FORT MILL, SC - After falling to Nation Ford to start their region season at home earlier this year, the Boiling Springs softball team avenged that loss in a 15-3 road win over the Falcons on Tuesday night.
Boiling Springs jumped on the Falcons early in the top of the first inning as they scored three runs to get the game started. The scoring got started when with one out, AD Raines hit a single to centerfield before advancing to second base when Bri Stanley worked a four-pitch walk. Sayde Parris hit a single to centerfield to bring home Raines giving Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead. Kate Philbeck followed Parris with a sacrifice bunt to advance Bri McAbee (running for Stanley) and Emma Wilkins (running for Parris) to second and third base before both scored on a Gracen Bennett single to rightfield to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead before the Falcons had even swung a bat. Parris led off the third inning with a single to leftfield before Wilkins, who was running for Parris, advanced to second on a second consecutive successful sacrifice bunt by Philbeck. Wilkins advanced to third base on a Bennett single to left field before scoring on a Jacie Ross to left field that put the Bulldogs lead at 4-0 and allowed Bennett to advance to third base. Bennett made the Bulldogs lead 5-0 when she scored from third base on a single to centerfield by Sarah Ezell. Nation Ford was able to add their first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Boiling Springs lead to 5-1 going into the fourth inning. AD Raines led off the top of the fourth inning by working a four-pitch walk before coming around to score on a homerun to rightfield by Bri Stanley to push the Bulldogs lead to 7-1 over the Falcons. Sayde Parris followed Stanley by being hit by a pitch before Wilkins advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Philbeck and then went to third base on a sacrifice fly to rightfield by Gracen Bennett. Wilkins made the score 8-1 in favor of the Bulldogs by scoring on a wild pitch. The Falcons added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off an error and a double to cut the Boiling Springs lead to 8-3 over Nation Ford. Both teams went scoreless in the fifth inning but in the sixth inning the Boiling Springs bats had one of their best innings of the season. AD Raines led off the sixth inning with a single to centerfield before coming around to score on a homerun to centerfield by Sayde Parris pushing the Bulldogs lead to 10-3 over the Falcons. Kate Philbeck followed Parris with a single to leftfield and advanced to second base on a Falcons error. Philbeck stole third base before coming around to score on a single to leftfield by Gracen Bennett to make the Bulldogs lead 11-3 over the Falcons. Leaha Rushing advanced Bennett to third base on a double to rightfield before Bennett scored on a single to rightfield by Jacie Ross to make the Bulldogs lead 12-3 over the Falcons while Rushing moved to third base and Ross advanced to second base on the throw. Rushing made the lead 13-3 when she scored on a wild pitch to Sarah Ezell, who reached base on a five pitch walk. With two outs in the inning, Raines came to bat for the second time in the inning and repeated her performance from the first at-bat by singling to centerfield which allowed both Ross and Ezell to score and push the Bulldogs lead to 15-3 over the Falcons. In the bottom of the sixth inning needing two runs to keep the game going, the Falcons were able to get a single with two outs but Boiling Springs pitcher Bri Stanley struck out the final batter to clinch the victory for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs offense had a very strong night as they saw eight of their ten batters all reach base via a hit on Tuesday night with each of those scoring at least one run. As a team the Bulldogs had 17 hits while Gracen Bennett and Sayde Parris led the Bulldogs in RBIs as they each had three RBIs apiece. Boiling Springs pitcher Bri Stanley had another strong performance as she pitched all six innings allowing only five hits while striking out nine of the 26 Nation Ford batters she faced. The Bulldogs defense also continued their improved play as they only had one error over six innings. The Bulldogs are next scheduled to play Clover at home on Thursday, weather permitting, before traveling to the Eastman Invitational softball tournament in Kingsport, TN on Friday for a three-day tournament. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs baseball team opened up region play with a big victory over Clover as they defeated the Blue Eagles 8-2 in a home matchup on Monday night.
