The Chesnee Eagles fell just short of winning the state championship in 3A on Tuesday while the Boiling Springs Bulldogs recovered from a tough round on Monday to finish seventh in the 5A state championship.
Chesnee finished the 3A state tournament in second place behind state Bishop England who won the state championship on Tuesday. The Eagles finished the two day tournament with an overall score of 627 which put them fifteen shots back of Bishop England (612). Garrett Cooper claimed All-State honors after finishing the tournament with a score of 150. Chesnee coach Andy Pitt was very pleased with his team's performance despite just falling short of their ultimate goal. "We had a good run with these guys," said Coach Pitt. "They have all poured a lot of themselves into this team. Although it hurts it's a big accomplishment to finish as the State runner-ups." Boiling Springs finished Monday in tenth place but came out and improved their score by fourteen shots on Tuesday to finish the tournament in seventh place with an overall team score of 626. The Bulldogs got impressive performances on Tuesday by Andrew Gregory who shot one over par and Zach Phillips who shot two over par on Tuesday. Gregory (151) finished the tournament tied for fifteenth and Phillips (154) finished tied for twenty-first. Rock Hill won the 5A championship by shooting an overall 585 and winning by twenty-six shots over second place teams Dorman and Mauldin (611). On Monday afternoon the Boiling Springs and Chesnee golf teams competed in the 5A and 3A Upperstate tournaments with both teams coming away with finishes that qualified them for the State Championship tournaments next week.
Boiling Springs competed in the 5A tournament that was held at their home course of Woodfin Ridge and came away with a performance that tied them for sixth with Wade Hampton while shooting a team score of 318. The Bulldogs finished the 5A Upperstate tournament behind Upperstate champion Rock Hill (283) and county foes Dorman and Spartanburg. Boiling Springs will look to win their sixth state golf championship in seven years starting next Tuesday at Lexington Country Club in Lexington, SC. Chesnee competed in the 3A tournament on Monday at Three Pines Golf Course in Woodruff, SC and walked away with a second place finish to the host Wolverines. The Eagles shot a combined team score of 304 and was eight shots behind the Wolverines for the Upperstate Championship but were ahead of county foes Broome (342) and Chapman (349) who also qualified for the state championship next week. The 3A state championship will start next Monday at the Camden Country Club in Camden, SC. Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt was pleased with his team's performance on Monday with it being their first look at the course. "It was tough not seeing the course before today but I was proud of our guys," said Coach Pitt. "We didn't have our best stuff and still managed to get around pretty good. I think today's outcome will fuel us moving forward and it was great seeing our other region teams, Broome and Chapman, also qualify." Both state tournaments will be two day events with the 3A tournament starting on Monday May 13 and the 5A tournament starting on Tuesday May 14. Going into Wednesday night the Boiling Springs softball team knew they had a tough hill to climb to win the District Championship but they were just half an inning from taking care of that first step before ultimately falling to Fort Mill 5-2 in game one and ending the Bulldogs season.
Boiling Springs fell behind 1-0 in the second inning as Emma Tisdale tripled and then came home on an Emily Harris single to right field. Both teams had opportunities to score throughout the game but impressive pitching from the Bulldogs Olivia Hall and Fort Mill's Peyton Lemire along with great play from their defenses kept the game close. In the top of the sixth inning the Bulldogs were finally able to get on the scoreboard as Ragan Bristol reached base on a Fort Mill error and later moved up to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Grace McKinney. Bre McAbee, who came on to run for Bristol, was able to score on a single to right field by Hall to tie the game at 1-1 and giving the Bulldogs their first score against Lemire in two games over the last week. Alexis McFalls, who came on to run for Breanna Stanley who reached base on a single, would make the score 2-1 in favor of the Bulldogs when Abbie Threatt hit a single to right field. The Bulldogs kept the lead at the end of the sixth inning thanks in part to a good defensive play by Hall who threw out a Fort Mill base runner at third base after the runner advanced too far towards the plate and Boiling Springs shortstop Jaycie Osment was able to get the tag on the runner to preserve the Bulldogs lead. After being unable to extend the lead in the top half of the seventh inning the Bulldogs went into the bottom half of the inning three outs from a chance to play a second game. The Yellow Jackets were able to get two runners on with two outs and were still trailing by one when Reagan Smith hit a double to tie the game at 2-2. On the very next at-bat and runners on second and third Fort Mill's Tisdale was able to take an outside pitch and put it over the right centerfield fence for a walk-off homerun and giving the Yellow Jackets a 5-2 victory. With the victory Fort Mill will advance to the Upper State championship round where they will face Hillcrest who defeated Dorman on Wednesday. Boiling Springs with the loss will say goodbye to seniors Zoey Stewart and Grace McKinney but will be looking to build on their success from this year next season as they will return eleven underclassmen from this year's team into the 2020 season. |
