The Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs softball team finished out their first trip through region play on Friday night with an 18-0 victory over the visiting Spartanburg Vikings. The Bulldogs had an Impressive performance from Ashlyn Hartsoe on Friday night who allowed only one Vikings hit while striking out ten Spartanburg batters.
"I'm really proud of her and her performance tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Randy Piazza about Hartsoe's performance Friday night. "She was keeping the ball down tonight and really hitting her spots." While Hartsoe's pitching performance was impressive, the Bulldogs bats were red hot on Friday night. The Bulldogs batted around in the first inning as the two through eight hitters in the Boiling Springs lineup all scored. The Bulldogs were able to score seven runs in the first inning as Grace McKinney started the Boiling Springs offensive performance with a single for their first hit of the game. Olivia Hall would follow two batters later with a triple bringing home McKinney and Emily Hill, who had reached on an error, to give Boiling Springs a 2-0 lead. Hall would score on the next at-bat on a single by Natalie Hazzard. The Bulldogs then scored three more runs in the first inning on a single by Tori Beland and a triple by Zoey Stewart to give Boiling Springs a 7-0 lead at the end of the first inning. In the third inning the Bulldogs bats got back to work as Sammy Quintero walked to start the inning but soon scored on a double by Zoey Stewart, who finished the night just a homerun away from hitting for the cycle. AD Raines would follow Stewart with a single that scored Beland who had reached on a walk of her own. The Bulldogs got two more runs when Stewart and Raines both scored on a double by Ragan Bristol to put the Boiling Springs lead at 11-0. The Bulldogs finished the scoring in the third inning when Stewart hit a single up the middle scoring her fourth RBI of the game and putting the Boiling Springs lead at 14-0 after the third inning. Olivia Hall got her third RBI of the game in the fourth inning when she singled in Ragan Bristol who had reached base on a Vikings error. Hall and Grace McKinney, who was also on base, both scored on a single by Sammy Quintero who after a Vikings error would come around and score on the same at-bat to make the Bulldogs lead 18-0. The Bulldogs last hit of the night was by Tori Beland who reached base on all four of her plate appearances on Friday night. "It was really good to come out here and hit the ball like we did tonight. We struggled a few times this year getting the bats going but to be able to hit like we did tonight I'm really proud of all the girls," said Coach Piazza. "I was also really proud of how our two young kids Quintero and Raines came out here and performed tonight." The Bulldogs with the victory finished their first trip through region play with a 2-2 record and will travel to Laurens Tuesday before returning to region play next Friday when Dorman travels to Boiling Springs. On Monday night the rain held off just long enough for the Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs to capture a 5-4 victory over the Fort Mill Lady Yellow Jackets after falling to them 6-2 earlier this season.
The Bulldogs got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning when Emily Hill hit a homerun to right centerfield giving Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead. They added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning when AD Raines scored on a double by Olivia Hall after pinch running for the catcher Ragan Bristol who had reached on a double of her own. The Bulldogs added to their lead on the next at-bat when Natalie Hazzard singled home Hall and gave Boiling Springs a 3-0 lead after the third inning. Boiling Springs held onto the 3-0 lead until the top of the fifth inning when the Yellow Jackets were able to score three runs of their own. Fort Mill's Ally Hall started the scoring for the Yellow Jackets when she singled and later was able to score on a single by Brynn Bartolini to cut the Boiling Springs lead to 3-1. Bartolini and Emma Skovran, who reached on a single of her own, both scored on a double by Lauren Collie to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth inning the Bulldogs had two outs with Olivia Hall and Natalie Hazzard at second and third base with Emily Hill, who had hit an earlier home run, coming to the plate. Hill hit a long fly ball to centerfield that was misplayed by the Fort Mill fielder allowing both Hall and Hazzard to score giving the Bulldogs a 5-3 lead after the fifth inning. Fort Mill added a run in the top of the sixth inning while the Bulldogs were unable to do anything in the bottom half of the sixth inning and the game on the line going to the top of the seventh. The Yellow Jackets were able to get one runner on in the top of the seventh with one out with Collie coming to the plate who had brought home two runners earlier in the game. Collie was able to make good contact on a 1-2 pitch but Boiling Springs centerfielder Zoey Stewart made a great catch and an even better throw to first base to get a double play after the runner was unable to beat the throw back to the base giving the Bulldogs a 5-4 victory over the Yellow Jackets. "I'm glad about the way we battled in the game tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Randy Piazza. "It's always nice to be able to get a win against a good team like that especially in a rematch from earlier this year." Boiling Springs got a good pitching performance from Ashlyn Hartsoe who pitched a complete game and got the win for the Bulldogs. The Lady Bulldogs will return to region play on Tuesday night as they travel to Gaffney to take on the Lady Indians. The Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs softball opened region play on Tuesday night at Dorman and escaped with a thrilling 5-4 victory after trailing 4-3 heading into the top of the seventh inning.
