In a game that saw Chesnee trailing by as many as eighteen points in the first half, few would have seen the game coming down to the final minute with Boiling Springs walking away with a 56-53 victory and a fourth place finish at the 2019 Chesnee Roundball Classic.
After leading 39-17 at halftime behind a strong first half from sophomore guard Trey McManus, who scored seventeen of his game high twenty-two points in the first half, the Chesnee Eagles started their comeback. The Eagles outscored the Bulldogs 19-9 in the third quarter to put the score at 48-36 entering the final period of play. "I thought we came out of halftime not ready to go and I think Coach Pitt done a great job of getting his kids ready to go because they came out ready to compete," said Boiling Springs head coach Hal McManus. "We knew they weren't going to give up and they came out turning the defensive pressure up and we didn't handle it well." Chesnee was able to finish their comeback when AJ Littlejohn hit a three-pointer with just over two minutes to go in the game and the Eagles grabbed a 52-50 lead. The Bulldogs may have trailed but they weren’t done as Corey Johnson soon responded with a shot to tie the game at 52-52 with just under two minutes left. Coming out of a timeout Boiling Springs’ Trey McManus made a steal on an Eagles pass and sent the ball ahead to Johnson for a go-ahead layup while also adding a free throw to cap off a 6-1 run for the Bulldogs to end the game. "I told our kids that I was proud of how when we went down two there late they didn't hang their heads and they made every play there at the end of the game to finish it out for the win," said McManus. "Our senior Cameron Bocksteigel came over during a timeout reminding the guys that we were still okay and we just needed to settle down and it was exactly what needed to be said. Then Corey makes a big play and we were able to get the win." Khalil Brown who averaged over ten points a game for the Bulldogs in the tournament was named to the Chesnee Roundball Classic All-Tournament team. The Eagles also saw Nyquille O’Fair named to the All-Tournament team on Monday afternoon. The Bulldogs finish the tournament with a 2-1 record defeating both Chesnee and Greer with their only loss coming on the opening day against eventual tournament runner-up Blacksburg. "We have a lot of things we still need to work on but I'm proud of the team winning two games in a tournament with this much talent," said McManus. "Only one team is going to win three and that's the champion so to get two wins against these players, coaches, and teams I'm happy with that result." Boiling Springs will return to action on January 3rd as they travel to take on the Byrnes Rebels. Chesnee will next play January 4th at Landrum. In the early game on Saturday afternoon at the Chesnee Roundball Classic the Boiling Springs Bulldogs used a 30-4 run from the midway point of the first quarter to halftime to lead themselves to a 65-52 victory over the Greer Yellow Jackets. After a disappointing 71-64 loss to Blacksburg on Friday night where they couldn't overcome an early lead it was a refreshing change for the Bulldogs.
"I thought our kids responded well and I felt like we would after we practiced well this morning," said Boiling Springs head coach Hal McManus. "After they started on the 12-2 run our kids really responded well by going on that 30-4 run to end the half and we just played a lot better overall game today than we did yesterday." The early run by Greer was led by their center Jaleel Skinner seven of his team high thirteen points in the quarter and was a presence on the defensive end for the Yellow Jackets as he registered nine blocks on Saturday. After the Greer run to start the game the Bulldogs got some quality play from senior Jordan Askew who led the Boiling Springs 8-2 run to end the first quarter as he scored six of the eight points putting the Bulldogs behind only 14-10 at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter the Bulldogs used an attacking defense to force turnovers and outscore the Yellow Jackets 22-4 in the second quarter with most of those points coming from junior Cam Earls who scored nine of the team's twenty-two points. In addition to Earls the Bulldogs had six different players all score in the quarter. "During that run our kids were doing a great job of following their shots and getting second chance opportunities," said McManus. "Skinner was doing a good job for them on defense there in the post but our guys were doing a great job of finding ways to score even with that presence." At halftime the Bulldogs held a 32-18 halftime lead and they just kept the pressure on from there and a lot of that had to do with the play of junior guard Corey Johnson who after having a tough night on Friday responded with fifteen of high game high seventeen points in the second half of Saturday's game. In the third quarter the Bulldogs hit four three pointers with two of those coming from Khalil Brown who scored fourteen points in the game. While Greer got a good game from Skinner they also got a good afternoon from sophomore guard Isreal Rhodes who scored ten points with seven of those coming in the fourth quarter as the Yellow Jackets attempted to make a run of their own. While Boiling Springs was led on offense by Johnson and Brown they weren't the only players for the Bulldogs to finish in double figures as Askew also finished the day with thirteen points. The Bulldogs will face Chesnee for fourth place in the Chesnee Roundball Classic on Monday at 4:30 PM. With the holiday season quickly approaching the Boiling Springs wrestling team had a busy week of matches to wrap up before taking a break for the holidays.
