RUTHERFORDTON, NC - The Chesnee football team went just across the state line for a game at R-S Central but fell to the Hilltoppers 27-20 on Friday night.
The Eagles drove the ball down to the thirteen-yard line of the Hilltoppers on the first drive of the second quarter before settling for the first of two Ezekiel Lazarin field goals, this one from thirty yards out to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter. R-S Central responded just over three minutes later when Marcus McKiney took the ball around the right side of the Hilltopper offense into the end zone for a 7-3 lead. They added a second touchdown in the quarter when Malachi Coston rumbled in from two yards out to give the Hilltoppers a 13-3 halftime lead. In a game that saw sixteen points scored in the first thirty-four minutes of the game, it was only fitting to then see thirty-four points scored in the final fourteen minutes of the game. Noah Lawter got the fireworks started when he pulled the Eagles to within three points when he ran it in from fifteen yards out with just under ninety seconds to go in the third quarter. The Hilltoppers extended their lead just three minutes into the fourth quarter when Kihea Owens ran it in from eighteen yards out to make the score 20-10 in favor of the Hilltoppers. Lawter once again came through for the Eagles when he ran it in from forty-two yards out at the midway point of the quarter to make the score 20-17 in favor of the Hilltoppers. R-S Central once again responded with a touchdown as Kihea Owens picked up his second rushing score of the game when he rumbled in from thirty-six yards out to give the Hilltoppers a ten-point lead once again with just over four minutes to go. Chesnee drove down and was able to get three more points off the foot of Ezekiel Lazarin, this time it was a thirty-two-yard field goal to cut it to 27-20 with just under two minutes to go in the game. The Eagles initially recovered the ensuing onside kick, but a penalty caused the Eagles to have to re-kick and the bounce didn't favor the Eagles the second time around. Noah Lawter led the way for the Eagles with 110 total yards with 105 yards coming on the ground along with two touchdowns. KJ Proctor also broke a hundred yards running for 60 and throwing for 45 more yards. Kaleb Mason and Ezequiel Lazarin each had a nice catch on Friday night as Mason caught one for twenty-five yards and Lazarin had big catches on third down as well as one for a fourteen-yard gain on a fourth down. Austin Bigford and Wesley Wilkie tied for the team lead with five tackles each, as this was Wilkie's first varsity action since being called up from JV. Trey Shearer finished with 83 yards rushing and Kihea Owens finished with 71 yards rushing with a pair of scores. The Eagles will be back in action next Friday at the 'Eagle's Nest' when they host their rivals from the other end of Highway 221, the Woodruff Wolverines as kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
