LANDRUM, SC - The final day of the 23rd annual Battle at the Border tournament started with a game that didn't want to end as it took two overtimes for the Boiling Springs girls' basketball team to come away with a 69-59 victory over rival Chapman.
"When we came into the first two days of the tournament we were playing down and low so we decided to come into this game today and just play our game," said Bulldogs head coach Leslie Mills. "We got back to our intensity level that we like to bring and I'm very proud of how well the girls played." With time running down in the fourth quarter is when the excitement really began in the matchup as Chapman overcome a nine-point deficit going into the quarter. Boiling Springs held a 48-47 lead before Kylie McMillian hit one of two free throws to push their lead to 49-47 over the Panthers. With just three seconds left in the game, the Bulldogs fouled Chapman's Clara Gramling on what was called an intentional foul and Gramling was able to make both free throws to send the game into overtime at 49-49, as the Panthers were unable to get a shot up on their ensuing possession. Boiling Springs worked to fend off Chapman's run in the fourth quarter and one of the bench players that really stepped up in the quarter was Joselin Martinez-Trejo who got four points and two rebounds all in the quarter. Gramling started the overtime period with a big three-pointer to give Chapman a 52-49 lead to start the overtime period. Chapman held the lead most of the overtime period until the Bulldogs Natalie Trudell stole a Panthers pass before being fouled, she then went to the free throw line to make two of two free throws giving Boiling Springs their first lead of overtime at 55-54. Clara Gramling struck again for the Panthers on the next possession as she hit a clutch three-pointer from the left side with ten seconds left in overtime, to give Chapman a 57-55 lead. With time running down the Bulldogs Kylie McMillian drove down the court and drove to the basket for a layup that rimmed out but fellow Bulldog Dallas Smith was in the right place at the right time as she grabbed the rebound from the court and shot the ball which landed in the net just as the lights on the backboard went off signaling the end of overtime tying the Bulldogs with the Panthers at 57-57 and sending the game to a double overtime. "That was big a play from Dallas because we struggle as a team with those putback plays," said Mills. "It was a big time play from her and when she put that ball back in, I was just ecstatic." Smith also made the first basket of double overtime for the Bulldogs to give them a 59-57 lead. From that point on the Bulldogs outscored the Panthers 10-2 over the rest of the quarter, with points from Smith (2), McMillian (6), and Ezell (2), helping to seal the victory for the Bulldogs. Boiling Springs had two players finish with double-doubles against the Panthers as Kylie McMillian had 28 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, and four steals while Sarah Ezell also finished with a double-double with 20 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks, two steals, and an assist. "Those two players are super important to our success," said Mills. "When we went to a tournament last week, Sarah was down with an ankle injury, so we tried to get her to rest over the break to get ready for this tournament. Sarah came back super strong in this tournament and Kylie is also just a leading force for us at the point guard position." Clara Gramling, who was named All-Tournament for Chapman, led the Panthers and all scorers with 30 points and four steals in the game while she was joined in double figures by Krislyn Wilder who had 16 points and six rebounds. Kylie McMillian was named to the All-Tournament team for Boiling Springs after averaging 20 points and 8.6 rebounds per game for the tournament. Boiling Springs will be back in action on January 3rd in a road game against Hillcrest while Chapman will return to play in home game against Carolina on January 6th. He's doing a great job and I'm happy for him, his potential is through the roof." The fourth quarter saw Chesnee outscore the Bulldogs 11-9 as the two teams allowed a lot of players playing time late in the game. Sawyer Johnson led Chesnee in the fourth quarter with four points as Boiling Springs' Kyle Johnson led the Bulldogs with four points of his own in the quarter. "It was good being able to get a lot of guys in tonight and letting our bench guys get some time tonight which is well deserved," said Martin. Isaiah Atkins led Boiling Springs with 15 points, four rebounds, and a block. They also had two more players finish in double figures as senior Tre Locklear finished the game with 13 points and senior WJ Fowler ended the game with 12 points of his own. SPARTANBURG, SC - The Boiling Springs wrestling team continued their winning ways this season and won their first tournament since 2016 when they won the Day at the Den wrestling tournament at High Point Academy on Saturday.