"It's a good feeling to start out region play with a win," said Bulldogs head coach Jeff Lipscomb. "You always worry about that first game despite having a pretty good non-region schedule and after giving up a cheap run to start the night our guys bounced back in the bottom half of the inning. We hit the ball well tonight and hopefully we can carry that into Wednesday and Friday." Clover grabbed the first lead of the game when Ben Snavely reached base on an infield single before advancing to third base on an error and scoring on wild pitch on a called third strike. With that wild pitch third strike that allowed the Clover hitter to reach base, Bulldogs pitcher Tristan Smith had the rare feat of striking out four different batters in the inning. The Boiling Springs offense battled back in impressive fashion during the bottom half of the first inning as they scored six runs to take the lead over the Blue Eagles. The Bulldogs got the inning started when Luke Compton singled to centerfield before stealing second and third base while Hudson Wilson worked a walk. With runners on first and third, on a 2-0 count Bulldogs hitter Tristan Smith crushed a homerun to right field to give Boiling Springs a 3-1 lead with no outs. Davis Starnes followed Smith with a double that landed at the base of the leftfield wall before stealing third base and scoring on a single to leftfield by Jackson Cole. Cole advanced to third base on a double to right centerfield by Corben Childers before both runners scored a single to leftfield by Jackson Reel to give the Bulldogs a 6-1 lead over the Blue Eagles at the end of the first inning. Clover added a run in the second inning to cut the Bulldogs lead to 6-2 as they were able to score on a runner coming home on plays that included a fielder's choice, a wild pitch, and an error. From the third inning through the end of the game the Blue Eagles only had two players reach base as Tristan Smith struck out ten of the twelve batters he faced from the third inning until one out left in the sixth inning. Smith struck out 15 batters on Monday while only allowing one hit and no earned runs. "He's special and the Lord blessed him with a lightning bolt for a left arm," said Lipscomb about Smith's performance on the mound. "It's hard for high school kids do much with what he does on the mound, he's just a special kid." In the bottom of the third inning Bulldogs hitter Jackson Cole led off the inning with a towering homerun to rightfield to push the Bulldogs lead to 7-2 over the Blue Eagles. Ashton Smith followed Cole by working a walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch and to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Jackson Reel. Smith made the Boiling Springs lead 8-2 when he scored on a sacrifice flyball to centerfield by Luke Compton. When Bulldogs Tristan Smith left the game after pitching five and two-thirds innings, he was replaced by Jackson Kostiuk who pitched a scoreless one and a third innings while striking out two batters and not allowing a baserunner. Boiling Springs will look to build on the momentum from their win on Monday night as they face Clover twice more this week in region play, at Clover on Wednesday and at home again on Friday. Lipscomb says he knows now that his team is in region play, it's going to be a battle each time they hit the field from here until the end of the season. "We had a great run last year in region," said Lipscomb. "We had some great games last year and we know it's going to be a battle each game. If we come ready to place in each game I think we can be successful again in this region and hopefully that can carry over into the playoffs." SPARTANBURG, SC - On Saturday the Coaches Classic track event was held at Spartanburg High School where many of our local athletes had strong showings as they prepare for the upcoming region and county meets.
Boiling Springs saw junior sprinter Carmelo Martin set a school record in the 100m while winning the meet in a time of 10.55 seconds, though the record is unofficial because of wind at the event on Saturday. The Bulldogs also saw junior Spencer Eison win the triple jump event with a distance of 43'8.5" and sophomore JoJo Barrett finish in fifth place of the same event. The Bulldogs 4x400 boys relay team finished in ninth place with a time of 3:44.18. Boiling Springs freshman Sydney Watson came home with a second-place finish in the 400m girls hurdles with a time of 1:09.54 just ahead of Chapman's Polly Addington who finished in third place. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - In front of a large crowd of fans, the Boiling Springs boys' and girls' lacrosse teams held a combined senior day to honor their combined twenty-one seniors for the time they've spent investing into the Bulldogs programs.
