DUNCAN, SC - Due to the effects of the approaching storms expected from Hurrican Ian on the Upstate of South Carolina, the Region II-5A swim meet was moved up to Thursday at the Middle Tyger River YMCA where Boiling Springs had a very strong outing.
The Bulldogs saw their boys' team coming home with a third-place finish and the girls' team coming away with a fourth-place finish. "I'm so proud of the way every single swimmer performed at the region meet," said Bulldogs head coach Lanie Peden. "Because of the weather situation we were given less than 24 hours to prepare to swim our championship meet. Although it wasn't an ideal situation in maximizing a taper, the kids made the best of the situation and really came out to race." Morgan Greenlee picked up a second-place finish in the girls' 200y freestyle finishing just three seconds behind Anna Buchert from Spartanburg. She also added another second-place finish in the 100y butterfly with a time of 1:02.55. Reagan Shaw added a fourth-place finish in the girls' 500y freestyle event while Laney Moore added a fourth-place finish in the 100y backstroke and a fifth-place finish in the 200y individual medley event. The girls' 400y freestyle relay team added a third-place finish with a time of 3:58.13, which was less than a second from a second-place finish. The team is made up of swimmers Morgan Greenlee, Reagan Shaw, Camryn Duncan, and Laney Moore and they also added a fourth-place finish in the 200y medley relay. Garrett Watson won the region championship in the boys' 100y butterfly with a time of 55.67, which was over two seconds of the second-place finisher. He also added a second-place finish in the boys' 500y freestyle with a time 4:58.59. Miles Humphreys grabbed a second-place finish in the boys' 200y freestyle event finishing just behind Caeden Stratton from Byrnes. Ashton Threadgill added another second-place in the boys' 200y individual medley with a time of 2:03.15, less than three seconds behind Caleb Bailey from Dorman. He also added a second-place finish in 100y breaststroke with a time of 1:01.45 and finished just ahead of teammate Miles Humphreys who added a third-place finish in the event. The Boiling Springs boys' 400y freestyle relay team (Will Robinson, Garrett Watson, Miles Humphreys, and Ashton Threadgill) added a third-place finish in the event while also finishing third in the 200y medley relay, as they were just under a second from finishing in second place. Boiling Springs had six swimmers make the All-Region team on Thursday split evenly between both the boys' and girls' teams as Morgan Greenlee, Laney Moore, Reagan Shaw, Garrett Watson, Ashton Threadgill, and Miles Humphreys all were named to the All-Region II-5A team. The Bulldogs will find out next week which swimmers will make it to the 5A state meet on October 8th at the University of South Carolina Natatorium in Columbia, SC. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The number three ranked team in 5A, Dorman Cavaliers, traveled to Boiling Springs on Thursday night as the Bulldogs homecoming opponent and left with a 52-14 victory.
While the score wasn't what any Bulldog fan was hoping for, Coach Reel said that he sees the growth happening in his players and that the changes happening aren't overnight fixes but processes. "Our guys are learning each week what it's going to take to be at the level of these other guys and we all understand there's no quick fixes," said Bulldogs head coach Matt Reel. "A lot of these other teams have been lifting since seventh grade and our guys really just started in January. As a team we just got to keep showing up and believing in our process. We're seeing changes in these players that aren't reflected on the scoreboard and that people that just see them on Friday night aren't going to notice, especially in the growth in the players from day to day. If we keep showing up and putting in the work, we're going to be just fine." The Cavaliers fumbled on their first offensive drive of the night but on the next ensuing drives they didn't waste their opportunities scoring touchdowns on the next seven drives to take a 45-7 lead into halftime. The first two scores came on a 32-yard run over the right side and a nine-yard run up the middle by running back Demarius Foster. DJ Porter added the next two scores for the Cavaliers, one on a 48-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Hudson Talley followed by a one-yard touchdown run. TraVon Fernandez and Raequan Robinson added two more touchdown receptions from Talley, Fernandez from fifteen yards out and Robinson from seventy-four yards out. In between those two scores Kendell Lewis added a nine-yard rushing touchdown. Emo Fowler added another touchdown in the third quarter for the Cavaliers final score of the game on a twenty-yard touchdown pass from David Sorenson. With nine minutes to go in the second quarter Boiling Springs had cut the Dorman lead to 26-7 when quarterback Lincoln Huskey ran the ball for sixteen yards over the left side behind good blocks from the offensive line and wide receiver Spencer Eison. He also added another score in the fourth quarter when he ran the ball in from two yards out over the right side for the final score of the game putting the score at 52-14 in favor of the Cavaliers. Huskey ended his night going 11 of 23 for 111 yards while rushing for 52 yards on fifteen carries and two touchdowns. Spencer Eison and Jackson Cole led the Bulldogs in receptions with four catches each as Eison went for 63 yards and Cole went for 30 yards. On defense the Bulldogs were led by JoJo Barrett who had nine tackles while Calvin Jackson added six tackles including two and a half tackles for loss. Amayjai Boyd also added a forced fumble for the Bulldogs while making three tackles of his own. Hudson Talley led the Cavaliers offense throwing for 220 yards with three scores while Demarius Foster led the rushing attack with 83 yards on eight carries with two scores. Boiling Springs will return to action next Friday night when they travel to Byrnes for another region matchup as the Rebels fell to Spartanburg 36-23 on Thursday night. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - As kids growing up, we all have dreams of being on the big stage and for a group of District Two middle school kids they got just that opportunity as they got a taste of their own Friday night lights on Wednesday.
In district two, kids that end up at Boiling Springs High School attend either Boiling Springs Middle School or Rainbow Lake Middle School and on Wednesday night the two schools competed on a field they will one day soon share as teammates. It's the first time the two schools have competed against each other on the high school field in a few years and is something that Boiling Springs High School head football coach Matt Reel said he wanted to make happen so that the middle school kids can get a taste of playing where the guys they look up to now play. It's part of a larger goal that Reel setup when he took the job as he wanted to get the youth leagues and middle schools more involved with the high school program. "I think it's important for those kids to understand we want them here as Bulldogs and get them to look forward to being Bulldogs," said Reel. "The league they play in they see a lot of these nice places where teams play, and I think in the past I think that's why we've lost players to other schools. One of the first thing I told those middle school coaches when I got here is that I want those guys around here as much as possible and I want our youth leagues here as much as possible. We want those kids to look at this place this as their future and to be excited about that." Reel said that he can remember being young like those kids and being excited about the opportunity to compete where the guys he looked up to competed. "I know when I was growing up, I wanted to be at McDowell High School running around in the endzone like I was making plays on that field," said Reel. "Once I got to middle school we got to play on that field and as an elementary school kid our championships were on that field. I remember as I grew older it was always on my mind that I couldn't wait to play on that field." He said that he believes the more the younger kids get exposed to playing in big time games there, the more they'll be ready for games like that in the future. "Letting the kids get exposure to playing in a big-time stadium like this is great experience for them because you want them to get used to playing in those big-time situations before they get up here on Friday nights," said Reel. "Some people may think I'm crazy but I believe the more times you're exposed to these bigger games and bigger crowds the more you get used to them. I'm just excited for them to get to be a part of this and hopefully getting the chance to host these kids here every year." As for the kids, the coaches of both teams said that the opportunity for their kids to play their game in this environment was a special opportunity. "This is an awesome experience and the first time since I've been coach here that we've got this opportunity," said Boiling Springs Middle School head football coach Nathan Maynor. "We're thankful for the opportunity that Boiling Springs High School gave us to have this game here. The kids have never gotten the opportunity to see the Boiling Springs painted in the endzones with the giant Bulldog head in the middle. They were hyped up about the opportunity to play this game here and we had a big pep rally today at school, they're just excited for the opportunity to play for all those fans and with all the talent on the field today I think the future is bright for Boiling Springs High School football." Rainbow Lake head football coach Jamie Allen echoed the thoughts of his counterpart saying that his kids loved the opportunity of feeling like they were part of the high school. "Just the opportunity to get to play over here where they'll all play one day as high schoolers is special for them," said Allen. "Getting to be here under the lights with all the parents in the crowd it was a really good game between future Bulldogs tonight. We got to thank Coach Reel for inviting us to have the game here as the kids love the opportunity to feel like they're a part of the high school." As far as the games went with varsity players from the current team standing on both sidelines, both games were very competitive as in the seventh-grade game Boiling Springs Middle School won 22-14 while in the eighth-grade game Rainbow Lake Middle School won 22-16 and at the end of the day the future of Boiling Springs High School football came away with a victory. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs girls golf team returned to the course for the first time since last week to defeat fellow region school Dorman at Woodfin Ridge on Tuesday.
