BLACKSBURG, SC - The Chesnee basketball team officially started the second half of their region schedule avenging a one-point loss earlier this season by defeating Blacksburg 66-59 on Friday night.
The Eagles started the game on a hot start that they carried throughout the game and have now improved their region record to 2-3 and sit in fourth place with three important games coming up next week. "We got off to a fast start tonight," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "In the second half we went to a pressure defense and really set the tone we wanted to have for the rest of the game. We have played all week with a lot of passion and the boys competed their tails off. It was nice to see the result of their hard work translate into a win." The Eagles got off to a hot start in the first quarter behind a strong quarter from Elijah Weese as he scored nine of his team's 20 first quarter points as they held a 20-19 lead when the buzzer sounded. Brady Poole also added seven points for the Eagles in the first quarter. In the second quarter the Eagles were outscored 14-9 as the Wildcats took a 33-29 lead into halftime but they got some key contributions from Coyie Poole who scored seven of the team's nine points in the quarter. "Elijah Wease shot it really well early," said Pitt. "Coyie Poole gave us some nice minutes off the bench as well." Chesnee used their lockdown defense in the third quarter to make a run at the Blacksburg lead as they outscored the Wildcats 17-8 in the quarter as they got key contributions from their preseason All-Region players. In the third quarter both Brady Poole and KJ Valentine combined to score all 17 of the Eagles points in the quarter as they held a 46-41 lead heading into the final quarter. Both teams battled hard in the fourth quarter, but it was the Eagles who came away with the victory after outscoring the Wildcats 20-18 in the quarter. The Eagles were led by Brady Poole who scored 12 points in the quarter but also got key free throw shooting down the stretch from point guard Carson Williamson who went six of eight from the line in the final quarter. "I thought Carson showed a lot of growth tonight," said Pitt. "He was a leader out there on the floor and really got all of our guys involved in the game." Brady Poole lead the Eagles on Friday night with 29 points and was joined in double figures by KJ Valentine and Carson Williamson who both scored 11 points each. Dre Buckson and Sam McSwain both led Blacksburg in scoring as each player scored 19 points on Friday night. In the girls game the Chesnee girls fell to the number one ranked team in 2A Blacksburg on Friday night. Both teams will be back in action three times next week as they host all three games playing Brashier Middle College on Tuesday, Greer Middle College on Wednesday (makeup game from last week), and St. Joseph's on Friday night. GREENVILLE, SC - After a losing a heartbreaker on Tuesday night the Chesnee basketball team rebounded on Friday using a strong fourth quarter defense to grab a 66-49 victory over Brashier Middle College and picking up their first region win of the year.
"It was a good team win tonight," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "We took care of the ball, shot it well, and really did a nice job on the boards. It was nice to have all our guys available tonight as it's the first time in a while we've had everyone there and healthy." The Eagles took an early 16-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and were led by a strong first quarter from Brady Poole who scored 10 of the team's points in the quarter. Brashier battled back in the second quarter outscoring the Eagles 21-15 to tie the game at 31-31 when the halftime buzzer sounded as they Bengals had seven different players score a bucket in the quarter. In the third quarter the Eagles held a slim 47-44 lead thanks to some key play from Ty'Quan Dawkins who combined to score 11 points over the second and third quarters. The final quarter of play saw the Eagles play probably their best overall quarter of the season as they outscored the Bengals 19-5 to come away with the victory. Coyie Poole had a strong quarter for the Eagles as he recorded eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter. Chesnee ended the night with three different players scoring in double figures as Coyie Poole (14) and Ty'Quan Dawkins (11) both finished just behind Brady Poole who led all Eagles scorers with 17 points. Brashier was led by Scott Bousquet, who tied Poole for most points in the game, with 17 points of his own. The Eagles are scheduled to return to the court on Tuesday in a road region matchup against St. Joseph's before returning home on Friday in another region matchup against Greer Middle College. |
