CHERAW, SC - After an impressive first day on the course saw the Eagles establish a strong lead, the Chesnee girls' golf team backed it up on the second day with an ever better score to repeat as the 2A girls golf state champions on Tuesday.
"I feel really good about the win," said Chesnee head coach Kyle Scruggs. "We have a group of sophomores and freshmen here that will hopefully keep working and we can get two more with this group." Chesnee won the 2A state championship after firing a score of 657 over the two-day tournament at the Cheraw State Park golf course. They won the championship with a sixty-nine shot lead over Oceanside Collegiate Academy, who finished in second place with a score of 726. The victory also comes full circle as it was Ocean Collegiate who denied the Eagles their first state championship three years ago. Even with his team claiming a state championship, Scruggs says he still saw areas he believes his team could have done better. "Yesterday I knew we didn't play our absolute best and today I know we put up a pretty good score, but I still feel like we left some shots on the course," said Scruggs. "We still had several three putts but at the end of the day the girls done what they had to do and got the job done." When the Eagles first hit the course on Monday, they fired a team score 333 to take a thirty-shot lead over Oceanside Collegiate Academy who shot a second a 363 in the opening round of competition. The Eagles were led on the first day of competition by Olivia Roberts who shot an individual score of 76 and was three shots off the lead along with Addy Parker who shot a score of 78 on Monday. The second day of competition saw the Eagles cut nine shots off their first day score as they fired a team score of 324 on Tuesday. On the final day of competition, the Eagles saw four of their five golfers all shoot lower scores including Olivia Roberts and Addy Parker who both shot scores of 74 on Tuesday. Olivia Roberts won the individual side of the tournament to become the individual state champion with a two-day score of 150 while Addy Parker joined Roberts on the All-State team with a two-day score of 152 and to finish in second place overall. Along with Roberts and Parker, Olivia Shields (173) and Abby Watson (182) also were named to the All-State team after all four finished in the top ten at the tournament. "It's pretty special all four of them got named to the All-State team," said Scruggs. "We're proud to have four of them able to accomplish that feat this year." With her individual state championship, it makes two straight years that the champion came from the same school and from the same house as her sister Sydney Roberts won the individual state championship last year. "Olivia and Sydney are a solid group and it's big to have them win the individual state championship in back-to-back years," said Scruggs. "Olivia done it in pretty impressive fashion as she got an up-and-down out of the bunker on the last hole to make a fifteen-foot putt to seal it. Had she missed that putt she could have allowed the other girl a chance to send it to a playoff, but she came up clutch with a big putt to win the individual title." Chesnee wasn't the only team in the area to have an impressive two-day performance at the 2A state championships as the Landrum girls' golf team also finished in fifth place for their highest finish ever at the state tournament. Cardinals' golfer Adeline Todd joined the Chesnee foursome on the All-State team. The Eagles finish their season with a victory for the second straight season and with no seniors will return all their starters from the state championship team for next year as they will look to make it three in a row next season. With the youth of the program, they have some lofty goals they could still reach ahead of them. "It's pretty awesome that they're this young with two state championships to their name," said Scruggs. "This group still has two more years to do some more special things before any of them graduate. They have the opportunity ahead of them to win four state titles in their high school careers which doesn't happen very often." Comments are closed.