Last Friday the Bulldogs started competition at the two-day Timberwolves duals where they competed at White Knoll High school where they brought home the third place trophy against a very competitive field. On their way to the third place finish the Bulldogs defeated Gilbert High School who was last year's 3A state champions. Bulldogs freshman wrestler, who wrestles at 106, was named to the All-Tournament team. On Wednesday night the Bulldogs returned home where they defeated both Newberry and fellow district team Chesnee in a tri-match. Along with the high school matches the Bulldogs also saw both their middle school teams, Boiling Springs Middle and Rainbow Lake Middle , compete as a part of the festivities. The wrestling team will be off during the holiday season before getting back to competition right after the new year when they travel to take place in the Bearcat Invitational at Rock Hill High School from January 3-4, 2020. It’s that time of year again, no I’m not talking about Christmas, it’s time for the SCHSL realignment and this year it brings significant changes for both Boiling Springs and Chesnee.
Early Thursday morning news broke (hat tip to Jed Blackwell for being the first to report it) that the SCHSL had released its proposed realignment plans for the 2020-2022 seasons and with it both the Bulldogs and the Eagles will be in new regions next year. The first major change will see the Boiling Springs Bulldogs being split from a lot of their long time region mates as they head to Region III-5A. They will be joined in the five team region with Gaffney, Clover, Fort Mill, and Nation Ford. Their previous region (II-5A) will now consist of Dorman, Byrnes, Spartanburg, Wade Hampton, and Riverside. While it will have a lot of new faces Region III-5A isn’t a new one to the Bulldogs as they were the region champions there in quite a few sports during their first stop in the region as it was their first region during the switch to 5A in 2016. You can read about the 2016 accomplishments in this story from that year. The biggest changes for the Bulldogs will be the large amount of travel time to their new opponents, especially in non-football sports, along with the loss of some long time region matchups against the likes of Spartanburg, Dorman, and Byrnes. A big challenge for the Bulldogs under this new proposal will be travel time for the student-athletes as last year with seven opponents the combined travel in one sport for the Bulldogs in region play was 164 miles but as part of this new realignment proposal they will now be traveling 229 miles amongst four opponents. A part of that comes with the loss of all fellow county schools as the Bulldogs will be the only 5A school in Spartanburg County to not be in the same region with at least one county school. For the Chesnee Eagles they will see a significant change as well as they will now be changing classifications as the Eagles will now be dropping from 3A to 2A. They will be back in familiar territory though as they will be back to the same classification they had always known before the previous realignment. The Eagles will now be in Region II-2A along with Blacksburg, Landrum, Legion Collegiate (Football Only), St. Joseph’s, and two non-football playing schools in Greer Middle College and Brashier Middle College. With the move Chesnee will now return to playing some familiar opponents as they’ll now face county foe Landrum again along with facing a Blacksburg team they have been region mates with before. One challenge the Eagles will face is that they’ll be dealing with playing Charter and Private schools again with three of those schools in their region. It has been an ongoing debate in the state for years about the fairness of those schools playing in a public school league and under the proposed new realignment it will be Chesnee who deals with it for the next two seasons. While the addition of the Charter and Private schools will be a challenge the move to 2A should be a good move for the Eagles as they will now be facing much more like sized schools in the playoffs and during the season unlike the last few years where they were one of the smaller 3A schools. Schools will have a deadline of January 23 to appeal the new realignment proposal and unless there is many changes this will be the regions for the Bulldogs and Eagles for the next two seasons. The Boiling Springs Bulldogs used a 21-9 second quarter and a twenty-five point night from junior Corey Johnson to defeat Chesnee 65-44 on Monday night to pick up their seventh win in a row. "The second quarter was key for us as we made a run as we got out and picked up easy baskets," said Boiling Springs head coach Hal McManus. "I think in the third and fourth quarters though we just kind of hung on. I thought Chesnee played a great game and I know Coach Pitt has to be proud of his kids tonight." After having to leave with an injury in Boiling Springs' last game against Broome the Bulldogs Corey Johnson started off the game on Monday night it seemed he was trying to make up for the time he missed as he scored twelve points in the opening quarter for the Bulldogs. "I don't think Corey was finished the other night at Broome," said McManus. "He kept us in the game their in the first quarter scoring most of our points. He also had a great night rebounding the ball." Johnson said that missing time wasn't a big factor to his start on Monday but said he just took advantage of the opportunities his teammates were giving him. "We just came out here and played the way we're supposed to play and my teammates set me up giving me the chance to take the shot when I had it," said Johnson. "It was a huge confidence