Both teams came away with victories as the boys' team defeated Asheville 19-1 and the girls' team came away with an 10-0 victory over the same Asheville team as well. The boys' team honored twelve seniors that included a group consisting of Will Bowen, Matthew Thomas, Ethan Coppola, Micah Shane Horton, Ethan Westall, Connor Riordan, Ashton Scott, Brooks Bishop, Will Fish, Kaden Jenkins, Mathias Oslund, and Jordan Reid. The girls' team honored nine seniors led by Annaleigh McCallister, Emily Krechko, Izzy Boyd, Breanna Mitchell, Emma Flynn, Lani Hodge, Bethany Winebrenner, Grace Dismukes, and Brooke Dimery. In the boy's game the Bulldogs got a strong overall performance on both the offensive and defensive side of the field as they scored eighteen straight goals before giving up their first goal of the game with just six minutes to go in the game. "Our seniors worked hard all year and have worked for all the accomplishments they've earned," said Bulldogs defensive coach Tanner Mills. "We're super proud of those guys on defense like Jordan Reid, Ethan Westall, and all those seniors. We're one of the best defenses because of the work they've put into this team." Senior Kaden Jenkins started the Bulldogs scoring with a right-handed shot on a crossing route off an assist from Elijah Smith that found the back of the net to give Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the match. Ashton Smith, another Bulldogs senior, made the Boiling Springs lead 2-0 just two minutes later with a left-handed shot that found the back of the Cougars net. Elijah Smith became the first non-senior to score for the Bulldogs at the seven-minute mark when he found the back of the net on a left-handed shot off an assist from Mathias Oslund. Smith added another goal in the first quarter in between goals from seniors Ethan Westall and Brooks Bishop as the Bulldogs claimed a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Smith started the second quarter with a goal before seniors Bishop, Mathias Oslund, and Connor Riordan each added goals for the Bulldogs. For Bishop, it was his second of four goals in the match, with his first four goals of his career all coming on senior day. "Our seniors have worked hard for this honor," said Mills. "You look at Brooks Bishop as he's worked hard at defensive mid for us all year and went in today on offense and got four goals, the first of his career and it just shows how hard these guys work to be better each day." Smith and sophomore Colin Brown added two more goals in the quarter to push the Boiling Springs lead to 13-0 when the siren sounded for halftime. Senior Micah Shane Horton controlled the opening faceoff to start the second half before firing a twenty-yard right-handed shot that found the top left of the net to make the Boiling Springs lead 14-0 just seconds into the second half. Chase Miller, Elijah Smith, and Matthias Oslund each added a goal each in the third quarter to make the Bulldogs lead 17-0 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs added the fourth goal of the match from Brooks Bishop and a goal from freshman Lincoln Huskey to grab the 19-1 victory. Elijah Smith led the Bulldogs with five goals as senior Brooks Bishop was just behind with four goals. Senior Micah Shane Horton controlled the faceoffs for the Bulldogs as he won twelve of his sixteen opportunities, while Ethan Westall had the most groundballs possessed with five. Bulldogs' goalie Michael Nat helped control the Asheville attack as he recorded four saves in the game. In the girls' game the Bulldogs got a big game from senior Lani Hodge who scored four of the Bulldogs ten goals on Saturday. Hodge started her game with back-to-back goals that were separated by five minutes of game time as she gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead with just under six minutes to go in the half. Kristen Fischer made the Bulldogs lead 3-0 at halftime when she hit a right-handed shot on a crossing route that found the bottom left corner of the net with just two seconds left in the first half. Hodge added two more goals in the second half while fellow senior Annaleigh McCallister added a goal along with three goals from Mia Lockwood to push their lead to 10-0 over the Bulldogs. The Boiling Springs boys' team will return to action on Monday when they travel to TL Hanna at 7:30 PM while the girls' team will return to action on Monday in a home matchup against Christ Church that starts at 7:00 PM. ROEBUCK, SC - After a couple of tough outings in their past three games, the Boiling Springs softball team bounced back with an impressive 1-0 victory over Dorman on Friday night.
