Chesnee BaseballThe Chesnee baseball team enters the 2021 season joining a brand new region but the expectations for the Eagles are still the same to be in the playoffs when the end of the regular season arrives. After the loss of a season the Eagles will be young but hope that as the season goes along their talent will take over. "We hope to compete in our new region which will be a tough one with Landrum, St. Joseph's, and Blacksburg," said Chesnee head coach Scott Wease. "With not a lot of players with varsity experience on the team we hope to get better as the season progresses and secure one of the two playoff spots." With a young team the Eagles will be counting on their returners from last season to bring some experience like seniors Bryson Scruggs (C/1B), Cole Davis (P/OF), Cole Hoskyns (1B/P), Camden Burns (OF), and Michael Paslawski (OF) along with juniors Landon Thompson (SS), Jonah Epps (INF), Jacob Webb and Luke Hollifield (INF). They are going to use their experience with pitching and defense to carry them this season. "We're going to rely on our pitching and defense to hopefully give us a chance to win each night," said Wease. The veterans will be joined by sophomore newcomers Davis Rising, Ethan Lawson, Eli Henderson, Carson Williamson, and Jordan Fitch as they battle for the region crown this season. A new season also brings a new region for the Eagles this season as they will be competing in Region II-2A against Landrum, St. Joseph's, and Blacksburg along with Brashier Middle College and Greer Middle College. Chesnee will kick off their season in the Spartanburg County tournament at the legendary Duncan Park against Woodruff on March 5th before facing Union County and Spartanburg on March 6th. Chesnee SoftballThe Chesnee softball team is returning a lot of experience heading into the 2021 season and after almost a complete year of no games they are just looking forward to getting back on the field. ”We are very excited the opportunity to compete after almost a year,” said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. “We have a very hardworking group of young ladies who have laser-beam focus on improving each day and the season one pitch at a time. We’re fortunate to have a group that cares for and looks out for one another along with having a great depth of talent with all fourteen girls.” After finish second in their region at the 3A level in 2019 the Eagles are looking forward to an opportunity to see where they stand in their first season back the 2A level this year. Chesnee will return eight starters from last year including five All-Region players that include seniors Samantha Carver (P/INF), Paige Scruggs (P/INF), Ali Scruggs (P/INF/OF), Mattie Martin (C/INF) and Shenandoah Bishop (OF). The other four returning starters are junior Hannah Henderson (C/INF), junior Kyleigh Thompson (OF), sophomore Maddie Handy (OF/P) and freshman Skylar Barrett (INF). While the Eagles have eight returning starters from last year’s team they will also look to get key contributions from five newcomers that include sophomore Emily Pruitt (P/INF), senior Callie Burns (INF), senior Eva Vaca (INF), junior Emma Fogle (OF), and junior Nicole Helton (OF). Chesnee will kickoff their season March 5 in the Byrnes preseason tournament against Clover at 6:00 PM before kicking off region play Blacksburg on March 16. The Eagles first home contest will come on March 18 when they host Blacksburg at 7:00 PM. Chesnee Boys GolfChesnee boy’s golf team enter the 2021 season with a lot of youth which they hope can build as the season goes along to develop into a strong showing in the region and hopefully a postseason appearance. ”We’re going to be building with a young nucleus of players,” said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. “We should be competitive in Region II-2A and we hope to be playing our best as we approach the Region Tournament which will allow us to advance to postseason play.” The Eagles will return four players from last year’s team with freshman Peyton Lawter and sophomore Jackson Ramsey leading the way for the team. They also look to get key contributions from two newcomers, seventh-graders: Creighton Rentz and Hughston Johnson. On April 20th Chesnee will also hold their annual golf tournament at Meadowbrook which has been renamed the TC Ezell Invitational in honor of former Chesnee principal Tom Ezell. Chesnee will kickoff their season on March 8th when they travel to River Falls Plantation to compete in the Rebel Invitational. Chesnee Track and FieldThe Chesnee track and field team are looking forward to the 2021 season for multiple reasons and one of the key reasons is the loss of last year's season to the coronavirus. Another big reason the Eagles are looking forward to the 2021 season is they have a lot of experience returning with a combined 32 players returning athletes between the boys and girls track teams from last year. "We're just looking forward to having a season," said Chesnee head coach James Davis. "We're looking to finish at the top of our new region." The boys track team will return three All-Region players as Bryson Thompson, Ian Harris, and KJ Valentine lead a group of eighteen returners that also include Lorenzo Duren, Andrew Blanton, Emmanuel McKinney, Omarion Ocampo-Rios, Caleb Rentz, and Cory Seay. This group will be joined by a group of newcomers that include Malikhi Franklin, Matthew Froemel, and Terrell Kesler who will look to push the Eagles to a successful season this year. The girls track team will also be returning two All-Region players as Kymiah Blair and Jessa Beach will look to lead a group of fourteen returners that include Lanie Arrowood, Tracy Taylor, Claire Walker, Nykerria Proctor, Olyvia Stowell, Tanner Jones, Bethany Cheeks, Aleiyha Crittenden, and Shea Griffin. They will be joined by newcomers AmyRae Breitenbach, Akerah Morris, and Brie Smith this season. Chesnee will begin their season on March 9th in a meet against Blacksburg at Blacksburg High School.