booster to get my shot going early and I felt like the team fed off of it the rest of the way." While the Bulldogs led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter it was the second quarter where they made their run as they forced Chesnee into turnovers and kept their offense to only two points through the first four and a half minutes of the second quarter. The Eagles finally broke their drought when Brady Poole hit a jump shot as he led Chesnee in scoring in the quarter by also hitting a three pointer later in the quarter. Johnson and Trey McManus both scored seven points for the Bulldogs in the quarter while Cam Earls added five points of his own. The two teams were pretty even through the second half with the Bulldogs grabbing a slight advantage outscoring Chesnee 28-24 in the half. Boiling Springs was led in scoring by Johnson who had twenty-five points and nine rebounds with Earls also finishing in double digits with fourteen points. They also got an impressive fourth quarter from Brylie Marcum who scored all eight of his points in the fourth quarter. Chesnee was led in scoring on Monday night by Nyquille O'Fair who scored twelve points for the Eagles with Cole Hoskyns following close behind with ten points of his own. The Eagles also got a big night from Jacob Kimbrell on the boards as he collected eleven rebounds on Monday night. Chesnee will return to action on Tuesday night as they travel to face Laurens Academy. Boiling Springs will also return to action on Tuesday night as they open region play with a home game against the visiting Spartanburg Vikings. Lady Bulldogs Use Attacking Defense To Defeat EaglesThe Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs defense used an attacking defense that held Chesnee scoreless in the fourth quarter on their way to a 45-21 win on Monday night. Chesnee was able to keep the game close in the first quarter though as they took an approach that the Bulldogs had struggled with just last week.
"When I saw their defense early I knew they had seen the Broome tape where we struggled some," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. "I told the girls during the timeout that we were going to have to figure it out and we did just that." While the Bulldogs worked out some kinks early in the first quarter it was Laisha Labra who stepped up for Boiling Springs to take on the scoring role as she led them in the quarter eight of the team's fifteen points. "That was big for Laisha in the second quarter because without her effort in the quarter we would have struggled," said Lytle. "Her heart and will is bigger than most and if we had ten with that type of heart we wouldn't lose a game." The Bulldogs led 22-11 at halftime and in the third quarter both teams tied with each scoring ten points with Chesnee only trailing by eleven going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs defense locked in though not allowing the Eagles a good look at the basket and keeping them scoreless in the quarter while scoring thirteen points of their own with Meghan Scharpenburg leading the way with six of her eight points in the game. Coach Lytle knew that his team would be challenged by Chesnee's post play and that was the focus for his team on Monday night. "The focus tonight was on our post play because going into region play I felt that was our biggest question," said Lytle. "We know that Chesnee has really good post players and I needed my post players they could make stops down there and I'm pleased with how they performed tonight." Boiling Springs was led in scoring on Monday night by Arissa Edwards and Laisha Labra who both scored eleven points for the Bulldogs. Speaking of the post play by Chesnee the Eagles were led in scoring by Abbey Ray and Jessa Beach who both six points a piece for the Eagles on Monday night while Ray led the team with fourteen rebounds. Both teams will return to action on Tuesday night as the Eagles travel to Laurens Academy while the Bulldogs will open up region play in a home game against Spartanburg. With Boiling Springs losing their leading scorer early in the game it opened up an opportunity for another player to step up and Cam Earls done just that as he led the Bulldogs to their third win over Broome in three weeks with a 61-46 victory on Friday night. Boiling Springs jumped out to an early 8-2 lead over the Centurions by using a strong pressure defense on their way to a 15-6 first quarter lead. The Bulldogs continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter outscoring the Centurions 25-16 in the quarter on their way to a 40-22 halftime lead. While the Bulldogs defense helped lead to turnovers it was Cam Earls who was finding the basket on the other end as he scored sixteen of his game high twenty-five points in the first half while also adding nine rebounds in the game. The third quarter saw the Bulldogs struggle from the field as they were outscored 12-6 in the third quarter as Broome's Adam Comer scored eight of his team high fourteen points in the quarter. The Bulldogs rebounded in the fourth quarter outscoring Broome 15-10 in the quarter with Earls once again leading the way with seven of the fifteen points. Jordan Askew had eight points for the Bulldogs while Trey McManus and Khalil Brown also added seven points themselves. The Bulldogs will travel to Chesnee on Monday night before opening region play on Tuesday night when the Spartanburg Vikings travel to Boiling Springs. Lady Bulldogs Win Low Scoring GameOn Friday night the Boiling Springs Bulldogs proved that while they love to play a fast paced game they can also win one when it's slowed down as they defeated Broome 26-21 in front of a large crowd at the