Congratulations to Boiling Springs Cross Country runner Kade Gosnell and Boiling Springs Football player Caden Peeler on being named this week’s Boiling Springs Sports Journal’s Athletes of the Week. Gosnell won the Spartanburg County and 5A Upperstate Championships this past week. Peeler had five catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns on Friday night. Congratulations to Sydney Roberts and Abbey Ray for being selected this week's Boiling Springs Sports Journal Athletes of the Week. Sydney earned All-State honors with her third place finish in the AAA State Golf tournament while Abbey was selected to the SCCAWS AAA All-State Volleyball team.
The first snap of the game for the Byrnes Rebels was a bad snap to their own five yard line but that was the last thing to go wrong for the Rebels on Thursday night as they claimed a 55-21 victory over the Boiling Springs Bulldogs.
After the first fumble the Rebels were facing a third and fifteen at their own sixteen yard line when quarterback Lawrence Scott found tight end Kris Byrd for an eighty-four yard touchdown pass to give Byrnes a 7-0 lead. Boiling Springs would quickly answer back though as quarterback Aaron Thomas found wide receiver Chance Guest for a three yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter. After the Boiling Springs score, Byrnes outscored the Bulldogs 41-0 over the final eighteen minutes of the first half. Byrd scored twice more for the Rebels during the final eighteen minutes of the first half while Rahjai Harris added two scores and Braylin Johnson also scored. The Rebels would also add a defensive touchdown as they intercepted a Boiling Springs pass returning it twenty-five yards and giving Byrnes a 48-7 halftime lead. In the second half the Bulldogs came out still playing tough and never giving up as they outscored the Rebels 14-7 over the final twenty-four minutes, a trait that Boiling Springs head coach Rick Tate is pleased to see in his team. "We challenged them at halftime and they played tough," said Coach Tate. "We had some guys come out and make some plays which I'm proud of." The first score of the second half came from the Bulldogs when Aaron Thomas found wide receiver Caden Peeler for a twenty-one yard touchdown pass to make the score 48-14. After another Byrnes score, Thomas and Peeler would connect again, this time on an eighty yard touchdown pass to reach the final score of 55-21 in favor of the Rebels. Thomas had a good night for the Bulldogs as he passed for two-hundred and forty-nine yards with three touchdowns on Thursday night. While the regular season didn't end the way they wanted to the Bulldogs will start a whole new season in two weeks on November 9th as they are projected to travel to Northwestern for the first round of the 5A playoffs. The matchup would be a familiar one for the Bulldogs as they used to be long time region mates with Northwestern in the old days of Region II-4A. "We're used to District 3 stadium from all those matchups years ago," said Coach Tate. "From here on out it's a one game season and I know our kids will be ready to play. It's the playoffs and this is what everyone works all year to get to." The Boiling Springs girls golf team may have finished just short of their ultimate goal on Tuesday but they still had a pretty impressive year as they finished third in the SC 5A golf championship in Prosperity, SC with a two day score of 657. The Bulldogs finished in third place behind Lexington (613) and Blythewood (640) but finished ahead of region foes Byrnes (5th), Gaffney (7th), and Dorman (8th).
The Bulldogs were led on Monday by MK Talledo who shot a seventy-six and then backed that score up with a seventy-six on Tuesday as well. On Tuesday Boiling Springs got an impressive round from Madison Dixon who shot a two under seventy-one. Both players were named All-State with their performances as Talledo finished tied for sixth with a six over for the tournament and Dixon finished in tenth place with a nine over for the two day tournament. Lexington's Isabella Rawl won the individual state championship with a two under for the tournament while Spartanburg's Elle Johnson was the highest local finisher as she tied for fourth with a score of four over. While the season may have not finished exactly like the Bulldogs would have liked they did finish with an impressive season as they won their third straight region championship just a few weeks ago. Just a day after having two players named to the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas the Boiling Springs football team had another postseason award head its way on Monday afternoon as cornerback Storm Duck was named to the North team of the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl football game.
Duck is committed to play football at the University of North Carolina next season. He has three interceptions on the season as most teams have tried to stay away from him this season. He will be joined by other local players as Spartanburg's Jay Girdner and Moe Wedman, Broome's Brenden Taylor, Byrnes' Ben Henson, Chapman's Jaylan Smith, Dorman's Gabe Thompson and Zack Hillstock, Gaffney's Daylan Littlejohn and Hunter Bullock will all be part of this year's North team. The North-South game will be played at Coastal Carolina University on Saturday December 15, 2018 at noon. The North team will be coached by Christ Church's Don Frost while Broome head coach Lynn Fleming and former Byrnes and current Clover head coach Brian Lane will be assistant coaches. Congratulations to Boiling Springs’ Michael McDowell and Logan Billings on being named this week’s Boiling Springs Sports Journal’s Athletes of the Week. McDowell and Billings are both amongst the area leaders in tackles and sacks and also were selected for the 82nd Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas on Sunday. Congratulations to the Chesnee Lady Eagles Golf Team for being selected this week's Athletes of the Week. The Lady Eagles finished second in the 3A Upper State Tournament. The Lady Eagles won the Region II-3A Championship earlier in the season and they will be competing in the 3A State Tournament starting Monday.
