CHESNEE, S.C. – It was a wacky midweek showdown as Chapman and Chesnee faced off at Dean Jones Stadium in a matchup of long time rivals.
When the dust settled, it was a two-run single by Jonah Epps that propelled Chesnee to a wild 5-4 victory over Chapman in 10 innings. “I’m definitely proud of them,” Chesnee head coach Scott Wease said. “We had opportunities tonight to end it in seven (innings), but Chapman is a great team. It was a good high school baseball game. It always makes it a little better when you come out on the winning side of it.” Chapman fell behind 2-0 through three innings, but answered with two runs in the sixth. Johan Rodriguez drilled a double deep into left field, scoring a run. He later came in to score on a Chesnee error, tying the game at two. In the 10th inning, the Panthers took a 4-2 lead on a Gavin Humphries RBI bunt single and an Eagle error. In the bottom of the frame, Bryson Scruggs made it a one-run contest with a RBI single. Two batters later, Epps smacked a bases-loaded single into centerfield scoring two runs and giving Chesnee the win. “Baseball is a weird game,” Epps stated. “I was a bit aggressive early in the at-bat. When I had two strikes against me, I had to step out, get some adrenaline out, and reset my approach. I don’t think we ever lost hope… we stayed strong and competed. Something we pride ourselves on is just competing and keeping ourselves in the game.” These two teams will meet again on Friday night at Mabry Park. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 PM. The Chesnee baseball team used a strong offensive performance to defeat Blacksburg 14-4 to open up region play on Friday night.
"We will definitely enjoy this one tonight,” said Chesnee head coach Scott Wease. “While we’ll enjoy this win tonight we’re also gonna have to get back to work and prepare for another game with a very good Blacksburg team on Monday night at their place." Blacksburg plated the game's first run in the top of the first inning after Zac Painter worked a walk and used some smart base running to score on a Will Johnson sacrifice. Chesnee responded by plating three in the bottom half of the first inning which started with Michael Paslawski beating out a bunt down the third base line. After back-to-back hit by pitches to load the bases the Eagles got back-to-back RBI singles from Cole Hoskyns and Jonah Epps to go ahead 2-0. Ethan Lawson drove in the final run of the inning after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. "I just wanted to do whatever I needed to do to get on,” said Paslawski about his leadoff bunt. “I had faith in my teammates behind me.” The Eagles got a shutdown inning out of Cole Hoskyns on the mound in the top of the second allowing their offense to get back to work. Hoskyns' battery mate Ethan Lawson drove in his second consecutive run on his second straight bases loaded hit by pitch in the bottom half of the inning to increase the Eagles lead to 4-1. Blacksburg's Zac Painter worked a one out walk in the top of the third inning but was caught stealing on a great throw from Ethan Lawson. The throw proved to be a big play as it prevented a Wildcat run after Bryson Davis drove the next pitch to deep centerfield for a double. Hoskyns retired the next Wildcats batter to end the inning. Chesnee sent thirteen batters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning as they scored nine runs in the inning. The big blows came from two RBI singles off the bats of Jonah Epps and Michael Paslawski. Paslawski added another RBI in the inning while Luke Hollifield and Landon Thompson also had RBI singles in the inning. The Wildcats got a run back on a solo shot off the bat of Levi Barrett in the top of the fourth inning and they also got another big hit in the top of the fifth inning to extend the game as Will Johnson hit a two RBI single to make the score 13-4. Chesnee ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Camden Burns reached base on a one out single before scoring on a Luke Hollifield RBI double to the left field wall to plate the game ending run. The Eagles recorded thirteen hits, worked a pair of walks, and were hit by six pitches as they worked their way to thirteen runs. Jonah Epps and Michael Paslawski each drove in three runs to spark the Eagles offense. Cole Hoskyns allowed two runs in his four innings of work while only surrounding three hits as he picked up the win for the Eagles. Chesnee will travel to Blacksburg on Monday in the second game of the home and home region series. Chesnee softball excelled in all area of the game as they opened region play with a 19-0 win over Brashier Middle College on Tuesday night.
