ROEBUCK, SC - In the 45th meeting between Boiling Springs and Dorman on the gridiron, the matchup between the two teams was like an old fashioned football game as a game that saw two defenses go toe to toe was decided on a play with just seconds remaining as the Cavaliers defeated the Bulldogs 14-10 on Friday night.
For most of the night it was the Bulldogs that held a narrow lead as they held a 10-7 lead for 23 minutes and 38 seconds of the second half. "It was a tough way to lose a game," said Bulldogs head coach Matt Reel. "Our kids don't deserve that to happen because they worked really hard for that moment to go their way. We had a couple of miscues there at the end, we have to fix it. The kids battled so hard, and the effort was amazing all night. A lot of positives across the board except for picking up the win." Boiling Springs got the first score of the game as Bulldogs senior Amayjai Boyd intercepted a Dorman pass at their own 38-yard line before racing 62-yards down the left side line for a touchdown just three minutes into the game to take a 7-0 lead over the Cavaliers. Dorman tied the game on the first play of the second quarter when the Cavaliers Jarvis Pearson took a ball to the right side for a four-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7. With just over two minutes to go in the first half, the Bulldogs started a drive at their own 48-yard line that they marched to the Dorman 19-yard line before Boiling Springs kicker Michael Dueck hit a 36-yard field goal to take a 10-7 lead into halftime. After a back and forth third quarter, it was the Cavaliers that marched down to the Boiling Springs 32-yard line but a big interception by Bulldogs linebacker Campbell Johnson shut down the Dorman drive. The interception was just one of many plays Johnson made on the night as the linebacker led the team in tackles with 11.5 tackles to go along with the interception as the whole defense stepped up big all night. "They have grown up and done a great job for us," said Reel. "Campbell has stepped in as a junior and plays every down, he has really been a captain of our defense from the middle out." Dorman's Brannon Teamer ended the ensuing Bulldogs drive at the Cavaliers 19-yard line on an interception of his own. With just under four minutes to go in the game Dorman got the ball to the Boiling Springs four-yard line and on fourth down ran a fake field goal that was recognized by the Bulldogs as a big tackle by Kristion Thompson and Amayjai Boyd ended the drive at their own five-yard line. After trailing most of the game, Dorman took their first lead of the game with 22 seconds left when Enahjay Fowler ran the ball in behind the right side of the offensive line and found the endzone to take a 14-10 lead over the Bulldogs. Boiling Springs was able to work the ball to midfield on the next drive but the final pass of the game was knocked down ending the ball game with the Cavaliers taking the 14-10 victory. Bulldogs quarterback Lincoln Huskey ended the game going 15 of 29 for 201 yards while Kyle Patterson led the receivers with four receptions for 76 yards. RyShaun Morgan led the Bulldogs on the ground with five carries for 34 yards. Dorman quarterback Brice O'Neal was five of 13 for 32 yards while Nick Means led the Cavaliers on the ground with 21 carries for 116 yards. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - In front of a large home crowd the Boiling Springs community looked forward to celebrating a homecoming victory but Landon Stone and the Clover Blue Eagles had different ideas as they defeated the Bulldogs 36-21 on Friday night.
