BOILING SPRINGS, SC- On the first play from scrimmage Boiling Springs running back Carmelo Martin went 80 yards for a touchdown to give the Bulldogs an early lead but despite the fast start they couldn’t overcome a strong rushing attack from Greenwood as the Eagles came away with a 45-21 victory to end the regular season for both teams.
Greenwood came into the game at the #3 ranked team in the latest South Carolina Prep Media poll. "We did some good things out there tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. "They laid the ball on the ground a few times tonight and we didn't take advantage of those chances we were given. It's kind of what has happened to us all season but it's not from a lack of effort from the kids." After the first touchdown by the Bulldogs, Greenwood scored twenty-one unanswered points to end the first quarter as Daylan Rappley started the scoring with a sixteen yard touchdown run on a quarterback keeper over the right side to tie the game at 7-7. Lowndes Still added a twelve yard touchdown run along with a twenty-five yard touchdown run from VE Morton to give the Eagles a 21-7 lead when the horn sounded to end the first quarter. Greenwood made it twenty-eight straight points less than three minutes into the second quarter when Rappley went for his second rushing score of the game on a seven yard touchdown run on fourth down to put the Eagles up 28-7 over the Bulldogs. On the Eagles next possession they fumbled the ball that was recovered by the Bulldogs Zach Watson at the Greenwood forty-seven yard line. The ensuing drive saw Ketrone Adams convert a fourth and thirteen by running down the left side of the field for seventeen yards and a first down. Kam Williams followed with a thirteen yard run up the middle before Adams struck again with a seventeen yard touchdown run up the middle that saw him shred three different Eagles defenders to cut the Greenwood lead to 28-14 over the Bulldogs. Greenwood added a thirty yard field goal at the end of the first half to make their lead 31-14 when the teams went into halftime. Daylan Rappley grabbed his third touchdown of the game when he ran the ball over the right side for twenty-five yards for a touchdown to put the Eagles ahead 38-14 as it was the only score of the third quarter. On the first drive of the fourth quarter Greenwood fumbled the ball which was recovered by the Bulldogs at the Eagles thirty yard line. The Bulldogs took advantage of the turnover when Kam Williams ran the ball in from one yard out to put the Eagles lead at 38-21 over the Bulldogs. Greenwood added another touchdown with five minutes to go in the game when Rappley found Seth Henderson on a twelve yard touchdown to put the Eagles up 45-21. Carmelo Martin led the Bulldogs rushing attack with 127 yards on eleven carries and a touchdown. The Bulldogs defense forced four turnovers on Friday night as Zach Watson recovered two of the fumbles. VE Morton led the rushing attack for Greenwood as he recorded 133 yards on sixteen carries with a touchdown. Friday night also marked the final home game for the 2021 seniors which Tate says he's going to miss because of the relationships they've built. “You get close to those guys because most of them have been here since the ninth grade," said Tate. "This group is no different and I told them my biggest joy is when I run into them fifteen years from now and they have a spouse on side along with kids running around on the other with lots of success. As a coach that's all I can ask for and that's what I want for each of them." Boiling Springs will now head to the first round of the 5A playoffs as they travel a familiar route to Northwestern which Tate says is a great opportunity for his team. ”We played good enough to get into the playoffs this year which only fifteen other teams were able to do this year and we're one of the sixteen that still has a shot," said Tate. "I told our kids number one seeds get beat all the time and if they didn't they wouldn't give any of the other teams a chance to even be in the playoffs. Northwestern is a good team but we're still going to load the bus next Friday and give it a shot." GREENVILLE, SC - In front of a raucous group of fans from both teams on Monday night Boiling Springs and Wade Hampton battled in a back and forth match that saw the Generals come away with a 3-2 victory to advance to the third round of the 5A playoffs. While the Bulldogs ended up on the losing end of the match on Monday night they made the Generals earn the victory. "We didn't step on the court ready to play in the first set but I'm proud of how we got our composure together and battled back," said Bulldogs head