Chapman used a big offensive first quarter to help down the Chesnee Eagles 48-20 in the final regular season game for both teams.
Chapman opened up the scoring early in the first quarter on their second play from scrimmage with a ten yard touchdown run by Brandon Jones, his first of two touchdowns on the night. On the next Chapman drive, Mikele Colasurdo recorded his first of three touchdowns on the night as he hit Noah Twitty for a ten yard touchdown pass. Colasurdo would add a fifteen yard touchdown run and another touchdown pass to Twitty from forty-two yards out as all of Colasurdo's touchdowns came in the first quarter. Thomas Grigg returned a blocked punt thirty-two yards for another Panthers touchdown to close out the first quarter scoring. Chapman opened the second quarter scoring as Drew Settle hit Carlos Parks for a thirty yard strike after a nice play by Parks. Chesnee got on the board with a one yard Jacob Kimbrell run setup by another Kimbrell run that converted a fourth down deep in Chapman territory. Kimbrell had a nice game running the ball as he finished with eighty-eight yards rushing on fifteen carries and has continued to improve throughout the season running the ball something that Chesnee Head Coach Bill Owens has been proud of. "it is something we have tried to add throughout the season so people don't just key on our running back,” said Coach Owens. “He has adapted well to it and our coaching staff has done a good job of preparing him." Chesnee would get back on the board with a thirteen yard pass from Kimbrell to Matthew Lawter as Lawter also had a nice night finishing with four catches for thirty-two yards and a touchdown. Chapman scored on their first drive of the second half as Brandon Jones scored on a one yard touchdown run. Chesnee's Rodney Alexander would score the final touchdown of the game with a six yard run late in the fourth quarter. Two bright spots defensively for the Eagles were Colby Davis and Camden Burns as Davis recorded his first varsity sack on Thursday night and Burns forced Chapman's lone turnover as he intercepted a Chapman pass for his first career interception. Burns has been a bright spot for the Eagle defense this season after transitioning to linebacker from quarterback just before the season started and Coach Owens is proud of the season Burns is having. "Everybody on this team has a role, and Camden Burns does a good job. He has started every game for us defensively, and played every snap tonight." Owens said. The Eagles battle hard all night, and Coach Owens was pleased to see his team's effort continue to be strong all night. "We fought hard all night long, there is a reason that Chapman is as good as they are.” The Eagles will travel to Union County in two weeks to open the 3A playoffs. Chesnee swept Union County three sets to none to advance in the 3A volleyball playoffs. Chesnee jumped out to 8-2 lead early in the first set and used the early lead to propel their way to a 25-11 win in game one.
Union County jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the second set but the Lady Eagles were able to come back and tie the game at eight. Chesnee then used a 14-4 run to close out game two 25-19. In game three Chesnee jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the and went on to win the set 25-17 and claim the match 3-0. Abbey Ray had a big game for the Lady Eagles with twelve kills and nine digs. Abby Fisher continued her consistent play with thirty-three assists and eight digs while AC Yelton had fourteen kills and Shelby Harris had fourteen digs. Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley was pleased with her team's ability to maintain control throughout the game. "It was great. That is what I was looking for from the leadership on the court. They know what their goal is, and they are hard to attain in the playoffs." Jolley said. Chesnee had several young players come up for tonight's game including Brie Smith, Jessa Beech, Hannah Henderson, and Holly Hines. Coach Jolley was pleased to get the young players some playoff experience. “My goal tonight was to get them in at some point,” said Coach Jolley. “I want them to experience this because most of the players on the team this year don't have playoff experience. It will hopefully make it easier for them next year." Chesnee will play the winner of Fairfield Central at Powdersville on Monday in the second round The Chesnee Eagles used a huge first quarter to down the Carolina Trojans 54-26 for the Eagles first region win of the season. The win also puts the Eagles in line for a playoff spot.