The Bulldogs got a great night on the mound from sophomore pitcher Bri Stanley who pitched all seven innings while only allowing seven hits and striking out three batters. With Stanley working strong from the mound, she was also getting a strong defensive effort in the field as a group that had committed ten errors in their last three games were flawless on Friday night. While Boiling Springs was getting a good pitching effort from Stanley, Dorman was also getting a good performance from pitcher Kasey Wolfe who had held the Bulldogs scoreless for the first three innings. In the top of the fourth inning Grace Geddes and AD Raines led off the inning with singles for the Bulldogs. Geddes was forced out on a fielder's choice at third base on the next at-bat but it allowed Raines to advance to second base. On the next at-bat Bri Stanley came to the plate where she hit a single to centerfield on the first pitch of the at-bat allowing Raines to race around third base and score to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Dorman tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning as they started the inning with a single and a double to put runners at second and third base. Stanley then forced a popup in foul territory to third baseman Kate Philbeck for the first out of the inning before Philbeck fielded a bunt and fired to first base to give the Cavaliers two outs with runners still stranded at second and third base. The final out of the game came when Stanley forced a fly ball to shortstop Leaha Rushing to help secure the win for the Bulldogs and give the Cavaliers only their third loss of the season. Boiling Springs will look to build on their momentum from the win over the Cavaliers on Tuesday when they travel to Nation Ford for another region matchup, looking to overcome a loss to the Falcons earlier this season. The Bulldogs will also head to the Eastman Invitational in Kingsport, TN at the end of next week for their last games before spring break. CLOVER, SC - The Boiling Springs boys’ tennis team went on the road to Clover on Thursday and came away with a 6-0 victory which made the long road trip back to Boiling Springs an enjoyable one as the Bulldogs improved to 5-3 on the season and 2-2 in region play.
”Overall it was a great win,” said Bulldogs head coach Caleb Weathers. “The long ride home isn’t so bad when every person on the bus gets to come home with a win.” The Bulldogs started off the night strong as number one singles player Rishi Patel defeat Clover’s Will Holden (6-3, 6-2) and Seth Evan’s came away with a victory (6-3, 6-0) at number two singles for the Bulldogs. Richie Khouri came away with a victory (6-1, 6-1) at number three singles while Ben Reese won in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) for the Bulldogs at number four singles that clinched the match in favor of the Bulldogs. In the number five singles there was a good competition between Boiling Springs’ Nate Miller and Clover’s Matthew Jackson as the match was sent to a tiebreaker (6-3, 1-6) but Miller eventually came away with the 10-8 victory. Boiling Springs picked up a win in number two doubles as Preston Reese and Chandler McCraw (6-1, 6-4) came away with the victory and they also picked up a victory in a pro-set match at number one singles from Rishi Patel and Seth Evan’s 8-3. The Bulldogs will play their last match before spring break on Tuesday when they host Fort Mill for another key region matchup. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - After defeating Chapin 11-4 on the road Monday night, the Boiling Springs baseball team backed up their performance with a 9-3 home victory over the Eagles to improve to 8-2 on the season Tuesday night. "I'm really proud of how we've been swinging the bat the last two games as we've scored twenty runs combined," said Bulldogs head coach Jeff Lipscomb. "We've come alive with the bats and we want to keep that going especially as we head into region play next week." The Bulldogs got another strong night on the mound from starting pitcher Tristan Smith who pitched five innings while striking out thirteen batters and only allowing one run. "He's getting better as the season goes along," said Lipscomb. "At times we think he might be struggling or not doing exactly what we saw from him last year but then you look, and he has thirteen strikeouts while only allowing one run over five innings. At the end of the day, we're going to be in every game that he pitches." Luke Compton, who singled to start off the Bulldogs side of the first inning, gave Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead when he advanced to third on a single to left field by Hudson Wilson before scoring