BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The Boiling Springs fan base has waited almost three years (since October of 2020) to see a victory at home and on Friday night they got to see Bulldogs snap the losing skid.
The victory was a little sweeter for them as they defeated their rival Chapman 29-7 to take bragging rights between the communities for the next 364 days. Bulldogs head coach Matt Reel said his team and himself felt good going into the game on Friday night which wasn't a normal thing he feels going into games. "I'm just proud of the guys," said Reel. "I told the guys that this is the first week that I've woke up feeling calm and at peace about a game. I felt good about how we were approaching the game and had kids texting me this morning talking about how excited they were to play tonight because of how prepared they were. Our kids have been through a lot the last 365 days and I'm happy to see them getting the rewards from their hard work. I also want to compliment my staff and talk about how great of a group they are working to getting our kids prepared each week." A week after seeing their quarterback throw for over 300 yards, it was the Bulldogs rushing attack that led the team in the victory over the Panthers. Reel said the performance on the ground all started with the five guys up front. "First thing is I want to say how well our offensive line played tonight," said Reel. "Coach McDowell has done a phenomenal job getting those guys ready to play and we told them you won't get a lot of publicity but you're the reason we're going to win or lose football games. Chhim and Ry'Shaun done a phenomenal job tonight just staying in what they were doing behind those guys." Boiling Springs got the ball in their first drive when the defense forced an interception by Bulldogs senior defensive back Amayjai Boyd who returned the ball to the Chapman thirty-seven yard line less than a minute into the game. The Bulldogs took advantage of the turnover when they found the endzone on a one-yard touchdown run up the middle by junior running back Ry'Shaun Morgan to take a 7-0 lead over the Panthers. It started a big night for Morgan who finished the game as the leading rusher going for 130 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns. Boiling Springs extended their lead to 14-0 two drives later when junior quarterback Lincoln Huskey found junior wide receiver Tristian Horsey Johnson in the back left corner of the endzone just a minute into the second quarter. Bulldogs' junior kicker Michael Dueck pushed their lead to 17-0 when he made a 27-yard field goal from the left hash mark with just over two minutes to go in the half, it was a lead that they took into halftime, as the Panthers attempted a last second Hail Mary to the endzone to end the half, but it was intercepted by Boiling Springs defensive back Jeremiah Favorite. Midway through the third quarter the Bulldogs added two more points to the scoreboard when a Panther's snap went out of the endzone for a safety. It was set up by a 65-yard punt by Bulldogs junior punter Kyle Patterson that was downed on the Chapman one-yard line. Boiling Springs kicker Michael Dueck connected for his second field goal of the night, this time a 29-yarder from the right hash mark, to extend the Bulldogs lead to 22-0 over the Panthers. Chapman was finally able to get the zero off the scoreboard with just over seven minutes to go in the game when quarterback Coleman Gray found wide receiver Shawn Cunningham to a five-yard bubble screen to the left for a touchdown to put the Bulldogs lead at 22-7. On the Bulldogs next drive Ry'Shaun Morgan had another big drive, from two different positions, behind the Boiling Springs offensive line to extend their lead to 29-7 over the Panthers. Morgan started the drive with a 34-yard run from the running back position, but five plays later had to step in at quarterback for a key third down and two yards to go when he took a quarterback keeper to the endzone for a 19-yard touchdown run up the middle. While Morgan went for 130 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns, fellow junior running back Javen Chhim also had a strong night going for 64 yards on 11 carries. Boiling Springs quarterback Lincoln Huskey went 10 of 17 for 113 yards for a touchdown while his leading wide receiver was Kyle Patterson who had three catches for 30 yards.