Centurions gym. "Broome is a well coached team and they came really prepared tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. "They had us and really slowed us down. They took away our two top scorers and it took us a minute to figure it out but we were able to pick up a tough victory." The first half was a very low scoring affair as the Bulldogs led Broome 6-5 at the end of the first quarter and were trailing 12-10 late in the second quarter. With the Bulldogs trailing 12-10 with just seconds left in the half Mehan Scharpenberg came up with a big three pointer from the right side of the court giving Boiling Springs a 13-12 lead at halftime. Scharpenberg led the Bulldogs in the first half scoring five of their thirteen first half points. Coming out of halftime the Bulldogs got a little breathing room as D'Marria Glenn picked up two big baskets for Boiling Springs giving them a 17-12 lead on their way to a 20-12 lead when the buzzer sounded to mark the end of the third quarter. ""We told D'Marria that the game was going to have to be won down low," said Lytle. "They were taking away our outside game and she had to be a presence for us. I was proud of how she stepped up and made her presence known on the block." The Centurions outscored the Bulldogs 7-6 in the final quarter but couldn't cut into the Boiling Springs lead as they captured a hard fought victory. Scharpenberg and Glenn both led the way scoring for the Bulldogs on Friday night as they each had nine points a piece. The Centurions were led by Tashayla Miller who scored six points for Broome. The Bulldogs will travel to Chesnee on Monday night before opening region play on Tuesday night when the Spartanburg Vikings travel to Boiling Springs. Bulldogs Wrestling UpdateAfter finishing in fourth place at the Wildcat Invitational last weekend the Boiling Springs wrestling team returned home for a meet on Wednesday afternoon where the Bulldogs finished 2-1 on the night.
The Bulldogs defeated rival Chapman in the first matchup on Wednesday 60-18 before also defeating Westside 66-10 later on in the evening. The Bulldogs only defeat came to Crescent as they fell 41-28 to the team that won the Wildcat Invitational. Boiling Springs started competition in the White Knolls Duals on Friday and it will continue into Saturday. The Bulldogs next match after the White Knoll Duals will be at home on Thursday against Chesnee and Newberry that will start at 6:00 PM. After defeating Woodruff by over thirty points just a week ago the rematch was a lot closer affair as it took a strong second half from junior Corey Johnson and a great defensive play by Jordan Askew in the closing seconds to lead Boiling Springs to a 57-54 victory over the Wolverines on Tuesday night. "You always have to be happy with a win because at the end of the year all anyone looks at is the wins and the losses," said Bulldogs head coach Hal McManus. "You have to be happy that we were able to win a close one. That was our fifth win in a row but we haven't had to win one where we were tough but we were able to do that tonight." With the Bulldogs leading by one and just eleven seconds left on the clock Woodruff brought the ball down the court looking for a game winning shot they worked a play that allowed them to drive down the baseline but Boiling Springs senior forward Jordan Askew picked up a key charge call and gave the ball back to the Bulldogs. After the big defensive play Corey Johnson was fouled and went to the line to sink his eighth and ninth free throws of the quarter, a place that he was perfect from for the game. "That was either Jordan's second or third charge call of the game and he couldn't have found a better time for it, it was such a big play," said McManus. "He stepped up and picked up the charge and it was just a great defensive effort by our whole team on that possession. Then Corey came up to the line and sealed the victory for us at the free throw line." At halftime the Bulldogs only led 23-15 and Johnson had only scored five points in the game but that was all about to change as he scored twenty-two of his game high twenty-seven points in the second half with thirteen of those coming in the fourth quarter. He hit eleven straight free throws in the game to account for eleven of his twenty-seven points while also being strong on the boards where he led the team with eight rebounds. "Corey is the junior leader for us and he's a player that wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line," said McManus. "Corey was the guy that was leading us in the huddle and put this team on his back. He was leading us defensively and rebounded the ball great. He's just a tough player and an even better kid." Johnson wasn't the only player to finish in double figures for the Bulldogs as sophomore Trey McManus also finished with ten points on Tuesday night. Jordan Askew, while having the biggest defensive play of the game, also added five points and five rebounds in the Bulldogs victory. Woodruff got an impressive performance from D'Yon Bartley who finished the night with a double-double after leading the Wolverines with nineteen points and grabbing ten rebounds. Boiling Springs will return to the court on Friday night when they travel to Broome to face the Centurions for the third time this season. Coach McManus knows that the Centurions will be hungry to take this game from his team but that the Bulldogs will be ready to take on a quality Broome team for the third time. "You really hate to have to face a team for the third time at their place and they're a team that just keeps getting better every time we play them," said McManus. "I'm sure it will be a great crowd over there and they'll be ready to play. I know they're going to be looking to win this one and we're going to work hard the next couple of days and we'll be ready to play come Friday night." Lady Bulldogs Take Revenge From Earlier LossJust last week the Boiling Springs Bulldogs loss their first game of the season to Woodruff but they used a strong defense and clutch shooting down the stretch to reap revenge from their earlier loss by defeating the visiting Wolverines 40-32 on Tuesday night.
