CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee baseball continued their big week with an 8-7 win in nine innings over the Woodruff Wolverines at home on Wednesday night.
"I'm proud of them as we are getting better every night," said Chesnee head baseball coach Scott Wease. "They are starting to believe in themselves and each other and winning is starting to mean something to them. I can't say enough about them tonight." The win was the second of the week as the contest was sandwiched between a pair of key region games, as the Eagles picked up a win in the first of those games on Tuesday evening with a win over Blacksburg. The run scoring got started in the top of the first inning as Carson Tucker drew a two out walk and later scored on Connor Kelly's RBI single. The Eagles clawed back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning as Dawson Pruitt and Tucker Johnson each drew a walk to set the Eagles up with two on and one out. Ethan Lawson drove in the first run of the inning with a RBI single. After an out and an Aiden Greene single loaded the based, Eli Henderson hit a two out two RBI single to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead after one inning of play. The Eagles tacked on another run in the second inning as Kyle Martin and Dawson Pruitt got back-to-back singles to start the inning. Martin later scored on Tucker Johnson's RBI single to make it 4-1. The Wolverines responded with three runs in the top of the third inning as they plated three runs to tie the game at four all. Connor Kelly drove in a run with a RBI single and Collin McAbee followed with a RBI double before Walt Caldwell scored thanks to an error. Chesnee retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kohen Orr hit a RBI double to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead. The Wolverines took the lead as Nemo Cochran and Walt Caldwell led off the fifth with a walk and a hit by pitch. After a double steal, Carson Tucker and Connor Kelly both drove in runs on groundouts to give the Wolverines a 6-5 lead. The Eagles tied the game with two outs in the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings thanks to Carson Gossett's RBI single. Collin McAbee led off the top of the eighth inning with a walk and after McAbee worked his way around to third base, he eventually scored on Whit Harrison's RBI single. Down a run and with two outs in the frame, the Eagles got a huge double from Kohen Orr before Tucker Johnson followed it up with a RBI single to tie the game forcing another inning of baseball. Orr came through once again in the top of the ninth inning as he struck out all three batters he faced to give the Eagles a chance to end the game in the bottom half of the inning. Aiden Greene was hit by a pitch and Carson Gossett drew a walk to set the Eagles up with two on and one out. Kyle Martin delivered his biggest hit on his third one of the night as he hit a walk off RBI single to win the game for the Eagles. "It felt great off the bat," said Martin. "I couldn't have done it without my teammates providing me with an opportunity though." Martin had three hits for the Eagles with an RBI and a run scored. Tucker Johnson and Aiden Greene each had a pair of hits with Johnson also collecting an RBI. Kohen Orr had a monster game for the Eagles as he hit two doubles with a RBI and a run scored. He also picked up the win on the mound thanks to two and a third innings of one run pitching that saw him record six strikeouts out of seven possible outs. "It felt great to pick up the win," said Orr. "I have to give it up for my teammates for always being there for me and having my back." Connor Kelly and Whit Harrison each collected two hits and a RBI for the Wolverines Chesnee will be back in action on Friday night as they host Landrum with a 7:30 PM scheduled first pitch.