coach Allyson Elliot. "I think we really showed what Bulldogs are made of and even though the first set didn't go our way we battled back and moved forward." Boiling Springs fell behind early in the first set trailing 11-3 before the first timeout in the match. The Generals outscored the Bulldogs 14-6 the rest of the set to claim a 25-9 victory in the first set to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The second set saw an almost completely different Bulldogs team show up on the court as the results of the first set quickly faded from their mind. With both teams tied at 3-3, the Bulldogs went on a 5-1 run to extend their lead to 8-4 behind two big blocks from Logan Kenny and an ace serve from Savannah Page. The Generals closed the lead to 17-15 but two back-to-back kills by the Bulldogs Savannah Page pushed the Boiling Springs lead to 19-15. "Savannah is a competitor and keeps her composure and I think the team needed to see her calm after our first set," said Elliot. "After that first set when we could have gotten rattled she kept it together and the team flows how she does and I'm really proud of her leadership." Cloe Wood with a spike kill to the middle of the court and a block by Macy Bagwell finished the set in favor of the Bulldogs as they evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 victory in the second set. Boiling Springs carried their momentum from the second set into the third set as they worked to take a lead in the match. After falling behind 2-1, three straight kills by Cloe Wood gave the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead in the second set. With the Bulldogs leading 11-8 they extended their lead to 14-8 over the Generals after an amazing shot by Charlotte Hutchins landed just inside the Wade Hampton backline along an ace serve from Taylor Crosby and a kill by Cloe Wood. Wade Hampton battled back to take a 27-26 lead in the set but a kill by Savannah Page, a net violation by the Generals, as well as a block off the hands of Charlotte Hutchins and Logan Kenny gave the Bulldogs the final three points of the match to take a 29-27 victory in the third set. With the victory in the third set the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth set saw both teams once again battle as the lead went back and forth but in the end the Generals took a 31-29 victory in the set to tie the match at 2-2. In the fifth set Wade Hampton took their momentum from the fourth set to grab an early 10-4 lead before winning the set 15-7 to win the match. Savannah Page continued her outstanding play this season as she had 30 assists, 12 digs, 10 kills, two blocks and two ace serves while Cloe Wood led the team in kills with 19 kills, 23 digs, and one ace serve. Gracie Kilgore led the team in digs with 36 digs while Sydney Henderson added ten assists. Logan Kenny and Karson Browning led the team in blocks with three blocks each while Kenny added five kills and Browning added eight kills of her own. Taylor Crosby and Morgan Hammett both added two ace serves in the match on Monday. While the match ends the Bulldogs season, it also marks the end of the high school careers of seven seniors (Gracie Kilgore, Amelia Gregg, Savannah Page, Ansley Hammet, Logan Kenny, Taylor Crosby, and Sydney Henderson) that Elliot says has set a foundation for the teams that will come after them. "The seniors set the bar high for this team and I think the younger kids coming up now know what it takes to win at a high level and I believe they'll come back with a hunger for that in the future," said Elliot. "I told the team after the match you don't never think about the speech you're going to give if you lose because you always think there's going to be a next game to play and it hit us hard tonight knowing this was the last game for those seniors. I'm super proud of that group of seniors as these last few years haven't been easy with Covid and everything else but they've stayed united and worked hard. They've been team players and they're going to be missed greatly." Bulldogs Swimmers Named To All-RegionOn Monday the All-Region swimming team was named for Region III-5A and the Bulldogs were well represented.
Ashton Threadgill, Garrett Watson, Miles Humphreys, and Morgan Greenlee were all named to the All-Region team on Monday. Senior swimmer Will Humphreys had double the reasons to celebrate on Monday as he was also named All-Region and All-State. FORT MILL, SC- Boiling Springs got close last week but finally grabbed their first win of the season in a road trip to Fort Mill on Friday night as they defeated the Yellow Jackets 36-22 and also secured their spot in the 5A playoffs in two weeks.