"Everybody had the opportunity to contribute to this win and as a coach that's what you want every time," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "I'm very proud of them." Sam Carver got the game started in impressive fashion for the Eagles as she struck out the first three batters that she faced on Tuesday. She continued that performance through the first three innings of play for the Eagles as she struck out all nine batters she faced on Tuesday. Ali Scruggs picked up the first hit of the game for the Eagles with a one out single before twin sister Paige Scruggs followed with a two run blast over the left field fence to continue her hot hitting and give Chesnee a 2-0 lead. Maddie Handy followed Scruggs with a triple before Shenandoah Bishop drove her home with a RBI double to put the Eagles up 3-0 after one inning of play. The Eagles exploded for eleven runs in the bottom of the second inning as Emma Fogle got the inning started with a hit by pitch before stealing a pair of bases. Fogle was followed by a walk from Mattie Martin and both players came around to score on a two RBI double from Ali Scruggs before Sam Carver followed Scruggs with a RBI single of her own to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead. Paige Scruggs reached base after being hit by a pitch and was followed by Maddie Handy who came away with a two run double. Shenandoah Bishop and Emily Pruett followed with back-to-back singles with Bishop picking up a RBI. With the Eagles batting around the lineup in the second inning Emma Fogle returned to the plate for the second time in the inning picking up a RBI double before later scoring on a Eva Vaca two run triple. Mattie Martin drove in Vaca with a sac fly while Ali Scruggs followed with a triple and later scored on a double by Sam Carver. Maddie Handy and Callie Burns started the bottom of the third inning with a pair of singles before Kyleigh Thompson drove in a run with a single of her own to put the Eagles up 15-0. Skylar Barrett and Hannah Henderson followed with back-to-back RBI singles. Ali Scruggs followed Henderson with run scoring double before Sam Carver and Paige Scruggs continued the singles parade with back-to-back RBI singles of their own. Ali Scruggs came on in relief of Carver but continued the pitching dominance by striking out the first batter she faced and then getting the Bengals to line into a double play to end the game. Chesnee allowed only two base runners on Tuesday night with one reaching on a hit and another on a walk. "Sam and Ali were sharp tonight," said Fogle. "It's nice to see their hard work payoff. I hope we can continue to build off the success we had tonight when we play again Thursday." The Eagles sent thirteen batters to the plate with each batter reaching base and also scoring a run. "I'm glad I could pitch well for my team and it feels good to put together a good team win," said Chesnee's Sam Carver. "We didn't perform the way we wanted to this past weekend and we came in with a mindset to not let that happen again." Ali Scruggs went four for four with two doubles and a triple on Tuesday night to go along with three RBIs and four runs scored. Paige Scruggs also finished the night going two of three with a home run along with three RBIs and two runs scored. Chesnee will travel to Brashier Middle College on Thursday in a rematch of Tuesday night's game. The first pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 5:30 PM. With rain coming down on Wednesday afternoon the Chesnee golf team hosted a matchup at Meadowbrook that saw St. Joseph's capture the victory over both Gaffney and the Eagles with a score of 153.
While the Eagles didn't come away with the victory on Tuesday they continued to improve on their individual and team scores in less than ideal conditions, which Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt says is an encouraging sign from his young team. "We had some tough conditions out there today and I was proud of how the guys battled through that," said Pitt. "Peyton had a solid round and all of the guys had their moments today. We're just searching for a little more consistency out of all them but I'm encouraged because our team score just continues to improve." Chesnee shot a team score of 176 on Wednesday, which was four shots less than just two days earlier. They were led on Wednesday by Peyton Lawter who shot a team low score of 39 followed closely by Creighton Rentz with a score of 42 and Jake Hefner with a score of 45. St. Joseph's Henry Hall won medalist honors with a score of 36 on Wednesday. "We will focus on the areas we need to improve in and look to keep moving forward," said Pitt. "It's an exciting time in our program and the kids are hungry to get better." Chesnee will return to the course on Tuesday when they host both Brashier Middle College and Greer Middle College at Meadowbrook at 4:00 PM. The Chesnee baseball team downed Woodruff 14-6 in a season opening matchup of county rivals that turned into a three hour marathon.
