On Wednesday night the Boiling Springs Bulldogs defeated the eighth ranked Westside Rams 60-58 to advance to the second round of the 5A boy's basketball playoffs on a buzzer beating layup by senior Seth Hewitt. The victory gives the Bulldogs its first playoff victory in eleven years..
The Bulldogs started out the game falling behind the Rams 10-3 four minutes into the game only to go on an eleven to two run to end the first quarter and claim a 14-12 lead. Westside's Traye Carson led the Rams in the second quarter as the Rams scored twenty five points in the quarter to reclaim the lead and give Westside a 37-32 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs regained the lead at the start of the third quarter and held on to that lead as they held a 48-47 lead after three quarters. Westside regained the lead with just under 5:50 remaining in the fourth quarter on a three pointer as they took a 52-49 lead. Boiling Springs regained the lead on back-to-back layups late in the fourth quarter giving the Bulldogs a 56-54 lead with just under two minutes left to play in the game. After the Bulldogs pushed the lead to 58-55 Westside was able to tie the game at 58-58 on a Zy Thompson three pointer with just forty seconds left in the game. With just twenty-five seconds left on the clock the Bulldogs brought the ball up the court with a chance to move to the second round of the playoffs on the line. With the clock showing just under ten seconds left in the game junior Kamal Desor drove to the basket and found senior Seth Hewitt wide open under the basket for a layup to give Boiling Springs a 60-58 victory as time expired. Boiling Springs was led on offense by Hewitt who scored sixteen points for the Bulldogs on Wednesday night. Hewitt wasn't the only player for the Bulldogs to score in double figures as junior Zach Baldinelli scored fourteen points and senior Isaiah Prysock finished the game with twelve points. Westside was led on offense by Traye Carson who led all scorers on Friday night with thirty-one points. The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday night at 7:00 PM as they travel to Riverside in the second round of the 5A playoffs after the Warriors defeated Northwestern 66-61 on Wednesday night. With their region schedule already wrapped up, the Boiling Springs Bulldogs finished their regular season against out of region opponent Clover with a 77-53 victory on Senior Night. The Bulldogs jumped out on the Blue Eagles early in the first quarter behind a big quarter from senior Seth Hewitt who had nine points and eight rebounds to give Boiling Springs a 15-8 lead. In the second quarter it was fellow senior Isaiah Prysock who helped lead the Bulldogs as he scored six of his nine first half points in the second quarter. While Boiling Springs was shooting the ball well on Friday night, it was their defense that was stealing the show as they limited Clover to fifteen first half points. The Bulldogs held a 29-15 lead over the Blue Eagles at the half. In the third quarter the Bulldogs stretched their lead out as they outscored Clover 31-10 giving Boiling Springs a 60-25 lead. As the Bulldogs continued to maintain their lead through the fourth quarter the biggest cheer of the night came with just under a minute to go when senior Vasillios Livaditis scored from the post. The Bulldogs finished their regular season with a 77-53 victory. The Bulldogs were led on offense on Senior Night by two seniors as Seth Hewitt finished the night with twenty-three points, thirteen rebounds and two steals while Isaiah Prysock finished the night with seventeen points. The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday night as they travel to Westside in Anderson for the first round of the 5A playoffs. Girls GameThe Lady Bulldogs also finished their season against Clover on Friday night but their late game rally fell short as the lost 47-42.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to tie the game at 36-36 in the fourth quarter but the Lady Blue Eagles were able to outscore Boiling Springs 11-6 down the stretch to grab the victory. The Lady Bulldogs were led on offense by Caroline Reese who scored fourteen points on Friday night. The Lady Bulldogs had already captured the third seed out of Region III-5A before the game even started and will now travel to TL Hanna in the first round of the 5A playoffs. On Wednesday morning the Boiling Springs Bulldogs had two student athletes sign to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level next season.
The first Bulldog to sign on Wednesday was Dylan Brock who signed to continue his football career at Averett University in Danville, Virginia. Brock was a two year starter for the Bulldogs at offensive tackle and was named to the North-South game this past season. “When I went up there to visit, the coaches just made me feel at home and I could tell that it was the place for me,” said Brock. Brock will be majoring in Business. The second Bulldog to sign on Wednesday was another North-South football selection but it was for lacrosse that Graham Derrick committed as he chose to attend Limestone College next season. “I went to a camp there two years ago and they offered me after the camp,” said Derrick. “I had a discussion with my dad about which sport I wanted to play in college and my heart has always been with lacrosse.” With Limestone, Derrick will be joining a team that is a five time National Champion in lacrosse, including being the current defending national champions. Derrick says that he will major in business at Limestone. |
