The Landrum Cardinals outscored the Chesnee Eagles 38-23 in the second half on the way to a 67-53 win. Turner Ussery made 5 out of 6 free throws to help ice the game for the Cardinals. Landrum also was able to shut down Chesnee's Dez Tate in the second half after he scored 15 points in the 1st half. Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt was disappointed with his teams play in the 2nd half. "When we hit a lull in the 4th quarter we got stagnant with the ball, after I thought we moved the ball well in the 1st half." Landrum was led by Junior guard Trey Smith who scored a game-high 23 points. Foster Bridges added 20 points for the Cardinals. Nate Lamb led the Eagles in scoring with 17 points. Ahmad Smith added 10 points for the Eagles. Dez Tate scored 15 points in the 1st half, but was held scoreless in the 2nd half. Coach Pitt was pleased with how his team has improved and had this to say about the upcoming game, "it does give me hope and the teams in front of us are upcoming key matchups and we are down to must-win time." The Eagles will be back in Tuesday night at Blacksburg. Girls GameLandrum used a big 1st half to down the Lady Eagles 80-34. The Cardinals outscored the Eagles 41-17 in the 1st half, and opened the game on a 12-2 run.
Landrum had a balanced scoring attack as 11 of their 13 players made a basket. The Cardinals were led by Lindsey Hardin, who scored a game-high 13 points. Sarah Price added 10 points for Landrum. Sierra Bowen lead the Eagles with 11 points and Carley Hammett added 6 points for the Eagles. Jessa Beach scored 5 points for the Eagles in her 2nd career start. Coach Burns was proud of the Freshman Beach and had this to say about her, "I was proud of how she played in her first time seeing significant time and her shots will fall she just has to keep shooting." On Tuesday night, the Chesnee Eagles got a big region win over the Christ Church Cavaliers by a final score of 62-57. The Eagles used a full court press at times to rattle the Cavaliers and had solid overall defense against a much taller Cavalier team. Dawson Williamson did an excellent job on Cavaliers star Rayshon Harrison and he added 10 points on the offensive end. Malik Busby and Terrence Duren held there own against a 6'11" and 6'6" Cavalier front line when Nate Lamb left the game at times with foul trouble. Coach Pitt was pleased with his team's defensive effort, "Dawson did an excellent job defensively. When Nate (Lamb) got into foul trouble, you had 5'8" Terrence and 6' Malik guarding a 6'11" guy down in the post and they did a phenomenal job." The Eagles offensively were able to get the Cavaliers into mismatches as Dez Tate finished with 21 points and Nate Lamb scored 19 points to lead the Eagles. Coach Pitt was happy with his team's ball movement and effort offensively, "We tried to take advantage of some mismatches, they switch alot in their man-to-man defense, and when they switched we tried to take advantage and get driving opportunities to the basket," Pitt said. The Cavaliers were led by Rayshon Harrison who finished with 17 points and Bennett Rogers who added 11 points. The Eagles will return to action on Friday when they host the #10 ranked team in 2A, the Landrum Cardinals. Girl’s GameChrist Church used a 30-0 run to start the game to down the Lady Eagles 67-26.
The Lady Eagles bounced back from a rough start and were able to adjust to the Lady Cavaliers full court press and were only outscored 37-26 the rest of the way after the Lady Cavaliers opening run. The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Abbey Ray who finished with 10 points and 6 blocked shots. Carley Hammett had a good game off the bench for the Lady Eagles as she had 8 points. Paige Scruggs and Shenan Bishop each finished with 4 points. Coach Carey Burns was proud of how her team continued to play after the rough 1st quarter "I'm proud of my girls for not giving up. I've been where they are at and it's hard sometimes to keep pushing." Burns said. The Lady Cavaliers were led by Paula Piper who finished with a game high 19 points. Marissa Powe and McCall King also had strong games for the Lady Cavs. Powe finished with 18 points and King finished with 14 points including 4 three pointers. St Joseph's closed the 3rd quarter on a 12-0 run and that was too much for the Eagles to come back from as the Knights captured a 64-48 victory. In a game that was tied 27-27 at halftime the Knights outscored the Eagles 22-5 in the third quarter. St. Joseph's defense forced the Eagles into a bad possession and St. Josephs was able use a transition offense to get the Eagles out position defensively in the second half. The started out fast as the Eagles led 21-17 at the end of the 3rd, but the Knights were able to hold the Eagles to jus 27 points the rest of the way. The Knights were led by Colin Burns who scored 13 points. Mike Murray added 12 points for the Knights and Walter Pace added 11 points. Chesnee got another solid game from Dez Tate who scored a team high 13 points. Ahmad Smith scored 8 points in his second game back from injury. Terrence Duren and Dawson Williamson each added 7 points for the Eagles. The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday at home against Christ Church. Girl’s GameSt. Josephs Lady Knights used a 18-7 fourth quarter run to down the Chesnee Lady Eagles 45-39 Friday night in a key region contest.
