CHESNEE, SC - The Landrum Cardinals downed the Chesnee Eagles 68-55 in a matchup of region and county rivals on Friday night.
The Eagles got off to a hot start as Noah Mvula sank three three-pointers in the first quarter to spark the Eagles to a 18-11 lead after the first quarter. A Carson Williamson three-pointer stretched the Eagles lead to twelve points but the Cardinals responded with an 18-2 run that saw Franklin Davis and Benett Edwards account for all 18 points in the quarter. The run allowed the Cardinals to take a 33-29 lead into the locker room. Davis and Edwards accounted for all the Cardinals first half points as Davis scored 17 points and Edwards added 16 points of his own. Cardinals stretched the lead to eight after three quarters thanks to eight points from Marco Gonzalez. The Cardinals were able to maintain their lead thanks to seven fourth quarter points from Colby Walker. Franklin Davis led the Cardinals with 29 points on Friday night while Benett Edwards added 18 points himself. Noah Mvula led the Eagles with 14 points. The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday night on the road at Greer Middle College as the girls game is scheduled for a 6:00pm tipoff with the boys to follow. GIRLS GAME The Landrum Lady Cardinals downed the Chesnee Lady Eagles 57-16. The Cardinals used a 24-1 first quarter sparked by eleven points from Savannah Brown. The early lead proved too much for the Eagles to overcome. The Cardinals were led by Kaylee Cortez who finished with fifteen points. Savannah Brown added thirteen points and Kylie Fortner added eleven. Pearl Holloway led the Eagles with four points. Bixley Koon, Aubrey Aparis, Perrin Wood, and Haley Edmonds each finished with three points. LIBERTY, SC - The Chesnee boys' basketball team went on the road Tuesday night to Liberty and came back with their first region win of the season defeating the Red Devils 73-45.
The Eagles used some strong shooting along with a mixture of tough defense to get the game in their favor early and by halftime the game was all but decided. "We brought energy early and fed off that energy the rest of the game," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "We were able to use our defense to convert in transition early which was a key in our win tonight. We want to build from the momentum from tonight's win moving forward." Chesnee jumped out to an early 21-4 lead behind a strong first quarter performance from Kaylob Blanton who scored six of the Eagles' points in the quarter and a tenacious defensive effort that held the Red Devils to only four points. The Eagles continued their strong play in the second quarter outscoring the Red Devils 20-10 in the quarter on their way to a 41-14 halftime lead. Braylon Blanton (7) and Hayden Barnett (6) combined to score 13 of the Eagles' 20 points in the quarter. The third quarter saw the two teams play to a tie as they both score 22 points in the quarter as the Eagles were led by Carson Williamson (8) and Daniel Wease (6) who combined for 14 of the Eagles points in the third quarter. Jordan Burdette led Liberty in the third quarter scoring 12 of their 22 points. Chesnee once again outscored the Red Devils in the fourth quarter 10-9 to help seal an important region victory for the Eagles. Carson Williamson led the Eagles with 11 points as he was the only Chesnee player to finish the game with double digit points. The scoring was so spread out for the Eagles that nine of the eleven players on the roster scored at least one basket on Tuesday night, with the lowest of those having six points. Jordan Burdette led Liberty and all scorers with 15 points on Tuesday night. In the girls' game prior to the boys' game, the Chesnee Lady Eagles lost a tough road contest to the Red Devils falling 31-27 on Tuesday night. Both Eagles teams will return to the road on Friday night as they travel to Greenville Tech Charter for their final region matchup before making the second trip through region play starting next week. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee girls basketball program picked up a key region win over the Greer Middle College Blazers with a 41-35 victory on Friday evening.
"It feels really good to pick up this win," said Chesnee's Pearl Holloway. "It gives us momentum going into our game on Tuesday." The Eagles opened the game on a 9-0 run sparked by five points from Carlee Turner as they led 16-3 after the first quarter while Bixley Koon also added five points in the quarter for the Eagles. "Every team wants to start off strong and that was our goal tonight," said Holloway. "It gave us momentum from the very beginning." The Eagles built a 25-9 halftime lead behind a strong performance from Pearl Holloway, who scored nine of her thirteen points in the half. Chesnee used strong post defense in the first half to keep the Blazers from having much offensive success. "We made sure to play sound fundamental defense as a team," said Chesnee's Jayla Dunn. "We boxed out and kept our position on defense." The Blazers came out of the locker room strong as they opened the half on a 9-0 run, sparked by seven points from Kinsley Shirley, as they pulled to within six after three quarters of play. That was as close as the Blazers would get to pulling off the comeback as a back and forth fourth quarter stalled the comeback. The Eagles had a big advantage on the glass sparked by fifteen rebounds from Jayla Dunn. "Our coaches have really worked hard on improving our rebounding and it paid off tonight," said Dunn when asked what led to her big night on the boards. Pearl Holloway led the Eagles with 17 points while Bixley Koon added 10 points of her own. Leah Turner led the Blazers with 13 points. The Eagles will return to action in another key region matchup on Tuesday as they travel to Liberty with the girls' game set for a 6:00 PM start which will be followed by the boys' game. BOYS GAME - GREER MIDDLE COLLEGE 62 CHESNEE 48 The Greer Middle College Blazers downed the Chesnee Eagles 62-48 in a Region I-AA matchup. The Blazers closed the first quarter on a 8-3 run to build a 18-13 lead. After the Eagles tied the game at twenty-three on a KJ Proctor basket with just under four minutes to go in the half, the Blazers ended the half on 7-2 run to build a five-point halftime lead. The Eagles tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter and with just under three minutes to go in the quarter Kaylob Blanton pulled the Eagles to within one point. Unfortunately for the Eagles, an old fashion three-point play by Jack Pfister sparked the Blazers to a 7-1 run to end the quarter to a seven-point lead. The Blazers iced the game in the beginning of the fourth thanks to a 15-1 run to build a twenty-two-point lead that proved too much for the Eagles to overcome. Jack Pfister led the Blazers with 28 points and Davis Puckett added 10 points of his own. Kaylob Blanton and KJ Proctor led the Eagles with 11 points each. CHESNEE, SC - Blacksburg and Chesnee both opened region play on Friday night but when the night was over it was the Wildcats that had come away with two road victories to get a leg up in the region race.