on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Davis Starnes. The only blemish to Smith's pitching night came in the top of the second inning when JP Hornick hit a homerun to left centerfield on a curveball to tie the game at 1-1. Smith rebounded by striking out seven of the next nine batters he faced while also picking off an Eagles runner to keep Chapin scoreless in the third and fourth innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning with one out, Ashton Smith smacked a double to left centerfield that hit at the base of the wall before reaching third base on a wild pitch and coming home to score on a double steal to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Hudson Wilson singled to centerfield in the bottom of the fifth inning with one out before advancing to second base on a single to left field by Tristan Smith. Wilson made the Boiling Springs lead 3-1 when he came home to score on a double to left field by Davis Starnes putting Smith and Starnes at second and third base. With two runners on and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs Ashton Smith continued his strong night at the plate by crushing a three-run homerun that cleared the rightfield scoreboard landing in the school's parking lot. According to Lipscomb, the homerun is one of the biggest homeruns he's ever seen hit by a Boiling Springs baseball player. "That's the farthest hit homerun I've seen hit at a Boiling Springs field, either here or at the old field," said Lipscomb. "That ball was crushed and it was big for us because that lead made everything a lot easier for us. I'm glad for Ashton too because he's always in the cages before and after practices working on his swing and to see him reap the benefit of that hard work is great to see. I'm really proud of him." Chapin looked to cut into the Boiling Springs lead in the top of the sixth inning as they added two runs but as they tried to add a third run a great relay from left field allowed Bulldogs catcher Brent Fowler to put a tag on the Eagles runner for the third out of the inning and keep the Boiling Springs lead at 6-3. The Bulldogs offense got back to work in the bottom of the sixth inning as Luke Compton worked a walk before scoring from first base on a Chapin error that allowed Hudson Wilson to reach second base. Wilson made the Boiling Springs lead 8-3 when he scored on a double to leftfield by Tristan Smith but Smith was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple. Davis Starnes reached base by working a walk and after two more walks to reach third base was able to push the Boiling Springs lead to 9-3 when Jackson Reel was hit by a pitch. Starnes, who came on in relief of Tristan Smith on the mound, was able to end the game for the Bulldogs by striking out the final batter of the game to give Boiling Springs the victory. Boiling Springs will now turn their focus to a two-game series against Dorman that is scheduled to start at Dorman on Wednesday before the Bulldogs host the Cavaliers on Friday night. While the Bulldogs have their eyes on next week when region play starts, Lipscomb said that pride will keep his team focused on the series against Dorman as the rivalry with the Cavaliers goes back many years. "Throughout my whole coaching career that's been one of our top rivals," said Lipscomb. "We want to go over there and beat them and I'm sure they feel the same way about us. We've had some battles over the years going all the way back to the early 2000's and while they're in a different region we both have pride and want to win that game." Bulldogs Soccer Takes Two Over IndiansWhile the Boiling Springs baseball team was picking up a victory on Tuesday night, so were two more of the Bulldogs athletic programs as both the boys and girls soccer teams came away with region victories over Gaffney.
The Boiling Springs boys team went on the road to Gaffney to pick up a 4-0 win over the Indians to pick up a key region victory. The Bulldogs got two goals from senior Peyton Pressley as well as one goal each from Christian Gonzalez and Yonathan Gonzalez. The boys' team will next return to the field on Friday when they travel to Nation Ford for another region matchup. The Boiling Springs girls team also picked up a 3-0 home victory over the Indians for their first region win of the season. The Bulldogs got goals from senior Kylie Horton, junior Emily Vargas, and freshman Charley Kerr. Boiling Springs will next travel to Dorman on Thursday in a non-region matchup. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs boy's tennis accomplished a feat that they haven't accomplished in at least four years as they defeated Dorman 4-2 on Monday afternoon in a matchup that was rescheduled from earlier this season.
