BOILING SPRINGS, SC - After defeating Chapin 11-4 on the road Monday night, the Boiling Springs baseball team backed up their performance with a 9-3 home victory over the Eagles to improve to 8-2 on the season Tuesday night. "I'm really proud of how we've been swinging the bat the last two games as we've scored twenty runs combined," said Bulldogs head coach Jeff Lipscomb. "We've come alive with the bats and we want to keep that going especially as we head into region play next week." The Bulldogs got another strong night on the mound from starting pitcher Tristan Smith who pitched five innings while striking out thirteen batters and only allowing one run. "He's getting better as the season goes along," said Lipscomb. "At times we think he might be struggling or not doing exactly what we saw from him last year but then you look, and he has thirteen strikeouts while only allowing one run over five innings. At the end of the day, we're going to be in every game that he pitches." Luke Compton, who singled to start off the Bulldogs side of the first inning, gave Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead when he advanced to third on a single to left field by Hudson Wilson before scoring on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Davis Starnes. The only blemish to Smith's pitching night came in the top of the second inning when JP Hornick hit a homerun to left centerfield on a curveball to tie the game at 1-1. Smith rebounded by striking out seven of the next nine batters he faced while also picking off an Eagles runner to keep Chapin scoreless in the third and fourth innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning with one out, Ashton Smith smacked a double to left centerfield that hit at the base of the wall before reaching third base on a wild pitch and coming home to score on a double steal to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Hudson Wilson singled to centerfield in the bottom of the fifth inning with one out before advancing to second base on a single to left field by Tristan Smith. Wilson made the Boiling Springs lead 3-1 when he came home to score on a double to left field by Davis Starnes putting Smith and Starnes at second and third base. With two runners on and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs Ashton Smith continued his strong night at the plate by crushing a three-run homerun that cleared the rightfield scoreboard landing in the school's parking lot. According to Lipscomb, the homerun is one of the biggest homeruns he's ever seen hit by a Boiling Springs baseball player. "That's the farthest hit homerun I've seen hit at a Boiling Springs field, either here or at the old field," said Lipscomb. "That ball was crushed and it was big for us because that lead made everything a lot easier for us. I'm glad for Ashton too because he's always in the cages before and after practices working on his swing and to see him reap the benefit of that hard work is great to see. I'm really proud of him." Chapin looked to cut into the Boiling Springs lead in the top of the sixth inning as they added two runs but as they tried to add a third run a great relay from left field allowed Bulldogs catcher Brent Fowler to put a tag on the Eagles runner for the third out of the inning and keep the Boiling Springs lead at 6-3. The Bulldogs offense got back to work in the bottom of the sixth inning as Luke Compton worked a walk before scoring from first base on a Chapin error that allowed Hudson Wilson to reach second base. Wilson made the Boiling Springs lead 8-3 when he scored on a double to leftfield by Tristan Smith but Smith was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple. Davis Starnes reached base by working a walk and after two more walks to reach third base was able to push the Boiling Springs lead to 9-3 when Jackson Reel was hit by a pitch. Starnes, who came on in relief of Tristan Smith on the mound, was able to end the game for the Bulldogs by striking out the final batter of the game to give Boiling Springs the victory. Boiling Springs will now turn their focus to a two-game series against Dorman that is scheduled to start at Dorman on Wednesday before the Bulldogs host the Cavaliers on Friday night. While the Bulldogs have their eyes on next week when region play starts, Lipscomb said that pride will keep his team focused on the series against Dorman as the rivalry with the Cavaliers goes back many years. "Throughout my whole coaching career that's been one of our top rivals," said Lipscomb. "We want to go over there and beat them and I'm sure they feel the same way about us. We've had some battles over the years going all the way back to the early 2000's and while they're in a different region we both have pride and want to win that game." Bulldogs Soccer Takes Two Over IndiansWhile the Boiling Springs baseball team was picking up a victory on Tuesday night, so were two more of the Bulldogs athletic programs as both the boys and girls soccer teams came away with region victories over Gaffney.
The Boiling Springs boys team went on the road to Gaffney to pick up a 4-0 win over the Indians to pick up a key region victory. The Bulldogs got two goals from senior Peyton Pressley as well as one goal each from Christian Gonzalez and Yonathan Gonzalez. The boys' team will next return to the field on Friday when they travel to Nation Ford for another region matchup. The Boiling Springs girls team also picked up a 3-0 home victory over the Indians for their first region win of the season. The Bulldogs got goals from senior Kylie Horton, junior Emily Vargas, and freshman Charley Kerr. Boiling Springs will next travel to Dorman on Thursday in a non-region matchup. Comments are closed.