In the boy's game the Wildcats used key runs to end the second and third quarters to pull out a 70-59 win. Blacksburg jumped out to a 7-3 lead early on thanks to four points from Wesley Bright but the Eagles ended the quarter on a 6-3 run of their own to pull within three points at the end of the first quarter. Chesnee took the lead with just four minutes to go in the half on a Carson Williamson three pointer. The Wildcats reclaimed the lead on a Samuel McSwain old fashion three-point play with 1:46 to go in the half and ended the half on a 13-4 run to build an eight-point half time lead. Blacksburg ended the third quarter in a similar way as they did the first half, going on a 7-0 run, after the Eagles had trimmed the lead to just one point, to take a 55-47 lead into the fourth quarter. The Eagles pulled to within seven points several times in the quarter but was unable to mount a rally big enough to overcome the Wildcat lead. Chesnee's Noah Mvula led all scorers with 19 points and Dawson Pruitt added 14 points of his own to lead the Eagles. Samuel McSwain led the Wildcats with 17 points while Jacob Gilfillan added 13 more points for Blacksburg on Friday night. The Eagles will travel to Landrum on Tuesday night in another big Region I-2A matchup with the girl's game scheduled for 6:00pm and boys' game to follow. GIRLS GAME The Blacksburg Lady Wildcats used a big third quarter to down the Chesnee Lady Eagles 52-27 on Friday night. Blacksburg opened the game on a 7-2 run but a 5-2 run by the Eagles to close out the quarter cut the lead to 9-7 when the buzzer sounded. The Eagles took the lead early in the second quarter thanks to a Carlee Turner three-pointer, but the Wildcats retook the lead with a Kalynn Littlejohn three-pointer. Blacksburg ended the half on a 7-1 run to build a 27-18 lead. A 16-2 third quarter was the difference maker in the game as it helped seal the game for the Wildcats as Paris Mayes led the Wildcats with seven points in the quarter. The Eagles mounted a small run in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to get the Eagles within striking distance of the Wildcats. Kalynn Littlejohn and Annabella Foster led the Wildcats with 12 points apiece. Pearl Holloway led the Eagles with seven points while Haley Edmunds added six points. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee Lady Eagles opened the new year of 2023 with a win as they downed their rivals from across the border, the Chase Lady Trojans 44-28 on Monday night.
"I feel like we finally clicked tonight," said Chesnee player Pearl Holloway. "The team is starting to build great chemistry and this win gives us a lot of confidence heading into region play." The Eagles came out with a lockdown defense as they limited the Trojans to one point in the first quarter. "The defensive effort early on allowed us to build confidence on the offensive end," said Haley Edmunds. The Eagles opened the game on an 11-3 run and that allowed the Eagles to build a 13-10 halftime lead. Chesnee came out of the halftime locker room strong as they scored 17 points in the third quarter, including a 9-2 run to open the quarter, as Olivia Tolleson sparked the run with five points. The Eagles also ended the quarter on a 6-2 run. The runs in the second half continued for the Eagles to open the fourth quarter as they went on a game deciding 14-0 run. Four three pointers keyed the run with two coming from Carlee Turner. "When we hit our shots it gives us confidence that benefits on both ends of the floor," said Holloway when asked how the Eagles six three pointers helped sparked the team. The Eagles had a balanced scoring effort from the team as they had four players finish with nine or more points. Carlee Turner led the way with 11 points while Olivia Tolleson added 10 points. Pearl Holloway and Haley Edmunds each added nine points of their own. "When we are all working and doing our jobs it leads to opportunities for everyone which helps with our confidence and team chemistry" Edmunds said. Morgan McDaniel and Kinsley King led the Trojans with eight points each. Chesner will return to action on Friday as they open region play against the Blacksburg Wildcats with the lady's game scheduled to tip off at 6:00pm and the men's game will follow. BOYS GAME C.H.A.S.E 60 CHESNEE 43 The Chase Trojans downed the Chesnee Eagles 60-43 in the opening game of 2023 for both teams. The Trojans led 15-14 after the first quarter of play thanks to ten points by Landon Barnes including six of the seven points of an 8-0 Trojan run that turned an 11-7 deficit into a 15-11 lead. Daniel Wease led the Eagles with five points in the quarter. The back-and-forth action continued in the second quarter as a 15-14 game after the first quarter turned into a 25-23 game at halftime as Addison Archer scored five of the Trojans ten points and Braylon Blanton scored four of the Eagles nine points. The Trojans pulled away in the third quarter as they outscored the Eagles 24-4. Addison Archer built off his strong second quarter as he scored the first nine points for the Trojans to help spark the big quarter. The Eagles tried to claw back in the fourth quarter thanks to six points by Terrell Kessler, but the Trojan's strong third quarter proved too tough to overcome. Landon Barnes led the Trojans with 24 points while Addison Archer added 20 points of his own. Elijah Wease led the Eagles with 11 points while Dawson Pruitt added another 10 points of his own. |
