BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs baseball honored their eight seniors, who have helped write a lot of Bulldog history, by picking up a big 5-0 region victory over Nation Ford on Wednesday night.
Boiling Springs recognized the accomplishments of seniors Tristan Smith, Ashton Smith, Davis Starnes, Brent Fowler, Jackson Kostiuk, Landon Ellis, Richie Lewis, and Dylan Anderson in a pregame ceremony to thank them for their years in the Bulldogs program. "All eight of our seniors have been a joy to coach," said Bulldogs head coach Jeff Lipscomb. "They've never caused me a second of trouble and they're a dedicated bunch of guys especially in the weight room. They show up every day and play hard which is all you can really ask of a kid. We try to preach to our kids to just do right and these seniors are those type of guys." Boiling Springs got a complete game shutout on the mound from four of their seniors which started with four innings from Tristan Smith who struck out eight batters while only allowing one hit. Smith was followed by Richie Lewis on the mound who allowed only one hit while striking out one Falcons batter before Jackson Kostiuk followed Lewis not allowing a runner on base and striking out one batter himself. Davis Starnes ended the game for the Bulldogs on the mound not allowing a runner and also striking out a batter. Coach Lipscomb said they used a wide range of pitchers on Wednesday because they know they'll need those guys once the playoffs begin next week. "We started with Tristan and he was good as usual but we wanted to keep his pitch count low going into the playoffs next week," said Lipscomb. "Then Richie followed him with a good outing despite limited mound time this year and I told him and Jackson Kostiuk that we're going to need them in the playoffs. We know in the playoffs we're going to need arms that haven't pitched a lot during the season and we're excited about what they're going to give us going forward." On the offensive side of the ball for the Bulldogs, they got their first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning when Richie Lewis reached base on a bunt single before coming around to score from first base on a single to right centerfield by catcher Hudson Wilson to give Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead. The bottom of the fourth inning was the biggest offensive inning of the game for the Bulldogs as they scored three runs in the inning, which started with a single to left field by Davis Starnes. Starnes advanced to second base on a groundout up the middle before advancing to third base on a single to left field by Jackson Reel and then scoring on a single to centerfield by Ashton Smith to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0 over the Falcons. Reel made the Bulldogs lead 3-0 when he came home to score on a single to centerfield by Richie Lewis before Ashton Smith scored on a bunt single by Luke Compton to give Boiling Springs a 4-0 lead. With one out in the fifth inning, Davis Starnes reached base on a single to leftfield before stealing second base. Stanes made the Bulldogs lead 5-0 when he came home to score on a single to centerfield by Jackson Reel helping to secure the Bulldogs victory. Boiling Springs will return to the field on Friday night when they close out their regular season with a road game against the same Nation Ford team. The Bulldogs will then start the first round of the 5A playoffs on Tuesday night where they will host Northwestern. Lipscomb said it's not going to be hard for his guys to stay focused heading into the playoffs as he says they know what their ultimate goal is for this season. "I don't have to do anything to motivate these guys because they motivate themselves," said Lipscomb. "Any time you have a group you don't have to say much to other than just tell them what the lineup is, that's a special group. They don't need extra motivation from me because they're always ready to play and we're confident going into the playoffs with this group." RUTHERFERTON, NC - It may have taken a little extra time than originally planned and he had to dodge a short rainstorm, but Boiling Springs junior golfer Andrew Gregory was able to capture the individual championship at the second annual TC Ezell Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
Gregory finished the day tied at 75 over the original eighteen holes but on the first playoff hole (the tenth hole) came away with a birdie to defeat Mauldin's Jay Wilkins for the medalist honor. He said that his day was kind of an up and down tournament but was glad to come away with the victory. "The round started off good as I made a birdie on the first hole but then it kind of went downhill as I double bogeyed the ninth hole," said Gregory. "I was able to get it back together on the back nine though as I birdied fifteen and sixteen, but it was still an up and down kind of day. On the playoff hole though I had a great drive and wedge shot along with a really straight putt and I was able to get the victory." Gregory likes the momentum he built from this victory along with the lessons he learned from the up and down day he had on the course. "This win gives me some confidence heading into the region tournament next week," said Gregory. "I played pretty decent but I also saw the areas I need to work on and we'll get it done before region play starts up." With the victory Gregory was also named to the All-Tournament team that included fellow Bulldog golfer Walker Ingram (76), Chesnee's Peyton Lawter (78), Gaffney's Ben Smith (76), and Mid-Carolina's Luke Hammond (76). Mauldin also had three players named to the All-Tournament team as Jay Wilkins (75), Glenn Oxner (77), and Alex Franklin (78) all joined the other five golfers on the All-Tournament team. On the team side of the event the Bulldogs came up just short finishing in second place with a score of 315, just four shots behind tournament champion Mauldin who shot a score of 311. The tournament in it's second year of existence had a mixture of talented from all over the state, as it continues to grow with the number of teams and participants. "We had teams from all over the state today from different levels and it was just a nice mix of teams," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt, whose team is the host school of the tournament. "We have a lot of room for growth for next year and it was a nice day for golf minus a short rain shower as we got the opportunity to remember the memory of a great man in Mr. Ezell." The tournament marks its second year of being named after former Chesnee principal Tom Ezell, who Pitt says was a big advocate of golf in the community, and funds from the tournament are donated to a scholarship fund in his name, which Pitt says he's glad to be able to contribute to each year. "Mr Ezell was our principal when I first got to Chesnee and after he passed away, I asked his wife Sharon if I could name this tournament after him because he loved the game of golf and she gave me her blessing," said Pitt. "After we named the tournament the TC Ezell Invitational (formerly named the Eagle Invitational) we started selling shirts and hats in the community where all the proceeds go to the scholarship fund which allowed us today to share with her a check of $500 that goes towards that fund. It adds to the scholarship fund and helps guarantee one more kid will have a chance to help pay for school." The host school Chesnee also had a good showing as they came away with a sixth-place finish of the fourteen-team tournament, finishing ahead of all of their fellow 2A schools which Coach Pitt sees as a positive for his team as they continue to get better as the season goes along. They were led by Lawter with a score of 78 and Creighton Rentz who shot a score of 83 on Tuesday. "As a team we're moving in the right direction as we head towards this part of the season," said Pitt. "I was really proud of how Peyton Lawter and Creighton Rentz today as Peyton made the All-Tournament team and Creighton if not for one mistake on the back nine could have been in the 70's himself. Our other guys are also moving in the right direction with the region tournament time bearing down on us." Boiling Springs golf will next take to the course on Tuesday when they travel to the Chester Golf Club to compete in the Region III-5A tournament. Chesnee golf will next play in the Ponderosa Shootout on Thursday before getting ready to play in their region tournament a week from Monday. Baseball Boiling Springs 7 Fort Mill 1 Boiling Springs baseball rebounded from a loss to the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday with a 7-1 victory at home in another region matchup. ROEBUCK, SC - With their first-round playoff victory on Wednesday night, the Boiling Springs lacrosse team set two pieces of history for their program in their 18-12 victory over Dorman as it was their first ever playoff win and was also their first victory over county rival Cavaliers.
