With the crowd sitting on the edge of their seats and time running quickly off the clock Boiling Springs was trailing by one when Bulldogs senior Meghan Scharpenberg released her three-point shot attempt that proceeded to bank off the backboard before falling through the net giving Boiling Springs a 44-42 victory over the visiting Byrnes Rebels. "That was an exciting way to start off the second half of the region season," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. "I knew our girls had this in them all year because most of our losses we've beaten ourselves. Meghan was wide open there because our team made the right passes and she hit the shot." Boiling Springs got out to an early lead in the first quarter holding on to a 13-7 lead behind seven points from senior guard Arissa Edwards. In the second quarter Byrnes jumped out in front of the Bulldogs using an 11-0 run that was started by Najah Gilliam who accounted for the first five points of the quarter for the Rebels and was continued on by Savannah Porterfield who scored eight points in the quarter. The Byrnes run was ended by Scharpenberg who scored four consecutive points and the Bulldogs reclaimed the lead on two made free throws by Danielle Brock. Both teams exchanged baskets as time ran out in the half and sat tied at 22-22 when the halftime buzzer sounded. In the third quarter both teams battled using tough defenses to limit the other team to single digit points in the quarter but the Bulldogs claimed a 29-28 lead at the end of the quarter which is something that Coach Lytle said was a focus in pregame for the Bulldogs. "We're usually close in the first half of most games this year but we just seem to go cold in the third quarter," said Lytle. "I challenged them pregame for us to have a plus one quarter and that's just what they done as we lead 29-28 at the end of the quarter. That plus one and our defensive rotation won us that game." In the fourth quarter Byrnes once again went on a run to start the quarter outscoring the Bulldogs 6-2 and holding a 34-31 lead and continued to hold a lead until just eighteen seconds were left in the game when Arissa Edwards hit two free throws to give Boiling Springs a 41-40 lead. With just twelve seconds left Boiling Springs committed a foul sending the Rebels Savannah Porterfield to the line where she hit both free throws giving Byrnes a 42-41 lead. With time running out the Bulldogs Arissa Edwards raced down the court towards the Boiling Springs basket before passing it to Laisha Labra in the right corner of the court who then drove left finding Scharpenberg for the game winning shot that caused the home crowd to erupt in celebration. "We told Arissa to drive hard to the basket and for our shooters to spot up and that's exactly what they done," said Lytle. "We were joking with one of our coaches that works at a bank during the day that it seems they left the bank open just long enough for us to get this victory." Boiling Springs was led on offense by Arissa Edwards who scored sixteen points and Meghan Scharpenberg who finished the night with thirteen points. Porterfield led the Rebels on Friday night with fifteen points while also getting ten points from Jada Burton. With the victory the Bulldogs picked up a win to start their second trip through region play which could give the Bulldogs some momentum heading into another key matchup at Spartanburg on Tuesday night. "It's great because it shows the girls they have the potential to compete with the big three teams in our region," said Lytle. "It shows them that we're right there too and I look forward to what we can do in the second half of this season." Big Third Quarter Allows Rebels To Defeat BulldogsOn Friday night the Byrnes Rebels used a thirty point third quarter to run away with a 96-58 victory over the Boiling Springs Bulldogs on Friday night.
After falling down early in their last matchup the Bulldogs kept it close in the first quarter as Byrnes led the Bulldogs 23-13 at the end of the quarter thanks in large part to the efforts of senior Jordon Askew who scored eleven of the Bulldogs thirteen points. The Bulldogs were able to keep the deficit close in the second quarter getting key shots from Trey McManus, Corey Johnson, and Brylie Marcum to keep the Rebels lead at twelve trailing only 43-31 as the halftime buzzer sounded. In the third quarter the Rebels came out of halftime outscoring the Bulldogs 30-14 in the quarter on their way to a 73-45 lead heading in the fourth quarter. The Rebels had seven players score in the quarter but were led by Nick Thiele who scored ten of his nineteen points in the quarter. Byrnes was led on Friday night by Tay Bruton who scored twenty-two points and Dessje Canty who scored twenty points. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Jordon Askew who finished the night with thirteen points while also getting eleven points from Khalil Brown and Brylie Marcum. The Bulldogs will look to rebound on Tuesday night as they travel to take on Spartanburg in another region matchup. As the first trip through region play came to an end on Tuesday night the Boiling Springs Bulldogs used big games from Corey Johnson and Khalil Brown along with some clutch free throws from Trey McManus to pick up their first region win with a 69-67 victory over Hillcrest. "It was a good night for us," said Bulldogs head coach Hal McManus. "We've been struggling here lately but our kids have kept battling even though things haven't gone our way. I'm glad to see the hard work pay off and they fought from the tip all the way to the end of the game." Boiling Springs who has struggled shooting the ball some this season got off to a hot start on Tuesday night as senior Jordon Askew hit a three pointer to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead