LIBERTY. SC - Liberty used thirty-five second half points to down Chesnee 49-41 in the regular season finale for both teams on Friday night.
Until midway through the second quarter both teams traded touchdowns as Hayden Webb and KJ Proctor each had scoring runs for the Eagles while Peyton Reed and Seth Terry each had scores for Liberty with Terry's being a sixty-yard run. The Eagles closed out the first half strong as Kaleb Mason had a seventy-eight-yard kick return to give the Eagles the lead at 21-14 with 7:46 to go in the first half. Hayden Webb added his second touchdown run for the Eagles this time from eighteen yards out just two minutes later. Proctor closed the half with a 20-yard scoring strike to Ezequiel Lazarin, their second touchdown connection of the season. The Eagles took a 35-14 lead into the half, but Liberty opened the second half with an answer as the Red Devils scored thirty-five unanswered points to take a 49-35 lead. Seth Terry scored two of the touchdowns for the Red Devils while Austin Smith and Peyton Reed each added one of their own. The big blow came on a twenty-four-yard fumble recovery by Skylar Teague to make it 49-35. Chesnee's Kyle Martin added an eight-yard scoring run to make it 49-41 as the Eagles tried to make a comeback. KJ Proctor finished with 194 total yards and two's scores for the Eagles while Kyle Martin also added 127 total yards. Austin Bigford led the Eagles with seven and a half tackles. Seth Terry finished with 144 yards rushing for the Red Devils, and Peyton Reed added 133 yards rushing. The Eagles will be on the road next week to open the AA playoffs as they finished in a three-way tie for third place. Chesnee will have to wait until the tiebreaker is sorted out to learn their opponent for next week. Chesnee, SC- For the second week in a row the Chesnee Eagles used a late fourth quarter scoring drive followed by a huge defensive stand to seal a win, this time as they downed the Ninety-Six Wildcats 27-26 on senior night at the Eagle's Nest.
"It feels so good to pick up this win," said Chesnee lineman Etorian Valentine. "This is the best feeling to pick up the win on senior night." After both teams traded three and outs, the first big break of the night went the Eagles way as a bad snap on a punt attempt resulted in the Eagles getting the ball at the Ninety-Six twenty-three-yard line. The Eagle offense needed just four plays to cash it in, as Nick Hofer ran it in from three yards out and put Chesnee up 7-0 with just over seven minutes to go in the first quarter. Ninety-Six regained momentum thanks to a big play to start the ensuing drive as Braden Mitchell found Briant Witherspoon for a 64-yard pass to set the Wildcats up deep in Eagle territory. Mitchell ended the drive on a four-yard touchdown run to tie the game at seven with just under five minutes to go in the first quarter. After the teams traded a couple of three and outs, Ninety-Six had a huge momentum swing in the middle of the second quarter as they used a twelve-play drive that ended in a Mitchell two yard run to make it 14-7 in favor of the Wildcats. The Wildcats forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to set themselves up at the Eagles thirty-two-yard line and three plays later Mitchell found Briant Witherspoon for a fourteen-yard scoring strike to make it 20-7 with just under six minutes to go until halftime. The Eagles needed a spark and Noah Lawter provided just that on the ensuing kickoff as he took the kickoff seventy-three yards to paydirt to trim the Wildcat lead to 20-14 with 5:40 to go in the half. A few drives later the Eagles caught another break on a bad snap to set them up at the wildcat twelve-yard line and three plays later Austin Bigford cashed it in from four yards out to give Chesnee a 21-20 lead with just over a minute to go in the half. Dreydan Daniel ran the ball twenty-three yards to give the Wildcats some momentum to start the second half and followed it up later in the drive with a twenty-one-yard run. Braden Mitchell cashed it in from thirteen yards out to put the Wildcats up 26-21 with just under nine minutes to go in the third quarter. Chesnee came up with two big plays defensively in the fourth quarter and the first was a fumble recovery by Cade Spake deep in Eagle territory that set the Eagles up with a first and ten at their own eight-yard line. The drive saw sophomore quarterback KJ Proctor engineer his second career game winning drive. The first big play of the drive was an eleven-yard pass from Proctor to Jayden Williams followed by another big play on the drive, a fifteen-yard run by Hayden Webb. On the drive Austin Bigford picked up a key third down, and key fourth down conversion, but the biggest play of the drive was Bigford's eighteen-yard touchdown run to give them a 27-26 lead with eighty-two ticks left in the game. "Run hard, everyone on this team has that dog mentality," said Hayden Webb when asked what mentality he and the other running backs took into the last drive. The Wildcats managed to get into field goal range with two seconds left but the kick was no good securing the victory for the Eagles. "It's a great feeling knowing our defense has our backs especially in crunch time," said KJ Proctor when asked about his team's defense the last two weeks. "Those guys are always going out there to make the big play and have our back." With the win, the Eagles secured a playoff berth and will have a chance to secure the third seed in region I-AA with a win next week at Liberty. "It's great to clinch a playoff berth but that doesn't matter right now," said Chesnee head coach Clay Lewis. "I'm so proud of these kids because they work hard every day and have battled adversity, it's just great to see them come out with a hard-fought win." The win also sends the senior class out with a win in their final regular season home game which Lewis said he was happy about for his seniors. "Words can't how happy I am for them," said Lewis. "We talked about getting this win for them before the game and I told the younger guys let's send them out with a win." The Eagles had four rushers with over thirty yards with KJ Proctor leading the way with forty-three yards as Austin Bigford, Kyle Martin, and Hayden Webb joined Proctor with over thirty yards. Chesnee's Noah Lawter ended the game with 76 total yards for the Eagles. The Eagles ended the game with four players having over six tackles with Jayden Williams leading the way with eight tackles. Austin Bigford had seven and a half tackles while Gunther Gerstenacker had seven and Davion Stradford had six tackles of his own. Brenton Suddeth also collected a sack for the Eagles. Braden Mitchell completed thirteen passes for 147 yards and a score while also adding 60 yards rushing and three scores. Briant Witherspoon led all rushers with 79 yards rushing and all receivers with 64 yards receiving. The Eagles will hit the road next week as they take on the Liberty Red Devils for their final regular season game of the year. COLUMBIA, SC - The Chesnee volleyball team went on the road to the middle of the state on Thursday and when the day was over traveled back up Interstate 26 with a 3-0 victory over Keenan while also punching their ticket to the second round of the 2A playoffs.
