The Chesnee Lady Eagles got a big win over the defending 2A Upper State Champion Landrum Cardinals behind an explosive offense as the Eagles got production from the entire lineup.
"We have harped on just having good quality at-bats and hitting the ball hard," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "Our girls have worked their tails off after getting embarrassed last week. Instead of pouting our girls came to work and I think that made a difference tonight." Landrum got the game off to a fast start as Michelle Suddeth hit a leadoff homerun over the center field fence to give the Lady Cardinals a quick 1-0 lead. That wasn't the only great play from Suddeth in the first as she also made an amazing diving catch in the bottom half of the inning on a hard hit ball by Chesnee's Becca Watson. The Lady Eagles got their offense going in the bottom of the second inning as six consecutive Chesnee batters reached base with two outs. Paige Scruggs got the rally started with a sharp single that was followed by a Shenandoah Bishop double and a Sam Carver walk to load the bases. Hannah Henderson would drive in the first runs for Chesnee with a two RBI single before back to back doubles from Mattie Martin and Sierra Bowen scored three more runs. The Eagles' Sam Carver would lead off the bottom of the fourth with a single and after back to back walks Sierra Bowen singled to drive in two runs to give her four RBIs on the night. The Eagles added to their lead two batters later when Becca Watson hit a two RBI single of her own. Landrum got a run back in the top of the sixth inning with a RBI from Shana Davis. Carver ended the game for an Eagles victory with a three RBI double that scored Kyleigh Thompson, Paige Scruggs, and Shenandoah Bishop to give the Eagles a 12-2 lead after the sixth inning and the win. Chesnee got great production from the entire team as eight of the nine starters for the Eagles recorded a hit and either a RBI or run scored. Paige Scruggs had a nice night for the Lady Eagles as she limited Landrum to eight hits and one run after surrendering the leadoff homerun. "Paige is mentally tough and I was very proud of how she responded after the leadoff home run," said Coach Fogle. "Paige doesn't flinch and our girls just hunker down and fight to see what they can do." The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday at RS Central and will start region play on Friday at home against Broome. Comments are closed.