on their way to a 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Junior Corey Johnson led the way for the Bulldogs in the first quarter as he and Trey McManus combined for eleven of the Bulldogs eighteen first quarter points. In the second quarter the Rams made a run to catch up to the Bulldogs as they outscored Boiling Springs 22-16 behind seven points from sophomore Jeremy Bland and made the Bulldogs lead 34-26 when the halftime buzzer sounded. When the third quarter started Corey Johnson picked backup where he left off in the first half as he drove to the basket making a contested layup while also being fouled to open the Bulldogs second half off with a three point play the old fashioned way. In the third quarter Johnson scored eight of his game high twenty-five points for the Bulldogs. "Scoring twenty-five points and going ten for ten from the free throw line was great to see for Corey," said McManus. "I know he has been frustrated here recently shooting the ball and to see him breakthrough tonight is great to see and I think it continue over for him the rest of the year." While Johnson had a great quarter for the Bulldogs, Hillcrest senior Zion Bruster had a pretty impressive quarter himself scoring thirteen third quarter points in the quarter connecting on three deep three-pointers and going two for two from the free throw line. Bruster accounted for thirteen of the Rams' twenty-two points in the quarter as they were able to keep pace with the Bulldogs in the quarter as they trailed Boiling Springs 55-48 when the third quarter ended. In the fourth quarter Hillcrest got the first bucket of the quarter but Boiling Springs quickly responded when Johnson hit a three pointer from the right side to set up a battle between the two teams as the game headed for the finish line. Hillcrest was able to get the Boiling Springs lead to 62-60 with forty-seven seconds ;eft in the game but sophomore Trey McManus stepped tp the line and hit both free throws expanding the Bulldogs lead to 64-60. "I was excited for him in that moment because I knew he wanted that chance to hit those free throws," said McManus, about his son Trey shooting the late free throws. "He was tough and made five out of six there at the end and showed a lot of guts hitting those free throws to seal the victory." McManus went to the line again to extend the lead to 66-62 but it was a steal by sophomore Khalil Brown that sealed the game and sent McManus back to the free throw line to finish the game off. Brown had a great night for the Bulldogs coming up with key steals and also scoring seventeen points on Tuesday night. "Khalil is always in the right spot and improves every time that he's in the gym," said McManus. "He's the ultimate team player because he may not score a point in the game but he's going to do something to effect the game in a positive way. Offensively and defensively he just always know what to do." The Bulldogs saw three players finish in double figures on Tuesday night as Corey Johnson led the way with twenty-five points while Khalil Brown had seventeen and Trey McManus added ten points. They also got a good night from senior Jordon Askew who added eight points in the game. Hillcrest also had three players finish in double figures as Zion Bruster led the way with seventeen points while AJ Allenspach finished with fifteen points and Jeremy Bland added twelve points of his own. With the victory the Bulldogs will now look to carry that momentum into the second half of region play as they host Byrnes on Friday night in another region matchup. "We've got a tough matchup against Byrnes on Friday night and they have a great team," said McManus. "We're going to go to work over the next couple of days and can't see if we can't get a win here on Friday night." Late Rams Run Downs Lady Bulldogs On Tuesday NightWith five minutes to go in the game the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Rams were tied but Hillcrest went on a 12-3 run to finish the game and capture a 41-32 win on Tuesday night.
The game got started slow as Hillcrest held a 7-5 lead at the end of the first quarter while all five of the Bulldogs points coming from Arissa Edwards and five of the Rams seven points coming from Karessa Hill. The Bulldogs outscored the Rams 10-8 in the second quarter to tie the game at 15-15 when the halftime buzzer sounded but the Rams had clung to a 15-8 lead before the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run over the last three minutes of the quarter. In the third quarter the Bulldogs clawed closer as they were within one at the end of the quarter thanks to six points from Meghan Scharpenberg. Arissa Edwards hit the first shot of the fourth quarter connecting on a three-pointer from the left corner to put the Bulldogs up 27-25 for their first lead of the game. Hillcrest then went on a 4-0 run before Laisha Labra tied the game at 29-29 with just over five minutes to go in the game. At that point is when the Rams went on a 12-0 run that was finally ended when the Bulldogs scored the final three points of the game but it was too late for Boiling Springs as the Rams had sealed the victory. The Bulldogs will next take the court when they host region rival Byrnes on Friday night. On Friday night the Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs picked up their first region win of the season behind great guard play from junior Laisha Labra and senior Arissa Edwards as the Bulldogs came away with a 35-25 road victory over the Gaffney Indians. "We needed that win," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. "We knew that for us to have a chance at the playoffs we needed this one. It's also great just to finally get that first region win, I would have taken a one point win as