While the victory to end the season last year didn't help the Bulldogs with their playoff hopes it was a significant victory for another reason. With the victory over Clover at the end of last season Boiling Springs head football coach Rick Tate moved into a tie for second place for most victories by a Bulldogs football coach with thirty-nine victories tying him with former Boiling Springs coach Bruce Clark and trail only the legendary Tom McIntyre. "That's something I've never looked at a lot but it's naturally a good honor," said Coach Tate who later joked, "I don't think my name will ever be associated with Tom McIntyre as far as greatness because he was Boiling Springs football." The Bulldogs will get their first chance to put Coach Tate in second place all by himself when they travel to face Westside on August 24th. When the Bulldogs claim their first win this season it will give Coach Tate forty victories in his career at Boiling Springs and he will only trail former Boiling Springs head coach Tom McIntyre who won seventy-seven games with the Bulldogs from 1960-1973. We wanted to update you on a few of those changes here to get you ready for the upcoming season. One major change is that the Bulldogs have added new members to their region that has now changed from Region IIi-5A the last few seasons to now becoming Region II-5A. The Bulldogs will still compete in region play with familiar foes Spartanburg, Dorman, Gaffney, and Byrnes but will also add Hillcrest, Mauldin, and Riverside to the new region lineup. Also outside of region play Boiling Springs has renewed an old rivalry game against Chapman for the 2018 season. On the offensive side of the ball one of the major changes is that junior quarterback Aaron Thomas will be the new leader of the Bulldogs offense. At 6'2" 220lbs Thomas will be quite the physical presence that opposing defenses will have to account for, a fact that Coach Tate joked about at a recent media day. "If you were to go back a few years here at Boiling Springs a kid with Aaron's size would have been starting on the line," said Coach Tate, "We have all the confidence in the world in Aaron to be successful leading the offense this season." On the defensive side of the ball the major change is that former Limestone Head Coach Bobby James takes over as defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs. "I think the kids know Coach James background and that brings instant respect from the kids," said Coach Tate. "They see that he has been on the college level for sixteen or so years and they listen to him and believe in him." On the defensive side of the ball Coach James will have some pretty impressive athletes to work with as three members of the Bulldogs defense have already committed to play college football next season. Cornerback Storm Duck has committed to the University of North Carolina while Logan Billings and Michael McDowell have both committed to play at The Citadel next season. As part of the building project that will become the new Boiling Springs High School there is also $11 million that will go towards improvements to the athletics facilities at Boiling Springs. The most obvious changes that Bulldogs fans will see this coming year is on the field as Bulldog Stadium has gotten some upgrades during the offseason with new field turf and LED stadium lights. "I think this new turf is going to be something the community is going to be real excited about," said Coach Tate. The community will get its first look at the new field turf in action when the Bulldogs host Dutch Fork in Week 3 on September 7.
