The Chesnee baseball team downed Woodruff 14-6 in a season opening matchup of county rivals that turned into a three hour marathon.
"It's great to start off in the win column,” said Chesnee head coach Scott Wease. “I'm proud of the guys. It wasn't the prettiest of wins but a win is a win." Chesnee struck first in the top of the first inning as Michael Paslawski drew a leadoff walk and stole second before later scoring on Landon Thompson's deep RBI double to put Chesnee up 1-0. The Wolverines bounced back to load the bases in the bottom of the first but Chesnee pitcher Cole Davis induced a ground ball to start a 6-4-3 double play to escape the jam. The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the top of the second inning as the Woodruff outfield misplayed a Landon Thompson fly ball to score both Carson Williamson and Michael Paslawski. Woodruff cut into the lead with a one out RBI from Nehemiah Cochran to make the Eagles lead 3-1. Paslawski walked for the third consecutive plate appearance in the top of the fourth and later scored his third consecutive run on a wild pitch to push the Eagles lead to 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Chesnee added four more runs in the top of the fifth as Jonah Epps got the inning started with a double and later stole third base. Davis Rising followed Epps with a walk before adding a stolen base of his own swiping second base. The nifty base running allowed the Eagles to plate a run on a Cam Burns sacrifice and Carson Williamson followed with a sharp two RBI single to make the score 7-0 in favor of the Eagles. Williamson later scored on a Landon Thompson RBI sacrifice fly of his own to push the lead to 8-0. Woodruff answered back with four runs of their own as Zach Aylor, Colin Watson, and Stetson Schubach each picked up a RBI while Woodruff plated another run on a Chesnee error. The Eagles drew three consecutive walks sandwiched between two strikeouts to open the top of the sixth inning. Carson Williamson drove in the first run of the inning with a RBI single which was followed by Michael Paslawski and Bryson Scruggs each picking up a two RBI single while Chesnee added another run on a fielding error by the Wolverines. Nehemiah Cochran added another RBI for the Wolverines in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 14-6 in favor of Chesnee and that did it for the scoring on Monday night. Michael Paslawski had a big night at the plate for the Eagles as he reached base in all five plate appearances scoring four runs, stealing four bases and adding four RBIs. Chesnee will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Greer with a 6:30 PM scheduled first pitch. Comments are closed.
