The Woodruff Wolverines used a dominant 1st quarter to down the Chesnee Eagles 73-61 in a matchup of county rivals on Friday night. The Wolverines opened the game on a 13-2 run and never looked back as Omarion McKelvin scored six of his eleven points on the night during the run. Chesnee Head Coach Andy Pitt was disappointed in his team's start to the game. "We didn't come out with a lot energy at the start, and Woodruff's MO is that they are going to come out and play hard," Pitt said. "We didn't match their intensity early on and they had some jumpers go in which fed Woodruff's confidence. Chesnee was able to claw back into by outscoring the Wolverines 24-16 in the second quarter to cut the Wolverines lead to seven as Ahmad Smith hit a three pointer at the buzzer for the Eagles. The Wolverines responded with a 9-0 run to start the third quarter to pull away from the Eagles as they led 55-43 at the end of the quarter. The Eagles were able to cut the Wolverines lead to eight early in the fourth quarter but a 7-0 run for the Wolverines ended the Eagles chances for a comeback. Ahmad Smith led all scorers with 25 points while Dez Tate also added 20 points for the Eagles. Smith had a huge first half as the Wolverines were keying defensively on Tate and Alijah Means. Coach Pitt was pleased to see Smith take advantage of the opportunity. “It was their game plan to come out and shut Dez down, and they tried to lock down on Alijah too." Pitt said "that opened up things for Ahmad and he did what we needed to do as far as taking advantage of his opportunities." Marquel Evins led the Wolverines with 14 points. Marcellas Dial added 13 points while Omarion McKelvin and Jonathan West both added 11 points each for Woodruff. Chesnee Head Coach Carey Burns was pleased with her team's play in the second and third quarters but was disappointed her team couldn't put together a solid four quarters. "We need four good quarters not just two. I'm proud of how we played in the second and third quarters but we need to be consistent for a full game," Burns said Sierra Bowen led the Lady Eagles in scoring with twelve points while Abbey Ray also added six points on Friday night. Coach Burns was proud of Bowen's effort. "Sierra is a leader on the court," said Coach Burns. "She is who the team looks to for consistency." Zavia Jeter led the Lady Wolverines with 15 points including 10 in the first half while Brooke Bailey added 13 points on Friday night. The Chesnee Eagles earned a split with Berea and Blue Ridge in a tri-match on Wednesday evening at Blue Ridge High School.
Brandon Dasen got a win in both matches to earn his 100th career win, an achievement that was hard earned and well deserved according to Chesnee Head Wrestling Coach Jon Rentz, "Brandon is the epitome of hard work and the belief that if you work hard you can achieve anything,” said Coach Rentz. “Brandon has not always been the most talented in some matches but he outworks his opponent. There is a saying that hard work beats talent when talent won’t work and that is Brandon, he will outwork you." The achievement is a big accomplishment for Brandon and the Chesnee wrestling program. "It places Brandon in an elite part of our program because only a few have ever reached this milestone,” said Coach Rentz. “One-hundred wins is hard to accomplish in four years and Brandon has worked very hard for this.” Dasen, who is committed to Coker College to wrestle next year, is very proud of his accomplishments but he has bigger goals in mind that he wants to accomplish. "it is nice putting it into perspective, but it is not my main goal this season,” said Dasen. “My goals this season are to set the school wins record and win a state championship." In the Eagles first match of the night they were able to capture a 42-27 win over Berea. The Eagles raced out to a 30-6 lead that the Bulldogs were unable to overcome and it was a start that Coach Rentz was very pleased to see out of his team. "It was good as our lighter weights were pretty dominant and we knew they were going to have some heavier guys that could compete with us a little bit,” said Coach Rentz. “We are a young team so it was good to take that win.” The Eagles got pins from Dasen, Ford Thomas, Trevor Blankenship, Bryson Wallace, Jacob Aparis and Corey Seay. Taylor Tracy also got a win via forfeit. In the second match of the night the Eagles fell 39-33 to Blue Ridge but Coach Rentz was still pleased with his team's effort against a tough Tigers squad, "We always go back and forth and it always seems to come down to the heavyweights for some reason,” said Coach Rentz. “Blue Ridge wrestled really good tonight and I'm proud of our guys they fought hard." Landrum jumped to a 41-23 halftime lead over the Chesnee Eagles on their way to a 65-48 win.
Trey Smith led the Cardinals with a game high 30 points and he scored 20 of those in the first half to help the Cardinals get a 18 point halftime lead. Means also stepped up in the absent of Dez Tate. Chesnee Head Coach Andy Pitt was pleased with his Sophomore forward's performance, "Alijah is going to be a heck of a talent, he has got a lot of potential if he continues to work and grow. We have a good solid group of young players we just have to continue to work no matter the outcome." Pitt said Ahmad Smith also had a nice night for the Eagles as he finished with 12 points and had several nice blocks on the defensive end. Girls Game The Landrum Lady Cardinals jumped out to a 13-2 lead after the first quarter and never looked back on their way to a 56-30 win over the Chesnee Lady Eagles.