The match on Tuesday also marked the second straight medalist honors for Bulldogs senior golfer Madison Dixon, after she shot a match low score of 36 on Tuesday. It was Dixon's first time on the course since she won the individual honors at The Jack Invitational golf tournament in Seneca last week and is her fifth medalist honor in ten events this season. With the victory it marks the Bulldogs next to last home match at Woodfin Ridge as the season starts to race towards the postseason with the Bulldogs scheduled to compete in the Region II-5A tournament at River Falls on October 11th. With the weather looking to change for the worse with the arrival of Hurricane Ian later this week, the Bulldogs will return to the course one last time on Wednesday afternoon at River Falls golf course against Byrnes. Prior to the region tournament in two weeks though, the Bulldogs will have a busy upcoming week that starts with a match against Gaffney at Cherokee National on Monday. They will follow that up with a trip to play in the Smith Memorial Tournament at the Country Club of Newberry on Tuesday before hosting Chesnee and Mauldin at Woodfin Ridge on Wednesday night for the final home match of the season that will also be senior night for Bulldogs senior golfer Madison Dixon. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - After winning their first region game at Spartanburg on Thursday night, the Boiling Springs volleyball returned home on Tuesday night to pick up two impressive victories.
"I think the girls just needed some confidence and some wins against some good teams which we got tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Allyson Elliot. "I saw our girls face some adversity tonight and we battled back from it as a team. We were able to stay united and stay focused which was exciting to see." Boiling Springs started the night off against Spartanburg Christian Academy, the six-time defending SCISA 2A state champions, and was able to come away with a 2-1 victory over the Warriors. In the first set the Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 and were still behind 9-7 when Karson Browning got the Bulldogs to within one at 9-8 and Charlotte Hutchins tied it at 9-9 with a kill that deflected off a Warriors defender. Hutchins then went on a three-point service run that changed the momentum in the set as Browning added a kill in the run to push the Boiling Springs lead to 12-9. The Bulldogs kept the momentum going as they held a 19-14 lead and outscored the Warriors 6-3 over the final nine points to take a 25-17 victory in the first set as Hutchins scored the final point on a kill that deflected off a Warriors player at the net. Over the final nine points the Bulldogs got kills from Hutchins, Browning, Makayla Furrey, and Lauren Kusterer. In the second set, the defending state champions Warriors showed that they weren't just going to go away as they held a 19-18 lead in the set and went on to outscore the Bulldogs 6-1 over the final seven points to claim a 25-19 victory in the set to tie the match at 1-1 in a best of three. The third set was a close one as both teams exchanged the lead early but the Warriors were able to get a 17-13 lead over the Bulldogs. At that point, Bulldogs senior Cloe Wood took control of the match as she scored four of the Bulldogs next seven points including a kill to tie the set at 17-17 on the way to Boiling Springs taking a 20-18 lead. With the Bulldogs leading 23-22, Makayla Furrey and Karson Browning picked up the final two points of the set with Browning spiking a ball that deflected off a Warriors player for the final point and a 25-22 victory in the set plus a 2-1 victory in the match. The Bulldogs saw Cloe Wood register 10 kills to lead the team while adding 21 digs and four blocks as Karson Browning also added five kills, two blocks, and an ace serve. Morgan Hammett led the Bulldogs in the match in digs with 31 while Makayla Furrey added 22 digs while leading in assists with 21, and three kills. In the match against Landrum, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first set on their way to a 25-22 which was sealed when Browning had a kill off a Cardinals defender. The second set saw the Bulldogs jump out to a 8-7 lead and pushed that lead to 12-7 on a four-point service run by Makayla Furrey that included a kill by Charlotte Hutchins and a back to the net point by Karson Browning that landed in the middle of the Landrum defense. Cloe Wood ended the set and the match with a spike kill to the middle of the Cardinals defense to give the Bulldogs a 25-17 set win and a 2-0 match victory. Morgan Hammett added to her digs total on the night to 49 as she recorded 18 digs in the match against the Cardinals. Makayla Furrey added to her assists total adding 19 against the Cardinals for a total of 40 on the night. Cloe Wood and Karson Browning combined for 18 kills against Landrum including an ace serve from Browning. In the match between Spartanburg Christian Academy and Landrum, the Warriors captured a 2-0 victory in the match. The Warriors won the first set 25-16 before winning the second set by the same score. In the second set, they trailed Landrum 9-8 before outscoring the Cardinals 16-8 over the next 24 points. Boiling Springs will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Dorman for another region matchup. CLOVER, SC - Despite a strong defensive effort from the Bulldogs for three quarters, a big fourth quarter offensive outburst over the final ten minutes of the game by Clover gave the Blue Eagles a 26-0 victory over the visiting Bulldogs on Friday night.