"I'm so happy for the kids and the coaches," said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. "It got ugly at times for us this year as we've felt what's it's like to be on the losing end of these games but now we've got to be on the other end and I'm just so glad the kids got to experience that. We had a chance to get that first win last week and to see the kids bounce back and get that win tonight is special." The Bulldogs were aided in the game by a big night from junior running back Kam Williams who ran the ball for 246 yards on twenty-three carries with three touchdowns. "Kam struggled there some in the midseason and I'm so happy he was able to come back tonight and have a great game," said Tate. "He's a tough player with great vision and I believe with another year in the weight room I could see him being one of the better backs in the upstate of South Carolina next year." Boiling Springs started the game with their defense forced a punt on Fort Mill's opening drive that then allowed the Bulldogs offense to get to work. The Bulldogs offense used a steady dose of Williams and fellow junior running back Carmelo Martin on their opening drive to go sixty-eight yards down the field before Martin found the endzone on a five yard carry over the left side to go up 6-0. On the point after attempt a low snap forced holder Luke Compton to run around the right side where he found the endzone to go up 8-0 over Fort Mill with just over five minutes left in the first half. After a Boiling Springs turnover on their next possession, Fort Mill was able to grab their first points of the game when kicker Joe Schepler hit a 43 yard field goal from the right side to get the Bulldogs lead to 8-3 with just over eleven minutes to go in the first half. On the next Bulldogs drive, Martin returned the kickoff to the forty yard line and followed that up with a thirteen yard run. Quarterback Ketrone Adams found Brent Fowler for an eighteen yard pass before a Fort Mill penalty that then set up Kam Williams for an eight yard touchdown run over the left side to put the Bulldogs up 15-3 with just over ten minutes to go in the half. Fort Mill tried to get a drive put together on their next possession but that was ended when Bulldogs cornerback Keondre Keenon intercepted a Yellow Jackets pass in the endzone to give the ball back to Boiling Springs. After another defensive hold by the Bulldogs on a fourth and one for the Yellow Jackets, Boiling Springs took possession of the ball with under two minutes to go in the half at their own forty-four yard line. The Bulldogs used that time wisely moving methodically downfield before Carmelo Martin found the endzone on a three yard run over the left side to take a 22-3 lead into halftime. Fort Mill added the first score of the second half when running back Michael Threatt outran the Bulldogs defense to the left side of the endzone for a ten yard score to put the Bulldogs lead at 22-9 after the Bulldogs blocked the point after attempt. The Bulldogs answered the Yellow Jackets score with a seventy-five yard scoring drive of their own that was capped off by a seven yard touchdown run from Kam Williams to give the Bulldogs a 29-9 lead with five minutes left in the third quarter. Just before the third quarter ended the Yellow Jackets on fourth down were able to get a score when quarterback Isaiah Haynes found wide receiver JJ Ogwai in the left back corner of the endzone to cut the Bulldogs lead to 29-15 heading into the final quarter. After back-to-back turnovers by the Bulldogs offense, Fort Mill's offense put a drive together that saw them get into the Boiling Springs redzone before Bulldogs defender Joston Miller intercepted a Yellow Jackets pass at the one yard line to end their drive. "Joston made probably the biggest play of the game because if they score right there the game becomes a one score game," said Tate. "If he doesn't make that play the game starts to be in doubt and he's been close to making plays like that all season and I'm glad for him that he made one. Being a defensive lineman short tonight we challenged him before the game to have a big game for the team and he did just that tonight." The Bulldogs followed up the turnover with another scoring drive when Kam Williams broke through the middle of the Fort Mill defense for a sixty-six yard touchdown run to take a 36-15 lead with less than two minutes to go. Fort Mill added another score with fifteen seconds to go in the game when quarterback Isaiah Haynes scrambled for a seven yard touchdown run to put the score at 36-22 in favor of the Bulldogs. Boiling Springs had a great night of offense as they went for 432 yards of offense with 356 of that coming on the ground. While Williams had a great night running the ball Carmelo Martin also had a strong night adding 85 yards on thirteen carries with two touchdowns. Brent Fowler led the Bulldogs in receiving with 73 yards on five receptions. While the Bulldogs had a great night on offense the defense also had a big night as Zach Watson led the Bulldogs with seven and a half tackles while Keondre Keenon and Joston Miller both came away with interceptions. Before the final sixty yard drive of the night the Bulldogs defense had held the Yellow Jackets offense to only 179 yards of total offense. "We got a good effort from our defense all night tonight," said Tate. "I told Zach after the game that I believe when we watch film of the game we'll see him making plays all over the field. They had a hard time running to his side all night." Boiling Springs will return to action next Friday when they host Greenwood for senior night to end the regular season. "We now assure ourselves of being in the playoffs which is just a one week at a time season," said Tate. "That's the reason they have the playoffs and what else could you ask for than a chance to go against a number one seed with the opportunity to prove yourself." The Boiling Springs volleyball team opened the 5A playoffs as a number four seed which forced them to travel to Blythewood on Wednesday but when the night was over the Bulldogs came away with a 3-1 victory over the number one seed Bengals.