On Sunday afternoon the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas announced the rosters for the 82nd Shrine Bowl to be held at Wofford College on December 15, 2018 at 1:00 PM.
When the rosters were announced the Boiling Springs Bulldogs had two members of their defense that had to cancel plans for that weekend as linebacker Logan Billings and defensive end Michael McDowell were both selected to be a part of the South Carolina team. Both Billings and McDowell have committed to play football at The Citadel next season. Billings is one of the leaders of tackles in the area as he has registered over eighty tackles this season for the Bulldogs. McDowell is one of the area leaders in sacks as he has registered eight sacks this season. Both players will be joining a South Carolina team looking to end a current losing streak by the Sandlappers as they’ve lost the past three games to North Carolina. The 2018 South Carolina team will be led by Dillon head coach Jackie Hayes and will also have a local connection as Spartanburg head coach Chris Miller will be an assistant coach on this year’s team. The first Boiling Springs drive of the game saw the Bulldogs get right to midfield before a fumble that was returned for a touchdown by Gaffney set the tone for the rest of the game as the Bulldogs fell 42-14 to the Gaffney Indians on Friday night.
"We made too many mistakes tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. "You can't make that many mistakes against a good football team and that's exactly what we done tonight." The turnover bug seemed to have taken ahold of the Bulldogs on Friday night as they committed four turnovers plus a blocked punt that all led to Gaffney points on Friday night. Already leading 7-0, Gaffney added to their lead in the first quarter after another turnover when Quez Smith ran the ball in from fifteen yards out to score one of his four touchdowns on Friday night. At the start of the second quarter the Boiling Springs offense got their first score of the game when quarterback Aaron Thomas found wide receiver Chance Guest on a twenty-two yard touchdown pass to make the lead 14-7 in favor of Gaffney. After another touchdown run by Smith to extend the Gaffney lead to 21-7, the Boiling Springs offense struck again when Thomas found wide receiver Caden Peeler on an eight yard touchdown pass to give the Indians a 21-14 halftime lead. Gaffney would outscore the Bulldogs 21-0 in the second half behind two more touchdown runs by Quez Smith and a six yard touchdown run by the Indians running back Ray Johnson. While the loss was a tough one for the Bulldogs they still have a chance to claim third place in the region with a victory over Byrnes in the regular season finale next Friday night. "It's Byrnes and it's going to be another great football team in this region," said Coach Tate. "We'll need to regroup this week and get after it on Friday." Byrnes defeated Hillcrest 42-35 on Friday night as they scored twenty-three points in three minutes during the fourth quarter against the Rams. The Boiling Springs Bulldogs tennis team finished out the regular season with a 5-2 victory over Mauldin on Tuesday night. With the victory the Bulldogs claimed the third spot in Region II-5A and sent Mauldin into second place after entering the match with the region lead.
The Bulldogs got victories from the first three singles as Anna Greer (6-2,6-0) got a victory in two sets in number one singles while Abigail Bragg (6-1, 2-6, 10-7) and Ava Bragg (6-3, 2-6, 10-7) were victorious in number two and three singles. With the Bulldogs leading 3-2 they were able to finish off the victory with wins in the doubles matches. Anna Greer and Abigail Bragg both won their second matches of the game in number one singles. In number two singles Madison Ball and Ansleigh Bragg also were also victorious 2-6 6-6 (7-1) 10-8. Boiling Springs will start the postseason on October 24 for the first round of the 5A playoffs. Boiling Springs came into Tuesday looking to have a repeat of their earlier five set victory over Byrnes but fell just short on senior night as the Bulldogs lost 3-2 in their final game of the regular season.
With Tuesday night being senior night the Bulldogs were saying goodbye to five seniors as Megan Caudell, Emma McClendon, Madyson Coombs, Amaya Richardson, and Maddie Reed all played their final game for the Bulldogs volleyball team. The Boiling Springs volleyball team done their best though to send the seniors out with a victory as they claimed game one 25-18. In game two Byrnes was able to even up the score as they won 25-19 though the Bulldogs after being down 23-12 fought back to 24-19 but it wasn't quite enough. In game three the Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back as they went on to claim a 25-19 victory. With a 2-1 lead the Bulldogs battled hard in game four as their rally fell just short losing 25-21. It seemed the Bulldogs just weren't ready to bid adieu to their seniors just yet as they were in familiar territory with a game five against the Rebels coming up. In game five though it was all Byrnes as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead on their way to a 15-5 win and claimed the match for the Rebels. With the victory Byrnes will claim the fourth seed in Region II-5A heading into the playoffs while the Bulldogs will fall just short of that goal this season. On Monday afternoon Kade Gosnell won the Region II-5A individual cross country championship after finishing the course at Dorman in sixteen minutes and thirty seconds and finishing eight seconds in front of second place.
The Bulldogs varsity boys finished as a team in fifth place though two minutes and nineteen seconds behind Dorman who was the team champion on Monday. The Bulldogs varsity girls team finished in seventh place behind Dorman who also won the girls team championship. The girls team best performance was by Jetta Turner who finished the course in twenty-three minutes and forty-seven seconds. |
