green. “We haven’t really played any doubleheaders outside of tournament play, so it was different. Reagan was able to hit spots and change speeds. We need these pressure-like situations like tonight and to play close games because otherwise, they don't know how to act once they face that pressure." GAME TWO – Chesnee 6, Chapman 5 The second of the two-game set was a back and forth battle, as Aubrey Aparis reached on a bunt single and later scored on an error for a 1-0 Eagle lead midway through the opening frame. The Panthers responded with two runs in their first turn at bat as Rylan Ivey scored on a Garrett RBI double. Abby Gossett drove in Garrett moments later with a base hit for a 2-1 Chapman lead. Chesnee tied the game at two in the second as Emily Pruett scored on a Harley Grady RBI single, and then jumped ahead by two on a Pruett RBI single, which scored Jada Sellars and Maddie Handy. Pruett plated another run with another base knock, which made it a 6-2 Eagles advantage. Rylan Ivey singled and scored on an error, while Byrd doubled and scored on a Garrett sacrifice fly, which made it a two run contest entering the final stanza. Chapman plated one run on a Krislyn Wilder double, but the Eagles picked up a fielder’s choice groundout to secure the win. “We had some better at bats (in game two),” Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle stated. “We’ve emphasized base running more so than we have in the past, running hard and trying to take an extra base when we can. Chapman is a phenomenal program and Coach Green does a great job. That’s one of the better lineups we’ve seen. To be able to get a win against them is nice and a split (of the twin bill), we’re satisfied.” Chesnee (7-5) will play host to Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy on Friday, April 7th at 6 PM.