The Bulldogs got on the board first when Olivia Hall singled in Emily Hill, who had reached on a single of her own, to give Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. While the Bulldogs were able to force the Cavaliers to go one-two-three in the first inning it was the second inning that gave the Bulldogs trouble. After Grace Lee and Brianna Greene were able to reach base with out in the bottom of the second inning, the Cavaliers were able to grab the lead when Grayce Black hit a three run home run giving the Cavaliers a 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs were able to cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning when Zoey Stewart scored on a double by Lindsey Edge. In the bottom of the fifth inning the Cavaliers added to their lead when Jack Bush singled in Caroline Darwin who had doubled prior to Bush's at-bat to give Dorman a 4-2 lead. The top of the sixth inning saw the Bulldogs close the lead to 4-3 when Grace McKinney singled in Edge. In the top of the seventh inning the Bulldogs were able to get Olivia Hall and Tori Beland on base with singles and both were sitting on second and third with two outs with Lindsey Edge coming to the plate. With the game on the line Edge was able to hit a ball to centerfield that was unable to be caught by the Dorman fielder allowing Hall and Beland to score and giving Boiling Springs it's first lead since the first inning at 5-4. The Bulldogs were able to keep the Cavaliers from scoring in the bottom of the seventh to propel the Bulldogs to their first region win of the season. "I'm really proud of how our girls battled back tonight and were able to capture the victory," said Bulldogs head coach Randy Piazza, "It's always nice to be able to get that first region win especially against a good team like this." The Bulldogs softball team will return to action on Thursday night as they travel to Byrnes for another region contest. On Tuesday night the Boiling Springs Bulldogs soccer program both finished out their non conference schedule with victories against Blue Ridge as the boys team won 4-1 and the girls team won 2-0 to continue their undefeated season.
In the boys game the Bulldogs got the scoring started early when David Leon found the back of the net four minutes into the match giving Boiling Springs an early 1-0 lead. It didn't take the Bulldogs long to score again as thirteen minutes later Cesar Rivera pushed the lead to 2-0 at the seventeen minute mark. With the game in stoppage time at the end of the first half, the Bulldogs were able to find the back of the net one more time as Leon scored his second goal of the half giving Boiling Springs a 3-0 halftime lead. "Last year David Leon and a few of our other strikers were some of the top scorers in the region," said Bulldogs head soccer coach Nathan Robbins about Leon's performance Tuesday night, "With those guys being seniors I expected them to lead the team and put scores on the board just like they did last year." The Bulldogs added another score late in the second half when Cristian Harris found the back of the net giving Boiling Springs a 4-0 lead. With the victory the Bulldogs boys team finish their non region schedule at 2-2 and will enter region play on Thursday as they travel to Dorman. In the girl's game the Lady Bulldogs continued their undefeated season as they beat Blue Ridge 2-0 but it took a strong second half for them to capture the victory. The Lady Bulldogs battled the visiting Lady Tigers to a 0-0 halftime score as both teams couldn't get a shot to find the net. In the second half though the Lady Bulldogs got the offense going when junior Brooke Cash broke away behind the Blue Ridge defense to give Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead when she found the back of the net. Boiling Springs added to their lead when freshman McKenna Wilson scored in the seventieth minute to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead and to seal the victory. The Lady Bulldogs will return to action on Thursday when they host Dorman in their first region III-5A match of the season. On Saturday the Boiling Springs Bulldogs boy's tennis team hosted their fifth annual Zaxby's Invitational that was won by the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets by one victory over the defending tournament champions, Boiling Springs. It is the second straight year that the tournament was decided between the two schools.
