With the home crowd celebrating homecoming on Friday night the Bulldogs defense had one of their best performances of the season as they helped lead Boiling Springs to a 16-6 victory over the visiting Mauldin Mavericks. The Bulldogs defense only allowed the Mavericks offense one-hundred and fifty one yards while forcing four turnovers.
"I think we got them out of what they were trying to do," said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. "I'm really proud of our guys, we gave up big scores two weeks in a row and it would have been easy for these guys to quit but they've came back and fought hard." The first half was a back and forth affair between the two teams but the Boiling Springs offense was on its way into the end zone with just over two minutes to go in the half when Mauldin's Devon Scott forced a Boiling Springs fumble that was returned ninety-eight yards for a touchdown by Elias Garza to give the Mavericks a 6-0 halftime lead. The Bulldogs almost took the lead at halftime but a ninety-six yard interception return for a touchdown by Dre Pinckney was called back for a block in the back on the return. When the second half started the Bulldogs defense forced a three-and-out by the Mavericks and on fourth down Mauldin mishandled the snap and it was recovered by Boiling Springs' Moffett Graves at the Mauldin sixteen yard line. After the fumble recovery the Bulldogs cashed in on the turnover when quarterback Aaron Thomas ran the ball in from one yard out giving Boiling Springs a 7-6 lead at the end of the third quarter. At the start of the fourth quarter the Mavericks were able to move the ball to the Boiling Springs thirty-five yard line but that drive was soon ended when the Bulldogs defense forced another Mavericks fumble that was recovered by Moffett Graves again this time for a sixty-one yard return to the Mauldin six yard line. The Boiling Springs offense capitalized on the turnover on the very next play when running back Charles McFadden Jr ran the ball in from six yards out to give the Bulldogs a 14-6 lead. The Bulldogs defense soon added two more points of their own when they forced an intentional grounding penalty by the Mauldin quarterback that was in the end zone resulting in a safety and a 16-6 Boiling Springs lead. The game was ended with another great defensive play as Dre Pinckney intercepted his second pass of the game to help seal the Bulldogs victory. "We played more together as a team last week and it just carried over to this week," said Coach Tate. "I'm just really proud of these kids." The Bulldogs are now 2-1 in region play and will look to improve on that record next week as they travel to Spartanburg who lost to Dorman 34-33 on Friday night. Congratulations to Boiling Springs Golf Team Member MK Talledo on being named the Boiling Springs Sports Journal Athlete of the Week. MK was named to the All-Tournament team of the WSCGA Junior Golf Foundation Championship at Cat Island that was won by Boiling Springs. The Boiling Springs Sports Journal Athlete of the Week is Chesnee running back Josh Russell. Russell led the Eagles with 114 yard rushing on 18 carries in the Eagles' loss to the Blacksburg Wildcats.
A region matchup that has been decided on key plays over the last few years was decided pretty early on Friday night as the Dorman Cavaliers captured a 56-14 victory over Boiling Springs.
The Cavaliers jumped on the board first when Zack Hillstock lined up in a wildcat formation and ran the ball in from eight yards out to put the Cavaliers up 7-0 with 6:37 left in the first quarter. Dorman's offense would score again on their next drive when quarterback Matthew Powell found wide receiver Kamal Desor, who played for Boiling Springs last season, on a sixty yard touchdown pass to put the Cavaliers up 14-0 with 2:48 left in the first quarter. With just thirteen seconds left in the first quarter the Cavaliers added another score when Thomas Morgan ran the ball in from thirty yards out to put Dorman up 21-0 at the end of the first quarter. At the start of the second quarter the Boiling Springs offense finally got on the board when quarterback Aaron Thomas found wide receiver Reggie Crocker on a twenty-five yard touchdown pass to put the Dorman lead at 21-7 with 9:34 left in the half. On the next Dorman drive the Bulldogs defense seemed to have held the Cavaliers to a three-and-out but a late pass interference call kept the drive alive for the Cavaliers. On the very next play Dorman's Thomas Morgan scored his second touchdown of the game, this time on a forty-eight yard run to put the score at 28-7 in favor of the Cavaliers. When the Cavaliers offense got the ball back Zack Hillstock was able to get his second touchdown of the game on a fourteen yard run to give the Cavaliers a 35-7 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Boiling Springs fumbled the ball and that led to Thomas Morgan scoring his third touchdown of the game and giving Dorman a 42-7 lead with just over six minutes left in the half. Dorman would get one more score before the half when quarterback Hayden Lee ran the