In the same time that it took the Bulldogs to reach their first round playoff match, they also sealed their trip to the second round of the playoffs in the same amount of time. ”We like being the underdog and we know they have a great program,” said Bulldogs head coach Allyson Elliot. “We had a great atmosphere tonight and it all just fell together for us tonight. It was a back and forth game all night and I was proud how we responded especially in game four after losing the third set and put it away. Our girls are used to these long road trips and to get a big win on a road trip like this is huge for us. This win will give us huge momentum moving forward in the playoffs.” The Bulldogs set the tone early coming away with a 25-21 victory in the first set before grabbing a 25-22 victory in the second set to take a quick 2-0 lead in the match. Blythewood made a run in the third set grabbing a 25-16 win to cut the Bulldogs lead to 2-1 but that was their only win of the match as the Bulldogs claimed their most dominant victory of the match during the fourth set coming away with a 25-19 victory to win the set and match moving the Bulldogs into the second round of the playoffs. Savannah Page led the Bulldogs on Wednesday night with two kills, three aces, three blocks, 19 assists, and 14 digs as Gracie Kilgore led the team in digs with 25 while adding four ace serves and four assists. The Bulldogs also had a strong presence on the net as Cloe Wood led the team in kills with 15 kills, 12 digs, two blocks, and two ace serves while Karson Browning also added 12 kills and four blocks. With the victory the Bulldogs will now travel to Wade Hampton on Monday for a second round matchup in the 5A playoffs. “We played them earlier this year and I know they have only gotten better which I feel like we have done the same thing,” said Elliot. “We’re looking forward to the matchup and know it will be a good match.” CHESTER, SC- On Monday morning the Boiling Springs girls golf team teed off at the Chester Country Club for the second week in a row and after punching their ticket to the Upper State tournament last week, they secured their spot in the 5A state championship tournament by shooting their best team score of the season.
"I am so proud of the team," said Bulldogs head coach Macy Tate. "They played awesome today and did exactly what they needed to do to qualify for the state championship tournament. I feel like we're playing our best golf at the right time of the year and can't wait to play one more time as a team next week." Boiling Springs for the first time this season, in an eighteen hole tournament, had each of their players shoot a score under 100 as they shot a team score of 341 to finish in a tie for seventh place, which was ten shots better than their score at the same course last week. The top eight teams from both the Upper State and Lower State championship tournaments qualify for the state championship tournament. The Bulldogs tied for seventh with Mauldin and one just one shot behind sixth place Spartanburg and six shots behind their region champions Gaffney. Blythewood won the tournament with a score of 281, which was twenty-two shots ahead of second place Dorman (303) and third place Byrnes (320), after having three golfers shoot a score under par on Monday. Boiling Springs was led by junior golfer Madison Dixon who finished the tournament in third place after shooting a score of 70, which put her just one shot back of tying for first place with Blythewood players Paige Paolucci and Caroline Hawkins who both shot scores of 69 to tie for first place. Dixon along with teammates Sarah Wentz, Sophia Leso, Bella Greene, and Ryanna Douglas continue the Bulldogs long streak of qualifying for the state championship tournament that has lasted for more than seven years. Boiling Springs will next return to the course when they travel to the South Carolina 5A state championship next Monday and Tuesday at the Country Club of South Carolina located in Florence, SC. BOILING SPRINGS - With Boiling Springs looking to have their first halftime lead of the season, a group of mistakes led to the Bulldogs being down ten heading to halftime as Clover defeated the Bulldogs 17-7 on Friday night.