"Our defense done a great job, both players and coaches, of doing what we've asked them to do," said Bulldogs head coach Matt Reel. "We're struggling some offensively right now but we have to do a better job about finding ways for our guys to be successful. Our defense done as well as we could ask of them for a long time tonight. We have a lot of guys banged up and guys are stepping in and playing their butts off which for me means a lot. We're just going to keep fighting and keep getting better." The first points of the game came just over a minute into the contest as Clover defensive back Nashon Suchanek snatched a deflected Boiling Springs pass out of the air at the Bulldogs six-yard line and returned it for a 7-0 lead. Both teams were held scoreless from that point all the way through the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Blue Eagles outscored the Bulldogs 19-0 that included a safety and a field goal from Haven Maddox sandwiched between two touchdowns. Clover got a touchdown pass from quarterback Jaylon Hoover who found Jaime Hunter on a 17-yard touchdown pass to the right corner of the endzone to start the fourth quarter. They also added a 28-yard touchdown run from DeMarco Evans with just over a minute to go in the game to push their lead to 26-0 over the Bulldogs. With the loss the Bulldogs end their non-region play with a 2-4 record and will now turn their focus to region play and Coach Reel understands the competition that his team will soon be competing against. "We've got to get guys healthy heading into region play," said Reel. "There's no doubt about how good our region is as they're all ranked in the top ten of the state. They're all well coached with great players and we're working to get to that point. I'm excited for our guys to compete the next four weeks to see where we're at versus the best in the state and I want our kids to keep being confident in themselves." DeMarco Evans led Clover's rushing attack with 108 yards on twelve carries with a touchdown while Jaylon Hoover led them in the air with 170 yards passing and a score. Defensive end Jameilion Miller led the Boiling Springs defense with five tackles including two sacks while Calvin Jackson, JoJo Barrett, Spencer Eison, and Luke Compton all combined for five tackles for loss including a sack by Jackson. Boiling Springs will start off their region play on Friday night when they host Dorman for homecoming. DUNCAN, SC - The Boiling Springs swim team used held their final home meet of the year at the Middle Tyger River YMCA to honor their five senior swimmers on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs honored seniors Garrett Watson, Morgan Greenlee, Sarah McMahon, Camryn Duncan, and Ashton Threadgill as all have accomplished a lot while competing for Boiling Springs. "We had a great night at the pool as we were able to celebrate our seniors with some great swims," said Bulldogs head coach Lanie Peden. "The kids really came out tonight to race. The team as a whole was all about supporting each other tonight and that really makes a difference." In the meet the Boiling Springs girls' team came away with victories over both Greer Middle College and Oakbrook while the boys' team came away with a victory over Oakbrook while falling just short against Greer Middle College. "It's always fun to swim against Oakbrook as they have a great team and we have a long history of meets together," said Peden. "Greer Middle College has grown by leaps and bounds and have really improved since we swam against them a few years ago. They are a very competitive group and I'm proud of how our girls came away with a victory." Morgan Greenlee got the first win of the night for the Bulldogs with a victory in the 200y freestyle event with a time of 2:10.14 and was followed in second place by fellow senior Sarah McMahon. Laney Moore added another victory for the Bulldogs in the girls 200y individual medley with a time of 2:25.11, which was twelve seconds ahead of second place. She also won the 500y freestyle event with a time of 5:59.03, which was over thirty seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer. Reagan Shaw picked up victory for Boiling Springs in the girls 50y freestyle event with a time of 27.51 finishing almost a second ahead of the second-place finisher. She also finished in second place of the 100y freestyle event getting beat to the wall by less than three tenths of a second. Both the boys' and girls' teams finished out the meet with victories in the 400y freestyle relay events as the boys' team (Will Robinson, Garrett Watson, Miles Humphreys, and Ashton Threadgill) won in a time of 3:39.42, which was thirty seconds ahead of second place. The girls' team (Reagan Shaw, Laney Moore, Camryn Duncan, and Morgan Greenlee) won their event with a time of 4:13.02, which was over thirty seconds ahead of second place. Boiling Springs will next compete at the Region II-5A meet that is scheduled to be held on October 1st at Converse College. SENECA, SC - The Boiling Springs girls golf team went to Seneca on Thursday to compete in The Jack Invitational tournament at Cross Creek Plantation where senior golfer Madison Dixon won the individual tournament.