ball in from twelve yards out giving the Cavaliers a 49-7 halftime lead. At the start of the second half the Cavaliers got their only points of the half when Chance Black returned the opening kickoff ninety-seven yards to give Dorman a 56-7 lead. The Bulldogs would add another score with just over a minute to go in the game when Trey Miller ran the ball in from one yard out to make the lead 56-14 in favor of the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers gained four-hundred and two yards of offense on Friday night while the Bulldogs were held to just two-hundred and sixty-two yards. "We had a bad night but I'm proud of the effort the kids showed especially there in the second half," said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. "We told the kids there at halftime that how we played next week will be determined on how we play the second half of this game and I was proud of the effort that the kids brought." With the loss the Bulldogs fell to 1-1 in region play but will look to add another win to that record next week as they host Mauldin for homecoming next Friday. The Mavericks defeated Riverside 49-13 on Friday night. The Boiling Springs volleyball team lost a heartbreaker on Thursday night as the Bulldogs lost 3-2 to Riverside after the Warriors scored the last four points of the match to claim the victory. The Bulldogs came into the game Thursday off of a huge 3-2 victory over Byrnes on Tuesday night. In game one both teams were tied at 24-24 but the Bulldogs claimed the final two points to win 26-24. The Warriors would claim games two and three 25-22 and 25-18 respectively. In game four the Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back as they claimed a 25-15 victory and pushed the match to a game five. The Bulldogs and Warriors battled back and forth in game five as both teams were tied nine different times in the game. After being tied at 12-12, the Bulldogs battled to a 14-12 lead but Riverside battled back to score the last four points of the game giving the Warriors a 16-14 victory in game five. While the Bulldogs fell in a heartbreaker on Thursday night they will get to put that loss behind them as they return to play this weekend at the Hub City Classic Tournament and will return to region play on Tuesday at Dorman. Tennis Victorious Over Dorman The Boiling Springs tennis team improved to 7-2 on Thursday night as they traveled to Dorman and came away with a 7-0 victory over the Cavaliers.
The Bulldogs singles all won again on Thursday repeating a feat they accomplished on Tuesday night as senior Anna Greer (6-0, 6-1) won in number one singles, junior Abigail Bragg (6-0, 6-1) won in number two singles, and seventh grader Ava Bragg (6-0, 6-0) in number three singles. Mallory Cooper (6-3, 6-2) and Sydney Braswell (6-1, 6-2) also walked away with victories for the Bulldogs. The singles matches weren't the only victories for Anna Greer and Abigail Bragg though as the pair also claimed victory over the Cavaliers in number one doubles. The Bulldogs completed the sweep of the match when Madison Ball and Camila Alvarez (6-4, 6-3) won in number two doubles. The Bulldogs tennis team will return to action on Tuesday at Mauldin in a key region matchup. On Tuesday afternoon the Boiling Springs tennis team defeated the Riverside Warriors 6-1 in a key region matchup behind an Impressive performance by their singles. The Bulldogs with the victory improves to 6-2 and keeps its hold on third place in Region II-5A.
Boiling Springs didn't lose a singles match on Tuesday night and the only loss came in number two doubles in a tie breaker. The Bulldogs were led by senior Anna Greer, junior Abigail Bragg, and seventh grader Ava Bragg as they all defeated their opponents 6-0, 6-0. The Bulldogs also got impressive victories from Mallory Cooper (6-1, 6-1) and Sydney Braswell (6-2, 6-0) in number four and five singles. When asked about the performance from her singles on Tuesday night Boiling Springs head tennis coach Jill Cooke said, "I'm just so proud of them, they are all such good girls. We have quite a range of experience especially with those top three as Anna is a senior, Abigail is a junior and Ava is a seventh grader." Coach Cooke said that even with her number two doubles team losing in a tiebreaker she is extremely proud of how they have improved this season. "I'm very proud of the two doubles," said Coach Cooke. "They have really improved other the second half of this season." The Bulldogs tennis team will return to action on Thursday as they travel to Dorman for another important region matchup. Congratulations to Boiling Springs Volleyball’s Maddie Reed on being the Boiling Springs Sports Journal Athlete of the Week. Maddie recently recorded her 1,000th carrer kill. Chesnee Volleyball's Abby Fisher has been selected this week's Boiling Springs Sports Journal Athlete of the Week. Fisher helped the Lady Eagles win two key region road matches this week and has helped the Lady Eagles to a 3-0 start in region play. Fisher had 10 aces, 12 digs, 51 assists, and 2 kills in her team's matches this week.