Chesnee Head Coach Bill Owens was proud of his team after the win, "The important thing was to win this game to make the playoffs, because anything can happen once you make it. These guys did a good job of sticking together. I can't tell you how good it is to see these kids smile after a game again." Senior Captain Malik Busby was proud of his teams win and his role as a senior leader, "This win means a lot to me. I love to help other people get better. After we (the seniors) leave I want Chesnee to keep improving, so my job is to get the younger players ready for when we aren't here anymore.” Chesnee got the scoring started early in the 1st quarter as Dez Tate picked off a Austin Neese pass and returned it 41 yards for a Chesnee touchdown. Chesnee would follow that with a 6 yard touchdown run by Jacob Kimbrell on Chesnee's first offensive drive of the game. Kimbrell would later connect with Dez Tate for a 19 yard touchdown pass, the first of four touchdown passes for Kimbrell. Chesnee would finish the quarter with back to back touchdowns catches by Alijah Means. Means had a big game for the Eagles as the Sophomore collect his first three touchdown catches at the varsity level and finished with 7 catches for a 113 yards. Coach Owens was proud of Means and the other young players who found success for the Eagles. “Alijah is one of a bunch of young kids that played really well for us. He has got a lot of ability, and I was glad to see us be able to get the ball to him and all of our skill guys" Owens said. Josh Russell would open the 2nd quarter scoring for the Eagles as he rumbled in from 19 yards out to give the Eagles a 40-6 lead. Later in the quarter Kimbrell would hookup with Means once again this time for a 44 yard touchdown pass The Eagles did a great job limiting the Trojans in the first half as Carolina quarterback Austin Deese finished the first half 4 out of 13 for 41 yards and 3 interceptions. All the Chesnee interceptions were by Dez Tate. Rodney Alexander and Adam Coxey almost had two more interceptions for the Eagles. Chesnee Senior Captain Matthew Wood was proud of defense, "All week we prepared to play well defensively, and we were able to make the plays when we had the opportunity." Camden Burns would get the Eagles back on the board in the 3rd quarter with a 6 yard pass to Curtis Stacey. Stacey made a nice move on a Trojan defender as he scored his first touchdown of the season. Jacob Kimbrell had a nice night for the Eagles at quarterback as he finished 13-17 for 252 yards and 4 touchdowns. Kimbrell also rushed 3 times for 20 yards and a touchdown. Camden Burns and Jonah Rollins also played well for the Eagles at quarterback. Josh Russell continued his solid season as the bruising senior running back finished with 64 yards on 4 carries and a touchdown. Dez Tate had a great night for the Eagles as he finished with 3 interceptions and one was returned for a touchdown. He also caught 5 passes for 71 yards and another touchdown. Matthew Lawter, Curtis Stacey, and Lorenzo Duren each had nice plays at wide receiver for the Eagles. Stacey finished with 2 catches for 41 yards and a touchdown. Lawter caught two passes for 45 yards and Duren caught 1 pass for 36 yards. Chesnee has a bye week next week, and will travel to Chapman on Thursday October the 25th for the final regular season game. The Chapman Panthers downed the Chesnee Eagles 3-1 to win the Region II-3A Volleyball title on Tuesday night.
The Lady Eagles came out strong winning the first set 25-15 as Chesnee rallied back overcoming an early 6-1 deficit. Chapman took the second set 25-21 to tie the match at one. Chapman was victorious in the third set 25-15 as the Panthers made several nice digs on strikes from Abbey Ray and AC Yelton. Chapman also won the fourth set 25-21 to win the match and the Region II-3A Championship. The match had a playoff type feel to it and Chesnee Head Coach Katie Jolley was pleased to see her team embrace the atmosphere. "They loved the atmosphere,” said Coach Jolley. “They played better because of it." Chesnee got a monster game from Junior Abbey Ray who finished with twenty one digs and twenty two kills. AC Yelton also had a nice game with twelve kills and twenty digs. Libero Shelby Harris had a good night on the defensive end with a team high twenty nine kills. Senior Abby Fisher continued her steady play on senior night as she had thirty eight assists and nine digs while Olivia Gardner also played well defensively with thirteen digs. The Lady Eagles' next match will be their playoff opener as they will be at home at least through the first round. The Broome Centurions used a 28 point first quarter to down the Chesnee Eagles 45-7 in Region II-3A play.