The tournament had a mixture of competition from the Upstate of South Carolina as the field included Boiling Springs, Fort Mill, Hillcrest and Chapman. Fort Mill captured the championship with twenty-two points while Boiling Springs finished in second place with eighteen points followed by Hillcrest and Chapman. Fort Mill was able to capture the tournament as they had four flight champions in four singles, five singles, one doubles and two doubles. Boiling Springs had three flight champions Joey Vert was victorious in one singles, Blaine Lawter was victorious in two singles and Clayton Elder was victorious in three singles. "We really feel like this tournament helps us get ready for our region," said Bulldogs head coach Scott Galloway. "When you battle in a region like we do with so much talent it's always good to face quality competition like this to prepare for the rest of the year." The Bulldogs will begin their region schedule on Tuesday as they travel to Dorman to face the Cavaliers. On Monday night the high school softball season officially started and while that comes with a lot of excitement on its own, the Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs decided to add a little excitement to the start of the season as they scored six runs over the last three innings of the game to rally for a 6-4 win over the Blue Ridge Tigers.
While both teams were unable to score a run in the first two innings, Blue Ridge scored four runs in the third inning on three hits. The inning started when Kinsleigh Cothran doubled and was followed by a single from Baylie King. After the Bulldogs were able to get a strikeout, Cothran and King both scored for the Tigers on a Bulldogs error while Jessica Clark was able to reach base. The Tigers scored two more runs in the third on a groundout to second and a single by Sydney Underwood. After being unable to respond in the bottom of the third inning the Lady Bulldogs finally got the bats going in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out in the inning, Emily Hill was walked to give Boiling Springs its first base runner since the first inning. Hill advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Olivia Hall and then came home to score on a double by Natalie Hazzard giving the Bulldogs their first run of the game. Hazzard then scored on a single by Regan Bristol and the Bulldogs cut the Blue Ridge lead to 4-2 at the end of the fourth inning. In the fifth inning the Bulldogs cut the lead to 4-3 after Abbey Threatt doubled and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Grace McKinney but the Bulldogs saved the real excitement for their last at bats. After holding the Tigers scoreless in the top of the sixth inning the Bulldogs went to work at the plate. Hall got the rally going as she reached base on a single and Hazzard followed by reaching base on a Blue Ridge error. Bristol loaded the bases on a single to centerfield as the Bulldogs trailed 4-3 with one out in the inning. With the bases loaded and Threatt at the plate for the Bulldogs, Hall was able to steal home and tie the game at 4-4. After the Bulldogs were able to tie the game Threatt doubled to right centerfield allowing Hazzard and Bristol to score and give the Bulldogs a 6-4 lead. In the top of the seventh the Lady Bulldogs were able to finish the rally when McKinney caught a third out pop fly to third base giving Boiling Springs a 6-4 victory. After the game Boiling Springs head softball coach Randy Piazza had this to say about his team's victory, "We were able to overcome some adversity there and come back and grab the victory." When asked about the call to steal home to tie the game he added, "I felt like right there we just needed to make something happen and it worked out." The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Fort Mill on Wednesday night and will be back at home on Thursday to host Chapman before tp the Crescent Tournament this weekend. |