The victory improves the Bulldogs record to 16-0 after winning all five of their matches in the tournament. "It feels very good to win this championship as it has been a long time coming for this team," said Bulldogs head coach Lee Thomas. "There has been a lot of hard work put in and it's our first outright tournament win since 2016. It has been six years of hard work to get this group here now." Boiling Springs started their day off in pool play where they were able to come away with a 42-33 victory over Crescent to start the day and a 63-18 victory over Battery Creek. The Bulldogs got pinfall victories in the match from Jason Blackwell, Peyton Hornack, Ayden Whisler, Trent Coppola, Xavier Goodman, JoJo Barrett, and Jacob Hill. In probably their biggest matchup of the day, the Bulldogs came away with a 36-30 victory over the 2A defending state champions Ninety-Six. "Ninety-Six is a great team no matter of classification and can wrestle with anyone in the state," said Thomas. Boiling Springs came away with pinfall victories from Luke Hillers Harrison Bradford, Jacob Dawkins. Dawkins came away with possibly the biggest win of the match as he was trailing 8-0 in points with just seconds left in the match before doing a reversal into a pinfall for a six-point victory in what could have been a four-point loss. "Jacob was losing there with thirty seconds left in the third period but was able to put himself in a spot to get the pinfall," said Thomas. "It was a huge momentum swing and a huge point swing that helped secure the victory." Ayden Whisler (9-3), Ty Nesbitt (9-3), Triston Ellison (2-0) and JoJo Barrett all captured crucial points victories in the match against Ninety-Six. Their final match of the day came against Greer, where the Bulldogs came away with a 68-12 victory for the win in the match and to seal their spot as the first ever Day at the Den champions. Boiling Springs had two players named to the All-Tournament team as JoJo Barrett and Harrison Bradford both earned the honor on Saturday, as Barrett went undefeated on Saturday. The Bulldogs will look to carry their win streak into next week in a tournament at Mauldin before going on the Christmas break and Thomas says his team's success has helped with the team's commitment. "We've talked about that we had to learn how to win and in the last few years we hadn't been as successful as we had become accustomed to being," said Thomas. "So, we're having to provide our own energy to get better at practice. The winning streak is helping with that commitment level though and proof of that is yesterday for practice we had all but two of our 44 wrestlers show up despite kids not being at school yesterday." The Bulldogs will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Mauldin for another all-day tournament, their last matches before the holiday break. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - Boiling Springs basketball went into Wednesday night's game on a five-game winning streak and at halftime the Bulldogs trailed by eight points before coming back to get a 53-46 victory over Hillcrest.
The victory improves the Bulldogs win streak to six straight games and improves their overall record to 6-2 and gives the Bulldogs a win over a Hillcrest team that was ranked top-ten in the 5A polls just last week. "It was a team win as we head a lot of guys step up and do a lot of little things to help us win tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Craig Martin. "We can enjoy the win tonight, but we still have some things to clean up as we head towards region play. We're going to take this win and the Christmas tournaments to continue to try and get better." Boiling Springs trailed 28-20 at halftime after trailing 13-10 at the end of the first quarter but the Bulldogs started the second half on a 6-0 run to cut the Hillcrest lead to 28-26 before extending that run to 10-0 on back-to-back layups from Landon Sprouse and Dominique Johnson to take a 30-28 lead. Sprouse (9) and Johnson (7) combined to score all sixteen of the Boiling Springs points in the third quarter as they took a 36-34 lead when