While the Bulldogs missed out on some key opportunities to possibly grab their first win of the season, it didn't overshadow the strong effort put together by the team including a big second half that saw the defense hold Clover scoreless. "Tonight was about missed opportunities and that's all you can really say," said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. "We got to make plays and as coaches we got to put the kids in better opportunities to make plays. The effort from the kids was there and I think our defense played the best four quarters that they've played all season against a team that has put up a lot of points this year." The first drive of the game saw Clover recover a Boiling Springs fumble at the Bulldogs twelve yard line less than two minutes into the first quarter. Three plays later Clover running back DeMarco Evans ran the ball in from one yard out to give the Blue Eagles an early 7-0 lead. On the next drive the Bulldogs offense looked a lot better starting on second down at their own fifteen yard line when Boiling Springs quarterback Ketrone Adams found wide receiver Charkei Singleton across the middle for a seventy-nine yard gain to the Clover six yard line. Adams ran the ball in three plays later on a quarterback keeper over the right side for a three yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7 with just over seven minutes to go in the first quarter. With just over five minutes to go in the first half Clover retook the lead when kicker Neal Farris hit a thirty-two yard field goal to go up 10-7 over the Bulldogs. The game took it's biggest swing of the night with less than two minutes to go in the game as the Bulldogs were able to drive the ball down to the Clover one yard line before a Boiling Springs fumble was recovered by Clover with under two minutes to go in the first half. Clover took advantage of the turnover three plays later when quarterback Joe Boyd found wide receiver Dion Brown down the right side of the field, who had broke behind the Boiling Springs defense, for a seventy-six yard touchdown to put the Blue Eagles up 17-7 going into halftime. With that score it accounted for all the scoring in the game for both teams. In the first half the Blue Eagles accounted for one-hundred eighty yards of offense but in the second half the Bulldogs limited Clover to just eight yards of offense. The strong effort by the Bulldogs defense was led by cornerback Kairon Hines who had two interceptions along with safety Luke Compton who led the team with seven tackles. They also got a strong second half from sophomore cornerback Josiah Ward who had multiple pass breakups for the Bulldogs. "I told our guys at halftime we had some guys out there making plays and Kairon was one of those guys," said Tate. "He hit the field making plays as well as Charkei Singleton. I also thought we got a good game from our sophomore Josiah Ward who played big there in the second half." Boiling Springs will head into next week with their playoff chances on the line when they travel to Fort Mill for the final region matchup of the season. "Going into the game you try to find every measuring stick you can to find out how you match up with people and Fort Mill next week is no different," said Tate. "Fort Mill is a hard playing team and will bring everything they got into that game because they know it The Boiling Springs volleyball team had a busy twenty-four hours as they celebrated senior night on Tuesday before capping off the two days of volleyball with a 3-0 victory over Byrnes on the Bulldogs annual Pink Night.
"There has been a lot of volleyball in the last twenty-four hours," said Bulldogs head coach Allyson Elliot. "We lost last night in a very intense volleyball match against Fort Mill but our girls showed up again tonight as we knew tonight was going to be another tough matchup and it was good to get the win." The Bulldogs won on Wednesday night by winning three straight sets over the Rebels (25-21, 25-20, 25-19) to end the 2021 regular season with a victory. The victory on the Pink Night is special because it's became an annual event that the Bulldogs have been doing for the last twelve years, after a player had lost their mother to breast cancer, and an event that has really become a big part of the community. "It has been really exciting this week because our Pink Night happened on the same week as homecoming week," said Elliot. "Today at school it was also pink day for homecoming and our student council sold goodies at lunch which raised over $400 just in that time period. The kids bought t-shirts as well and all that money is going to the American Cancer Society. Our parents, kids, and the community have really pitched in and we're just excited to get to do something positive in the community. It started with just pink t-shirts to now being pink everything including the net tonight." In the match senior Savannah Page had six kills, one block, twenty-four assists, eight digs, and one ace serve while fellow senior Gracie Kilgore added twenty-four digs, two assists and one ace serve. Cloe Wood added ten kills, eleven digs, and two blocks while Karson Browning pitched in another ten kills and two blocks. The Pink Night game was the second of two matches in two days for the Bulldogs as they also held Senior night on Tuesday, where they fell to Fort Mill 3-1 in a very competitive match. Before the match against Fort Mill the Bulldogs honored seven seniors as they thanked Gracie