With a 46-19 victory over Riverside on Tuesday night the Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs held on to their second place spot in Region II-5A and set up a key region matchup against first place Dorman on Friday night.
"I was proud of how the girls played tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. "It makes me really excited about Friday night against Dorman." The Bulldogs defense was key to their victory on Tuesday night as they held Riverside to only eight points through the first three quarters, in fact holding the Warriors to a total of only two points over the second and third quarters, On offense Boiling Springs got double digit scoring nights from junior Arissa Edwards who scored twelve points for the Bulldogs and got another key performance from senior Amaya Richardson who led the Bulldogs with thirteen points on Tuesday night. The offensive output is just another impressive performance this season from Richardson who Coach Lytle said has been very important to the Bulldogs run in region play this year. "Amaya has been on fire for us this year," said Coach Lytle. "She played another key role tonight and she will key for us in the game on Friday night." Not long after the Bulldogs victory they got word that region leader Dorman had suffered their first region loss of the season against Hillcrest on Tuesday night putting the Bulldogs just two games behind the Cavaliers in the region standings. The victory improves the Lady Bulldogs record to 13-6 overall and 8-3 in region play while the Cavaliers sit at 10-1 in region play. The Bulldogs know that they will need help down the stretch to make the region race interesting but Boiling Springs knows for anything else to matter that they will have to take care of what they can control on Friday night. "It's going to be a big region game on Friday night," said Coach Lytle. "We just found out about Hillcrest beating Dorman and if we could grab a victory over Dorman at their place on Friday night it would be a huge win for this program." In the boys game the Boiling Springs offense could never find it's rhythm against a tough Riverside defense as they fell to the Warriors 50-26 on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs were led on offense by Zach Baldinelli and Trayson Fowler who both scored seven points a piece against the Warriors. Both Boiling Springs teams will travel to Dorman on Friday night before finishing up regular season play next week with a home game against Hillcrest on Tuesday night and a road contest against Gaffney next Friday. It didn’t take long for Boiling Springs’ Zach Baldinelli to reach a career milestone on Tuesday night as he passed the one-thousand career point mark with his first shot of the game in a 74-63 victory over Spartanburg. Baldinelli entered the game with 999 career points and passed that mark just thirty seconds into the game, a coincidence that he was very happy to take care of so early in the game, when he hit a three-pointer from the top of the key. “I was really glad to accomplish it early to get it off of mind,” said Boiling Springs senior Zach Baldinelli who ended up with seventeen points for the Bulldogs on Tuesday night. “It’s an awesome feat because we play against some of the best kids in the state. I also have great teammates that have helped me get here as most of those points came off assists from them." "To watch a kid that has devoted so much time to basketball was such a special moment," said Boiling Springs head coach Hal McManus. "I'm so proud of him to get that milestone because it's a milestone not a lot of people can say they have achieved. He really works hard and any honor he gets he truly deserves." The Bulldogs wanted to make sure that Baldinelli's accomplishment wasn't the only thing they had to celebrate on Tuesday night as they jumped out to an early 22-16 lead at the end of first quarter behind six points a piece from Baldinelli and fellow senior Chance Guest. Boiling Springs was able to fend off a tough Spartanburg rally to claim a 35-31 halftime lead despite an impressive performance by Vikings senior Sean Jenkins who scored nineteen of his game high thirty-one points in the first half. Boiling Springs got off to a slow start in the second half as Spartanburg was able to claim an early lead in the third quarter but soon the Bulldogs got back on track thanks in part to the presence in the paint of junior Reggie Crocker who scored fifteen points with nine rebounds and one block on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs were able to reclaim the lead on a layup by Crocker with just over four minutes to go in the quarter and rode that momentum to a 49-45 lead at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs were able to maintain the lead behind clutch free throw shooting as Boiling Springs shooters went thirteen of sixteen from the free throw line with one of the biggest contributors to that being senior JB Kennedy who went nine of ten from the line and scored eleven of his seventeen points in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs had four players score in double figures on Tuesday night as Baldinelli and Kennedy led the team with seventeen points a piece while Crocker added fifteen points and Chance Guest scored eleven points. "We always have tough games with those guys," said Coach McManus. "I think there in the middle of the third we weren't playing very tough and letting them dictate everything but I think from that point on our kids really stepped up and flipped the script." The Bulldogs with the victory improve to 4-5 in region play and will host Mauldin on Friday night. Clutch Shooting Helps Lead Lady Bulldogs to VictoryThe Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs came into Tuesday night looking to rebound from some recent losses and did just that as they captured a 51-49 victory over Spartanburg.