the buzzer sounded. "Sprouse really stepped up for us," said Martin. "We've seen it in practice and it's just great seeing it starting to translate into the games now." The game went back-and-forth in the fourth quarter as the game was tied at 46-46, when senior guard London Hogan hit a three-pointer from the right corner to give the Bulldogs a 49-46 lead with a minute left. Hogan who just returned from an injury scored six points while taking four charges is a key piece to the Bulldogs success according to Coach Martin. "London done a lot of things people aren't going to see in the stat book," said Martin. "The biggest thing with him is his leadership and it's not verbal leadership but what he does in practice and how he acts. He's our glue guy that holds everyone accountable and is the type of play that is essential to having a successful team." Over the last minute of the game the Bulldogs saw Dominique Johnson go four of four from the free throw line to ice the game. Johnson continued his strong play with his second double-double in two days as he led all scorers with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and three steals. Johnson was joined in double-figures by Landon Sprouse who scored 18 points with a rebound and two steals. "Dom isn't your prototypical big guy but he plays much bigger than his height," said Martin. "He does a lot of really good things for us especially on the boards. He does a great job of fighting especially against guys that are bigger than him in the post." Boiling Springs will return to action on Tuesday as they take part in the three-day Chesnee Roundball Classic, as they kick off the tournament on Tuesday against Chesnee at 8:00 PM. GIRLS GAME The Boiling Springs girls' basketball team like their counterparts overcame a halftime deficit to come back and capture a 41-35 victory over the visiting Hillcrest Rams. The third quarter saw the Bulldogs cut the Rams lead to two points as they outscored Hillcrest 18-11 behind some strong defense that saw Sarah Ezell, Natalie Trudell, and Amiah Ellis combine for eight steals in the quarter while Ezell (6), Ellis (5), and Kylie McMillian combined to score 17 of the Bulldogs 18 points in the quarter. Amiah Ellis led the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 points while Sarah Ezell also added 10 points of her own. Ezell finished the game with a double-double as to go along with her 10 points she also dominated on the boards with 17 rebounds along with five steals. Natalie Trudell also added 8 points and 11 rebounds to go along with five steals. GREER, SC - The Boiling Springs wrestling team went on the road for a quad match on Tuesday night and when the night was over they returned back home with three victories to improve to 11-0 on the season.
"I'm super proud of the competition level our team brought tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Lee Thomas. "While the team scores may not indicate it, we had several matches where we were down late in the match and fought our way back into it and eventually won. We wrestled three complete duals and only loss three matches, which is a night I've never had before." In their first match of the night the Bulldogs defeated the homestanding Riverside Warriors 77-3 to improve to 9-0 on the season. Boiling Springs got seven pinfall victories against the Warriors while JoJo Barrett also grabbed a major victory (20-3) to help lead the Bulldogs. Boiling Springs capped the night off extinguishing the Blue Flames of Pickens by a score of 77-6 to finish the night 3-0. The Bulldogs added nine pinfall victories in the match to give them a combined total of 26 pinfall victories in the three matches. "I'm hoping we can use this momentum to head into the weekend and compete for a dual tournament championship over at High Point," said Thomas. Boiling Springs will return to action on Saturday at High Point in an all-day dual tournament. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs basketball team started a two-night homestand and was able to grab the season series over Union County with a 61-48 victory on Tuesday night.
