CHESNEE, SC - The Walhalla football team made the long trek down Highway 11 to take on Chesnee and went home with a 42-30 victory on Friday night.
Walhalla scored on their opening two drives as quarterback Bryce Payne found Joe Lockridge on a streak for a fifty-three-yard score and then found Nathaniel Collins for a twenty-one-yard score that put Walhalla up sixteen with just over four minutes to go in the first quarter. Chesnee responded on the ensuing drive as Davion Stradford took an end around reverse on fourth down forty yards for a touchdown to make it fourteen to seven. On the ensuing kickoff Chesnee kicker Ezekiel Lazarin executed a perfect side of the foot onside kick and recovered it himself near midfield. Unfortunately for the Eagles, a fumble near the end zone ended up costing them a chance at a touchdown. Chesnee's Stradford once again hit a big play with just under four minutes to go in the half, when he caught a deep ball from KJ Proctor for a thirty-three-yard scoring pass to make it 16-14 in favor of the Razorbacks. Walhalla responded with an eleven-play drive that ended with a Bryce Payne one yard run with just over thirty ticks left on the clock before halftime, but Walhalla missed on the two-point try to make the halftime score 22-14. To open the second half the Eagles used an eleven-play drive of their own, with this one ending in a thirty-two-yard field goal off the foot of Ezekiel Lazarin to make the score 22-17 with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter. The Razorbacks fumbled on the first play of their next drive and the Eagles cashed in on it three plays later as Damarius McDowell rumbled in from five yards out to give Chesnee its first lead of the night at 23-22 nearing the midpoint of the third quarter. Walhalla reclaimed the lead thanks to a three-yard run by Bryce Payne to make it 30-23 with 5:06 left in the third as Payne found Drake Easton for a fifty-two-yard gain to setup the score. The Eagles once again responded with a long eleven play drive that ended with a score, as this one was a thirteen-yard run from Damarius McDowell to tie the game at thirty all. In a game that featured long drives, it was only fitting for the game deciding drive to be a long one, as Walhalla scored on a thirteen-play drive that ate up nearly five minutes off the clock as Payne hooked up with Nathaniel Collins from thirteen yards out to make the score 36-30 midway through the fourth quarter. Walhalla sealed the game on the next drive as Bryce Payne ran it in from four yards out to make the score 42-30 with just over a minute left in the game. The Eagles had three rushers finish with over fifty yards as Kyle Martin had sixty yards, Damarius McDowell rushed for fifty-three and KJ Proctor added fifty. The two touchdowns scored by McDowell were the first two offensive touchdowns of his career and the third overall after he added a fumble return for a touchdown last week. Davion Stradford finished with ninety-two total yards as he ran for forty and a score and had fifty-two receiving yards along with another score. Dylan Jolley had 11.5 tackles for the Eagles, including a sack. Bryce Payne finished with all six touchdowns for Walhalla, with three on the ground and three in the air. He threw for 326 yards and rushed for eighty. Dylan McCurray added 138 total yards while Nathaniel Collins added 148 yards receiving with two scores. The Eagles will hit the road next week as they travel to R-S Central for a game that is scheduled for a 7:30 PM kickoff. Pearl Holloway led the Eagles with five kills, 23 assists, and eight ace serves. CHESNEE GIRLS GOLF After a strong fifth place finish at the Lady Rebel Invitational on Tuesday, the Eagles kept their strong play going on Thursday when they defeated district foe Boiling Springs 159-193 at Meadowbrook Golf Course. At the Lady Rebel Invitational, Chesnee head coach Kyle Scruggs thought his team had left some shots on the course but on Thursday it seemed they improved on that as they lowered their overall team score. Olivia Roberts won the medalist honors with a match low score of 36 and was followed closely by Olivia Shields who shot a score of 38. Addy Parker added a 40 for the Eagles and Abigail Watson also turned in a score of 45.
