Chesnee golf capped a solid start to the season with win yesterday in a quad match with Landrum, St Joe's, and Greer Middle College.
Chesnee finished 23 strokes ahead of 2A #2 St Joseph's. Earlier in the week the Eagles finished 5th at the Rebel Invitation in a strong field that featured several ranked teams. Coleton Bridges led the Eagles with a top 8 finish. Spencer Addley, Jake Vaughan, and Garrett Cooper also had strong performances for the Eagles. Chesnee Coach Andy Pitt was pleased with his team's performance, "It was a really nice showing for us, proving we could compete with some of the best in the state. Every team that finished in front of us was ranked. It was nice to beat some ranked teams as well, like 5A #9 Byrnes, 5A #6 Mauldin, and 2A #3 Ninety Six." In the quad match, Garrett Cooper led all scorers with a 37. Coleton Bridges finished one stroke behind Cooper, and Spencer Addley and Jake Vaughn each shot a 40. Coach Pitt was pleased with his team's performance in adverse conditions, "Yesterday was a set of brutal conditions. The temp dropped quickly and the winds picked up. It was nice to see our guys play well in adverse conditions." Coach Pitt was also pleased with his team's performance against strong competition, "Again, another win over a ranked team is huge. St. Joseph's is #2 and was state runner-up last year. We want to keep trending up." Coach Pitt thinks the outlook on the season is good for his team, "I don't expect us to play our best golf right now, It's still really early. The key for our guys is to focus and continue working hard." On a cold night in Chesnee, both Eagle teams were hot offensively. Unfortunately for Chesnee, 4A #3 Eastside was just a little bit hotter at the plate and rode the hot bats to a 10-8 win over Chesnee.
Chesnee fell behind early as Noel Mitchell drove in Tank Harrison to put Eastside up 1-0 in the top of the 1st. Chesnee responded with a 6-run 2nd inning. Kip Bagwell got the inning started off with a sharp single up the middle. Bagwell, Blake Scruggs, Nolan Hammett, Bo Walker, Kobe Miller, and Dawson Williamson would all come around to score for the Eagles in the 2nd inning. Eastside responded by scoring 5 runs in the 3rd to tie the game up at 6. Luke Cash drove in Kip Bagwell in the bottom of the 3rd to put Chesnee back up 7-6. After the 3rd inning, Bo Walker came on to pitch closing the book on Chesnee starter Nate Lamb. Lamb struck out 8 in 3 innings. Chesnee as a team struck out 15 Eastside batters. Eastside pulled ahead 8-7 after back-to-back doubles by Steve Wagner and Kane Trujillo in the top of the 6th. Chesnee tied the game at 8 in the bottom half of the inning on a sharp single by Kyler Reagan that scored Williamson. Eastside got a massive homerun to dead straightaway center field that proved to be the deciding factor from Will Posey that plated two runs for Eastside to make the score 10-8. Chesnee will look to bounce back tomorrow nightas the Eagles travel to Greer Middle College to start region play. |