The Lady Eagles let a 35-29 lead, with 4:15 left in the game, slip away. Jaelle Saunders scored 8 of her 15 points in the fourth to help lead the Knights comeback. St Josephs also got a big night from Maddy Duwe who scored 10 points for the Lady Knights. The Lady Eagles got solid nights from team captains Abbey Ray and Sierra Bowen as Bowen scored a team high 15 points and was eight of ten from the charity stripe. Ray added twelve points down low for the Lady Eagles while Paige Scruggs added eight points for the Lady Eagles. -Andrew Eison The Chesnee Eagles downed the Greer Middle College Blazers 68-45 on Tuesday night. The Eagles used an 11-0 run in the first five minutes of the third quarter to go up 43-23 and never looked bad from there. Chesnee head basketball coach Andy Pitt was pleased with his team's start to the second half, "It was close in the first half and then in the second half we trapped with some zone defense instead of man to man," Pitt said. "That helped us force turnovers and tough shots.” Nate Lamb and Dez Tate once again had terrific games for the Eagles as Lamb scored 23 points and Tate had 18 points. Chesnee also got a big night from Malik Busby as he scored 10 points coming off the bench. Coach Pitt was pleased with Busby's play, "I've been waiting on that out of him, he's got it in him" Pitt said. "There is no doubt in my mind he can give us rebounds and points off the bench, it was just really good to see that out of him.” Sam Johns made three three-point field goals and lead the Blazers with 17 points while Lucas Wamsley added 9 points for the Blazers. The Eagles return to action this Friday night on the road at St Joseph's Catholic at 8 PM. The Lady Eagles once again got strong performances from freshmen Shenandoah Bishop and Paige Scruggs. Bishop finished with 12 points, just two shy of her career high she set last Friday against Blacksburg, and Scruggs finished with 10 points. Chesnee Coach Carey Burns was proud of her young freshmen "Bishop and Scruggs provided energy to our team and they ran the floor well and knocked down open shots.” The Eagles controlled the glass on Tuesday night as Abbey Ray finished with 21 rebounds and 6 points and Sierra Bowen finished with 16 rebounds and 7 points. The Eagles had an overall balanced performance as 7 of the 9 players to see time on Tuesday made a shot from the field. Kaia Cooper lead the Lady Blazers in scoring with 9 points while Alexa Kneese added 6 points and Courtney Garrett added 5 points for the Lady Blazers. The Blacksburg Wildcats downed the Chesnee Eagles 91-84 in double overtime on Friday night. Chesnee rallied twice to keep the game close late in regulation and in the first overtime period behind late baskets from Dez Tate and Nate Lamb had a chance to win the game but a late bucket by Blacksburg's Shaun Garrison in the first overtime period denied the Eagles a chance to close it out. The back and forth affair had 11 lead changes and 13 ties. Jackson Gore came up huge for the Wildcats in the second overtime period as he scored 11 of his 16 points. Gore hit a three-pointer early in the 2nd overtime to put the Wildcats up 79-76 and they never looked back.Brandon Gettys and Shaun Garrison each finished with 15 points for the Wildcats. Dez Tate had a monster game for the Eagles as the junior scored a game-high 37 points with 27 points coming after halftime. Nate Lamb also had a big night for the Eagles with 23 points and connected on 5 three pointers while Dawson Williamson finished with 10 points for the Eagles. Chesnee Head Coach Andy Pitt was disappointed in the outcome "You can't turn the ball over and miss layups and expect to win. It's tough because we had our chances and we let it slip away," Pitt said. "You can't question our effort, the kids battled and laid it on the line we just came up short in our execution" Girl’s GameThe Blacksburg Lady Wildcats outscored the Chesnee Lady Eagles 43-21 in the second half in route to a 63-40 win.
The Lady Wildcats were led by Kendera Amderson who scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half. Jada Ferguson and EB Foster also scored in double figures for the Lady Wildcats. The Lady Eagles were able to hang with the tenth ranked Lady Wildcats until depth became an issue against Blacksburg's smothering full court press. Chesnee coach Carey Burns was proud of her teams effort." I thought our girls played hard tonight. Late in the game their full court press started tiring us out and we just ran out of gas and turned the ball over too much." Shenandoah Bishop had a career high 14 points for the Lady Eagles. Coach Burns was proud of the young freshman '' I was proud of her effort and how she ran the floor" Burns said "She did an excellent job finishing around the basket and at the free throw line." Carley Hammett and Sierra Bowen each had 9 points for the Lady Eagles. The Landrum Cardinals downed the Chesnee Eagles by a score of 100-61 on Tuesday evening behind a pair of terrific performances from Foster Bridges and Trey Smith. Smith scored a game high 36 points and Bridges added another 30 points for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 26 point halftime lead behind Smith's 24 1st half points and never looked back. The high scoring Landrum shooting attack was just too much for the Eagles to handle defensively. The Eagles were lead by Nate Lamb who scored 21 points in the game while Dez Tate added 16 points for the Eagles. Jahmarie Phillips also had a solid game for the Eagles as he added 12 points. The Chesnee Eagles will be back in action on Friday night when the return home to host the Blacksburg Wildcats. Girl's Game The Chesnee Lady Eagles fell on the road Tuesday evening at Landrum 64-38 as the Lady Cardinals got a big night from Lindsey Hardin, who scored a game high 21 points. The Lady Cardinals jumped out to an 11 point lead after the first quarter behind Hardin's thirteen first quarter points and never looked back. The Lady Eagles struggled to get the ball inside to Abbey Ray as she was limited to 9 points and only made two shots from the field. Carley Hammett led the Lady Eagles with twelve points. Paige Scruggs had another solid night as the freshman scored nine points. |