Kilgore, Amelia Gregg, Savannah Page, Ansley Hammett, Logan Kenny, Taylor Crosby, and Sydney Henderson for their time in the Boiling Springs program. Between the seven seniors they account for almost twenty years of time spent on the Bulldogs varsity roster. "This group of seniors is a great group," said Elliot. "This group brings a great chemistry as they all want to play but more than that they want the team to be successful. It's exciting to see them all improve their own roles but even more exciting to see them cheer each other on during the season. That's just great leadership and it comes from having seven great leaders. I'm really proud of how these seniors have built such a great atmosphere for all the players to be a part of this year." The Bulldogs will now turn their focus to the 5A playoffs where they currently sit, with a few games in region by other teams still left to play, as the fourth seed. If all things stay the same the Bulldogs will be traveling to face the number one seed from Region IV-5A on Wednesday. Elliot feels that her team will be a tough matchup for teams in the playoffs and aren't your normal number four seed team that you see in the playoffs. "I feel like our team has all the tools to go far in the playoffs," said Elliot. "At this point it's anyone's game and we don't have to beat everyone, we just have to find ways to get to the next match. I think we're one of those teams that will surprise other teams as the four seed and it's going to be some good volleyball because our girls hate to lose and will bring their best game each night." When the final tennis ball came to rest on Wednesday evening the Boiling Springs tennis team had captured a 4-2 victory over Clover but most importantly had clinched the second seed from Region III-5A as well as a first round home playoff match.
The Bulldogs defeated Clover in a five set match because both teams had missed a match against each other earlier this season. "Our team came out and performed tonight knowing what was on the line," said Bulldogs head coach Jill Cooke. "Tonight they knew this could be two wins as we played five set matches to make up for a missed match earlier this season. Our kids have been resilient all season as they've overcome a bunch of different factors this season that weren't necessarily on our side but they battled through it all." Madison Ball led the way for the Bulldogs as she defeated Clover's Finley Wine (6-0, 6-1, 6-1) in number one singles to get the Bulldogs off to a 1-0 start in the match. Ball said that being able to reach the playoffs in her senior year and to host a playoff match is a special accomplishment. "It feels great to accomplish this my senior year," said Ball. "It's been a long time since we hosted a playoff match and do it my senior year is great because we've worked our butts off. When we first started doing all this work we couldn't understand why at first but to now see the hard work paying off is pretty cool. We've won a lot this year including the Eye Opener and now finishing second in the region has been great to do in my senior year." Sydney Braswell defeated Natalia Redshaw (6-1, 6-2, 6-2) in number two singles to give the Bulldogs their second victory in the match. In number three singles Emily Krechko grabbed a victory over Zoe Muiruri (6-0, 7-5, 6-2) as she battled back from down 3-0 in the second set to come back and grab the 7-5 set victory. The wins in the first three matches came from three of the four seniors and from a group that Cooke says has been instrumental to the success of the team this season. "This group of seniors have been tremendous as they've led this team both on and off the court," said Cooke. "They lead by example and always cheering the other players on, they really are a special group of girls." Boiling Springs sealed the victory in number two doubles as Victoria Leonard and Anna Lynn Faile defeated Addison Haas and Alaina Rinkes (6-1, 6-1, 6-2) to secure the Bulldogs their playoff spot. Cooke, who played under legendary Bulldogs tennis coach Randy Gregory, said that being able to help guide this team back to hosting a playoff game is special for many reasons. "It means a lot to me to get this program back to hosting a playoff game because to me these will always be Coach G courts," said Cooke. "He definitely set the bar high for the tennis program and he would absolutely be smiling about what these girls accomplished this season. They've raised the bar themselves and have worked hard to get to this point." Cooke also added that the leadership from senior captain Madison Ball has helped lead this team to where they are hosting a playoff match for the first time in years. "My favorite quote to her is: you'll always be my favorite number one," said Cooke. "She has so much potential and will do so many great things. As the captain she makes sure everyone stretches and that everyone is hitting right while not being afraid to tell them when they're not. She's like having another coach on the court and I will truly miss not having her here next year." The Bulldogs will open the 2021 5A tennis playoffs on Thursday (October 21st) against the number three seed from Region IV-5A, which at this time is still yet to be determined. Over two days at the North Charleston Aquatic Center, the Boiling Springs swim team competed in the 5A state championships coming away with some good finishes including one of the best finishes by the boy's team ever at a state championship meet.
