The Chesnee softball team downed the defending AAA Upper State champions, Union County, in a road matchup by a score of 6-3 in eight innings in their second game of the Byrnes Preseason Tournament.
"I'm proud of our resilience after Union tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "They stayed focused on the next pitch and got the job done in the top of the eighth inning." Chesnee used a pitching gem from Sam Carver along with big hits from Ali Scruggs and Hannah Henderson to help secure the win on Monday night. Ali Scruggs got the scoring started in the top of the first with a solo home run to put the Eagles up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Hannah Henderson doubled the Chesnee lead with a RBI single to drive in Maddie Handy in the top of the 3rd inning. Union County got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a Kalli Petty RBI hit but Ali Scruggs once again came thru for the Eagles as she clubbed her second homer. a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 3-1 in favor of Chesnee. The Scruggs homer proved pivotal as the Yellow Jackets tied the game with a two run home run by Kalli Petty in the bottom of the seventh before Sam Carver slammed the door shut on a potential Yellow Jacket win as she struck out the next three batters to send the game into extra innings. Carver added to her excellent performance on Monday when she singled to start the Eagles rally in the top of the eighth inning.. Paige Scruggs followed Carver with a double before Maddie Handy plated both Scruggs and Carver with her own double. Hannah Henderson drove in Handy with another double for her second RBI of the game to cap the three run inning. Carver added to her strikeout counter in the bottom half of the inning as she struck out two more Union County batters in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win for the Eagles. Carver finished the night with 17 strikeouts out of a potential 24 putouts while scattering four hits over eight innings of work. She also had a big night at the plate as going four of five with a run scored. Ali Scruggs led the Eagles bats on Monday night with her two solo homers while Hannah Henderson also joined Scruggs with two RBIs. Paige Scruggs finished the game two of four at the plate with a double and a run scored while Maddie Handy went two of five with a double and two RBIs along with a run scored. The Eagles will play on Friday in the Byrnes Preseason Tournament Championship with the time, opponent, and location still yet to be determined. Comments are closed.