"It feels great to pick up the win," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. "We weren't fully staffed when we went to face them down at their place but tonight we had everyone back. We needed a game like this tonight to see if we could finish a game and we did just that." The Bulldogs got another great night from senior guard Arissa Edwards who led all scorers with seventeen points while also adding four rebounds. One of the best shots of the night also came from Edwards with time running out in the third quarter when she shot the ball from somewhere in between the three point line and the half-court line finding nothing but the bottom of the net to give the Bulldogs a 31-21 lead going into the final quarter. "Arissa is an amazing player," said Lytle. "She is the region player of the year and people need to come out and see her play." While Edwards led the Bulldogs from the second quarter to the end of the game it was Meghan Scharpenberg who kept the Bulldogs close in the first quarter as she scored six of Boiling Springs' eight points in the first quarter. She finished the night with thirteen points while also picking up four steals with three of those coming in the first quarter. "Meghan has been a great transfer and shows lots of signs of producing for us," said Lytle. "She came to us from Michigan where she was playing 1A averaging twenty points but now she's starting to get the feel of 5A basketball and getting used to it. She's going to be a huge contributor to us this season." After only leading by two points at the half the Bulldogs went on an 11-3 run in the third quarter to push their lead to 31-21 and kept that distance throughout most the rest of the game. The Wolverines, who are ranked #7 in the most recent 3A basketball coaches poll, were led on Tuesday night by Zavia Jeter who scored sixteen points while also getting a good night from Maddie Grace Runyan who finished the night with eight points and nine rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs will also travel to Broome on Friday night with the game tipping off at 6:00 PM. The Boiling Springs wresting team ended a pretty impressive weekend by finishing fourth overall at the Wildcat Invitational at Woodmont High School. The event was a two day tournament that started on Friday night and was won by Crescent High School.
As part of their fourth place finish the Bulldogs placed eleven wrestlers and put four wrestlers into the finals. Freshman Ayden Whisler, sophomore Ethan Westall, and junior Drayton Wines all came away with second place finishes at the tournament while Wines lost in the heavyweight division to the defending state champion from Powdersville High School. The Bulldogs will return to the mat on Thursday when they host a match between Westside, local team Chapman, and the winner of the Wildcat Invitational Crescent. The Boiling Springs basketball team finished off their week of basketball with a 3-0 record after capping off their week with a 71-56 win over Broome on Friday night. The Bulldogs defense forced twenty-seven turnovers while registering eighteen steals but the Centurions defense gave Boiling Springs a tough time as well. "I think Broome played a great game and really came out with a great game plan against us," said Bulldogs head coach Hal McManus. "Our guys done a great job with our pressure and forcing turnovers which led to us getting some easier buckets which really helped in the long run." Broome kept the game close throughout the early parts of the game as Boiling Springs held a 19-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and even closed it to within six points by halftime with the Bulldogs leading 31-26. The Bulldogs were led in the first half by Cam Earls who scored twelve of his seventeen points over the first two quarters of the game. "Cam played really well on both ends tonight," said McManus. "He knocked some big shots for us in both halves and picked up some key steals there in transition for us late in the game." The Bulldogs used a 21-9 run to start the second half to separate themselves from the Centurions as they kept up the defensive pressure and eventually held a 56-42 lead at the end of the third quarter. The run was led by Corey Johnson who scored eight of his game high nineteen points in the third quarter. "I think about midway through the third quarter Corey just really took over the game," said McManus. "Corey and Cam really game us a good one two punch offensively tonight." Johnson continued his good work in the fourth quarter as he scored six of the Bulldogs fifteen points in the final period to help secure the victory. The Bulldogs also got an impressive game from Khalil Brown who scored thirteen points while adding seven rebounds and three steals. Boiling Springs will next return to the court on Tuesday night when they host Woodruff before traveling to Broome on Friday night where they will play the Centurions for the third straight week in a row. Lady Bulldogs Use Big Runs To Capture Win Over BroomeThe Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs went on a run to start the game and used a few more runs throughout the game to help grab a 51-28 win over the visiting Broome Centurions.