"It's great to start off in the win column,” said Chesnee head coach Scott Wease. “I'm proud of the guys. It wasn't the prettiest of wins but a win is a win." Chesnee struck first in the top of the first inning as Michael Paslawski drew a leadoff walk and stole second before later scoring on Landon Thompson's deep RBI double to put Chesnee up 1-0. The Wolverines bounced back to load the bases in the bottom of the first but Chesnee pitcher Cole Davis induced a ground ball to start a 6-4-3 double play to escape the jam. The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the top of the second inning as the Woodruff outfield misplayed a Landon Thompson fly ball to score both Carson Williamson and Michael Paslawski. Woodruff cut into the lead with a one out RBI from Nehemiah Cochran to make the Eagles lead 3-1. Paslawski walked for the third consecutive plate appearance in the top of the fourth and later scored his third consecutive run on a wild pitch to push the Eagles lead to 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Chesnee added four more runs in the top of the fifth as Jonah Epps got the inning started with a double and later stole third base. Davis Rising followed Epps with a walk before adding a stolen base of his own swiping second base. The nifty base running allowed the Eagles to plate a run on a Cam Burns sacrifice and Carson Williamson followed with a sharp two RBI single to make the score 7-0 in favor of the Eagles. Williamson later scored on a Landon Thompson RBI sacrifice fly of his own to push the lead to 8-0. Woodruff answered back with four runs of their own as Zach Aylor, Colin Watson, and Stetson Schubach each picked up a RBI while Woodruff plated another run on a Chesnee error. The Eagles drew three consecutive walks sandwiched between two strikeouts to open the top of the sixth inning. Carson Williamson drove in the first run of the inning with a RBI single which was followed by Michael Paslawski and Bryson Scruggs each picking up a two RBI single while Chesnee added another run on a fielding error by the Wolverines. Nehemiah Cochran added another RBI for the Wolverines in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 14-6 in favor of Chesnee and that did it for the scoring on Monday night. Michael Paslawski had a big night at the plate for the Eagles as he reached base in all five plate appearances scoring four runs, stealing four bases and adding four RBIs. Chesnee will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Greer with a 6:30 PM scheduled first pitch. On Monday afternoon in a match at Meadowbrook Golf Course the Chesnee golf team had a good outing but fell short of the visiting Chapman team 163-180, as the Panthers improved to 2-0 on the season and the Eagles fell to 1-1.
"I was very pleased with the improvement we have shown since Thursday," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "We still have room for improvement. If we can clean a few things up with each guy and get those scores a little lower I really like the direction that we are heading." Chapman's Ethan Holcombe won medalist honors after shooting a score of 35 on Monday afternoon. Holcombe led a Panthers team that also included Mason Ritz shooting a score of 40 and Hudson Edmonds shooting a score of 41. The Eagles were led by Creighton Rentz who shot a team low score of 41 followed by Peyton Lawter with a 44 and Jackson Ramsey with a score of 47. Chesnee will next take to the course on Wednesday when they host St. Joseph's and Gaffney at Meadowbrook. Chesnee softball fell to Byrnes 2-1 on Friday night in the championship game of the Byrnes Preseason softball tournament.
"I'm proud of our effort,” said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. “We left some runs out there. All three of our pitchers did great but we just made some mistakes defensively. I told them after the game that I was proud we didn't let those mistakes define us.” The Eagles finished the tournament with a 2-1 record with wins over Clover and defending AAA Upper State champions Union County. Both starting pitchers got off to a hot start as Byrnes' Hailee Whitesides and Chesnee's Paige Scruggs both breezed through the first inning. Maddie Handy and Shenandoah Bishop each drew one out walks for the Eagles in the top of the second inning but were stranded at second and third base when the inning came to an end. After Molly Mattas led off the inning with a double and McKinna Taylor followed with a single as Byrnes scored the game's first run of the game as Haylee Hart, who was running for Mattas, scored on a Chesnee error. Scrugg's two innings of work came to an end when Sam Carver took over in the circle in the bottom half of the third inning. Carver got two great defensive plays in the inning as the first was sparked by Carver's own great grab on a liner back to the circle followed by her doubling up a runner off first. Hannah Henderson made the second great play as she made a strong throw to cutdown a potential Rebels base stealer. Chesnee loaded the bases in the top of the fourth as Paige Scruggs and Shenandoah Bishop each singled which was followed by a walk from Emily Pruett but a groundout allowed the Rebels to escape unscathed. Carver allowed two base runners in the bottom of the fourth but just like the Eagles earlier the Rebels couldn't capitalize. After a two out single in the bottom of the fifth by Ansley Fowler the Rebels added a second run on a Haylee Whitesides RBI double to the left field fence. Paige Scruggs reached base for the second time to leadoff the top of the sixth, this time she earned first base after being grazed by a Whitesides pitch. She later came around to score on an Emily Pruett RBI single to cut the Byrnes lead in half at 2-1. Maddie Handy pitched a perfect frame in the sixth inning for the Eagles while Whitesides done the same for the Rebels in the top of the seventh to finish off the win. Haylee Whitesides finished with a complete game allowing only one run and three hits. "Whitesides had a lot to do with our issues at the plate,” said Fogle. “She is the best pitcher we have faced and may be the best pitcher we face all year." The Eagles trio of pitchers combined to surrender only two runs on five hits. Chesnee will return to action on Tuesday night as they start off region play at Blacksburg with a 7:00pm scheduled first pitch. Chesnee competed in their first home matchup at Meadowbrook on Thursday and made it a successful one with a victory over Broome to start their regular season.