The Boiling Springs girls team started the championships on Saturday where Morgan Greenlee came away with a twenty-second place finish in the 200y individual medley and twenty-fifth in the 100y butterfly. Laney Moore came away with a twenty-seventh place finish in the 500y freestyle while the 400y relay team came away with a strong sixteenth place finish. "Our girls team had a great night on Saturday," said Peden. "They weren't seeded quite as high as the guys but came away with personal records in most of the events and the relay team done really really well." On Monday afternoon the Bulldogs boys team got their chance in the pool and came away with one of the top finishes in school history coming away with a ninth place finish out of twenty-eight teams competing. The team also outcompeted many of their region and local foes finishing ahead of team's like Nation Ford, Clover, and Dorman while also finishing just four spots behind region rival Fort Mill. "I'm so pumped with how well we done," said Bulldogs head coach Lanie Peden. "We had a great meet and came away with a strong ninth place finish which tied us with Byrnes but put us ahead of some of the normal teams we compete against. I was super proud of our kids." The boys 200y medley relay team (Will Humphreys, Garrett Watson, Ashton Threadgill, and Miles Humphreys) came away with a sixth place finish while the 400y freestyle relay team came away with an eighth place finish. Will Humphreys had an impressive state meet as he finished fourth in the 200y freestyle and third in the 500y freestyle. Humphreys also broke his own 100y freestyle record in the lead leg of the 400y freestyle relay. Ashton Threadgill had a strong outing as well coming away with a fourteenth place finish in the 200y individual medley while also breaking a school record, which was held by Grant Wilson, with his ninth place finish in the 100y breaststroke. Garrett Watson added a seventeenth and eighteenth place finish in both the 200y freestyle and the 500y freestyle. Miles Humphreys added a twenty-third place finish in the 100y breaststroke on Monday afternoon. "With the way the meet was setup a couple of our swimmers had to swim in back-to-back events so to finish as well as they done was impressive," said Peden. "All of our guys done great and for the most part each of them came away with personal records. They have a lot to be proud of after such a strong meet." Boiling Springs will look to build on their success this season going into next year as they return all but two swimmers from this year's team. "I look forward to continuing to grow our team," said Peden. "I'm super pumped with how well we done at the meet tonight and look forward to building on that success." The Boiling Springs tennis team continued their winning ways on Monday as they defeated Nation Ford 5-1 in a key region matchup that started a busy week for the Bulldogs.
"Tonight the girls were on their game from the get-go," said Bulldogs head coach Jill Cooke. "I told them that Nation Ford would be coming here looking to revenge their loss last week and to not take anything for granted. They played tough from the start and just done a great job." The Bulldogs started the night picking up a win in number one singles as Madison Ball defeated her opponent (6-2, 6-2) before Sydney Braswell defeated Lauren Padgett (6-1, 6-0) in number two singles. Emily Krechko defeated Bella Neff (6-1, 6-2) in number three singles before Kaiden Price defeated Ava Baldino (6-2, 6-1) in number four singles. Boiling Springs also picked up a victory in number two doubles as Victoria Leonard and Anna Lynn Faile defeated their opponents (6-3, 6-2). The victory starts a busy week for the Bulldogs as they will play three straight matches in three consecutive days and Cooke said starting out this week with a win is very important. "It's very good to start with a win because it sets the pace for the week," said Cooke. "We'll follow it up with a big match against Fort Mill tomorrow before finishing out our region play with a huge match against Clover, so to get this first one is a good step towards the rest of the week." The Bulldogs improved their record to 13-1 on the season and 5-1 in region play which is a huge improvement from last year which Cooke credits to her senior leaders. "Our team has played leaps and bounds better this year and I think it's definitely because of the senior leadership and their experience," said Cooke. "They've led the team with their experience and it's the reason we've only loss one match, it's because of their expertise." Boiling Springs will end the regular season with two straight home region matches against Fort Mill on Tuesday, the Bulldogs only loss this season, and against Clover on Wednesday. The final two matches will be important to the positioning of the Bulldogs in the playoffs and they'll be looking for a lot of community support especially on Wednesday afternoon. |