With Hurricane Florence bearing down on the Carolina coast the Boiling Springs Bulldogs brought a storm of their own to Riverside on Thursday night defeating the Warriors 51-0 to start region play.
The region opener was moved to Thursday because of possible weather that could be hitting the Upstate on Friday but that didn’t effect the Bulldogs as they held the Warriors to forty-seven yards of offense while the Bulldogs offense gained almost four hundred yards. The Bulldogs got started early as the offense drove the ball fifty-four yards, after a Riverside onside kick to start the game, and finished the drive off with a one yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Charles McFadden. On Riverside’s next drive Boiling Springs Dre Pinckney intercepted a Warriors pass giving the Bulldogs possession at their own thirty-one yard line. The Bulldogs followed that interception up with a sixty-nine yard drive that ended with junior quarterback Aaron Thomas throwing a seven yard touchdown pass to senior Davis Brown giving Boiling Springs a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Boiling Springs offense scored four times in the second quarter as Tanner Robbins started and ended the quarters with field goals with the first being from twenty-seven yards out and the second from twenty-eight yards out giving the Bulldogs a 34-0 halftime lead. In between the two Robbins field goals Boiling Springs found the end zone twice as running back Trey Miller scored on a forty-one yard touchdown run and running back Kentavious Epps scored on an eleven yard touchdown run. After a defensive stop by the Bulldogs to start the second half Boiling Springs added to their lead when Caden Peeler returned a Warriors punt fifty-five yards giving the Bulldogs a 41-0 lead. With just over four minutes to go in the third quarter Boiling Springs running back Charles McFadden scored his second touchdown of the game again from one yard out extending the Bulldogs lead to 48-0 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Boiling Springs capped their 51-0 victory off when Chad Stark kicked a nineteen yard field goal giving the Bulldogs their first region win this season. ”We really preached to our kids not to get caught up in it being a Thursday night atmosphere and they came out here with a lot of energy and excitement,” said Bulldogs Head Coach Rick Tate. “I’m glad we got out of here with a win and now the region grind starts next week with Dorman.” The Bulldogs will return to action next Friday as they host region rival Dorman who defeated Hillcrest 28-21 on Thursday night. The Boiling Springs Bulldogs tennis team defeated region opponent Gaffney 6-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs were led on Tuesday by senior Anna Greer who defeated Gaffney's Katelin Mathis (6-0, 6-0).
Greer wasn't the only Bulldogs player to have an impressive victory as Abigail Bragg, the Boiling Springs Sports Journal Athlete of the Week this week, also won without losing a match The Bulldogs will return to action on Thursday at Byrnes. Congratulations to Boiling Springs Abigail Bragg of the Bulldogs tennis team on being named the Athlete of the Week after winning both her matches against Spartanburg and Hillcrest last week. Chesnee's AC Yelton has been named Athlete of the Week after helping lead the Chesnee Volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of the Southside Lady Tigers on Thursday. Yelton had 15 kills, 2 blocks, and a dig in the match against the Lady Tigers.
The number one football team in South Carolina’s 5A division Dutch Fork made a trip to Boiling Springs on Friday night and walked away with a 63-7 victory.
The Silver Foxes offense got their first score of the game just two minutes into the game as quarterback Ty Olenchuk connected on a thirty-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jalin Hyatt to give Dutch Fork a 7-0 lead. The touchdown pass was the first of five for Olenchuk on Friday as he didn’t throw an incomplete pass and threw for three-hundred and forty-one yards. Dutch Fork’s Ron Hoff ran for one-hundred and twenty-one yards on eight carries and two touchdowns. The Silver Foxes held a 49-0 lead over the Bulldogs at halftime. The one shining moment for the Bulldogs on Friday night was when quarterback Aaron Thomas found Davis Brown on a twelve yard touchdown pass to end the Silver Foxes shutout streak. The Bulldogs will return to action Friday night as they travel to Riverside for their first region game of the season. |