Broome recovered an Eagles fumble on Chesnee's first play from scrimmage and Broome's C.J. Littlejohn would rumble in from ten yards out on the next play to give Broome a 7-0 lead. Broome used back to back long touchdown passes from Brenden Taylor to Ja'Qun Wilkins to give the Centurions a 21-0 lead. Broome would round out the first quarter scoring with a ninety-two yard run from Keyvon Graham. The Chesnee defense made some adjustments in the second quarter and were able to slow the Centurions offense down. Broome's Bryant Davis managed to find the end zone from five yards out with just under three minutes to go in the first half. Chesnee found some success on the ground in the second quarter by putting Dez Tate at quarterback and using a run heavy package. Chesnee made it deep into Broome territory, but a Chesnee turnover ended the drive. Broome opened the second half scoring with a forty-seven yard Keyvon Graham punt return. Chesnee managed to get on the board at the end of the third quarter with a sixty-five yard touchdown pass from Jacob Kimbrell to Dez Tate. Tate was able to break several Centurion tackles, and outraced the defense for the score. Tate had a big game for the Eagles as he finished with six catches for 107 yards and a touchdown and he also carried the ball eight times for forty-eight yards. Jacob Kimbrell came into the game second in the area for passing yards and finished 11-20 for 140 yards and a touchdown. Alijah Means had a nice night in his first varsity game as the young Eagle finished with two catches for nineteen yards. Broome got a big night from Ja'Qun Wilkins as he finished with two catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Keyvon Graham had 99 yards rushing on four carries for the Centurions and a touchdown, and he also scored on a 47 yard punt return. Chesnee will travel to Carolina next week as the Eagles hope to keep their playoff hopes alive. Carolina fell 69-24 at Chapman on Thursday night. The Chesnee Lady Eagles downed the Woodruff Lady Wolverines 3-0 after having to rally to win the last two sets.
Chesnee got out to an early 11-5 lead in set one, and never looked back as the Lady Eagles took a wire to wire win 25-15. Woodruff came out strong in the 2nd set. The Lady Wolverines lead 15-12 at one point before the Lady Eagles were able to rally to win the set 25-20. Katelyn Barrett and Shenandoah Bishop combined for a beautiful dig to help get the Lady Eagles' rally going. Woodruff got out to another fast start in the third set as they lead 5-1 early on but the Lady Eagles would once again rally to win the 3rd set 25-22. Chesnee had to battle back in sets two and three and Chesnee Head Coach Katie Jolley was pleased to see her team clamp down in crunch time. "We were tight on both of those sets at twenty and that is when it gets crunch time,” said Coach Jolley. “We stepped up and finished strong on both of those to get the win.” The Boiling Springs Sports Journal Athlete of the Week this week Abbey Ray had a great night for the Lady Eagles as she had 24 digs, 2 aces, and 9 kills. AC Yelton also had a big night for the Lady Eagles with 14 digs and 9 kills. Libero Shelby Harris had a nice night on the defensive end with 16 digs. Katelyn Barrett and Olivia Gardner both had nice nights for the Lady Eagles as Barrett had 8 digs and 6 kills and Gardner had 7 digs. The biggest accomplishment of the night came from Chesnee senior Abby Fisher who lead the way for the Lady Eagles with twenty-one assists and eight digs. Fisher also collected her 1,000th career assists in set two. Fisher was quick to give her teammates credit for her accomplishment. "It is really because of my teammates and it's not really because of me,” said Fisher. “My stats really depend on my hitters, because they have to get amazing kills for me to get an assist." Chesnee Head Coach Katie Jolley was proud of her senior's consistent play to reach this milestone. "It just shows how consistent she is to be able to set a consistent ball. Even this season she has had between 20 and 30 assists a game." Coach Jolley said. The Lady Eagles will be back in action tomorrow night as they return to region play to host Carolina. |
