They say at your lowest moment you will find your strength and at the five minute mark in the third quarter the Boiling Springs Bulldogs did just that as they rallied from nine points down to capture a 66-56 victory over the Spartanburg Vikings. At the five minute mark the Bulldogs were trailing 34-27 when the bench was called for a technical foul and Uziah Dawkins sank two free throws to put Spartanburg up 36-27. The run started at that moment as the Bulldogs outscored the Vikings 14-9 over the last five minutes of the quarter to put the Bulldogs within two heading into the fourth quarter at 43-41. "Most of the time something like that doesn't help you but I think it really put a chip on our kids shoulder and they dug in and got tough," said Bulldogs head coach Hal McManus. "I'm really proud of our kids toughness tonight." It was all Boiling Springs in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs outscored Spartanburg 25-13 down the stretch. The Bulldogs fourth quarter run got started when JB Kennedy hit back to back three pointers to give Boiling Springs its first lead since the first quarter. "I really like the confidence he showed taking those shots," said Coach McManus. "That was a huge deal helping push us there on that fourth quarter run." Kennedy ended the game with fourteen points, with twelve of those points coming from behind the three point line. The Bulldogs also got a big fourth quarter from Seth Hewitt who scored twelve of his game high nineteen points in the fourth quarter, while going eight for nine from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. "You know it's great having a big man that will fight for rebounds but also is able to hit some clutch free throws down the stretch," said Coach McManus. With the victory the Bulldogs improve to 2-3 in region play and will return to action on Tuesday night as they host Dorman. Girls GameThe Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs used a huge defensive second half to capture a 39-31 victory over the Spartanburg Vikings.
The Bulldogs got the first lead of the game at 2-0 but soon trailed 9-2 after Spartanburg went on a 9-0 run midway through the first quarter. The Bulldogs were able to score four before the end of the quarter to put the score at 9-6. The Bulldogs would get closer in the second quarter but still trailed at halftime 16-14. "We came out flat but we figured out we could up the defensive tempo and take advantage of that and that's exactly what we done," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. The Bulldogs outscored the Vikings 25-15 in the second half and that run was led by the multiple turnovers that Boiling Springs forced in the half. The Bulldogs were led offensively by junior Caroline Reese who had fifteen points during the Boiling Springs run after being held scoreless in the first quarter. "She was frustrated there early in the game but she came on in the second half and done what leaders do." said Coach Lytle. "She helped lead our defensive tempo and it allowed her to get her shots." The Bulldogs also got seven points from sophomore Arissa Edwards and six points from junior Julia Leso. The Vikings were led offensively by Lyndsay Days who scored eight points for Spartanburg on Friday night. With the victory the Lady Bulldogs improve their region record to 3-2 and they will return to action on Tuesday night as they host the Dorman Cavaliers. On Friday night with a chance to even their region record at 2-2, the Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs took care of business as they grabbed a 41-39 victory over the visiting Byrnes Lady Rebels. The Bulldogs grabbed an early lead from the Rebels and never relinquished that lead, giving Boiling Springs it's first victory over the Lady Rebels in years. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter behind five points from sophomore Arissa Edwards and was able to maintain a 23-17 lead at halftime after freshman Laisha Labra gave the Lady Bulldogs six points in the second quarter. Byrnes wa able to make a run at the Boiling Springs lead in the third quarter as they outscored the Lady Bulldogs 14-10 to get within two points of the lead at the end of the third quarter with the Lady Bulldogs still leading 33-31. Both teams worked to capture the lead in the fourth quarter but it was the Lady Bulldogs who walked away with the victory as they were able to maintain their two point advantage and claim a 41-39 victory. "I can't remember the last time that Boiling Springs beat Byrnes in girl's basketball," said Boiling Springs head coach Dwayne Lytle. "I'm just so proud of my girls and the effort they gave out here tonight." The Lady Bulldogs were led on offense by sophomore Arissa Edwards, junior Amaya Richardson, junior Caroline Reese, and junior Julia Leso as they all scored eight points for the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Rebels were led on offense by senior Desirae Donald who scored twelve points on Friday night. The Lady Bulldogs will return to action on Monday in non-region action at Clover. Boy's Game The Boiling Springs Bulldogs were able to overcome a sixteen point first quarter deficit to tie the game at 50-50 at the end of the third quarter but couldn't finish the comeback as they fell to the Byrnes Rebels 67-61 on Friday night.