"The victory tonight was just a great team effort," said Chesnee head coach Katie Jolley. "Keenan had a strong block game but our girls never gave up and came away with the win." The Eagles, who were a three seed to start the playoffs, didn't allow the number two seed Raiders much of a chance in the match as they won all three sets in pretty impressive fashion. The first and third sets saw the Eagles win 25-19 while also winning the second set with the widest margin of victory at 25-16. Pearl Holloway continued her stellar play for the Eagles registering eight kills, 18 assists, eight digs, and two ace serves. Carlee Turner led the team in kills with nine kills while Olivia Richey added five kills of her own. Haley Edmonds led the Eagles in digs with 15 digs while also adding two ace serves. Mitchell Wofford had a strong night from the service line for the Eagles as she came away with four ace serves. Chesnee will next play on Tuesday as they'll either travel to #1 seed Ninety-Six or host #4 seed Strom Thurmond in the second round of the 2A playoffs. CHERAW, SC - After an impressive first day on the course saw the Eagles establish a strong lead, the Chesnee girls' golf team backed it up on the second day with an ever better score to repeat as the 2A girls golf state champions on Tuesday.
"I feel really good about the win," said Chesnee head coach Kyle Scruggs. "We have a group of sophomores and freshmen here that will hopefully keep working and we can get two more with this group." Chesnee won the 2A state championship after firing a score of 657 over the two-day tournament at the Cheraw State Park golf course. They won the championship with a sixty-nine shot lead over Oceanside Collegiate Academy, who finished in second place with a score of 726. The victory also comes full circle as it was Ocean Collegiate who denied the Eagles their first state championship three years ago. Even with his team claiming a state championship, Scruggs says he still saw areas he believes his team could have done better. "Yesterday I knew we didn't play our absolute best and today I know we put up a pretty good score, but I still feel like we left some shots on the course," said Scruggs. "We still had several three putts but at the end of the day the girls done what they had to do and got the job done." When the Eagles first hit the course on Monday, they fired a team score 333 to take a thirty-shot lead over Oceanside Collegiate Academy who shot a second a 363 in the opening round of competition. The Eagles were led on the first day of competition by Olivia Roberts who shot an individual score of 76 and was three shots off the lead along with Addy Parker who shot a score of 78 on Monday. The second day of competition saw the Eagles cut nine shots off their first day score as they fired a team score of 324 on Tuesday. On the final day of competition, the Eagles saw four of their five golfers all shoot lower scores including Olivia Roberts and Addy Parker who both shot scores of 74 on Tuesday. Olivia Roberts won the individual side of the tournament to become the individual state champion with a two-day score of 150 while Addy Parker joined Roberts on the All-State team with a two-day score of 152 and to finish in second place overall. Along with Roberts and Parker, Olivia Shields (173) and Abby Watson (182) also were named to the All-State team after all four finished in the top ten at the tournament. "It's pretty special all four of them got named to the All-State team," said Scruggs. "We're proud to have four of them able to accomplish that feat this year." With her individual state championship, it makes two straight years that the champion came from the same school and from the same house as her sister Sydney Roberts won the individual state championship last year. "Olivia and Sydney are a solid group and it's big to have them win the individual state championship in back-to-back years," said Scruggs. "Olivia done it in pretty impressive fashion as she got an up-and-down out of the bunker on the last hole to make a fifteen-foot putt to seal it. Had she missed that putt she could have allowed the other girl a chance to send it to a playoff, but she came up clutch with a big putt to win the individual title." Chesnee wasn't the only team in the area to have an impressive two-day performance at the 2A state championships as the Landrum girls' golf team also finished in fifth place for their highest finish ever at the state tournament. Cardinals' golfer Adeline Todd joined the Chesnee foursome on the All-State team. The Eagles finish their season with a victory for the second straight season and with no seniors will return all their starters from the state championship team for next year as they will look to make it three in a row next season. With the youth of the program, they have some lofty goals they could still reach ahead of them. "It's pretty awesome that they're this young with two state championships to their name," said Scruggs. "This group still has two more years to do some more special things before any of them graduate. They have the opportunity ahead of them to win four state titles in their high school careers which doesn't happen very often." BLACKSBURG, SC - The man with the golden boot used his hands to come up with a game winning touchdown to send Chesnee home with their first win of the season as the Eagles downed Blacksburg 28-25 in a battle between two region rivals.