Dixon fired a tournament low score of 74 at the course that was two shots better than the second-place golfers Ella Kate Barrett of Aynor, Natalie Turner of Pickens, and Ansley Bryson from Seneca. She was joined on the All-Tournament team by the three previous golfers, who all tied for second place, along with Olivia Roberts from Chesnee who tied for fifth place with Dorman's Abby Franks after both shot a score of 78 on Tuesday. As a team Boiling Springs the Bulldogs finished in fifth place with a score of 390 just behind fellow district school Chesnee who finished in fourth place with a score of 357. Dorman won the team side of the tournament with a score of 323 followed by Pickens (330) and Seneca (336). The Boiling Springs girls' team will be back in action on Thursday when they play Spartanburg in match play at the Country Club of Spartanburg. Dixon will also be competing in a two-day tournament this weekend at the High School Invitational at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, SC. GREER, SC - The Boiling Springs football team walked into Dooley Field having never beaten Greer in four matchups between the two teams, though they hadn't played each other since 1979, but when the clock hit zero on Friday night the Bulldogs were returning to Boiling Springs with a 27-25 victory.
"The biggest thing about this win is it helps show that the work these guys have been putting in is paying off," said Bulldogs head coach Matt Reel. "When they see the results on the field it solidifies that what we're doing is working. I want these kids to get used to enjoying winning because once you do it's infectious. Our guys overcome adversity tonight and as a coach that's what you love to see from your team, and it makes you proud." While the game went the way of the Bulldogs, it didn't necessarily look that way early as Greer took an early 6-0 lead when Yellow Jackets running back Bryce Foster ran the ball in from four yards out with just over eight minutes to go in the first quarter. The extra point was blocked which would prove to be a key development at the end of the game. After being forced into a punting situation on Boiling Springs's first offensive possession it looked like the momentum was heading for the Yellow Jackets but on the punt return Bulldogs Kohen Sloand forced a fumble that was recovered by teammate Luke Compton who returned the ball forty yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 6-6, as the Bulldogs extra point was also blocked. On the Bulldogs next offensive possession, the Bulldogs went on a 64-yard drive that included a twenty-eight yard run by running back Kam Williams and a twelve-yard run by quarterback Lincoln Huskey. The drive was capped when wide receiver Zy Landrum took a reverse over the right side for a four-yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs up 13-6 with just over a minute left in the first quarter. The first quarter ended with Bulldogs defensive end Calvin Jackson sacking the Greer quarterback and started the second with him tackling the Greer running back for a loss before an incomplete pass gave the Boiling Springs offense the ball again. Bulldogs running back Tylek Smith, who came on for Williams after an injury, took the second snap of the drive fourteen yards before Huskey took off for 23-yards three plays later to put the Bulldogs at the Greer thirteen-yard line. On the next play, Huskey found wide receiver Spencer Eison on a 13-yard touchdown pass to give Boiling Springs a 20-6 lead with just over nine minutes to go in the game. Smith took over the lead back role the rest of the game and ran the ball for 37 yards on 14 carries and Reel said he was proud of how Smith stepped up after being moved around the field throughout the summer and fall. "Tyleek has been back and forth between different positions and it could have been easy for him to get down," said Reel. "Instead of getting down though he's done a great job of being confident and buying in to what we're doing. He waited his turn and done a great job tonight, he's probably one of the big reasons we won tonight." Greer added two touchdowns in the last nine minutes of the second quarter as Foster ran the ball in from two yards out and fellow running back Chris Hall ran the ball in from four yards out with less than two minutes until halftime to put the Boiling Springs lead at 20-19, as the Bulldogs blocked their second extra point of the game. Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter setting up a big fourth quarter battle. Just three plays into the fourth quarter, Bulldogs quarterback Lincoln Huskey found wide receiver Spencer Eison for his second touchdown of the night, this time on a 17-yard touchdown pass that saw Eison reach over a Greer defender and get his feet inbounds to take a 27-19 lead. With four minutes to go in the game on a fourth and three play from the three-yard line Greer quarterback Josh Runion found Chase Byrd for a touchdown to put the game at 27-25 and with the two blocked extra points it forced the Yellow Jackets to go for two. On the two-point play, Boiling Springs linebacker JoJo Barrett met the Greer running back three yards in the backfield and was soon joined by the rest of his teammates to deny the Yellow Jackets the two points. With just over a minute to go, Greer had one last chance and on third and nine they threw a pass that was intercepted by defensive back Spencer Eison to seal the victory for the Bulldogs. Eison said he knew when he saw the pass thrown that it was his opportunity to step up and make a play. "I just saw the ball in the air and knew someone had to make a play," said Eison. "It just so happened the ball came to me and it sealed the game. It's not about me though as it's about this team and I love seeing these guys celebrating this win as it's a complete team victory." Boiling Springs was led offensively by sophomore quarterback Lincoln Huskey who went 13 of 21 for 126 yards with two touchdowns while also adding 59 yards on the ground on nine carries. Huskey made clutch plays down the stretch and Coach Reel said it was something he had challenged his young quarterback to do. "Lincoln has really stepped up and we challenged him to do that," said Reel. "If you're going be the quarterback you have to be able to stare adversity down. We feed off each other and I told him to go find a way to win a football game and after the game he told me 'Coach I found a way to win a football game.' That's what it's all about." Zy Landrum led the Bulldogs in reception yards with 65 yards on seven catches while Spencer Eison had two touchdowns on three catches for 37 yards. The Bulldogs defense had another stellar performance on Friday night as linebackers JoJo Barrett and Hudson Wilson combined for 15.5 tackles. They also got strong nights from their defensive ends as Jameilion Miller and Calvin Jackson combined for 5.5 tackles including three for loss and a sack. "Our defense done a great job of making adjustments at halftime and just trusting each other," said Reel. "In the second half our guys just done a great job of doing their job and trusting their teammates to do theirs. I thought Hudson had one of his best games all year long just getting his read keys and doing his job. That defensive group has a chance to be special when they do their jobs." Boiling Springs will look to keep their winning ways going next week as they travel to Clover on Friday night to face the Blue Eagles who fell to Dorman 37-23 this past Friday. ROCK HILL, SC - The Boiling Springs girls' golf team traveled to Rock Hill for their first tournament in a week and came away with a top five finish at the Lady Trojan Invitational at Rock Hill Country Club on Monday.
The Bulldogs finished in fourth place out of ten teams at the event, on a tough day for every team on the course, after shooting a team score of 386. Catawba Ridge won the tournament with a score of 337 and Lexington finished in second place with a team score of 346 on Monday while Nation Ford finished just ahead of the Bulldogs in third place with a team score of 372. The rest of the field consisted of Clover, Fort Mill, Northwestern, York, South Pointe, and Rock Hill. Boiling Springs was led by senior golfer Madison Dixon who shot a team low score of 79, which was just two shots behind the individual winner Eileen Zeoli from Catawba Ridge who won the medalist honors with a score of 77 on Monday. The Bulldogs will be back on the course tomorrow, September 13th, when they travel to Greenwood for the Lady Eagle Tournament at the Links at Stoney Point. |
