Behind a 5-for-5 night from Becca Watson, the Chesnee Lady Eagles downed the Blacksburg Lady Wildcats 11-5 to win 2nd place in region and earn the right to host a home playoff game. According to the SCHSL, the softball playoffs will begin Thursday, April 26. The Lady Eagles will host the #3 seed out of Region II.
The Chesnee Lady Eagles are one of the youngest teams in the area as they at times field a lineup that features 8 9th graders or younger, and that youth came through in a big way. 6 out of the 11 RBIs for the Lady Eagles came from 9th graders or younger, and 10 out of the 11 RBIs came from 10th graders or younger. Earning the #2 seed in region is quite an accomplishment for the young Lady Eagles, and Head Coach Ashley Height is proud of all that her team has accomplished so far this season, "I have said from the very beginning of the year that with us being so young it would be huge for us to be able to host, and I'm excited for these girls, they have worked hard. We have kinda been a little bit of an underdog and they have always fought. We have done things well and done things we need to improve on, but overall these girls are fighters and I'm looking forward to the playoffs." Coach Height said. One freshman in particular had a great night, Becca Watson went 5-5 with a double and two RBIs and she scored two runs. Coach Height was looking for a spark in the lineup and her young first baseman provided, "we have talked about as we move into playoffs about how important it is that all of our bats get going. We needed someone to start it and to have someone like Becca who is high energy and someone like her starting something is huge for the other girls and gets them motivated too." Coach Height said. Shelby Harris and Hannah Henderson both had three RBIs for the Lady Eagles. Harris hit a 3 run inside the park home run and Henderson drove a run a hit by pitch and she hit a two RBI single. Ali Scruggs had two RBIs, she drew a bases loaded walk and hit a sacrifice ground ball to drive in her runs. Madison McSwain and Olivia Gardner each had RBIs for Lady Eagles. Comments are closed.