A game that was back and forth between the two teams turned into a Clover win after back-to-back special teams plays went against the Bulldogs in the third quarter. "When you write down mistakes on your play sheet and it takes up a whole column and you're playing good people, you have very little shot of winning," said Bulldogs head coach Matt Reel. "We had some good things going early but we got behind the chains and Clover's numbers 10 and 18 (Jayden Bryant and Brody Rowan) were better than we were. We had an opportunity to get a two-score lead and we didn't which allowed them to grind it out on us." Clover was led by their junior running back Landon Stone who rushed the ball 32 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Boiling Springs took the first lead of the game when junior running back Javen Chhim took an 11-yard run up the middle for a score to take a 7-0 lead. Chhim set up the scoring drive with a 54-yard run down the left side of the field earlier in the drive. The Blue Eagles cut the Bulldogs lead to 7-6 when Stone scored his first touchdown run of the game on a three-yard run over the right side of the line before the extra point was missed from a bad snap as the play was ended after a tackle by Bulldogs senior defensive lineman Calvin Jackson. Clover took their first lead of the game when senior quarterback Jaylon Hoover found senior wide receiver Issac Allen along the right side of the endzone to take a 13-7 lead with just over a minute to go in the half, it was a lead that they took into halftime. On the first play of scrimmage in the second half, Boiling Springs running back Javen Chhim struck again taking a handoff 79-yards down the left side to give the Bulldogs a 14-13 lead over the Blue Eagles. Chhim finished the night with nine rushes for 176 yards and two touchdowns while also adding four catches for 57 yards and a touchdown. "Javen has played well all year for us," said Reel. "The only thing he hasn't done is get in the endzone, but he has played really well for us. He turned plays that should have been just a few yards into bigger plays, and I have nothing but respect and admiration for that kid. He shows up and plays hard every day whether it's a game or practice. He's an unreal human being and I love him to death." Clover responded on their next drive with a 14-yard touchdown run by Stone to go up 20-14 over the Bulldogs with just under six minutes to go in the third quarter. At the three-minute mark of the third quarter, two big special teams plays by Clover changed the whole game in favor of the Blue Eagles. The run started with a 72-yard punt return by junior TJ McCluney down the right side of the field to push their lead to 26-14 over the Bulldogs. On the ensuing kickoff Clover kicked a sideline kickoff that wasn't fielded by any Bulldogs player but recovered at the 22-yard line by a Clover player. The recovery turned into points on a fourth and 22 play that was converted when Hoover found Allen for a 33-yard touchdown pass in the back of the endzone to go up 33-14 over the Bulldogs. Clover added to their lead when they connected on a 31-yard field goal to push the lead to 36-14 with just over four minutes left in the game. Boiling Springs added another score when junior quarterback Lincoln Huskey found Chhim down the right sideline for a 45-yard touchdown to put the Clover lead at 36-21 over the Bulldogs. Huskey finished the game going 12 of 20 passing for 118 yards and a touchdown while adding 20 yards rushing. Kyle Patterson led the Bulldogs in receiving with five catches for 49 yards. On defense the Bulldogs were led in tackles by senior JoJo Barrett who had eight tackles while junior Campbell Johnson (5.5), sophomore TJ Collins (5.5), senior Omar Cotton (5), and senior Calvin Jackson (5) all registered at least five tackles while Jackson added two sacks and Collins had a sack as well. Reel says his team will move past the loss and will look to get back on track next week in their region opener. "It's a new season next week and we don't have the luxury of playing any bad teams where you can still get a win on an off night," said Reel. "We don't have games like that on our schedule and we'll probably never have games like that on our schedule. That's the challenge I give to our kids to be great every night. I tell them every day to chase perfection and see where you end up at. In the games we've loss, we've had turnovers and big mistakes. There's things I have to get better at and our team has to get better at and when we eliminate the times we beat ourselves we have a chance of winning any game." Boiling Springs will return to action next Friday at Dorman in their first region matchup of the season as the Cavaliers fell to River Bluff 29-28 on Friday night. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - With the Boiling Springs community celebrating homecoming festivities this week, the Bulldogs volleyball team got their opportunity to join in the celebrations as they defeated region rival Spartanburg 3-1 on Thursday night. Boiling Springs will be back in action this weekend when they compete in a tournament at Greer Middle College on Saturday. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs boys' volleyball team got off to a slow start in their matchup against Clover but quickly responded for an impressive 3-0 win over the Blue Eagles for their tenth win of the 2023 season.