"It's an amazing feeling to pick up our first ever playoff victory," said Bulldogs head coach Justin Mills. "These kids fought hard for all four quarters and deserve all the recognition that comes to them from this win. All season we've gotten down early but fought back and they knew it was either win or go home and they weren't going to be sent home." Boiling Springs senior Micah Shane Horton said the victory is big but says the Bulldogs still have goals left to accomplish ahead of them. "It's an incredible feeling to pick up this win and pick up not only our first win in the playoffs but also our first win over Dorman," said Horton. "To be able to help lead the team to such a big win I'm just speechless. Our journey isn't over yet and we still have a lot of lacrosse left to play." Boiling Springs brought a lot of energy from the very first faceoff, that was only added to by the large fanbase that had made the journey to Dorman and almost made it a home field advantage for the visitors. The Bulldogs used that energy to grab their first two goals of the match as Elijah Smith fired a left-handed shot into the net for a 1-0 lead just under a minute into the match before Lincoln Huskey fired a left-handed shot of his own into the net to give Boiling Springs a 2-0 lead with over ten minutes to go in the first quarter. After Dorman scored to make their lead 2-1, the Bulldogs got back-to-back goals from Huskey and Micah Shane Horton to push the Boiling Springs lead to 4-1 over the Cavaliers. Dorman scored the next five goals in the first quarter to take a 6-4 lead into the second quarter. Boiling Springs bounced back in the second quarter as Mathis Oslund (2), Chase Miller, and Huskey scored the first four goals of the second quarter to give the Bulldogs an 8-6 lead. Dorman scored the next three goals to take a 9-8 lead that looked like they were going to take into halftime until Micah Shane Horton took the faceoff and fired a right-handed shot just inside the box with seventeen seconds left in the half to tie the match at 9-9, the same score it would be when the halftime buzzer sounded. The Cavaliers took a 10-9 lead coming out of halftime but the Bulldogs outscored Dorman 5-1 the rest of the quarter to give Boiling Springs a 14-11 lead. The Bulldogs scoring got started with a right-handed goal off an assist from behind the goal to start the Boiling Springs run that also included goals from Mathis Oslund, Elijah Smith (2), and Kaden Jenkins. Dorman closed the lead to 14-12 just two minutes into the fourth quarter and that's all they'd be able to get as the Bulldogs defense swarmed the Cavaliers offense, not allowing them to score again on Wednesday night. Boiling Springs freshman goalkeeper Parker Lamb was starting his first ever playoff game on Wednesday night and finished the night with 15 saves as the Bulldogs defense controlled the net and possession of groundballs. "You can go down the list of the guys on our defense that done a great job from our freshman goalie to our starting defense," said Mills. "That was the difference tonight as our defense showed up and just showed out especially the freshman goalie playing in his first ever playoff game." Boiling Springs senior defenseman Jordan Reid said that the victory is special as a senior and that the defense's lockdown in the fourth quarter comes from their bond as a team and being able to communicate without even saying a word. "It's unbelievable to pick up this win because we have a great group here that's like a brotherhood," said Reid. "Our defense to me is the best in the state this year as we all form well together. We communicate well together even when we're not speaking because we know what the other guy is thinking and that comes from the bond we've built over time." The Bulldogs added four more goals over the final eight minutes in the fourth quarter as Elijah Smith added two more goals, for five goals on the night, as well as goals from Chase Miller and Kaden Jenkins. Boiling Springs will now move to the second round of the 5A playoffs as they travel to JL Mann for a match that is scheduled to start at 3:00 PM and it's a match Mills and his team are looking forward to playing. "It's amazing to be moving on to the second round of the playoffs," said Mills. Jackson Cole started out his impressive night by striking out the first batter he faced as he went six innings while striking out seven batters and only allowing one run. In the bottom of the first inning with one out Bulldogs catcher Hudson Wilson reached base on a Gaffney error before Richie Lewis, who ran for Wilson, advanced to third base on ground rule double by Tristan Smith down the left field line before scoring on a Gaffney wild pitch to give Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead.