The Eagles knew coming into the game they needed to build momentum early offensively. "I'm so proud of these kids," said Chesnee head coach Clay Lewis. "They are finally able to enjoy all their hard work this season, what a way to end a game." "It feels amazing to come here and get a win," said Chesnee kicker Ezequiel Lazarin. "We worked hard as a team, and everyone contributed to this win." Chesnee got momentum going early offensively on their second drive of the game as Jayden Williams had a big run before KJ Proctor found Kaleb Swaney twice for twenty-three yards on the drive to set up a one yard run from Proctor to give the Eagles the 7-0 lead with just under five minutes to go in the first quarter. The Eagles kept the momentum going on the next drive defensively as Austin Bigford busted through the line on fourth down to block the punt, and after some scrambling for the ball Bigford was able to recover it in the end zone for a touchdown. The touchdown made it 14-0 with around three and a half to go in the first quarter. Blacksburg responded with a fourteen-play drive that saw Omyireia Daniels complete three passes for forty-two yards, and end in a Kolby Capps twenty-five yard field go all the way out on the near hash mark. That cut the Chesnee lead to 14-3 with just over seven and a half minutes to go in the half. Chesnee once again added on to the lead when Hayden Webb punched it in from nine yards out to make the score 21-3 in favor of the Eagles with just under a minute to play in the first half. Noah Lawter had a key sixteen-yard reception from Proctor and a key thirteen yard run on the drive. After a great return and a Chesnee penalty set Blacksburg up in great field position, they were able to take advantage as Omyireia Daniels connected with Saad Lavander from thirty-one yards out to make it 21-10 with thirty seconds to go in the half. After both teams had nice drives to open the second half that failed to produce points, Blacksburg reached the end zone on its second drive as Chaun'za Bonner ran it in from three yards out and Dre Buckson ran in the two-point conversion to make it 21-18 with just under three minutes to go in the third quarter. Dre Buckson had a thirty-yard run and Zaydron Burns had a twenty-two-yard run on the same drive. After each team traded several possessions, Blacksburg took the lead as Omyireia Daniels connected with Dre Buckson for a fifty-six yard pass play that was mostly came on the legs of Buckson after the catch, as the Wildcats took a 25-21 lead with just under seven and a half minutes to go. Chesnee then turned to its young sophomore quarterback KJ Proctor to lead his first career fourth quarter game winning drive. Proctor hit a pair of big pass plays on the drive as the first one saw him connect with Kaleb Swaney for a forty-nine yard gain and the second saw him hit the biggest pass of his young career as he found Ezequiel Lazarin in the middle of the field before Lazarin ran over and through several Wildcat defenders to find paydirt on a twenty-one yard reception to make the score 28-25 with just under five minutes to play in the game. "I saw the safety shift over and ran my route to open space," said Lazarin. "I was able to find the end zone." The reception was Lazarin's first career touchdown catch, and his third career game winner for the Eagles. The other two have been thanks to his foot as they were both game winning field goals in the 2021 season. Blacksburg tried to mount a comeback before ultimately coming up short thanks to a great stop on fourth down by Jayden Williams and the Eagle defense. "We had a couple of players step and make big plays for us defensively on that final drive," said Lewis. "I'm very proud of our kids." The win sets the Eagles up with a great chance to make the playoffs as five of the six teams in Region I-2A will make the playoffs. KJ Proctor completed eight passes for 130 yards and a score while most of the yards were thanks to Kaleb Swaney's four receptions for 78 yards. Nick Hofer led the way on the ground for the Eagles with sixty-six yards rushing. Austin Bigford had a huge night defensively as he finished with eight tackles, two sacks, a pass batted down, a blocked punt, and he recovered it for a touchdown. Another player who had a big night was Jackson Ramsey as he finished with five tackles and a sack as he harassed the Blacksburg quarterback back most of the night. "It great to be able to deliver the hits that helped our team pick up the win," said Austin Bigford about his performance. Gunther Gerstenacker and Jayden Williams also had great nights as Gerstenacker finished with six tackles and Williams with five. Hayden Webb, Noah Lawter, and Kaleb Mason each had four tackles each. "Everyone did their part and we all did well," said Bigford. "It took a team effort to pull out this win." Omyireia Daniels finished 215 yards through the air with a pair of scores. Zaydron Burris led all rushers with 114 yards rushing for the Wildcats, and Dre Buckson had two catches for 83 yards. The Eagles will return to action next Friday night as they host Ninety-Six on senior night as kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.
