In the 1st round of the 2A playoffs, the Southside Christian Lady Sabres used two big runs in the 2nd half to down the Lady Eagles 48-30.
The Lady Eagles got off to a solid start in the 1st half as they led 18-13 at the half, but depth became an issue in the 2nd half as they were without a key starter. The Lady Sabres opened the 3rd quarter on a 9-1 run to go in front 22-19, and the Lady Eagles were never able to get the lead back. While the Lady Eagles are disappointed with how the season ended, Head Coach Carey Burns was pleased with the progress her team made this season, "I think the future looks bright for Chesnee Basketball. We have a lot of good girls, good athletes coming up, and I look forward to coaching them." Whitney Haulbrooks and Carley Hammett did a terrific job defensively on All-State guard Hannah Fuller. Fuller was limited to 1 point until 5:45 left in the game. Coach Burns was pleased with the defensive effort on Fuller, "They played a very hard defensive game all night long. They stayed in man to man on her the whole game, and done a good job." Chesnee was led by Junior guard Sierra Bowen, who had 10 points. Abbey Ray and Paige Scruggs added 7 points each for the Lady Eagles. Carley Hammett added 4 points and Jessa Beach added 2 points to round out the scoring. Emma Wilt lead the Lady Sabres with 20 points. Hannah Fuller added 13 points, and Chloe Greer added 10 points. The Lady Eagles have no seniors and have several solid players coming up from JV and the middle school level. The Lady Eagles will have a solid foundation to help them transition into Region II-3A next season. The Chesnee Lady Eagles defeated the St Joseph's Lady Knights on Friday night to clinch the #4 seed in the playoffs with a 41-38 win at Landrum High School.
The Lady Eagles faced a difficult situation shortly before leaving for the game as Head Coach Carey Burns became ill and was unable to travel with the team. Acting Head Coach Chandler Turner was proud of how the Lady Eagles handled the situation, "They came together as a team and stayed focused. We all had to work together, including me and Coach (Wes) Dove to accomplish our goal." The Chesnee Lady Eagles got off to a fast start as they led 9-1 after the 1st quarter behind 5 1st quarter points from Carley Hammett. The Lady Knights used a 6-0 run to open the 2nd quarter, but the Eagles were able to maintain their lead and led 18-16 at the half. Guillana Fajardo made a 3 pointer to open the 3rd quarter to give the Lady Knights their only lead of the game. Abbey Ray was able to quickly give the Lady Eagles the lead back, and the Lady Eagles never trailed the rest of the game. The Lady Knights were able to tie the game up behind another three from Fajardo, but Whitney Haulbrooks made a fast break layup with 2:20 left in the 3rd quarter to put the Lady Eagles in front for good. The Lady Eagles were able to open the 4th quarter on a 11-5 run to lead 41-29 with under 2 minutes to play. The Lady Knights closed the game on a 9-0 run but the Lady Eagles were able to hold on for the win. Abbey Ray led the Eagles with 11 points while Carley Hammett scored 8 points for the Lady Eagles and Sierra Bowen added 7 points. Paige Scruggs and Shenan Bishop scored 7 of the Lady Eagles final 13 points. Scruggs scored 6 points in the game and Bishop added 5 points. Maddy Duwe scored 10 points to lead the Lady Knights, and Brittany Morris added 7 points. This was a huge win for a Lady Eagles squad that has no seniors on the roster. This is the first time since 2015 that the Lady Eagles have made the Playoffs. Acting Head Coach Chandler Turner was happy the Lady Eagles could reach their goal of making the playoffs, "it's nice, I'm excited for the girls. They get to do something they've always wanted to do and get to the next level." The Chesnee Lady Eagles will travel to the region 2-2A champion on Tuesday in the opening round of the playoffs. Southside Christian is the likely opponent, and the time is TBD. Christ Church outscored the Chesnee Eagles 40-24 in the 2nd half to win 65-47 in the Eagles season finale. Chesnee Head Coach Andy Pitt was proud of his seniors in their final game, "The seniors did a good job for us throughout the season, all four of them. We could count on them when we needed them. Chesnee was lead by Dez Tate, who had a game high 19 points. Nate Lamb added 10 points for the Eagles. Christ Church was lead by Rayshon Harrison, who scored 17 points. The 6'11" Freshman John Butler scored 13 points for the Cavaliers, and Graham Haley added 12 points. The season may not have ended the way Chesnee Head Coach Andy Pitt wanted to, but he is looking forward to next year. Chesnee has 4 players returning who started multiple games for the Eagles and a JV squad who had a solid year. Coach Pitt has a positive outlook for next season, " We have Dez (Tate) and Ahmad (Smith) coming back, and Kayne (Alexander). We have a talented JV team and they won 10 games this year for the first time since 2012. We are going to keep working and the kids coming up love the game. We have a good foundation, and the seniors left a legacy for the young guys to build on." Girls GameThe Christ Church Lady Cavaliers used a huge 1st half to down the Chesnee Lady Eagles 59-20 in the Lady Eagles final regular season game.
Sierra Bowen and Shenan Bishop led the Lady Eagles with 6 points each. Carley Hammett and Abbey Ray each added 4 points each. Christ Church's Marissa Powe led all scorers with 25 points. Wofford signee Lawren Cook scored 11 points for the Lady Cavs and McCall King added 8 points. Since the St. Joseph's Lady Knights were able to down Greer Middle College to force a tie for 4th place, the Lady Eagles will now play the Lady Knights tomorrow night at 6pm at Landrum in a tie breaker game. Coach Burns is looking forward to playing St Joseph's for the 3rd time this season, "This will be our third game of the week and second against St. Joseph's this week. It is hard to beat any team two times in a row and we will have our work cut out for us. We will not have the advantage of playing at home since we are playing on a neutral site, but I still feel confident we can go out and get the win." |