Bulldogs head coach Rachel Hyatt was proud of her team's performance and said the win was big for their postseason, as the 2023 season will be the first year the SCHSL will award a boys' volleyball state championship. "I told our guys that Clover is a scrappy team and if you play around it will come back to bite you," said Hyatt. "The guys responded as this was a super important win for us to improve to 10-3 and it puts us at the top of the region with Dorman. If we keep winning it will be us and Dorman taking the one and two seeds. Once we got on a run tonight, we didn't stop, and we were able to win in three sets for the first time this year." Boiling Springs got off to a 3-0 start in the first set behind a kill by sophomore Coleman Wheatley and a block from junior Tim Okhman. Clover fought back in the set though to take a 14-10 lead over the Bulldogs. With Clover leading 20-16, Boiling Springs took a timeout and began a comeback that saw them outscore the Blue Eagles 9-2 to take a 25-22 victory in the set. The run saw two kills from sophomore Dylan Booker and two ace serves from sophomore Antoine Murray. The final two scores of the set were scored by Wheatley as he had a spike kill that landed just inside the Clover backline and then serving up an ace serve in the set while taking a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set the Bulldogs got off to another hot start but this time they didn't let up as they went on to a 25-16 victory in the set. Okhman had a big service run in the set, as he went on a four-point service run that included two ace serves as he took the Bulldogs lead from 16-11 to 20-11 over the Blue Eagles as they continued that lead to take a 2-0 advantage in the match. Boiling Springs left little doubt in the third set as they jumped out to a quick 20-8 lead on their way to a 25-13 victory in the third set that was solidified on the final point when Dylan Booker spiked a ball that glanced off a Clover defender and landed out of bounds for the 3-0 win in the match. The Bulldogs frontline played extremely well and has been a solid point for them this whole season according to Hyatt. "Mark Zdanevich and Dylan Booker have been so important to us on the frontline," said Hyatt. "Dylan has been a great asset to us as he's a basketball player with a great vertical leap and can just jump out of the gym. You can always count on Mark to get a kill when he's on the frontline and has been a key guy for us all year. We also have Antoine Murray and Tim Okhman that are great middles and whenever someone challenges them it's probably going to get blocked." Mark Zdanevich led the Bulldogs with 14 kills while Dylan Booker was just one kill from double digits as he finished with nine of his own. Antoine Murray had five kills and two blocks while Tim Okhman added three kills, two blocks, and three ace serves on Monday night. "I'm very proud of the team," said Tate. "I hope we are peaking at the right time and I'm mostly proud because we have a new girl step up almost every event. If someone has a bad day, there's a teammate right behind them to help them out. I think we are starting to get more consistent and are looking forward to continuing to get better. We want to hopefully be competing in both the upper state and state tournaments." Boiling Springs was led by their number one golfer, eighth-grader Ellie Taylor who won the medalist honors after shooting a match low score of 37. She shot two shots better than Maddie Carroway from Dorman who finished with a score of 39 while teammate Sophia Leso was second on the Bulldogs scoring sheet with a score of 44 on Monday. The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday when they compete in the Lady Eagle tournament at the Links at Stoney Point Golf Club in Greenwood, SC. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - As the fall weather finally started to arrive in the Upstate of South Carolina, the Boiling Springs football team used a strong running game along with another good performance from their running back as they defeated Greer 31-14 in an out of region home matchup for the Bulldogs on Friday night.
The win marks the Bulldogs first home victory over the Yellow Jackets in the six overall matchups between the two teams. A week after struggling on the ground, the Boiling Springs offense ran for over 200 yards of offense and three touchdowns as junior running backs Javen Chhim and RyShaun Morgan combined for 208 yards while junior quarterback Lincoln Huskey added 31 yards on the ground along with three touchdowns. "We came out kind of flat to start the game but once we got that initial drive on offense it gave us a little confidence and our defense settled in and we got back to being ourselves," said Bulldogs head coach Matt Reel. "I'm really proud of our team's performance tonight and I thought our offensive line played well as we challenged them all week after a tough week last week." Greer got the first score of the night as quarterback Chris Hall found Chase Byrd on a 32-yard pass to the left side to take a 7-0 lead just minutes into the game. After the Greer score, the Bulldogs responded with 24 straight unanswered points over the next quarter of play to take their first lead of the game and extend their lead to 17 points. Boiling Springs responded on the next drive when the Bulldogs made it to the Greer 20-yard line before settling for a 37-yard field goal from junior kicker Michael Dueck that sailed through the uprights to cut the Greer lead to 7-3 just before the end of the first quarter. On the Bulldogs next drive, they took their first lead of the game just three minutes into the second quarter when quarterback Lincoln Huskey ran the ball over the left side of the offensive line for a seven-yard touchdown run to take a 10-7 lead over the Yellow Jackets. Huskey found the end zone on the ground again on their next drive as he ran the ball up the middle from five-yards out to take a 17-7 lead with just over two minutes to go in the half in a drive that was setup by the defense when senior defensive lineman Calvin Jackson recovered a Greer fumble at the Yellow Jackets 49-yard line. With time running out in the half, the Bulldogs got the ball one more time in the half and marched it down the