Trent Greene led the Trojans with thirteen points while Tyler Wilson added eleven points of his own. On Saturday afternoon the Chesnee Lady Eagles played their first game in the new year and used a strong second half to capture a 38-32 victory over the Landrum Cardinals. "Our first half was pretty rough as I think we came out kind of slow but I think we really picked it up in the second half as we started to rebound and work it in to our post players," said Chesnee head coach Carey Burns. "In the second half we were able to get it to our post players and weren't just settling for shots." The Eagles held a 7-6 lead after the first quarter behind five points from senior Abbey Ray but Landrum was able to jump ahead in the second quarter with the help of a 10-2 run over the first four minutes of the quarter. The Cardinals used that run to claim a 20-13 lead over the Eagles when the halftime buzzer sounded. When the second half started the Eagles started slow but midway through the third quarter they picked up the pace as they finished the quarter on an 8-2 run to only trail Landrum 26-24 when the fourth quarter started. The post play was key during the third quarter run for the Eagles as both Ray and Jessa Beach each had four points a piece for the Eagles in the quarter. The Eagles continued their run into the fourth quarter as they made it a 13-5 run and tied the game at 29-29 when Beach hit two free throws with just over four minutes to go in the game. Landrum's Bailey Butler on the next possession hit a three pointer to retake the lead at 32-29 but two free throws from Ray soon cut the lead back to one. As the clock passed under the three minute mark the Eagles took their first lead since the end of the first quarter when Beach hit a bank shot from the left side to put Chesnee ahead 33-32. The Eagles had two separate occasions that saw them miss both free throws but thanks to great hustle plays by sophomore Brie Smith, who made both a steal and picked up a rebound off missed free throws, the Cardinals were unable to take advantage. "As a sophomore Brie has really came a long way in just a year for us," said Burns. "Her presence just brings a calmness to our team when she's on the floor that you don't normally get from a sophomore. In pressure situations like we were in tonight it's great to have a player like that on the floor." With just thirty seconds to go Ray was able to deliver two clutch free throws for the Eagles to put them up three and they were able to seal the victory on a steal and a breakaway layup from Kymiah Blair who was also fouled on the shot to grab the 38-32 victory. Chesnee was led on offense by Ray and Beach who each scored fourteen points on Saturday night . The victory was the first game for the Eagles in two weeks but they won't have to wait that long for their next matchup as they will host Chase (NC) on Monday night. Chesnee Rally Falls Short Against CardinalsIn a game that saw as many as five different lead changes in a minute of play came down to a late run that saw the Chesnee Eagles end up on the wrong side as Landrum came away with a 72-63 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Chesnee trailed Landrum 13-11 at the end of the first quarter but by the second minute of the second quarter the Eagles had a 15-13 lead thanks to a reverse layup by Usir Barnes and then a breakaway layup off a steal from Nyquille O'Fair. Soon after the Eagles grabbed the lead the Cardinals went on an 8-0 run to grab a 21-15 lead that was finally broken by a layup from Chesnee's Cole Hoskyns which started another Eagles run to put Landrum's halftime lead at 30-27. In the third quarter both teams had a piece of the lead at some point and the Eagles clawed back throughout the quarter to grab a 49-48 lead at the end of the quarter. The run in the third quarter was in large part thanks to the play of KJ Valentine and Matthew Lawter in the post who both combined to score six points a piece in the quarter. "I was proud of the effort of our kids as they really fought back from our early deficit," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "We were right there and had a chance the whole game. If we bring that fight to the rest of our schedule I think we can be a problem for some people." In the fourth quarter the Eagles had the lead 54-53 after a Brady Poole three pointer from the left side of the court and only trailed by one with just over four minutes to go in the game. Over the last four minutes of the game though the Eagles shots went cold and the Cardinals took advantage as they finished the game on a 13-5 run to capture the 72-63 victory. Both teams were led by youth on Saturday as Chesnee was led on offense by sophomore KJ Valentine who scored eighteen points and Landrum was led by sophomore Isaiah Washington who scored twenty-two points. Chesnee will return to action on Monday night as they host Chase High School (NC). |