"It was nice to get our first win today," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "We are learning everyday and aiming to continually improve. You can see where these guys are heading and it's exciting. Chesnee outscored Broome on Thursday with a score of 198 to 214 as the Eagles Creighton Rentz won medalist honors shooting a 44 to lead all golfers. Peyton Lawter was second for the Eagles with a score of 49 followed by Jackson Ramsey with a score of 52. "The guys are not happy where they are and that's what is so exciting," said Pitt. "They want to work harder to get better." Chesnee will return to the course on Monday afternoon when they host Chapman at Meadowbrook. The Chesnee softball team downed the defending AAA Upper State champions, Union County, in a road matchup by a score of 6-3 in eight innings in their second game of the Byrnes Preseason Tournament.
"I'm proud of our resilience after Union tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "They stayed focused on the next pitch and got the job done in the top of the eighth inning." Chesnee used a pitching gem from Sam Carver along with big hits from Ali Scruggs and Hannah Henderson to help secure the win on Monday night. Ali Scruggs got the scoring started in the top of the first with a solo home run to put the Eagles up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Hannah Henderson doubled the Chesnee lead with a RBI single to drive in Maddie Handy in the top of the 3rd inning. The Scruggs homer proved pivotal as the Yellow Jackets tied the game with a two run home run by Kalli Petty in the bottom of the seventh before Sam Carver slammed the door shut on a potential Yellow Jacket win as she struck out the next three batters to send the game into extra innings. Carver added to her excellent performance on Monday when she singled to start the Eagles rally in the top of the eighth inning.. Paige Scruggs followed Carver with a double before Maddie Handy plated both Scruggs and Carver with her own double. Hannah Henderson drove in Handy with another double for her second RBI of the game to cap the three run inning. Carver added to her strikeout counter in the bottom half of the inning as she struck out two more Union County batters in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win for the Eagles. The Chesnee Eagles used an explosive first inning to down the Clover Blue Eagles 14-2 in five innings in the opening game of the Byrnes Preseason Tournament on Friday night.
"I'm proud of how these girls came back in the first inning," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "They didn't panic. Even though we made some mistakes they didn't let the mistakes define us. I'm real proud of the toughness they displayed." Clover opened the scoring in the top of the first as they got three consecutive two out hits that started when Abbie Welborn hit a double that was followed with a RBI double from Cheyenne Scott while Emily Vodeki capped things off with a RBI single to give the Blue Eagles a 2-0 lead. The Eagle bats answered with authority in the bottom of the first inning as Mattie Martin got things started when she turned an 0-2 count into a walk and Ali Scruggs followed with a single that saw both runners advance an extra base due to an error. Sam Carver lined a double for the first of her two big hits in the inning to drive in both runs to tie the game at 2-2 before Maddie Handy picked up an RBI single to give the Eagles the lead. Chesnee tacked on three more runs due to errors and crafty base running by Paige Scruggs, Maddie Handy, and Shenandoah Bishop including a great play by Bishop that saw her steal home on a double steal. The big blows in the inning came after the Eagles had batted around when Sam Carver laced her second two RBI hit of the inning and Paige Scruggs followed with a massive three run home run over the left-centerfield fence to push the lead to 11-2. Clover did have a highlight in the inning defensively as catcher Cheyenne Scott made a beautiful diving catch that ended the inning. "She (the pitcher) was down 3-0 and I knew a good pitch was coming," said Scruggs about her home. "I just kept my hands back and tried to score some runs." Handy delivered a shutdown inning for the Eagles from the circle in the top of the second inning as Adah Bruning's two out double was the lone blemish in the inning. Chesnee got another leadoff walk to start the bottom of the second inning as Shenandoah Bishop worked a walk before Emily Pretty followed two batters later with a double and she was followed by Kyleigh Thompson who singled to drive in Bishop.