field ending with a 22-yard touchdown pass to the right side to junior wide receiver Kyle Patterson, who made an amazing leaping catch, to take a 24-7 lead into halftime. Greer snapped the Bulldogs streak of unanswered points with just over a minute to go in the third quarter when junior running back LaDainnian Martin took a handoff eleven yards over the right side for a touchdown to cut the Boiling Springs lead to 24-14 over Greer. At the ten-minute mark of the fourth quarter, the Boiling Springs defense continued their strong play as they forced a fumble that was recovered by freshman Dennis Glenn, who finished the night with two tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery. The turnover turned into points just a minute later after some big runs from Chhim and Morgan, the drive was finished off on a one-yard touchdown run up the middle for Huskey, which was his third rushing touchdown of the night. Huskey finished the night going 11 of 18 for 177 yards and a touchdown through the air while rushing for 30 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Coach Reel said that his quarterback's performance wasn't a surprise as he's taken on a leadership role of the team. "Lincoln always takes on a leadership role and makes big plays, that's why he's our quarterback," said Reel. "You can go back to last year where we were in some battles, and he just stepped up and said it was his team and took over the game. He holds his teammates accountable when they're not playing up to the level that he is playing. When you have a quarterback who is one of the toughest guys on your team, both mentally and physically, you have the chance to be really good." Javen Chhim led the backfield attack rushing 18 times for 115 yards while fellow back RyShaun Morgan was close behind him with 14 rushes for 93 yards on Friday night. Sophomore wide receiver Eli Mobley had a big night catching four passes for 110 yards while junior wide receiver Kyle Patterson added three catches for 40 yards and a touchdown. Boiling Springs was led in tackles by senior JoJo Barrett who ended the game with six tackles, two which were for loss. The Bulldogs defensive backfield kept the Yellow Jackets offense from getting much through the air as they were limited to 112 yards thanks to their strong play as Jared Chinloy-Mickens led the group in tackles with four tackles (one for loss) and sophomore Jeremiah Favorite had two pass deflections. "On defense we had to make some adjustments against their wide receiver Chase Byrd, as he's a really good player," said Reel. "We put (Jeremiah) Favorite on him, and it allowed us to do some other things defensively. Our secondary really played a good game tonight." The defensive line had a strong game as well, including collecting two turnovers from both Calvin Jackson and Dennis Glenn, which is a group that Reel said is a key group to the defense's success. "The defensive line always plays well," said Reel. "Calvin had an unreal stat line against Hillcrest last week. He's developed as a vocal leader that holds guys accountable while also still playing great. I thought Dennis is starting to come into his own as he plays with a chip on his shoulder. Those guys on the defensive line are starting to have that family like feel as they're taking care of each other. For us to be successful we got to have those guys play well." LaDainnian Martin led the Greer offense with 95 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown while quarterback Chris Hall went six of 13 for 112 yards with a touchdown passing. The Bulldogs will look to make it two wins in a row at home next week when the host Clover for their final out of region game of the season as it will also be homecoming week for the Boiling Springs community. DUNCAN, SC - After falling to Byrnes in a tournament this weekend in the consolation match in the gold bracket, the Boiling Springs boys volleyball team made a return trip to Duncan looking to avenge their loss and done just that defeating Byrnes 3-1 on Monday night. "It feels good because we loss to those guys in a tournament match here this weekend," said Bulldogs head coach Rachel Hyatt. "I told our guys going into tonight that we knew we could beat them and our guys responded. The loss this weekend hit a soft spot for our guys and they came out here wanting to avenge that loss." After being tied at 12-12 the Bulldogs went on a 9-1 run to take a 21-13 lead behind an amazing play by senior outside hitter Mark Zdanevich who hit a shot facing away from the net that landed just inside the backline of Byrnes. Holding a four-point lead in the set, Boiling Springs went on a 3-0 run to put their lead at 24-17 as the run was highlighted by two ace serves from Zdanevich and a spike kill by Murray. Two points later, the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the match when a return by the Bulldogs glanced off a Byrnes player for a 25-18 win in the second set. In the third set Byrnes returned the favor to the Bulldogs as they jumped out to a fast start of their own taking an 8-0 lead before the Bulldogs scored their first point. Both teams battled hard throughout the fourth set as it took extra time to decide the set as both teams were tied at 25-25 before the Bulldogs forced the Rebels into back-to-back mistakes to win the set 27-25 and win the match 3-1. Boiling Springs was led on the court by Mark Zdanevich who had 15 kills to go along with five ace serves. Coach Hyatt said that she's not surprised by his strong performance and that he's a player that her team can count on when the game is on the line. "Mark is a guy we can always got to in tough situations," said Hyatt. "He's a leader on the court and our go to hitter as he can score from the front row or the back row. We can always count on him to close out a game when we need it." Senior Prosper Hawj also had a good night recording nine kills while Tim Okhman tied Zdanevich in ace serves as he also had five on Monday night. The Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday night as they travel to Mauldin to take on the Mavericks. GIRLS GOLF The Boiling Springs girls' golf team competed in the Lady Trojan tournament on Monday at the Rock Hill Country Club and finished with a team score of 384.
