Chesnee knew going into Monday night that they had two opportunities to win the District Championship if they needed to. Austin Brown did his job on the mound and the Chesnee bats made sure they only needed one game.
Brown pitched 5 1/3 innings, scattering 5 hits and allowing 1 run while striking out 4. The Chesnee defense was solid behind Brown as Luke Cash and Colin Turner both made several nice plays, and Nolan Hammett made some nice picks at first base. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease was pleased with his Junior right hander's performance, "Austin did an excellent job. He threw two pitches well, fastball and changeup, and spotted the fastball. He made them put it in play, and that is all we can ask for, and we made the plays defensively. " The Chesnee bats came alive early as the scored in each of the first three innings. In the 1st inning, Dawson Williamson hit a infield single and Kobe Miller was able to score from 1st with the help of some Gray Collegiate errors. In the 2nd, Blake Scruggs hit a leadoff single and eventually came around to score on a balk call. In the 3rd, Dawson Williamson hit a lead off single and stole 2nd base. Nate Lamb hit a shallow fly ball that was misplayed by the Gray Collegiate fielder in fair territory and rolled out of play to score Williamson. Colin Turner drove in Lamb with a RBI single. In the 5th, Blake Scruggs hit an RBI double to score Nolan Hammett, but the Eagles stranded Colin Turner, Matthew Wood, and Kip Bagwell to leave the bases loaded. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease was pleased with how his team was able to take advantage of Gray Collegiate mistakes and create opportunities of their own, "our guys can run a little bit and we are blessed with some team speed, that causes teams to have to hurry and get rid of it and that causes errant throws. The ball hit to the shortstop was a big league pop-up by Nate, and when it hit his glove it took off out of play and we got another run because of it." Bo Walker came on to pitch in the 6th and was able to help the Eagles seal the district championship. The 2A upper state bracket is set as Ninety-Six will travel to Chesnee on Thursday and Cheraw will travel to Blacksburg. Chesnee Head Coach Scott Wease is pleased his team has completed two of it's goals to start the season, "it is definitely big that we won game one and didn't have to play two, that is always a positive. That was our mindset coming in, we told them before the game to take care of it in the first game and enjoy it, and tomorrow we will come back and prepare for the first game of upper state.