"We had a rough few games but it was really nice to get back home and get a victory," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. The Bulldogs fell behind in the second quarter but were able to tie the game up right before halftime when Arissa Edwards hit two of three free throws to tie the game at 27-27 when the halftime buzzer echoed through the gym. As the game went back and forth in the second half and both teams traded the lead, the Bulldogs got clutch three pointers in the second half from sophomore Laisha Labra who scored nine of her game high fourteen points from behind the three point line in the second half. "After talking with my assistant coach, Coach Kennedy, he told me because of Laisha's play the last few weeks we have to get her on the court," said Coach Lytle. "She is only a sophomore and really become a huge asset to our team." Boiling Springs also got a great shooting night from senior Caroline Reese who scored twelve points on Tuesday night for the Bulldogs, with all twelve of the points coming from behind the three point line. Arissa Edwards also added eleven points in the Bulldogs victory. Boiling Springs will return to play on Friday night as they host Mauldin in another key region matchup. While Hillcrest fought back in the second quarter the Bulldogs still claimed a nine point lead at halftime as they led 27-18 at the end of the half. In the second half the Bulldogs held on to their lead as they held Hillcrest to twenty-one points in the half and only allowed them to score eight points in the fourth quarter. Boiling Springs was clutch from the free throw line in the second half as the Bulldogs went eleven of fourteen from the free throw line in the second half. The Bulldogs also got a strong fourth quarter from senior JB Kennedy who scored seven of his twelve points in the fourth quarter. On Tuesday night the Bulldogs were led in scoring by Zach Baldinelli who led Boiling Springs with fourteen points while Reggie Crocker and JB Kennedy both scored twelve points a piece. The Bulldogs will also start their second half of region play on Friday night as they travel to Byrnes. In region II-5A no victories come easy and this basketball season has been no different as Boiling Springs grabbed a hard fought 51-45 victory over Gaffney on Friday night. "We've played Gaffney, Spartanburg, and Dorman all this week and that's a tough schedule in just about any sport," said Boiling Springs head coach Hal McManus. "Our team has gotten beaten up this week and I'm proud of how our guys gutted out a victory tonight." The Bulldogs came out quick on Friday night as they jumped out to a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter behind five points from senior Zach Baldinelli. In the second quarter the grueling week the Bulldogs had been through could be seen as Gaffney was able to outscore Boiling Springs 20-11 in the second quarter and grab a 31-30 halftime lead. The Indians were led in the second quarter by junior Domonique Davidson who scored seven of his ten points in the second quarter. In the third quarter both teams struggled to find the basket as both teams combined to score only fourteen points as the Indians outscored Boiling Springs 8-6 in the quarter to claim a 39-36 lead. Boiling Springs claimed their first lead of the second half when sophomore Corey Johnson stole a Gaffney pass with just over five minutes to go in the fourth quarter and grabbed a 44-43 lead. Over the last five minutes of the game the Bulldogs outscored Gaffney 7-2 to grab a very important region victory. In a low scoring game the Bulldogs got an impressive performance around the glass from junior Reggie Crocker who scored eight points but also recorded twelve rebounds and six blocks for Boiling Springs on Friday night. "I thought Reggie was really huge controlling the middle tonight and he gave us that element you need in this league," said Coach McManus. "Pierre Gentry and Trayson Fowler also had really big games for us tonight on the boards." The Bulldogs scoring was very spread out on Friday night as senior Pierre Gentry led the team with nine points while JB Kennedy, Chance Guest, Crocker, and Baldinelli all finished the game with eight points a piece. Gaffney was led on Friday night by Undre Lindsay who led all scorers on the night with 20 points. The Bulldogs trailed the Indians 26-19 at halftime before the Indians were able to go on a run to start the second half. Boiling Springs was able to cut the Gaffney lead to six with just over three minutes to go in the game but that was as close as they could get as Gaffney was able to seal the victory from the free throw line down the stretch. Boiling Springs will travel to Hillcrest on Tuesday night before starting their second trip through region play on Friday at Byrnes. Coming off a holiday break that saw them capture the Bobcat Classic championship in Bluffton, the Boiling Springs basketball team got revenge for a playoff to Riverside last season by defeating the Warriors 55-48 on Friday night in a region II-5A matchup. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 6-0 lead to start the game only to see Riverside storm back to grab an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter continued to go the Warriors way as they outscored the Bulldogs 14-7 over the quarter to grab a 25-17 halftime lead. In the second half the Bulldogs played like a new team as they rallied in the third quarter outscoring the Warriors 19-9 over the period behind some hot shooting from senior JB Kennedy who scored ten of his game high fifteen points in the third quarter. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-3 first quarter lead behind a great scoring output from senior Amaya Richardson who scored ten of her game high eighteen points in the first quarter. "Amaya has really been playing well for us," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. "She averaged twenty points a game for us in the Christmas tournament and it has just really clicked for her." The Bulldogs got an impressive performance on the defensive side of the ball on Friday night as they held the Warriors to only nine points a piece in each half and at one point in the first half didn't allow Riverside to score over a ten minute period. Coach Lytle said that defense had been a point of focus for the Bulldogs lately. "We wanted to see our defense bring some pressure," said Coach Lytle. "We have a big matchup against Dorman on Tuesday night and I wanted to see what kind of defensive pressure our team was capable of putting on another team." Boiling Springs with the win remains undefeated in region with three region games next week. The key matchup for the Bulldogs will be on Tuesday night as they host Dorman. "It's going to be a great matchup on Tuesday night," said Coach Lytle. "I think both teams have great guard play but I think if we have Amaya play like she has recently we may just have an advantage." |