The victory is the fifth straight win for the Bulldogs as they haven't loss since the opening two games of the season. "We did a lot of good things and are trying to continue to build on the previous games and practices each time out," said Bulldogs head coach Craig Martin. "Union is well coached and are a good team which is only helping us as we head towards region play. I think in spurts we looked good but also saw areas we need work, but we were able to get a lot of kids in tonight." Boiling Springs got out to an early lead on the back of senior forward Dominique Johnson who scored seven points in the opening quarter to give the Bulldogs a 15-7 lead at the end of the quarter. Johnson continued his strong play this season on Tuesday night as he registered a double-double scoring 13 points, 14 rebounds, and five steals. "Dom does a great job especially when he commits to rebounding on both sides," said Martin. "It makes us so much better, giving us second chances on the offensive side and helping to start runs on the defensive side. It's something that people don't always look at but tonight his rebounds on defense led to a lot of easy baskets on the offensive end." The second quarter saw Boiling Springs start the quarter on a 7-0 run which was led by senior guard Tre Locklear who scored nine points of the Bulldogs fifteen points in the quarter on the way to a 30-21 halftime lead. The Bulldogs went on another run to start the second half going on a 9-0 run over the first three minutes of the quarter. They extended that lead to 41-21 at the four-minute mark before Union scored their first bucket of the quarter on a floater down the lane by Keyshon Hardon. Boiling Springs kept the twenty-point advantage most of the quarter as they held a 50-32 lead at the end of the third quarter. Over the final ten minutes of the game the Bulldogs were able to get most everyone in the game as all but three players on the team recorded a point. Martin said the experience is important for the team but that no matter what players on the court that the expectations don't change. "We have a lot of guys on that bench that are committed to being the best players they can be for us and lots of times it's when people don't get to see it," said Martin. "They deserve that time when we can get it to them but when they get that time, they have to execute which is no different from anyone else on the team. I'm glad those guys got the opportunity to play tonight because they deserve it from all the work they put in." While Dominique Johnson registered a double-double, Boiling Springs was led in scoring by Tre Locklear who led all scorers in the game with 22 points. Nathan Keopke led Union in scoring with 14 points and was joined in double figures by Keishawn Gibson who added 12 points on Tuesday night. Coach Martin says the Bulldogs back-to-back games against quality opponents like Union County and Hillcrest is only going to make his team better as they head towards region play. "Union County and Hillcrest are both well coached teams," said Martin. "Hillcrest is one of the biggest challenges we'll have faced this year and we're looking forward to it because it'll give us an idea to see where we're at as a team. They're a team similar to what we'll see in region and it's a great opportunity for our team in our last home game before the break." Boiling Springs will play the second night of their final homestand before the Christmas break on Wednesday when they welcome the Hillcrest Rams with the girls' game slated to start at 6:00 PM. GIRLS GAME The Boiling Springs girls team backed up their impressive win over Union County earlier this year with another strong win as they defeated the Yellow Jackets 63-25 in front of a large crowd. Boiling Springs jumped out to an early 11-5 lead thanks in large part to a strong start from senior Amiah Ellis who scored eight of the team's points in the quarter. In the second quarter Ellis continued her strong play scoring six points but was also joined by Kylie McMillian who scored seven points to start what turned out to be a big night for McMillian. The Bulldogs defense held the Yellow Jackets to just three points in the second quarter as McMillian, Ellis, and Brynn Tipton combined for 12 steals in the first half. McMillian ended her night with a double-double but was just two assists shy of a triple double as she finished the night with 14 points, 12 steals, eight assists, and six rebounds. In the third quarter Boiling Springs continued to add on to their lead outscoring Union County 15-11 behind a strong quarter from sophomore Dakota Smith who scored six points to lead the Bulldogs. Boiling Springs left no doubt in the fourth quarter as they outscored Union County 19-6 as Sarah Ezell led the Bulldogs in the quarter with 12 points in the quarter on their way to the victory. Sarah Ezell led all scorers with 16 points to go along with six rebounds, one steal, and a block while Amiah Ellis finished just behind with 15 points, two rebounds, and five steals. Clarissa Land led Union County with 12 points and six rebounds. The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday night against Hillcrest. The Bulldogs not only came away with two championships but also came away with five awards overall. "We had a great time being able to take to take our group of girls to the Greenwood Girls Invitational," said Boiling Springs head coach Lee Thomas. "With our varsity team being off, it allowed us to focus on our girls who wrestled tough throughout the night. Regardless of which group you're with, when you can bring home medals for every person on the bus it's a fun event." Chloe Osteen won the championship in the 106 division while Rebecca Blackwell was also able to come away with the championship in the 152 division. Anastasia Kunitska won silver in the 145 division while Sophia LeBrun (126) and Logan Wall (160) came away with bronze place finishes. All five girls that competed in the event and won awards are members of the Bulldogs wrestling program that is currently undefeated with a record of 8-0 on the season. Boiling Springs wrestling will return to action on Tuesday in a quad match at Riverside against the home team Warriors, Pickens, and Palmetto. CHESNEE, SC - In their second matchup in a week, the matchup on Friday night at Chesnee saw the Bulldogs and Eagles playing in front of an electric crowd as Boiling Springs eventually came away with a 65-37 victory.