"We were really trying to push the ball and pick up our tempo," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. "We're trying to clean up some things before region gets here which are only about two weeks away." The first run the Bulldogs went on lasted the whole first quarter as they held on to a 15-2 lead at the end of the quarter thanks in part to turnovers on defense and five points from Meghan Scharpenberg. In the second quarter Boiling Springs started the quarter on a 5-0 run but the Centurions used a run of their own to get back into the game as they went on a 10-0 run to put the score at 17-12 midway through the quarter. Boiling Springs then went on a 10-4 run to end the half giving the Bulldogs a 29-16 halftime lead. "We got relaxed there in the second quarter on defense," said Lytle. "We took a timeout there to get the girls to wake up and we ended up finishing the quarter on a good note." In the third quarter the Bulldogs opened the quarter on a 7-0 run before Broome responded with a 7-2 run of their own putting Boiling Springs' lead at 38-23 with one quarter to play. The Bulldogs ended the game outscoring the Centurions 13-5 on their way to the victory. The Bulldogs were led in scoring on Friday night by senior Arissa Edwards who scored nineteen points and Coach Lytle says has brought a lot of experience to such a young team. "It is such a blessing to have someone with so much experience," said Lytle. "She has been with us for years and knows the program and the pace we want to set." While the Bulldogs are happy with the victory they are also looking forward to getting back some players they've been without in the early part of the season. "We knew we were going to have a smaller roster this year and it took a hit early on with some injuries," said Lytle. "We'll have eight with us tomorrow and we hope to have our starting center back next week. We're getting back healthy and thankful to hopefully be getting all the injuries out of the way early." The Bulldogs will return to the court on Saturday as they travel to Dorman to face Westside in the Farm Bureau Invitational. The Boiling Springs Bulldogs wrestling team opened up their new season by picking up three wins in their new home arena by defeating Broome, Crest (NC), and Clover on Tuesday night.
"We did well because the first date is always a little nervous and you never know how they'll respond under the lights," said Boiling Springs head wrestling coach Lee Thomas. "We had some younger kids step up and get a couple of wins and it was sure a good way to start the season." Boiling Springs won their first match of the night against Broome picking up a 67-10 victory. The Bulldogs got big wins from Ethan Westall at 132, Matt Sanders at 138, and Cam Philson at 220 along with wins at the 126, 145, 152, and 160 weight classes to bring home an impressive win over a quality Broome wrestling team. In the second match of the night the Bulldogs picked up another lopsided victory by defeating Crest (NC) 66-12 by winning twelve of the fourteen matches. The Bulldogs third match of the night went back and forth early against Clover before they were able to finally pull away and pick up a 45-36 victory. One of the deciding matches against Clover was Moffette Graves being able to pick up a six point win at the 195 weight class. With the win the Bulldogs wrestling team becomes the third Boiling Springs team to pick up a victory in their first contest at the new arena and Coach Thomas said it's a special moment for the team to pick up a win in their first match at the new arena. "It was awesome and we talked about it yesterday how they could set the precedent for the team in the new arena," said Thomas. "They'll probably be the last team for a while to get an opportunity like this and this is one of the nicest facilities in the state. I know the kids are proud of the win and to start the season 3-0." Boiling Springs will take to the mat again this weekend when they travel to Woodmont for the Wildcat Invitational on both Friday and Saturday. |