"It's a huge win for us," said Bulldogs head coach Caleb Weathers. "It's the first time in the four years that I've been here that we've defeated Dorman in the regular season. Being able to pull this one out is huge, and I know it's big win for the guys." With the Bulldogs losing the last few years by scores of 4-3 to the Cavaliers, it felt like the match could go that way again as the Bulldogs held a 3-2 lead. Holding the slim lead, the Bulldogs got a key victory at their number three doubles as Richie Khouri came away with a 10-8 tiebreaker victory on a return at the net that found the back right corner of the court for the winning point. The match had been split (6-4, 3-6) prior to heading into the tiebreaker set. Boiling Springs also got wins in the number four singles as Ben Reese came away with a (6-2, 6-2) victory and Nate Miller (6-4, 6-3) added another victory at number five singles. Preston Reese and Chandler McCraw (6-1, 6-2) also came away with a victory for the Bulldogs in number two doubles. "I've told our guys that people see how good the guys at the top are, but high school tennis is won by the guys at the bottom half of the ladder," said Weathers. "Everywhere we go there's going to be guys at the top that just love tennis but I tell our guys if we can be strong at the bottom half and catch people at their weaker spots we can pick up wins. We're fairly young on the bottom half of our ladder but they're a really hungry group that wants to get better and take their tennis very seriously." Boiling Springs will now look to build on their momentum as they go back into region play on Tuesday when they travel to Nation Ford. "We came into this contest today with a lot of momentum from how well we played a good Fort Mill team last week," said Weathers. "To see that come to fruition tonight brings us a lot of motivation going into a match against another good team in Nation Ford tomorrow. Proving to ourselves we can pull out wins against good teams even when we don't play our best will only help us with our confidence going forward especially if we're playing our best tennis." BOILING SPRINGS, SC - Boiling Springs golfer Walker Greene stepped into the number one spot for the Bulldogs in the Spartanburg County Championship and ended up coming away with the biggest individual trophy as he claimed the 2022 Spartanburg County Championship individual title on Monday.
Greene, stepping in for Andrew Gregory at the number one spot for the Bulldogs on Monday, was the only golfer to shoot under par as he fired a tournament low score of 68, four shots under par at the Woodfin Ridge Golf Course. "It was a great day on the course today and I just had everything dialed in," said Bulldogs golfer Walker Greene. "I was putting and hitting good as my alignment was right which just made it a good day. It's great knowing that I can put up that type of score and now I'm the champion." Bulldogs coach Josh Pruitt was very happy about Greene's performance on Monday as he stepped in with a big performance at the number one spot as he's normally the number three golfer for Boiling Springs. "Walker is a great kid," said Pruit. "I'm so proud of him as he is normally our number three golfer and he kept it all together today as he overcome some shots while also parring the final hole to be the only red number on the board today." Boiling Springs finished the tournament in second place as a team after shooting a combined team score of 319, which was just nine shots back of Spartanburg who won the team competition with a score of 310. "We're still trying to get back healthy," said Pruitt. "There's still a long way to go throughout the season but I still feel comfortable as I did to start the year. Once we get all our players back healthy and get some reps, I think we'll be alright." The Bulldogs were joined by other local teams at the county tournament as Boiling Springs finished one shot ahead of third place Dorman (320) and three shots ahead of fourth place Woodruff (322). As far as other teams in the northern part of Spartanburg County, Spartanburg Christian Academy shot a 355, Chesnee shot a 373, Chapman shot a 379, and Landrum shot a team score of 409. Walker was joined on the All-County team by Spartanburg's Connor Williams (72), Woodruff's Ben McKinney (77), SCA's Lathan Moss (78), Dorman's Will Ruth (78) as well as Spartanburg Day's Granger Amick (76) and Carter Boyd (78). Boiling Springs will look to build on their momentum from the Spartanburg County tournament into their next tournament at the Georgia/South Carolina Cup that will be held from April 1-2 at the Stoney Point Golf Course in Greenwood, SC. |