The tournament was won by Dorman who shot a team score of 325 and was just two shots ahead of second place Lexington. Boiling Springs will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Cherokee National Golf Club in Gaffney to take on the Indians in a nine-hole match. SIMPSONVILLE, SC - In a clash of two teams ranked in the top-eleven of high school teams in the 5A ranks of South Carolina, a defensive battle between the Boiling Springs Bulldogs and the Hillcrest Rams saw the home team Rams capture a 21-6 victory over the visiting Bulldogs.
Boiling Springs had their opportunities to take command of the game but just couldn't find the endzone because of mistakes but the defense kept them right in the game. Bulldogs head coach Matt Reel said the offensive struggles were on him as his team wasn't prepared to succeed against the Rams. "Our defense played well enough that we should have been in the game but offensively we didn't," said Reel. "That falls on me more than anybody else but we had probably the worst week of practice we've had this year during the week leading up to this game and today we saw the results of that as we preach that how we practice translates into how we play on gameday. I told the guys that this loss is on me because I didn't get them ready for this game offensively but we're going to get it fixed and be better next week." Hillcrest got the first score of the game on a fourth-and-one play at the Bulldogs 42-yard line when running back Avery McFadden took a direct snap over the right side of the line to put the Rams ahead 7-0 over the Bulldogs. Boiling Springs responded with just four minutes to go in the second quarter when quarterback Lincoln Huskey found wide receiver Tristian Horsey-Johnson on a post route to the middle of the field for a 37-yard touchdown to cut the Hillcrest lead to 7-6 after a missed extra point, which was the score as the two teams went into halftime. Hillcrest pushed their lead to 14-6 when McFadden struck again for a five-yard touchdown run over the left side of the line with just over two minutes to go in the third quarter. The final score of the game came with just under three minutes to go in the game when McFadden found the endzone for the third time when he took a screen pass from quarterback Kaleb Sutton 41-yards down the left sideline to push the lead to 21-6 over the Bulldogs. While the Bulldogs didn't get the win, they got a strong effort on the defensive side of the ball which was led by senior defensive lineman Calvin Jackson as he finished the game with seven tackles, two sacks, an interception, and a deflection. "Calvin is a kid that has been fun watching him grow," said Reel. "He's starting to become more of a leader and become more vocal. He's always made plays but it's fun seeing him grow into that leadership role and him having an impact on the other guys." Jackson wasn't the only player with a strong effort on defense as JoJo Barrett led the Bulldogs in tackles with eight tackles while Kohen Sloand ended the game with six tackles and a forced fumble. "Our defense played well and when you only give up 21 points in a high school game that should be enough to give you a chance to win," said Reel. "Our goal is to score at least 35 points every week and we had too many mistakes on offense tonight and that's just the way it is, we just didn't play well on offense." Avery McFadden combined for 131 yards and three touchdowns with 58 yards on the ground and 73 yards receiving for Hillcrest on Friday night. Boiling Springs was led on offense by quarterback Lincoln Huskey who threw for 171 yards and a touchdown on 16 of 38 passing. He also led the team in rushing going for 50 yards on nine attempts. Tristian Horsey-Johnson led the Bulldogs in receiving with four receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown. Eli Mobley had the most catches for the Bulldogs bringing in five receptions for 40 yards on Friday night. With the loss the Bulldogs record moves to 2-2 on the season and they will look to rebound next week at home as they host Greer who fell to Byrnes 49-13 on Friday night. |
