The Chesnee baseball team used a strong offensive performance to defeat Blacksburg 14-4 to open up region play on Friday night.
"We will definitely enjoy this one tonight,” said Chesnee head coach Scott Wease. “While we’ll enjoy this win tonight we’re also gonna have to get back to work and prepare for another game with a very good Blacksburg team on Monday night at their place." Blacksburg plated the game's first run in the top of the first inning after Zac Painter worked a walk and used some smart base running to score on a Will Johnson sacrifice. Chesnee responded by plating three in the bottom half of the first inning which started with Michael Paslawski beating out a bunt down the third base line. After back-to-back hit by pitches to load the bases the Eagles got back-to-back RBI singles from Cole Hoskyns and Jonah Epps to go ahead 2-0. Ethan Lawson drove in the final run of the inning after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. "I just wanted to do whatever I needed to do to get on,” said Paslawski about his leadoff bunt. “I had faith in my teammates behind me.” The Eagles got a shutdown inning out of Cole Hoskyns on the mound in the top of the second allowing their offense to get back to work. Hoskyns' battery mate Ethan Lawson drove in his second consecutive run on his second straight bases loaded hit by pitch in the bottom half of the inning to increase the Eagles lead to 4-1. Blacksburg's Zac Painter worked a one out walk in the top of the third inning but was caught stealing on a great throw from Ethan Lawson. The throw proved to be a big play as it prevented a Wildcat run after Bryson Davis drove the next pitch to deep centerfield for a double. Hoskyns retired the next Wildcats batter to end the inning. Chesnee sent thirteen batters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning as they scored nine runs in the inning. The big blows came from two RBI singles off the bats of Jonah Epps and Michael Paslawski. Paslawski added another RBI in the inning while Luke Hollifield and Landon Thompson also had RBI singles in the inning. The Wildcats got a run back on a solo shot off the bat of Levi Barrett in the top of the fourth inning and they also got another big hit in the top of the fifth inning to extend the game as Will Johnson hit a two RBI single to make the score 13-4. Chesnee ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Camden Burns reached base on a one out single before scoring on a Luke Hollifield RBI double to the left field wall to plate the game ending run. The Eagles recorded thirteen hits, worked a pair of walks, and were hit by six pitches as they worked their way to thirteen runs. Jonah Epps and Michael Paslawski each drove in three runs to spark the Eagles offense. Cole Hoskyns allowed two runs in his four innings of work while only surrounding three hits as he picked up the win for the Eagles. Chesnee will travel to Blacksburg on Monday in the second game of the home and home region series. Comments are closed.