The Rebels grabbed a 30-14 lead at the end of the first quarter with the help of junior Josh Moore who scored nine first quarter points. The Bulldogs started their comeback run in the second though as they outscored the Rebels 16-9 to make the score 39-30 at halftime. The Bulldogs finally were able to tie the game at 50-50 with thirty-four seconds left in the third quarter when junior Zach Baldinelli hit a three pointer to tie the game. Baldinelli helped lead the comeback over the second and third quarters as he scored eighteen of his twenty-two points in those two quarters. The Rebels were able to recapture the lead in the fourth quarter behind clutch free throw shooting from the line by junior Deandre Cornish and by senior Davonte Wright. Boiling Springs was led in scoring by Baldinelli who scored twenty-two ponts on Friday night. The Bulldogs also got good games from juniors Kamal Desor who scored fourteen points and Chance Guest who scored ten points. Byrnes was led on Friday night by Josh Moore who scored thirteen points on Friday night. The Bulldogs will return to action on Monday night as they travel to Clover in non-region action. The Boiling Springs Bulldogs opened up region play on Tuesday night in the best way possible as they grabbed a 57-55 victory over the visiting Spartanburg Vikings. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the game but didn't hold the lead again until 3:50 was left in the third quarter. While it was the first game in region play it could have been easily mistaken for a playoff game as both teams brought an energy to the game that was only intensified by the loud crowds on both sides. The Bulldogs after grabbing the first lead of the game was outscored 14-8 over the rest of the quarter as Spartanburg grabbed a 14-10 first quarter lead with help from senior Uzziah Dawkins who had five points in the quarter. The game reached halftime with Spartanburg leading 29-24 behind a huge second quarter from junior Sean Jenkins. Jenkins led the Vikings in scoring in the first half with eleven of his fifteen first half points coming in the second quarter. The Bulldogs were able to claw their way back in the third quarter though behind six points from senior Seth Hewitt, with his layup being the points that gave Boiling Springs its first lead since the start of the game at 34-33 with 3:50 left in the third quarter. While the Vikings were able to reclaim the lead on the next possession it was a three pointer by junior Zach Baldinelli that gave the Bulldogs the lead 38-36 with 1:00 left in the third quarter. The Bulldogs claimed a 40-36 lead at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter it became a battle between both teams from the free throw lines and it was the Bulldogs who were able to escape with a 57-55 victory when Trayson Fowler grabbed a rebound on a missed free throw by Baldinelli with 1.6 seconds left in the game to secure the Boiling Springs victory. The Bulldogs were led on offense by junior Zach Baldinelli who scored fifteen points and grabbed six rebounds. Boiling Springs also got good games from senior Seth Hewitt who had ten points and six rebounds and also from Pierre Gentry who had eleven points. On a night the Bulldogs struggled from the free throw line, Gentry was the exception as he went nine of eleven from the free throw line. Spartanburg was led on offense by junior Sean Jenkins who scored twenty-four points for the Vikings. They also got a good night from senior Uzziah Dawkins who finished the night with thirteen points. The Bulldogs will travel to Dorman on Friday night. Lady Vikings Defeat Lady Bulldogs In the girl's game it was almost the exact opposite of the boys game as it was the Lady Bulldogs who led most of the first half only to fall to the Lady Vikings 42-34. The Bulldogs held a halftime lead of 16-15 over Spartanburg but were unable to hold on to that lead in the second half as Spartanburg had a 28-24 lead after the third quarter.
The Lady Vikings took the lead at 22-21 with 4:45 left in the third quarter and never looked back. The Lady Bulldogs were able to get the Vikings lead back down to five late in the fourth quarter but it was clutch free throw shooting from the Lady Vikings that helped Spartanburg capture the 42-34 victory. The Lady Bulldogs were led on offense by Caroline Reese who scored fourteen points. Amaya Richardson also added thirteen points for the Lady Bulldogs. In a matchup between two teams located within ten miles of each other it was the Boiling Springs Bulldogs who walked away with a 74-60 win over the Chapman Panthers.
In Boiling Springs first matchup since the Christmas break and first game since winning the Shootout By the Sea the Bulldogs didn’t miss a beat as they jumped out to a 25-16 lead. The Panthers made a comeback in the second quarter though as they closed the Bulldogs lead to 48-43 at halftime. It was all Bulldogs in the second half though as they outscored the Panthers 26-17 over the last sixteen minutes and grabbed a 74-60 victory. Boiling Springs was led on offense by junior Chance Guest who scored seventeen points, fifteen in the first half, with four rebounds and one steal. Junior Kamal Desor also had a good game for the Bulldogs as he scored ten points with four rebounds and three steals. Banks Atkins led the Panthers with fourteen points. The win by the Boiling Springs boys was the ending of the sweep for the night as the Lady Bulldogs also defeated the Lady Panthers 58-45. Caroline Reese led the Lady Bulldogs with eighteen points. |