long as we got the win." Over the first four minutes of the game the Bulldogs couldn't find their way onto the scoreboard with the Bulldogs trailing 6-0 but soon Arissa Edwards got the first score of the game and got the Bulldogs on the board. After Edwards scored the Bulldogs Laisha Labra went on a 5-0 run of her own scoring two layups and a free throw to lead the Bulldogs in scoring for the quarter with five points and giving Boiling Springs a 7-6 lead after the first quarter. "Laisha stepped up big for us tonight," said Lytle. "She was hurt the last two games but she came back strong and produced just like we needed her to tonight." In the second quarter the Bulldogs outscored the Indians 7-4 and claimed a 14-10 halftime lead getting scores from Edwards, D'Marria Glenn, and Meghan Scharpenberg. In the third quarter it was all Edwards for the Bulldogs as she scored all eight of the Bulldogs points and finished in a tie with the Gaffney team in the third quarter to keep the Bulldogs lead at four points and claiming a 22-18 lead going into the final quarter. The Bulldogs were leading by six just before the third quarter buzzer sounded but Gaffney's A'Maurya Tate-Smith made a great hook shot from the right side of the basket to get the Indians two points closer heading into the fourth quarter. When the fourth quarter arrived Labra decided to follow Edwards example and have a big quarter of her own by scoring seven of the Bulldogs thirteen points in the quarter. Labra got the quarter started by hitting a big three pointer from the left side of the court and then hit another three pointer in the quarter to stop any hope for a Gaffney rally. "I have so much confidence in our guards because they put in so much work during the offseason," said Lytle. "With Laisha being a junior we knew we had to groom her to take over with Arissa being a senior and graduating this year. With the way she is playing she is proving that we made the right decision." In the fourth quarter Edwards hit a free throw and with that led the Bulldogs in scoring on Friday night with fourteen points. Labra finished the night with thirteen points of her own as both players combined to score twenty-six of the Bulldogs thirty-five points. Glenn and Scharpenberg also added to the Bulldogs total as they combined for the other nine Boiling Springs points on Friday night. Boiling Springs will next return to the court on Tuesday night as they host Hillcrest to finish out the first half of region play. The Bulldogs fell behind 10-2 in the early part of the first quarter but were able to battle back and trailed by only one at 17-16 when the quarter ended. The Bulldogs even took the lead twice in the quarter after Cam Earls and Trey McManus both hit three pointers and were leading 17-14 before Gaffney finished on a 4-0 run to take the first quarter lead. In the third quarter Gaffney had a 42-33 lead with just over three minutes left but the Bulldogs finished the quarter on an 8-2 run to put the game at 44-40 in favor of the Indians. Gaffney was able to hold on to the lead thanks to a big third quarter by junior Undre Lindsay who scored twelve of his game high eighteen points in the third quarter in which Gaffney scored fourteen points. Boiling Springs was led in scoring on Friday night by Cam Earls who scored thirteen points and was followed on the scoring sheet by Khalil Brown and Jordon Askew who both scored eight points. In the first quarter it was all Adams as she scored all eight of the Mavericks points in the quarter and the Bulldogs struggled early only scoring three points mainly due to seven turnovers by the Bulldogs in the quarter. In the second quarter the Bulldogs got things sorted out as they outscored the Mavericks 11-6 in the quarter on their way to tying the game at 14-14 when the halftime buzzer sounded. The Bulldogs got their first lead of the game when Meghan Scharpenberg hit a three pointer from the left side to take a 13-10 lead but most of the offense in the second quarter came from Arissa Edwards who scored seven of the Bulldogs eleven points in the quarter. Laisha Labra led the way for the Bulldogs in the quarter as she scored five points in the quarter including the three pointer that gave the Bulldogs the lead. In the fourth quarter Boiling Springs led 31-27 with just under four minutes to go in the game but back to back baskets by the Mavericks including the tying layup from Ashia Austin off a steal by Adams put the score at 31-31 with just over two and a half minutes to go in the game. The Bulldogs retook the lead when Edwards hit her first free throw and then after missing the second the Bulldogs D'Marria Glenn was able to make the lead 34-31 on a put-back layup with under two minutes left. Mauldin tied the game on a three-pointer by Lauren Wearbon from the top left of the floor and then took the lead on a layup by Adams who put the Mavericks up 36-34 with just forty-five second left in regulation. In the second overtime Adams took over the game as she scored five points in an 8-2 run by Mauldin to come away with the victory. While Mauldin's Jalani Adams led all scorers with thirty-two points she wasn't the only player to score in double figures as Boiling Springs' Arissa Edwards scored twenty points and Meghan Scharpenberg finished the night with ten points. The Rebels added to their first quarter performance with another impressive performance in the second quarter as they outscored the Bulldogs 21-8 on their way to a 41-12 halftime lead which was led by Dessie Canty who scored eight of his game high seventeen points in the quarter. The second half was pretty even between the two teams as the Rebels outscored the Bulldogs 32-29 and with their first half lead allowed Byrnes to grab their first region win in the new year.