After a close first half saw the Bulldogs leading 27-18 at halftime, it was a big third quarter performance from a senior guard that saw the Bulldogs pull away to a thirty-point lead at the end of the third quarter. The Bulldogs started the quarter on a 14-4 run over the first four minutes of the quarter before finishing the quarter on a 13-2 run over the last four minutes to grab a 54-24 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Bulldogs run out of halftime was led by senior guard Tre Locklear who scored 16 points in the quarter, as he led all scorers in the game with 27 points. "We got exactly what we expected from Tre as one of our leaders," said Bulldogs head coach Craig Martin. "He has been real consistent all year and he picked it up tonight. He made some shots and made his teammates better tonight." In the fourth quarter the teams were pretty even as the Eagles outscored the Bulldogs 13-11 on the way to the final score of 65-37 in favor of the Bulldogs. In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs had a lot of new faces step up and play well which Coach Martin said he was happy to see from his guys. "We had a lot of guys step up tonight including the guys that came in there at the end," said Martin. "I think they did a great job of continuing on what we've been working on in practice and that's what made the proudest of those guys." The first half saw Boiling Springs jump out to an 18-7 first quarter lead as Locklear scored seven points but it was the presence of senior forward Dominique Johnson on the boards that allowed the Bulldogs numerous second chances to extend their lead. Chesnee cut into the Bulldogs lead in the second quarter as they outscored Boiling Springs 11-9 to put their halftime lead to nine points. The victory for the Bulldogs extends their winning streak to four games and pushes their record to 4-2 on the early season but Martin says it's good for his team to get the feeling of winning even though they still have room for improvement. "You can tell the guys are happy with what they're doing and the deserve to be excited about that," said Martin. "At the same time, I think they realize we have to continue improving each day at practice and with every opportunity we get." Boiling Springs was led in scoring by Tre Locklear who had 27 points with four rebounds and a steal. Dominique Johnson led the Bulldogs on the boards with 6 points and 12 rebounds along with two steals. "Dom plays a lot bigger than what he is," said Martin. "We challenged him tonight to work the boards which he did and it's not the first time he's done it. When he wants to control the boards, he can do just that." Chesnee was led on offense by Dawson Pruitt and Elijah Brown who both had seven points on Friday night while Daniel Wease led them on the boards with eight rebounds to go along with three points. GIRLS GAME In the girls' game the Boiling Springs basketball team used a big second half to defeat Chesnee 54-38 on Friday night. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs wrestling team improved to 6-0 on the season after coming away with impressive victories over some tough local teams on Wednesday night.
Boiling Springs came away with victories over Crest (NC), Landrum, and the last year's state runner-up Hillcrest. "I think we wrestled well and are on the right path," said Bulldogs head coach Lee Thomas. "The biggest takeaway of tonight is that our losses were hard fought mental victories, and we didn't just give up six." In the first match of the night the Bulldogs defeated Landrum 78-6 to start the quad match on Wednesday night. Boiling Springs got pins against the Cardinals from Xavier Goodman, JoJo Barrett, Tyrell Nesbitt, Jason Blackwell, Peyton Hornack, and Matthew Emory. They also got decision victories from JoJo Barrett, Tyrell Nesbitt, Easton Tipton, Jason Blackwell, Jacob Hill, and Ayden Whisler. Thomas said that he was proud of the way his team fought against a very good Hillcrest team. "With us just losing just one decision to team with the pedigree of Hillcrest is such a confidence boost to the bench," said Thomas. "It mentally makes showing up to practice tomorrow a little easier knowing you lost a hard-fought match by one, rather than getting stuck and giving up six points." Boiling Springs' final match of the night saw them come away with another impressive win as they defeated Crest (NC) 66-18 to finish out the night 3-0 and improve the Bulldogs to 6-0 on the season. The Bulldogs in the match got 10 pins with Jacob Dawkins starting the match with a pin at 180 and the final pin came from Xavier Goodman at 160.
